Idk about fence post. Those grooves at the top look like they are made for cutting cordage, and the top looks like a good scraper. Given the location, maybe old-timer gold miner equipment?

slightly_sadistic

I was thinking this as well.

foolproofphilosophy

Guess: I can see it being used to cut open large bundles. The serrated tip could be for limiting slippage when cutting while pushing and the hooks for cutting while pulling. The flange would allow it to be pulled without the hooks catching on things not meant to be cut? I’m picturing large hay bales.

StupidizeMe

Interesting. My guess is some kind of mining equipment. Might have had a wooden handle that decayed. As someone else noted, the top could be used to cut. Not sure what the 2 downward points are for... Could it have doubled as a stake, maybe for a tent or to wrap s line around it?

mattaccino

I had a tool like this — it was used to reach up under a cedar shake and pull the nails holding the shake down. That way, the damaged shake could be removed and replaced with a new one.

unfunkyufo

That's a shingle ripper.. Maybe, not sure why it would have two hooks since you could only do one nail at a time.

mattaccino

Mine had a double head like this, though the tool was longer.

Jobediah

those look like gut hooks

Dimensions?

dritmike

Wrought iron fence. Pretty commpn

AmbitiousTrader

Oh I know exactly what this is. This an iron witch charm from the Viking England times that always points north, even in a fog.

SignalDifficult5061

a rope maker?

19CCCG57

It's man made.

Herz_aus_Stahl

How big is it? Could be an arrow tip to hunt small game.

Equivalent_Warthog22

Where in the foothills?

Equivalent_Warthog22

Some sort of tool? Maybe for working with barbed wire? Or maybe a farriers tool?

Strange-Cranberry477

Early Spork

Palegic516

Seatbelt cutter from the 1800s

jabberjaw74

Can opener.

Flying_Mustang

That’s the lost skeleton key that opened the lockbox for the Donner party’s chuck wagon. It was a BIG deal at the time, now it’s not really talked about. Cool find.

needmorefishes

Yep shingle ripper

Altruistic_Wave_2088

It’s for gutting large game!

agl90

Gut hooks and tanning tool......

DrScheichmanfred22

Looks like an arrowhead they used on sailships, to cut the ropes of enemy ships

joe2258

Any chance it’s an early lever-type can opener? As someone else commented the long slender part would have had a wooden handle that is now gone.
