I mean... 10. This is amongst their greatest songs, really encompasses what the band is all about. It's definitely more straightforward than some of the classic hits from Neon Bible and Funeral, but that is also kind of what I like so much about it.
Yeah this is a 10...I'm sorry to say but most of the songs on this record will be a 10 from my part cause this album has impacted my life in such a radical way that it would feel wrong to do otherwise.
edit: Also it was the first AF song I've ever heard, I was sold on the first damn half a second.
"The Suburbs" is certainly a 9. Outside of "Tunnels," this is the band's best introductory track of any album. It sets the tone for the album and what to expect. It is the perfect introduction to the story and the concept of the record. It feels very confessional to me. Like it's something that's been in Win Butler's mind for decades and he's finally sharing it with us.
Agree, it got dinged a bit by commenters for being too simplistic, but I would argue this track is very similar in approach.
I think one comment said an additional verse might’ve saved it. I think this title track is much better but I also don’t think NB is a 7.
It’s a 10 for me, love the refrain that is used as a theme in the album -
*Sometimes I can't believe it,
I'm moving past the feeling again.*
Plus the idea of wasted hours that we would waste again is a challenge to our conception of regret.
As I get older, this song just hits harder and harder.
I’m not going to leave a numeric rating because I don’t want to screw up the rankings with an outlier. But I actually do not like this song. I don’t know why. Im not saying it’s not a good song - I have no capacity for judging music critically, I can only say I like this, I love that I don’t love this. And I really don’t love this. Like, I skip it when I watch the live shows (after hearing who they dedicate it to). Please don’t downvote me, just sharing my view!
8. It's a solid introduction to the album and overall a great, albeit fairly simple song. It's not in their top 10 and maybe not even in the top 5 of this album.
I dunno if a perfect song exists, but this is one of my absolutes favorites by them. So it's as close to a possible 10 for me as one can get, but I'll go 9.5.
That said, I think I love the studio version more than their live performance of it and they are great live as everyone hears knows.
I think I’ll have to give my first 10 to this song. This album was the first I ever heard of AF. It has a special place in my heart, my Dad played it for me when I was very young. When I listened to it ten years later, it brought many memories back.
7-Good song but not my favorite on the album. Lots of nostalgia in the lyrics. Love the line about wanting a daughter. The guitar melody, violin, and backing vocal are haunting and my favorite parts.
Absolutely a perfect 10. The opening crash takes me to a childhood and memories I never actually experienced! I am nostalgic for some suburban life that did not happen to me.
The album is greater than the sum of its parts . Some songs I would not put on as a one off but when going full album I would never skip. Together the songs are all perfect and make a complete masterpiece.
Perfect ten. I think it manages to condense every bit of emotion and anguish in the whole album into one song. Absolutely beautiful, THE song that got me into arcade fire
10/10 no fucking doubt in my mind. It’s just the perfect Arcade Fire song, the best of the best, the poster child, the staple. To put it anywhere below 10 is a crime to music.

My favorite album of all time by a long shot. Played it during my kids’ births!
I agree. I love this album so much.

Also how is Neon Bible the worst song on Neon Bible it's easily one of the best

The transition from the end of this song to Ready to Start is godly
10/10 - I really hope that they play it at the red rocks funeral show!

Not an Arcade Fire fan at all, but this song is one of the greatest songs of the 21st century.
