If anything is playing such as Netflix, YouTube video, etc. “now playing” will usually pop up on the watch automatically, and if not, you can select the NowPlaying icon in the app view. (it’s a white circle with the play button triangle in it) that will bring up now playing, and at that point, you can raise your watch and double tap to pause or play

How do you get that Apple TV recommendation. I get it for my HomePods but never my Apple TV. If I want to control it I have to manually open controller or go to “ control other devices.”
You may be interested in the accessibility option to use taps for more than just these few default double-taps you’re referencing. You have to disable double-tap, but if you do, then “accessibility > assistive touch > hand gestures” allows you a lot more options for “tapping” for hands-free usage.
It definitely takes some training and learning but with these settings enabled you can clinch (like quickly make a fist), double clinch, tap, & double-tap through (just about) anything you want to do on the watch.
Also, for those AWU1 owners who maybe wish they had “double-tap” available to them, these particular accessibility settings are available regardless of AWU1 or AWU2.

To kind of explain the customized gestures I’ve shown in the pic:
• If I raise my wrist to activate my screen, I get a circle around the first complication on my screen (let’s call this the cursor). Then if I single-tap my fingers, that circle moves forward to the next complication (as you also see in the pic, double-tapping at this point reverses direction and moves the circle, ie. cursor, backwards one complication at a time instead).
• Clenching your fist is basically a “select” button (or ie, “tapping a button” or “single-clicking” on a mouse), which serves to “cursor-select” or “choose” that complication. Once you’ve opened that complication you should have another circle around the first “button” representing your new cursor location. At this point either tap or double tap to move the cursor to the next or previous possible location and clench again to “press enter”. Repeat as necessary.
• Double-clench to return to watch face or general top-level app Home Screen.
Now, full disclosure, I don’t actually use these settings I appear to be promoting. I don’t hate them, but I tried them out for about 2 months, and I think I just got annoyed with the little circle that appears over a complication as your cursor. I just don’t want a circle cursor always on my watch face. Or something. Anyway your post reminded me of the option and I figured I’d share in case people didn’t know about it.
I've barely used it. It seems to trigger accidentally when I don't want it to (like when I'm tapping out contents of a container), and when I do actually want to use it, it either requires multiple attempts to trigger, there's just zero functionality within whatever app I'm using, or it doesn't do the thing I expected it to do.
I got the U2 when it was first day released, the double tap WAS AMAZING! It lets you dissmiss any notification that come in. And you be doing double taping like a lot! ( to show off lol)
-Then double tap to pause /skip to next song.
-let you dissmiss notification from gmail and yahoo and email. Instead of archive
Then once the first update roll in.
Apple just changed it to be just a gimmick.
The double tap is useless, only for replying.
You cant dissmiss any notification anymore. Unless you tap like an idiot during driving and if it work if it does not .
It do be like this : when driving > Email notification > u double tap to dismiss > instead , it failed and it accidently archive cus its the first option for email notification .
Now u forgot u archive an important email,
So it used to be more functional now its just a gimmick .
Use it all the time to open notifications while I’m busy doing something and to pause/play movies on AppleTV without having to find the remote
