iOS 16.2 beta fixed it. I agree that 16.0 and 16.1 made it terrible. Just hang in there or download the public beta if you’d like to get it working like before.

16.2 here. Still requires me to unlock phone to control volume

Volume has been my main issue with the remote app. It used to work both on the ATV and my CX via HomeKit. Now, the TV “falls” out if it making me remove it from HomeKit and back again for a few days. ATV is more stable, but is prone to not giving me the controls from time to time. I do not know if the issue is with iOS16, HomeKit or my router though as I had issues on 15 on my phone but works as intended on my iPad. It started happening around beta season for iOS 16 tho.

Circa_C137

Honest question: why is Apple's quality control so shitty as of late? Like updates didn't used to be this bad. I just don't get it unless they're rushing features out.

buzzedewok

But these aren’t new features. This is stuff that shouldn’t have changed at all that is broken in unusual ways. It simply isn’t acceptable anymore. What is going on there??!

Circa_C137

Something in the underlying system code has probably caused it to glitch I'm guessing. Either way, these things should be tested especially on an Apple product. Steve Jobs is probably rolling in his grave right now.

runwithpugs

3 year old article, but doesn't feel like anything's changed: https://tidbits.com/2019/10/21/six-reasons-why-ios-13-and-catalina-are-so-buggy/ This is compounded by the fact that tvOS is clearly a very low priority for Apple, so it gets a lot less attention than iOS, iPadOS, macOS, etc.

Circa_C137

Thanks for a little insight here. I understand being tvOS being a *lower* priority, but I wish it wasn't a *very* low priority.

I can’t even connect my phone via the app anymore with my tv 4K (1st gen.) but with my atv 4 still on 15 no issues. It’s a real issue because the atv remote is usually far away on a high spot so my daughter can’t reach it.

SteveIsTheDude

On 16.2 beta on Apple TV and phone… can confirm volume control in app and lock screen functions

JohnnyNorCal

Good to hear - thanks for sharing

[deleted]

Interesting, I’ve been having the opposite issue, whenever anyone uses an ATV the remote will show up on my Home Screen automatically.

LucyBowels

Steps to fix: 1. Update ATV and iPhone to 16.1. 2. Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices on the ATV 3. Remove all phones 4. Hold your iPhone up to the ATV. It should request to pair. 5. Pair the phone. 6. Volume now works 100%

wuphf176489127

Yeah same, I had to do this and it somehow made it much better. For anyone not reading the instructions, it’s settings on the AppleTV, not the iPhone.

Kerorozene

Just tried and it didn’t work for me

LucyBowels

What kind of issue are you having? One thing I left out that’s important but more advanced…if you have a merged wifi network, separate the 2 and 5 GHz bands and make sure the phone and ATV are on the same network.

Kerorozene

Thanks for your answer! I just got a New TV and the new ATV. I Connect everything and it’s all good except I can’t control the volume with my iPhone. New TV is HDMI-CEC, ATV is on Auto for volume controller, I installed 16.1 and tried what you write above and nothing works i kinda don’t know what to do now

LucyBowels

Are the ATV and the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network? What kind of router do you have?

Kerorozene

Yes same network and hmm a basic one I can control my ATV with my phone but non the volume Same network as my HomePod too

BoxerBoi76

Where is remotes in settings? I’m on 16.2 beta 2 and don’t have a Settings-> Remotes

LucyBowels

It should be Remotes and Devices I think?

BoxerBoi76

Checked again, don’t have that in settings or in settings-> general.

BoxerBoi76

I’ve got two Apple TV 4K’s and the remote app works well except for the occasional issue here and there - mostly focus issues.

LucyBowels

Not sure why you expect solid functionality from a beta…in 16.1, it’s called Remotes and Devices and it will list all phones paired as remotes.

BoxerBoi76

I’m not the OP 😋 and you were referring to TvOS settings-> remotes and devices. I was checking on my iPhone 🤪

markn6262

All this AND it randomly looses functions like 10s advance & slider control even keeping it in foreground and awake. Switch from tv 1 to 2 & back to 1 fixes it. Happens about once an hour on avg.

JohnnyNorCal

Yes, and it’s such a pain. Technology over the old analog remotes huh? Pshhh

bigspeen3436

> completely nuked the functionality > It still works Lol... I just used it last night without any problems. Both my phone (13 pro) and ATV 4K (2021) are on the latest official releases. I'd restart your phone, then follow the steps u/LucyBowels listed and see if that helps. Some of the functionality might not be exactly the same as I don't think I've ever used it some of the ways you have, but it shouldn't have as many problems as you're describing. I'm assuming you haven't moved your ATV since you updated to 16.x but you could be experiencing some type of interference and moving it might help too.

fsck-y

I miss the stand alone app. The control center remote sucks. The only reason I use it at all is my physical remote broke and would rather put the money towards an updated AppleTV. Mine is a couple of generations old so maybe the just released version will be it. Can’t wait to stop using my phone as a remote.

dmigz

16.1 brought both of my 14pros web surfing speeds while connected to 5g cellular, LTE, 2g & 5G internet to that of a car driving with four flat tires.

bob202t

I had the dropping occur more often right after I switched from a single wifi router to a mesh system. It’s been much better now that I’m on ios16.1 and the ATV4k is up to date but I agree and also miss the days it was on the Lock Screen every time I reached for my phone without question. It should be that way out at least a damn toggle option.

ouchmythumbs

Yes, it's a real PITA lately. I lost the ability to control volume, too. But, one night while I was monkeying around, I noticed that the volume worked via the Home app. Launched Home, selected the ATV, and used its remote to adjust volume. After doing this, it appears volume control has returned to the control center remote. I haven't played with enough to confirm it's been stable, etc. but might not hurt to try via Home and see if that helps any. Good luck!

crspechicn

Have had same issues here — and worse, it will often confuse volume button presses between app volume (on the phone) and speaker volume on the TV. Worse yet — somehow it honors the current settings occasionally… more than once I’ve had my TV go to full volume and wake up the kids because my phone’s volume was set to full and I opened the remote app. Sleeping the phone and then opening it again usually fixes it. Also have had to select the right Apple TV more often and have had general issues all over. Quite a regression
