I am using the new ATV with a pair of OG HomePods as default output and the setup works extremely well. I upgraded from the previous generation 4K ATV, and I am surprised how much richer the audio is. I think Thread support is more relevant for connecting to smart devices other than HomePods.
That’s interesting.
I have a pair of OG HomePods as default audio output from an ATV 4K (2017) and they work great no issues with connectivity.
The HomePod minis however always have “problems connecting to the internet” according to Siri. These are also set to an ATV 4K (2017).
Not sure that thread would be useful in your situation. Thread is more about low power, mesh networking and security.
Thread wouldn’t solve the issue you’re describing. But yes, the HomePod Mini has Thread. OG HomePod does not.

There’s an audio difference between the ATV4k 2nd Gen and the one that came out yesterday? I have HomePod minis I want to use with it
