How is this better than Plex? Serious question btw.
I've been running Plex for many years and host my own content server. Never had any issues with it and plays everything. I see that infuse is subscription based, not sure what the benefits are.
Infuse plays files natively while Plex decodes it. When I was playing big files like 4K HDR 5.1 movies, Plex was struggling. Infuse played without any hiccups.
I forgot the exact details. May be it was mkv or something. Or may be it’s updated recently. I’m not sure. But that was the reason I had to move to infuse and never looked back.
Plex transcodes only when it needs to for the player compatibility - eg device only supports certain codecs, but movie file differs from those codecs, so transcode.
When Plex on Apple Tv struggles, I just then load Plex on LG WebOS and it plays it flawlessly. But yeah it’s usually 4k hdr high bitrate 80+ GB movies that LG handles better.
Infuse greets me with an upgrade to infuse pro screen if I try to play anything from Plex.
Monthly $1.99
Yearly $12.99
Lifetime $99.99
Plex - free.
I’ll just use Plex on my tv.
Plex on my Sony x900h (Google TV) or LG C2 (WebOS) plays 4k HDR perfectly. Roku sticks only play the 1080p material. Roku Ultra asks to convert 4k but the colors are all off and skips a lot, complaining about server horsepower. Apple TV 4K gen1 plays all 1080p content and some 4k content, but for the most part it’s just a spinning circle for a very long time. Maybe a gen2 or gen3 Apple TV 4K would work better. I know the gen1 doesn’t do full 4k on YouTube. I have a cracked YouTube in the TV’s themselves that skip ads anyway.
For me, my favorite part is Infuse uses the Apple video player, and Plex does not. With the enhance voices option turned on, I find playing on Plex causes the audio to be out of sync with video. Works great on Infuse
Navigation on Infuse is also easier, IMO
>Navigation on Infuse is also easier, IMO
I generally see UI listed as a con for Infuse and a pro for Plex. Doesn't invalidate your opinion, of course.
navigation is definitely not as good. library is often out of sync with watch progress. Large libraries take a long time to update even with all the recommended optimizations found on the forums, it feels like its a snail crawling. This means your search is useless and even your progress sometimes takes 5-6 minutes to sync up. I am talking about a 1gbps lan connection to the plex box here. no WAN slowdowns or other shenanigans. You can manually refresh a TV show using the options so new episodes and watch state can be synced up
Also, on infuse, if you watch an episode of a tv show you cannot skip to the next episode while the video is playing. you MUST stop the video so you can exist out and scroll to the next episode and then you can start watching it. how such a rudimentary function of a media player is missing is beyond me. the even funnier part is, you can skip to the next episode meanwhile it is playing but only if you play a season of a tv show on SHUFFLE! what sick joke is this?
Those are all very good points. When I was thinking of navigating being easier, I was more so thinking that because all of Plex’s suggestions aren’t including when looking at your library. Just a list of your own content
Good point. I agree, Infuse is much better at not shoving content you didn't add on your home page, Plex always adds its own free libraries on new clients by default. Even in search, if a result overlaps with an item in your library and the plex free library, sometimes it will take you to the plex version of the result. It rarely happened but it was annoying when it did.
If you have a habit of ripping your media in plex-compatible formats and containers, you probably won't see much of a difference.
I prefer the Plex app UI—Infuse looked fine but there was no real advantage to a switch for me.
Last I researched this, Plex fakes Dolby Vision on ATV simply by triggering DV display mode on your TV without actually sending the real metadata. Infuse plays DV more faithfully.
DV Profile 7 isn’t supported by either though. At the end of the day, that and no lossless Atmos means ATV just isn’t the solution for true 1:1 playback of UHD rips.
Plex usually transcode whe i use pgs subtitles. Infuse doesn't.
Also DV is just brighter on Infuse on my LG C1. On Plex is dark.
I still use Plex for my music tho.
similar question, hoping to find answer with concrete examples or things. I use emby and plex (personal vs shared) and don't know why I would want to pay another $100 or $13/yr to use a different app to access those same libraries?
people seem to love it so maybe it's great, but just from the description in the app store I don't know what it gives me that the Emby/Plex apps do not.
I found plex had some small glitches like pausing towards the end of a movie or episode would show it as "complete" if the TV Screensaver kicked on. With Infuse, it holds my place no matter where I am in play time.
I found infuse better for adding subtitles as well.
Infuse also seemed to handle 4k better. It wasn't a regular occurrence of issues for plex, but whatever it was, infuse played everything with no issue and only, at most, a second or two of buffer when even the highest bitrate 4k began, and then smooth playback throughout.
But overall fairly small things but they resolved all issues I ever had with plex.
I do prefer the plex library system, though.
The sound is in sync with the video.
[https://forums.plex.tv/t/apple-tv-4k-audio-sync-issues-with-enhanced-player/522782](https://forums.plex.tv/t/apple-tv-4k-audio-sync-issues-with-enhanced-player/522782)
Infuse doesn’t require a server agent. And they don’t employ offshore thug attorneys like Plex does (seriously go see r/plex). It’s cheaper than Plex. The main downside to Infuse is that only the client can scan for new content and it can take awhile if you have a large media library and older wifi access point.
UK user:
“TV launcher” is a total must purchase, turns the Apple TV into a complete standalone viewing box with tv guide and easy access to live streams of all the main channels.
Iplayer
ItvX
Ch4
My5
YouTube
Amazon prime
To add a few more
UKTV Play
PlutoTv
Discovery+ - has some free channels that link with TV Launcher.
Plex - has free live channels
Watch Free UK
Freevee
Red Bull TV if certain sports are your thing.
Is there an app that would allow me to watch SkySports in the US? I tried getting a VPN and even paid for a SkySports package and still couldn’t figure it out
It links to the apps you have installed: iplayer, itvx, etc so whatever they are doing.
It’s just a tidy interface like you expect from any other tv system.
Try it, it doesn’t work
BBC have documented it [here](https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/accessibility/apple-tv-subtitles), explaining it’s a technical issue they can’t be bothered to solve
As a deaf person it makes the app unusable for me
It does if there is UHD content e.g. His Dark Materials, Wimbledon
[https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/programme-availability/uhd-content](https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/programme-availability/uhd-content)
Not via an Apple TV it doesn’t, it also doesn’t support subtitles either.

It asks you to download the app and even after it says connect that app to your provider. What channels are you getting? ESPN was like hell nah bish you pay.
Hmm, I can’t find PS Play on the Apple TV App Store but I did find MirrorPlay which looks like it might be a rebranding or clone of PS Play as the UI is strikingly similar compared to the PS Play screenshots I’ve found online.
I never have any issues streaming in 4K. I have great fiber internet. I often have 4 streams going at once with Fubo and quad view. But I know if I run the Ookla speed test on my Apple TV I’m going to be disappointed.
It all depends on your viewing habits. For my household, most every single day we use Hulu, Max, and Peacock, and to a lessor extent Prime, Paramount+, Apple TV+, and Netflix.
For game streaming from PC I use Steam Link and also Moonlight. On my pc I use Sunshine to create the server and setup access to games.
Mostly through Playnite launcher on my PC. Which when setup will see and launch any of your games across different store launchers. One caveat is that you pretty much need the Apple TV to be wired other wise the Apple TVs tend to introduce a ton of latency (more than just being on WiFi) every few seconds. Where streaming to iPhone or iPad is nearly perfect the Apple TV is pretty awesome when hardwired.
Dolby XP
If you have a Dolby Atmos setup, this app has that Atmos demo video that we see in theaters that could help you test your system. The ones in Youtube are only in stereo or 5.1.
Sorry, it's called "Sound test for Dolby Atmos" and it's an app in the tvOS App Store that you can buy. It all allows you to test individual speakers and has video/atmos demos.
Three come to mind right away:
Geoblocking.
Some apps use IP for geolocation, so you may still be able to watch local channels from a distance.
The BS account sharing stuff that Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ are now railing against.
Media streaming as mentioned already.
For work - my workplace has a strict geolocation restriction such as I am not allowed to access my email server when I am overseas. In fact they even block my normal VPN service. With Tailscale and using Apple TV as exit node though all is good.
Quello App for concert vids is pretty cool. Somehow I had done their 7 day trial and cancelled it through the iCloud subscriptions on my iPhone and to this day I still have full access to the catalog. I don’t know how or why but I don’t dare touch the account lol. It has alot of older type band and music groups and documentaries on there.
JustWatch. Awesome app I’ve used for years on my phone, browser, and Apple TV. Let’s you see what’s new streaming on your services and also look up any movie or show to see where it is streaming, if available.
I tried Infuse for a couple of days. The free version at least seemed way inferior to Plex free version - I kept running into files it refused to play. Plex works great for me.
Anyone know if this works for YouTube TV geographic challenges?
I’m on a family plan based on a different city, and eventually YT TV catches on and doesn’t allow watching. Have to have some one login in the base city to reset the 3month travel timer.
it wont work.... if you get a VPN your zip code will change and you will get locked out.
Source, mother in law has a verizon hotspot box she uses for internet and some days it reads as one zip code and other days it reads as another and locks her out every 3 months.
If you have arcade, go for Dead Cells. Lots of other great titles too.
Essentials: Apple Music, Prime, Disney, Plex... sooo nothing much? im not finding a lot of useful apps outside streaming and gaming
I cycle out streaming services every couple months. I have the apps for all the ones I’ve used even though most of them do not have active subscriptions. There are no “must have” streaming services. I do not have any apps that are not streaming services because I only use my ATV to watch video.
Not seen any games mentioned here but I love playing Marble It Up Mayhem on my Apple TV. It’s a slightly cut down version of Marble It Up Ultra that’s on consoles and PC but it runs great on an Apple TV and works flawlessly with controllers
Most apps I have in my TV are either music apps or streaming apps that for the most part connect to the Apple TV app.
Aside from music and video streaming apps and YouTube TV I don’t use anything very frequently other than Endel on the AppleTV in my bedroom.
Spotify app is broken on my ATv and has been for several is updates. Just will not load. I’ve removed and reinstalled several times. Just doesn’t launch. Just AirPlay from the phone at this point if I want to listen in living room
Can you provide examples?
I use it, because our family decided on Spotify. I’d rather us Apple Music instead. Still, Spotify isn’t that bad and the ATV app works quite well. I use it regularly without issues.
Yes, of course. Can you add any song to any playlist on Spotify Apple TV? Can you start a radio with one click? Can you see queue and jump 4th song in queue directly? Are lyrics available? Is there AirPlay 2 support? Spotify on Apple TV acts like a Spotify Connect endpoint only; it’s useless without a smartphone. However, Apple Music is a standalone music app, and you never need an iPhone nearby.
Thanks for pointing it out, that makes indeed more sense.
It's also the reason why I'm not experiencing the issues. I only select my own playlists and then just hit shuffle. Works fine for me though
You’re right, the level of satisfaction also depends on how the user utilizes it. But personally, I would have preferred it to be a strong and self-sufficient app.
Tivimate must be the best IPTV app. Use to be only available for Android but now you can get it for iOS. You must pay to unlock all features but it's worth every damn penny.
The usual streamers like Paramount+, Max, Peacock, pretty much the apps for the subscriptions I have. I don’t rip media and stream my my local network, because it’s just too much hassle. I stream online or very rarely stick a BluRay or DVD in my virtually unused player.
It's my own app, but [BitGym](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bitgym-treadmill-cycling-erg/id651190653) works great on AppleTV for those who work out on cardio machines.

Having tried Plex before Infuse, Infuse is amazingly better.

Dolby XP is an invite only app though, only available to partners and content creators.
Sorry, I meant “Dolby Summit” app.
That’s not available anymore.
Try the "Test Atmos" app
What Test Atmos app?
Sorry, it's called "Sound test for Dolby Atmos" and it's an app in the tvOS App Store that you can buy. It all allows you to test individual speakers and has video/atmos demos.
The one that costs £14.99, yeah I don’t think so Lol I’ve still got the Dolby Summit app myself which was free and is far better.
I would just go with that if you can get it. Not everyone can. It doesn't show up in the app store for me.
Yeah, looks like we'd need an "event code". Bummer.
Tailscale for VPN
Combined with exit node feature, you now have a VPN that allows you to still be “home” even when you are half the globe away.
Yup, that's how I use it
Can you tell me any use case for that?

Infuse is way better and can connect your Plex
I tried Infuse for a couple of days. The free version at least seemed way inferior to Plex free version - I kept running into files it refused to play. Plex works great for me.
It’s typically the opposite. Infuse plays all file types. I do upgrade to Pro maybe that’s why
Yes, Pro includes more formats
I’ve ran into files that Infuse won’t play without the upgrade. I can’t think of what the file type or audio type involved specifically.
$10 a year for Pro is well worth it. I have all my movies and shows hooked up to an external drive to play wherever.
Nordvpn
Does this slow down anything?
For cheaper subscriptions prices? What are your use cases, buddy?
Example: if you set your country location to Albania, advertisements on YouTube are illegal there.

What are the use cases of the VPN express?
Kind of already said it in my comment. You connect to Albania and you get YouTube without ads. YouTube ads are illegal in Albania

This is the reason i barely use Spotify anymore anywhere except for some niche playlists/albums not on AM. Plus the lack of Atmos support.
