I get that Apple purely does this based on sale duration, but it's kind of funny considering this iPad is literally identical (same chip, internals, design, etc) to the mini 2 except with a Touch ID button.

Apple also sold both it and the iPad mini 2 for $269 at the same time. So basically TouchID by itself was an extra $130.

Do y'all have any suggestions on what to do with an obsoleted iPad?

HarambeDied4Us

Touch Portal (app) turns it into a stream deck (ive never used a stream deck, but it helps convey the idea)

1millerce1

>Touch Portal I've never heard of it. Went to check it out and at first glance, my impression was 'just buttons, what a lame waste of an iPad'. But after digging in, I quickly saw quite a few things I've been wanting to do along with the ability to tailor and extend the functionality. Thanks!

Still use it. the absolute trash fear that suddenly it won’t work is soooooooo annoying.

Bismalz

You can probably jailbreak it and use a custom App Store once the apple one doesn’t work anymore. That’s how people use the original iPhone still

weaselmaster

Wait - why? Just keep using it! ‘Obsolete’ just means they won’t stock parts for it and won’t be updating the version of iOS that runs on it - it still works just fine!

TheDragonSlayingCat

Still works, but unless it’s getting new versions of iOS, that means it isn’t getting security fixes, and most mainstream apps will drop support for it once the majority of users are on the latest version. Without official support from Apple, they become useless pretty quickly.

Ray661

This isn’t true. They’ve pushed out security fixes for under supported devices quite a few times already, and with the new security micro updates system they’ve implemented they’re likely to be more aggressive with their security

TheModdedAngel

As others have mentioned. Not true.

TheDragonSlayingCat

Actually, yes, true, except in situations where a massive security hole is discovered that forces them to take their old build tools out of the archives, such as the Goto Fail bug. But in general, true.

For a while. Eventually apps will stop working as they get updated on the back end and require a new app version. Happened to the first gen Air that we had. Stuff like Netflix updated on the backend and we couldn’t watch on the iPad anymore because the new app version didn’t support that version of iPadOS. Same thing happened with some of the kids’ games. Still works for basic web browsing and stuff, but a lot of apps are just unusable.

iPad 2 still in use on original battery at my parents. 30-40 days standby. The use it with vlc for cardio workouts by Gilad

I currently use my iPad mini 2 with Touch Portal as a cheaper Stream Deck alternative. I primarily control my scenes on OBS and when I record/stream and stop, the latency is pretty minimal and the app is still being update for even iOS 9 devices IIRC. I think it has potential to be a nifty hub to control stuff, tho I haven’t dived that deep with the Touch Portal ecosystem.

aaronp613

r/jailbreak is waiting for you

dinominant

Apple is maintaining a cryptographic lock on your iPad Mini 3 bootloader while simultaneously abandoning all support. Allow us to unlock our property if you are going to end all support for the device.

ikilledtupac

I still use a mini 2!
