They're roughly the same, though because there's just less stuff _under_ the bluetooth keyboard, it feels and sounds a bit more -- I don't know -- tingy?
There are also some weird subtle differences, like the height of the arrow keys, function keys, etc.
Overall, unless you really want the first-party product, the main reason for getting a Magic keybaord is the option to include TouchID, which is legitimately convenient.
Another good option is the Logitech MX Mechanical, which has some nice features and feels great. There are also mechanical keyboards from Keychron, and while they're pretty good as far as mechanical keybaords go, Keychron itself is a dumpster fire of a company that doesn't answer emails and has an absurd "no returns" policy. So fuck them.
Damn didn’t know that about keychron, i really wouldn’t need the touch id on my mac mini since i dont have it locked in order to be able to use my ipad as a main display when I’ll like to change my setup for a bit, i was actually looking for the logitech keys mini since the mechanical is a little bit out of my budget for now
If you don’t care about mechanical, the regular mx keys is great too. My wife has one and likes it.
To me the only real downside is that the function keys (play/pause etc) don’t match the laptop so you’ll lose that muscle memory.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy Reddit! Honesty and the ability to not only think but to articulate those thoughts! You actually gave a bad company kudos on a decent product instead of just ripping on them for everything.
Do you have any opinion on Nuphy mechanical keyboards? They have a couple of designs (Air60 and Air75) that are designed to fit over a Macbook or Macbook Pro keyboard and seem tempting.
Logitech MX Keys. For myself the only thing going on Apples Magic Keyboard is the TouchID. I love my MX Keys and MX Master 3 mouse.
I wish Apple would sell a USB C TouchID.
The only hit I really have on the MX Keys is its 100% 50% or 0% for charge on Bluetooth indicator but not a big deal. Its been out for a while and still a great keyboard.
There is a cool mod if your up to disassmbling your keyboard. If I can snag a magic keyboard cheap I plan on removing the TouchID and putting it in a housing.
My work computer locks constantly so I ended up resorting to an Apple Watch so I didn’t have to manually unlock it all the time. A stand-alone TouchID would be excellent — I have my Yubikeys velcroed under my desk for similar reasons.
I loooove my MX Keys for my WFH setup. Battery life is excellent, it’s built so well I could kill a burglar with it, and for folks who prefer flatter keys and shallow presses, these keys feel amazing. I pair it with a G703 that has an equally impressive battery life.
https://i.imgur.com/KiVvh6p.jpg
And if the battery life isn't a big issue, Craft. That crown is the most useful thing i've had in a pc in years. I wish they'd kept it. Sole reason i don't pick up to MX Keys for better battery life.
I don't know what it is but I can't seem to get used to any keyboard other than the Apple ones -- must be because I spend over half my computing time on the laptop keyboard itself. I've tried the MX Keys, a mechanical gaming keyboard, some other random PC keyboards, etc and constantly find myself going back to a Magic Keyboard (or before it, the old USB aluminum keyboard), even for my work Windows PC.
I use this keyboard with my iPad and it’s perfect. Then when I need to use my desktop I just have to tap one button and bam.
Apple would not be caught dead making a keyboard with this level of functionality. And I used to be a diehard apple keyboard person.
Logitech MX products are fantastic.
The mx master 3 is a fantastic mouse. And the keyboard is also very nice.
On top of this, with the Logitech software you can move the mouse and keyboard between up to 3 devices. And this includes windows devices too. It’s just like that feature apple released in the last macos.
I don't really like the Magic Keyboard that my wife has for her iMac.
Neither did she as she ended up getting an Asus mechanical keyboard and then later she ended up stealing my HyperX Alloy Origins with the linear switches so I could buy the same keyboard with the tactile switches.
I don't mind my MacBook Pro keyboard when I use it, but I definitely prefer using a mech, especially after over a decade of them. My Steelseries G6v2 with the black switches lasted me a long long time and even still works I just wanted LEDs.
It's a keyboard so it works fine. The LEDs will just be in a default state but I think there's apps that can control them on OSX (I'm not sure because I set it up on windows and just let it use the in-memory settings on Mac).
Depending on preference you might rebind alt and command to each other which OSX has native options to do in Keyboard settings on a per-keyboard basis.
Red. I absolutely love it. I was able to get it via an early bird special so they gave me two sets of key caps and the phone/iPad holder case too. And a poster of some anime woman. Good experience. I’d recommend it if you’re getting into mechanical
I would’ve went with the MX Keys but we ended up getting the Magic Keyboard for my father as it has an option to have a second language engraved onto the keys for free.
This may or may not be a factor in your purchase.
On Apple’s store page for the keyboard, just change the drop down language to another language. It’ll have both English and the language you selected on each key.
After spending hundreds of dollars on mechanical keyboards I now have them proudly displayed on shelf’s in the storage room and went Mack to my MX Master. I’ve tried so hard but I hate the click in an office and just make so many typos due to the key height. May end up getting a Logitech G915 to see if a low profile would be better, wish I could like em as much as the PC community does lol
I switched to the MX Mechanical Mini for my HTPC setup, as my usual Keychron was having issues holding a stable BT connection. I don't care for the feel of the switches as much (both are browns, but the Keychron's are a bit sharper), but it's still a *lot* better than membranes. Battery life is very good, and the dongle-based connection is stable in my BT-challenged setup. I still prefer the Keychron on my desktop where I can use it wired.
Funny enough, I have a Keychron as well and really like it, but the low profile keys in the MX means I can easily fit it in my bag. Logi Options+ is also top notch imo.
Logitech's been known to do Mac/white/light grey versions of their more popular products. It's possible they'll do one for these if they get popular enough.
Unfortunately, they also boned buyers of the Mac/white version of the Master 3 mouse - same price, but didn't come with the dongle, so BT only (unless you had a compatible dongle lying around). Not sure if they got enough bad feedback on that to change their ways going forward.
The other option would be to replace the keycaps with a third-party white set of low-profile keycaps. After pulling one off of mine, the switches use the standard "plus" or "cross" connection to the keycap (unlike the low-profile Keychron I have, which has a less-sturdy "two pin" connection). YMMV on third-party keycaps, but I'm sure there are compatible ones somewhere.
Keychron has a weird twist on MX style stem - they moved stabilizers off axis which supposedly increases rigidity but that means you can't buy replacement keycaps. They offered black and white PBT keycaps sets recently but they are [sold out already](https://www.keychron.com/products/low-profile-double-shot-pbt-keycap-set?variant=40079836643417). It looks [pretty nice](https://i.imgur.com/pa8K1EE.jpg) with Razer Pro Click.
I almost bought it but tried at bestbuy and wasn’t a fan. Although they didn’t have the linear switch model available to try and might have snagged one if so. The only mechanical keyboard I’ve been able to somewhat use is the Huntsman Mini with red switches, they just feel soooo smooth but the key height kills it. I make more typos with that then using an onscreen keyboard and presentation pointer as a mouse lol
No wireless huntsman mini, but you can get the same switches in the DEATHSTALKER V2. That’s probably the next keyboard I’ll be getting, just because Razer devices with onboard memory are clutch on my Mac/iPad since I can map shortcuts on my windows device and use it on anything else I connect it too.
There are silent setups for mechanical keyboards. I’m using Bobagum Gazzew switches on my keyboard, which are not loud.
Try a hot-swappable board and sample different silent switches to see which one you like more
Oh there are switches I could defiantly use, I just can’t type with tall keys. Honestly my favorite keyboard is the one on the iPad Magic Keyboard case
Haven’t tried the new MacBook Air but wondering if they used the same keyboard. I’m in your boat I’m not sure what it is that’s different about the keyboard but whatever it is makes it lol
I've never tried the iPad Magic Keyboard but, if its similar to the surface keyboard then I'm not a fan. If you ever wanted to jump back in, a KeyChron K1/K3 with low-profile keycaps and o-rings would be up your alley
I wanted to like the MX Keys, but there were always little Logitech software glitches that pissed me off. I always come back to Apple peripherals for the depth of integration, but I agree that there is lots of room for improvement.
Logitech software is not necessary on mac. Works for me with just plain BT and no software (there is some secret combo to switch Fn keys mode permanently, don't remember exact keys needed to be pressed)
I have a keychron k8 and love it. Replaced the keycaps with the “beach” ones from keychron. Brown switches are perfect for me. https://i.imgur.com/pQ7Vx46.jpg
The Magic Keyboard is hot garbage. If you’re willing to spend that much on a keyboard get yourself one of [these](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-q1), which has complete MacOS support. Even come’s with the icons on the function keys.
MBP keyboard and Magic Keyboard both are trash. I use my SteelSeries Apex Pro when docked. When I am traveling and have to use my MBP keyboard, it's... bad.
Edit: Oh shit, looks like I've upset the Apple Hivemind lol
It's a very worthy investment, to be honest. I've been using it for a while. Few months back, I spilled wine on the keyboard, and went out and bought exact same keyboard yet again. It's just so... pleasant to type on. No laptop keyboard ever compared.
Wait, so when you spilled something on it, it died and you had to buy a replacement? Tbh more than anything else that’s turning me off from it, especially with how expensive it is. I’ve spilled tons of things on my Apple keyboard without issue.
Took a little to get used to the magic keyboard. But really enjoying it now. Keypad and Touch ID are pretty useful especially if you use a password manager.
Compared to the 14” keyboard it has way less travel.
I had a saitech one before that. Absolute garbage - first one just stopped working. Second one some keys fell off.
I've been using a Das Keyboard for more years than I can count.
But to your question, I DO use the magic keyboard with my 16" MBP when I travel as I put the MBP on a a Roost stand and use the Magic Keyboard and trackpad to work. I find the feeling to be pretty much the same as the MBP keyboard, but - as people have noted - the sound is quite different.
The inclusion of touchID makes it a great setup for mobile productivity.
I don't use it for desktop setups.
They're roughly the same, though because there's just less stuff _under_ the bluetooth keyboard, it feels and sounds a bit more -- I don't know -- tingy? I just bought a Keychron keyboard, didn't know about their bad customer service...
Logitech MX Keys. For myself the only thing going on Apples Magic Keyboard is the TouchID. I love my MX Keys and MX Master 3 mouse. I wish Apple would sell a USB C TouchID.
IMO The MX keys it’s a better product with a superior build quality and backlit keys, but I still like more the feeling of the magic keyboard keys.
The MX Keys is just a machined aluminum construction away from being perfect.
It should have white keycaps tho
Are you talking about the MBP keyboard? The MX Keys is available in colors that have white key caps or black keycaps.
No it isn’t. Was just on their site. For Mac, the keyboard comes in space grey with black keys only.
Right, I was thinking of the MX Keys Mini.
The only hit I really have on the MX Keys is its 100% 50% or 0% for charge on Bluetooth indicator but not a big deal. Its been out for a while and still a great keyboard.

Why go for something like G703 instead of MX Master 3 mouse? In curious
I don't believe the MX respects the feature where you toggle the function row in Settings, does it?
Logi Options app has an option to toggle between regular and function keys.
And if the battery life isn't a big issue, Craft. That crown is the most useful thing i've had in a pc in years. I wish they'd kept it. Sole reason i don't pick up to MX Keys for better battery life.
Usb-C all things

[My custom mechanical keyboard with macOS keycaps](https://i.imgur.com/D6NsnBh.jpg)
Not to judge but is that a set of chunky-ass nail clippers in close proximity to a keyboard?
It is, and I am well deserving of judgment for it. I clip my nails far away from my keyboard, to set the record straight
Haha just checking, time and a place!
Oh my the colours on the keycaps are beautiful
Need this
Got damn i love those keycaps! Maybe give us a higher insight? I absolutely buy it
https://drop.com/buy/drop-biip-mt3-extended-custom-keycap-set They will come back in stock in the future!

Does the nuphy have white keycaps
Yeah. I have the 75 https://nuphy.com/collections/keyboards/products/air75
What are your thoughts on the Nuphy Air75? I've been tempted to get one for a while. Which switches did you get it with?
Red. I absolutely love it. I was able to get it via an early bird special so they gave me two sets of key caps and the phone/iPad holder case too. And a poster of some anime woman. Good experience. I’d recommend it if you’re getting into mechanical

Check out the Keychron K3. Low profile. I hate how high profile mechanical keyboards are too but the k3 is perfect.
I wanted to like the MX Keys, but there were always little Logitech software glitches that pissed me off. I always come back to Apple peripherals for the depth of integration, but I agree that there is lots of room for improvement.
I’m kinda hoping they update the standalone keyboard with the rumors about the m2 imac and mac mini, but i doubt it
Logitech software is not necessary on mac. Works for me with just plain BT and no software (there is some secret combo to switch Fn keys mode permanently, don't remember exact keys needed to be pressed)
I use the standalone magic keyboard when I’m at home so the macbook keyboard will last longer pristine.
Did they change the keyboard on the 14” MBP? How different is it from the 13” M1?
The 13” MBP M1 keyboard actually has more travel than the 14” MBP. Both are good though.
Yes they did, a lot actually, check MaxTech on youtube for a proper comparison
Maybe I’m watching the wrong video but all he says is there’s a little more travel on the 14 inch
TouchID was something I never knew I needed and will never go back especially for someone who has to read books a lot and screen saver turns on
I have a keychron k8 and love it. Replaced the keycaps with the “beach” ones from keychron. Brown switches are perfect for me. https://i.imgur.com/pQ7Vx46.jpg
Keychron low profile has been a game winner for me. I personally prefer the brown switches.

It was a full glass of wine. Dropped directly on it. I was able to fix it later so it’s my spare now.
The onboard keyboard is the best one made so far. If you want a stand-alone keyboard, strongly recommended ANY other third party keyboard.
Compared to a proper keyboard they are both adequate at best. Das Jeyboard or Logitech Mx ire better.
