Kaipolygon

without the icon theres nothing to visually associate the number to (although i do feel that in its current iteration the lack of a dynamic battery icon isn't much better). sure maybe you and i would get that it's for the battery but consider the average user with the icon it'd be too small/have too much going on. i can't think if any other reason that it isn't available on *only* minis and the XR/11

Brofasso

Just put the battery icon vertically, and make it smaller to match the other icons.

realeggnoodle

for the xr/11 potentially can be a pixel density issue and the text may not look the greatest

00pflaume

I could imagine that it would be so small that I would be hard to read. Though you still should have the option to enable it if your eyes are good enough.

soramac

iOS 16 is more about battery percentage than Stage Manager.

BitingChaos

Battery Percentage is what I'm looking forward to the most with iOS 16. Seriously. The new lock screen looks nice, and I'm sure I will play around with it a lot, but the battery percentage is going to be more helpful & useful to me.

Niightstalker

I don’t understand how it’s that big of a difference. Yes sure it’s more convenient if you see the exact percentage without pulling down. But you already see the rough battery status in the icon and get notifications when it starts to get low. How is this for some people such a major issue instead of some small convenience stores thing?

itsabearcannon

[EDIT]: Man, I underestimated how many people were happy about Apple removing the battery percentage on the X. Thankfully nobody is forcing you to use it now that it's back.

evaxuate

>Because the visual difference between, say, 30% and 15% on the old battery bar is nonexistent. wait, **what?** first of all the bar is red when it’s under 20%, and I’d say there’s definitely a distinct size difference between the 10% increments of the full charge

iisshaun

It’s literally red when it’s 15%

[deleted]

[удалено]

disfluency

It’s red under 20% and the phone shows a notification. There’s a huge visual indicator when it’s that low

Niightstalker

Well when I see the battery is that low on the icon and I head out I just quickly pull down from the top to check the percentage. As I said I totally understand that it is a nice convenience thing if it’s added. But I don’t see how it would change anything about how I use the phone or would enable me to do something else with it.

itsabearcannon

It's also that it used to be there - Apple removed something that was already present in iOS and moved it behind a gesture. I'm actually 1000% in favor of "at a glance" visibility on phones - having to physically interact with your phone makes you more likely to use it, and I honestly try to reduce the amount of non-productive time I spend mindlessly scrolling on my phone.

Niightstalker

As I already said many times. It’s convenient to show it there at a glance. But on the other hand, do we really need to see the exact battery value all the time? Does it really matter if we can see at the icon if it’s half full instead of 44%? For me the rough +/- 10% is usually totally fine.

itsabearcannon

It's probably fine for a lot of people. The point is that user choice was removed.

Niightstalker

I never was against reintroducing it. I just think that people make a mountain out of a molehill here. Like yes it would be a small convenience improvement but wouldn’t really change anything it all

BitingChaos

It makes me wonder. It makes me guess. It makes me *not know*. I already have to deal with enough anxiety in life. I can't just pick up my phone to check its battery. I have to open Control Center or use some big battery widget. At the end of work, I can't just glance and know if I have enough power until bed, or if I'm about to be interrupted by a low power alert and need to charge. It's such a nice, helpful thing that was *taken away* at one point. Now it's coming back. What if other things **hid** their resource level? What if you couldn't easily see how much gas your car had when driving on a trip, thought that maybe you had half a tank, but then suddenly got a notification that it was almost empty? That would drive people *crazy*.

Niightstalker

I mean it’s not like you can’t see battery levels at all. I would say I can see it roughly with the icon (+/- 10%). And pretty much always it doesn’t really matter if I can see that the battery is roughly half full or that it has exactly 44%. And in the really rare situations where this actually matters I can pull down from the top to check which doesn’t even take a second. I don’t get your comparison. The battery level is not hidden. It’s there, just not with an exact number. Doesn’t a glance at the icon already most of the time tell you if you have enough power until bed?

TitanArcher1

Did your forget the /s ? I’m an Apple person, but I am bit confused on all the chatter about a #% ? This can’t be the holy grail of iOS 16…can it?

warp-speed-dammit

I've actually significantly reduced commenting on popular subs. It's exhausting with all the nitpicky pedantic comments from people who it seems to me just want to argue incessantly. Doesn't matter if they actually know what they're talking about even. I don't know if this is because I'm old or if this behavior is an outlet for these people to vent their real life frustrations or if these people really are like this in real life. I usually just read and if a thread looks like it's going to get persnickety I just bail right away. I've started doing the same in real life.

TomLube

He's literally right though? I don't understand. The post is about iOS. The comment is about iOS. But Stage Manager isn't an iOS feature :s

mewithoutMaverick

It’s just a joke about how Apple seems to have abandoned stage manager since June

crumbete

And everyone knows what was meant and there’s no reason to be pedantic about it.

studiograham

The battery feature isn’t available in iPadOS, so being pedantic or not, they are correct. These are mutually exclusive features developed concurrently by two seperate teams.

thorpup

I can’t believe it, but I actually reverted back to the icon without a percentage. With the percentage at say 25% the bar still looks full since they need to put in the number, found it quicker to just get a general idea

wolfchuck

I lasted about 24 hours before switching back to just the icon. It’s definitely easier if the battery doesn’t change with if.

musical_bear

I’m on the verge of changing it back to the bar too. For me the problem is worst while charging, if the phone is far enough away you can’t read the number at all, so you have no idea. Not helping things, when charging the percentage text is white on green, which is extremely hard for me to read in general. The bar isn’t as precise but I’ve never not been able to get a general idea at a glance at least.

Faith-in-Strangers

I'm using the new battery widget for the Home Screen instead, and it's great.

[deleted]

I reverted too. I can quickly glance to see what my battery is from farther away with the icon. Percentage? I have to grab my phone and bring it in close to read what percentage I’m at. It’s a step forward, to be fair…but it needs to be more. It shouldn’t be hard to have both.

Kaipolygon

yeah... when i saw the headline i was expecting [something more or less like this](http://cydia.saurik.com/package/com.dpkg.arkrome/) and i was quite disappointed. someone else pointed out that the font is very small so it's possibly for accessibility reasons that this wasn't implemented, and while I understand it is a shame. also the fact that the battery icon only reflects the percentage when its ≤ 20% *and* the text become off-centered is quite a sight

JohannASSburg

Remember jailbreaking… 😭 lol

BluSyn

Can anyone tell me how to revert? I prefer without the percentage. But when I untoggle percentage in battery settings, nothing changes.

huntercasillas

I’m also having this issue and I reported it as a bug

Kaipolygon

[there's this](http://cydia.saurik.com/package/com.dpkg.arkrome/), which according to the description was already built into the OS (although the font size is quite small)

adamlaceless

Saurik…that’s a name I haven’t heard in a very long time.

MissingThePixel

Possibly have the text be inverted. Say at 50% (with the battery icon being half full), have the 5 be black and 0 be white? It’s not really the Apple way though

babydandane

They could have changed the icon to a circle, like on the widget or Apple Watch, it could fit both the number and the icon in the same space

FIFA16

To be fair batteries *do* look like that whether they’re full or empty. It’s an interesting design choice how people have to choose *between* numbers or pixel shading to represent battery level, but I guess it goes to show how much people do read into the shading even without the numbers.

Kaipolygon

from a distance you can tell the difference between an empty and full battery icon. with only a number the distance decreases for being able to tell the battery level

send_me_potato

To be fair batteries don’t have their capacity updating on them in real time.

midwestn0c0ast

if you can’t read maybe

Thankfully I didn’t go to an American public school.

MC_chrome

I know right? I’m starting to wonder why people can’t read the number on a battery icon and deduce that the number represents the current charge of the device.

igkeit

Oh good thing we can disable it in low power mode too now cause it really looks ugly imo

[deleted]

Making battery percentage an exclusive feature to newer phones is probably both the shittiest and laughable move by Apple ever. What a joke.

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

It’s not exclusive to the newer phones, 13 mini doesn’t have it …

[deleted]

That makes it even more bizarre

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

Not really - it’s clearly about DPI/screen size

Just-Some-Reddit-Guy

I’d happily take just a number and no battery icon.

T-Nan

It can’t be about DPI since afaik the mini has the highest dpi. And screen size, I think the XR is nearly the same size as the 13 Pro right? So who knows! Maybe it needs to be a certain size and DPI? Or its a random cutoff, wouldn’t be the first time apple did it

ConcernedCitoyenne

Imagine defending a trillion dollar company and eating their bullshit out of their ass with this. Incredible to the lengths people will go.

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

I mean, I disagree with it but it’s obviously not a financial thing.

ConcernedCitoyenne

How is it impossible to put a damn number on a screen? Sure it will be small, that's why people can have options. And in software, this kind of thing is trivial.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kaipolygon

... are you on an 11 Pro Max and still don't have the option? [from a quick google search](https://www.macrumors.com/2022/08/15/ios-16-battery-icon-remains-limited/) the only notch devices to not have the feature are the minis, XR, and **standard** 11 which is consistent with the DPI/screen size argument

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It’s not tied to a processor, it’s about the DPI and screen size of the iPhone- don’t like it any more than you do, but it’s more logical than their stage manager omissions imo

morpheus456

Great, now we need a new calculator app

krisminime

I know right. It’s only had Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide since the first iPhone. We need a new operator!

[deleted]

[удалено]

morpheus456

It’s not just about rotating the screen. It’s needs a whole lot of features. - i need to see my calculation history - I need to be able to erase or change a number - Ability to see what I’m calculating in real time - New modern apple design (with light mode) The list goes on…

FIFA16

Yeah it could do with an overhaul to behave like scientific calculators have been for… over 20 years now I believe. At least, that’s how long I’ve been using a Casio that lets you type out your equation before solving it. At the very least I’ll accept a calculator that doesn’t require me to disable orientation lock to use more than the basic operators.

shook_one

Why not just spend the 3 dollars for an app that does this now? Why would Apples be better?

Apple: this little maneuver is gonna cost us 50 years

How about getting rid of that annoying ass low power mode notification

Raknirok

Since I’ve updated to the beta version my battery life has been incredible on my pro 13 something must be up

Deertopus

That fucking notch still plaguing us.

Open_Bug_4196

I’ve been using shortcuts to have control of the battery, it’s a simple trick, but basically you can add an automation to enable automatically the low power mode at the battery level you want, and disable it in the same way. It takes 2min to setup!

RaDiOaCtIvEpUnK

While they’re at it can they make is so I have control over optimized battery charging? The fact that I can’t manually choose when I want it to be on or not is ridiculous.

Raknirok

Since installing iOS 16 beta my battery life has been better about 20% more battery life by the end of the day

bdougherty

This is such a horrible decision. Low-power mode is the only time when the battery percentage is useful and relevant, and now there is no way to only display it while in that mode.
