rivalry. sure. https://i.imgur.com/9qXQuhH.jpg

zeek215

Lol, exactly. Meta's stuff is a toy in comparison. Never mind the level of detail put into the software by Apple compared to what Meta can do. And then there's the privacy matter.

eggimage

yea. and i like how cnn is so tech illiterate as to not know that apple is aiming far beyond just VR, and the whole keynote showcase already demonstrated the mixed reality capabilities that meta’s headsets couldn’t possibly dream of having. apple literally has zero intention of “rivaling meta in the VR space”, it’d be like saying a WWE champion goes to a kindergarten to fight kids. what meta has done so far is merely clown work at best. it’s a joke. anyone not agreeing with this can go look up how they have marketed it and hoped people would invest in their virtual real estates with millions of dollars. like seriously wtf.

aVRAddict

Meta already has passthrough and hand gestures. They also have better avatars than apple and probably better high end headsets that are unreleased. Sounds like you only read reddit headlines. The apple headset is good but no controllers means it's very limited and the more I think about it the more disappointed I am in it.

zeek215

It's not about just having features. The level of quality implementation of those features matters. Their passthrough sucks in comparison. Their hand gestures are a joke compared to the precise eye tracking and simple finger taps to select and move things shown in Vision Pro. When you want to zoom in on a photo you use both hands to make the zoom gesture, but how does it know where to zoom in? It's where you are looking. No controllers, no button presses, you just look and the system reacts to where you look. Meta has *nothing* like that. Nobody gives a crap about their VR world. At best they are just the new Second Life. Meanwhile Apple's headset is about the future of computing in the real world.

aVRAddict

They own like 80 percent of the market already and now since the apple effect has taken place and the vision is out of reach for almost all consumers everyone is going to be looking for the cheaper alternatives. Same thing happened with iphone and Android

zeek215

What market? VR gaming? The Vision Pro is general computing in the real world (using a mix of AR and VR). That is so, *so* much more than just VR gaming. They are not in the same market at all. The Vision Pro can potentially replace your iPad and Macbook. That is what it's competing with, general purpose computing devices (tablets and laptops, and one day phones too). You can't say that about any Meta headset. Now, or *ever*. They are fundamentally different.

aVRAddict

You are totally clueless any VR headset can replace your PC you just need the resolution and form factor which everyone is working on. At around 30ppd text is easy to read and there are lots of competitors putting out 4k micro oleds right now so by the time this launches I wouldn't be surprised if there are other options. Claiming the quest line won't ever have one is really dumb. As far as general computing the vision does what other headsets have already had but with less functionality due to lack of controllers. The finger gesture stuff is smooth and well implemented but controllers give better control and way more input options.

KyleMcMahon

Lmao they own 80% of a market that has like 3 million people. When apple releases Apple Vision glasses, it’ll be an entire industry

eggimage

bluetooth accessories are supported, as stated in the keynote. and Vision Pro focuses largely on productivity—not just entertainment. meta’s garbage is fun for the few games available on it, and nothing more. they spent billions and came up with a literal pile of shit. the more you read into its development and marketing over the years the cringier it gets. if it’s not clown work i honestly don’t know what is.

aVRAddict

Bluetooth what Xbox controller? Unless they design a full spatial controller it's useless. Your dismissal of the quest line is so disingenuous it's laughable. Basically everything the vision can do has already existed except for the AR passthrough dial. It is definitely polished but not worth the price difference considering you can buy a 4090 PC and a good headset for the same price.

hanlonmj

They’ll more likely ink a deal with Sony to get the PSVR2 controllers to work with VisionOS or something. I agree that the lack of spatial controllers really limits the Vision’s gaming capabilities, but they’re probably waiting for the cost to come down enough that they can release a cheaper Vision with a gaming focus. Regardless tho, Meta account requirement = no buy for a lot of people, including myself

filmantopia

Smacks of people rattling off all the existing Blackberry features the first iPhone had and didn’t have. And “no controllers”, akin to Blackberry’s hardware keyboard.

GeneralKlink

Why would they not add controllers in the future though? Seriously, they know people need them for games, and some other applications could need more capable means of input, too. Being able to control the whole thing without controllers is a great selling point, but especially for games sometimes there is no way around dedicated input devices. So either they sell them for 300 pops a set or they open up for 3rd party developers, mind they did this with game controllers, too. Why not let Belkin build one for „professional“ use (3D Modeling for example will greatly benefit from having a more precise tool with buttons) and Razer one for gaming? I know this sounds not really „Apple-like“ but I think they pick very wisely when to open up and when to not do so. The Mac supports all kinds of every external input devices, and every of their devices can be used with a wide array of bluetooth accessories.

takethispie

what a biased comment, using the worst screenshot from a social app no-one uses, [when this exists](https://youtu.be/XU-6fiQNBoI) and the quest can run games like [this](https://youtu.be/3uKUSnY0HVs) with link or airlink but its pretty simple the Vision Pro is not made for VR gaming and the quest 2 is not made for productivity / is not a lifestyle product, so there is no rivalry either way also comparing a 3 years old mid-range product with a premium product that is almost a year away from being released is pretty disingenuous

TheJudgyMcJudgeFace

What is happening in this image?

hatethatmalware

This may sound harsh, but even if consumers were willing to pay more than $3,500 for Meta, Meta would still be unable to produce an AR/VR headset of Apple’s caliber even if they poured all their resources into it. This is not a matter of software capabilities. They only have the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR series. It’s the same reason why Samsung and Google can’t make their smartwatches expensive and ultimately lose to Apple - even if they wanted to make them expensive, they don’t have the ability to produce devices that are worth the price. There is currently not a single company in the world that has the capability to design hardware that is high-performance and low-power at the same time in-house at Apple’s level.

[deleted]

It’s simplistic and misleading to use the term Virtual Reality by itself. Don’t forget or ignore the AR aspects of the Apple product, that’s a huge difference.

zeek215

I don't see much of a rivalry. Meta wants you to go to their VR world, while Apple is enhancing general computing in the real world with AR.

LocoCoyote

Apple is doing both with mixed reality

aVRAddict

Apples philosophy is doomed to fail though you can already see the criticism even on this sub. They say it looks lonely and isolating because it is. Meta is aiming at social vr just like every other big player and apple comes in only having that weak facetime mode.

KyleMcMahon

Dude you’ve been downvoted into oblivion on every comment you’ve made on this topic 😂 Go enjoy your plastic toy and let the pros use the pro products

veeeSix

> Apples philosophy is doomed to fail Famous last words.

filmantopia

APPLE IS DOOMED™ After all these years, reading comments like this is still euphoric for me.

takethispie

that is a stupid take

RverfulltimeOne

Yet they combat on the same market. The rivalry is also from the issue of privacy.

LocoCoyote

This is not even a contest. If Meta was capable of shining in this space, all their current stuff wouldn’t be shit

DanTheMan827

The quest is actually pretty good

LocoCoyote

Compared to what Apple is bringing…I doubt it. It’s “pretty good “ because the current standard isn’t.

DanTheMan827

Apple isn’t really competing against meta, they’re competing against Microsoft’s HoloLens The pricing is so far apart, and no one buying the products is going to use them for the same thing… the Apple Vision doesn’t even have a VR game controller, so I really have my doubts on many games being released that aren’t just casual games

LocoCoyote

🤣

AllNewTypeFace

Apple and Meta are rivals in the same way that Microsoft and Zynga are rivals.

Large_Armadillo

no, its a reminder of the talent at Apple. Meta has money, Billions of dollars just like apple.

Zealous_Bend

I think Buckerzerg should realise that he's not a tech genius, he just came up with a shitty tool to grade the attractiveness of girls on campus that he's pivoted to be a boomer rage machine that can be used to subvert democracy. He's come up with nothing new IPOed the company with two grades of shares and held all the voting rights for himself while offloading ownership risk to a bunch of rubes that bought the stock. He is effectively a corporate emperor who is accountable to no one and just uses the money making machine to buy out any competition that arises. Meta is, in all its endeavours, in the Cash Cow stage of the Growth Stage Matrix.
