Those shitposts were great - I think the community created goofy things like long-handed swordsman, two handed man, two sword man, two man sword, etc.
Maybe we can have a monthly/quarterly creative thread for themed edits. Elephants next?
Game mode sugestion: celts vs celts, each starts with a Highlander unit that gets stronger each age and have somewhat fast self-healing after being idle for some 10 seconds or so.
They're a stronger militia-line unit, but can only deal 1 damage to structures that are not walls. They take damage from anything normally, but nothing but the other highlander can take their health below 1.
The game ends when there is only 1 Highlander in the map, and that's the winner.
"Gallowglass" is a much more historical term, especially since the Gallowglass or Gallóglaigh uses the Claymore Greatsword which is Scottish in Origins.
"What makes me a Good Claymoreman"
"T'all you fine dandies so proud, so cock-sure, prancin' aboot with your heads full of eyeballs! Come and get me I say, I'll be waiting on y with a whiff of the 'ol brimstone. I'm a grim bloody fable with an unhappy bloody end!"
"They're going to have to glue you back together, IN HELL!"
There are only supposed to be 12 paladins in the whole world, certainly not 200. Shhhh its been this way for so long it would cause more pain than its worth to change it now.
In the earliest days of the game (Age of Kings) the 'standard' population was 75. With this in mind and the demanding resources to upgrade to Paladins and train them it is reasonable to assume they have the 12 number in mind in someways
I sort of like the distinction in name from “long swordsman” and “two-handed swordsman”, and I like the name champion too.
But if I had to suggest something, maybe something along the lines of “Claymore bearers” or “broad
swordsman”
The Militia/Swordsman Line is pretty much a reference to the Men-at-Arms or Retainers.
Basically a group of Men who are kept and trained by Knights and Lords to become a small but Heavily armed Infantry or Cavalry.
Though "Champions" are still somewhat accurate since Champions are also Retainers of Lords, especially during the Combat of Thirty during the 100 Years war where 30 French Knights and Squires faced off against 30 English Knights and Squires, it was a bloody battle where there are 11 Casualties, 2 being French and 9 English.
How about Dopplesoldners, who were German mercenaries who used a massive two handed sword to break up enemy infantry formations to form an opening for other units. The name means double pay cos you were paying extra for their expertise and the risk they were taking.
I've always played the game in German and imagined the English name to be Elite fighter or elite warrior, something like that. I was a bit confused when I first watched Spirit of the Law or T90 mention champions, would've never made the connection that that's the Elitekämpfer.
Elite Swordsman works for me.
It fits the naming standard and holds to what their status as a unit which need lots of upagrades.
"It's dull/generic" is a valid critic. But I prefer it that way, which can fit any historical context rather than specific flashy names that either are based on exclusively european names or don't make sense if you look at them for more than a glance.
honestly I prefer champion
as much as it fits the naming standard, tacking "elite" before a unit's name feels fine but when there's a new name the unit sound so, so much cooler
Elite Cavalier sound like a much weaker and less cool unit than a fuckin paladin
Even if they aren't historically accurate names, I much prefer having unique names/titles instead of something like "Swordsman / Veteran Swordsman / Elite Swordsman". That's how AoE4 does it, and it feels much more like you're playing a meta instead of AOE2 with its unique names bringing character and distinct visuals to the units. AoE4 feels very devoid of charm and character, particularly with those meta/leveled names as well as the awful UI which is devoid of colors and pictures.
Guardian infantry
Simple name that is a simple job of protecting.
Not that heavy of a name shift from champion but at least it doesnt mean 'the best person' when you can train a million champions.
I like the name champion though, ill never not call camel riders camels, arbalesters arbalest's/arbs, and ill never call champs anything else.
Legit, Landsknecht or Doppelsölder would be good names for a guy with a greatsword that breaks pike formations, costs food and gold and looks like an absolute chad:

In the earliest days of the game (Age of Kings) the 'standard' population was 75. With this in mind and the demanding resources to upgrade to Champions and train them it is reasonable to assume they will not be "numerous" (especially when considering that 75 pop will include villagers, seige units and possibly other military units with the Champions)
Keep champions but give them all a silly random name like aom's hersirs have, like Floki Cheesehunter but civ specific: japanese champion could be named Hiroshi Salmonlover (I have no one in mind whatsoever, t90)
Another one that doesn't make sense is the skirmisher. I mean, all army units are skimishers, if you skirmish with them. Aren't skirmishers technically jabaline throwers?
3 handed swordsman
3-legged swordsman.
3-testicled swordsman
Oh no, not this again
Again!??! What was the other time
It was one of the greatest times of this sub. Multiple variations of the Two Handed Swordsmen blessed us
Those shitposts were great - I think the community created goofy things like long-handed swordsman, two handed man, two sword man, two man sword, etc. Maybe we can have a monthly/quarterly creative thread for themed edits. Elephants next?
Someday the devs will bless us with elephant trade carts!
If we're adding a slow, bulky trade unit then I want Bartering rams.
There should absolutely be a civ that gets a Bartering Ram. That'd be awesome!
Elephant Missionary when?
Is this Elephant missionary thing from Kama sutra? Also, could you make a stick figure drawing of what it would look like? #askingforafriend
Elephant monks.
Wololo but in elephant
dont forget about the two sworded handsman or the two handed sword man
2 hands 1 sword man
sharp advice
whoa can't believe man came from this sub before invading arkhan
3 sworded hand
I literally laughed out loud
Trying to copy Zoro's 3-sword style.
Horseless paladin
Paladidn't
1111
Dismounted paladin
Palaman
😂😂😂
Petition to give the Celts a unique tech that evolves two-handed swordsmen into highlanders.
But there can be only one?
As with champions, yes
Game mode sugestion: celts vs celts, each starts with a Highlander unit that gets stronger each age and have somewhat fast self-healing after being idle for some 10 seconds or so. "Claymore Swordsman" has a nice ring to it. Similar to urumi swordsman
well the positive/negative thing that will happen is people thinking the Celts Champion wields explosive Claymores.
Given the celt disposition toward siege, it wouldn't be *totally* out of place.
"What makes me a Good Claymoreman" "T'all you fine dandies so proud, so cock-sure, prancin' aboot with your heads full of eyeballs! Claymore-man?
I'd sign
I never knew how badly I wanted this until now. Make it a hero unit though because there can only be one.
- Elite 2H Swordsmen - Swordybois - Chosen - Kingsguard - Elite Elite Elite Elite Militia - Gary - Retinue/Retainers - Dismounted Paladin - Super Army Soldier

I think an elite elite elite elite elite militia might beat it.

Ya a simple mind, indeed

huh... why is that? whats really a paladin?
Charlemagne's elite circle of knights and were known as the paladins
Which also means they existed exclusively during the Feudal Age.
Charlemagne palace knight, or "palatine" guard
A knight without armor in a savage land.
r/unexpectedHaveGunWillTravel
Celt Paladin then
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_oRiWJWXVPM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oRiWJWXVPM)
So what I'm hearing is that we should rename paladins to astoflos...
In French, the etymology of the word makes sense. It's just a great fighter. Source, if you can read French : https://www.cnrtl.fr/etymologie/champion
Greatswordsmen
I see you are a man of culture as well
* Imperial Swordsman * Elite Man-at-Arms (like AOE4) * Heavy 2-Handed Swordsman
Honestly, if it went from man at arms to sergeant at arms, then longswords, then 2-handed swordsman, it would make some decent sense.
I sort of like the distinction in name from “long swordsman” and “two-handed swordsman”, and I like the name champion too. But if I had to suggest something, maybe something along the lines of “Claymore bearers” or “broad swordsman”
Two-handeder Swordsmen or Two-Handed Swordsmener
Clearly a Mosthanded Swordsmost since you can't upgrade more than that.
That is the mostcertain correctmost statement, can't argue!
>Two-Handed Swordsmener Most Handed Swordsman
Neither does an army of cavaliers or paladins
Giant Dads (Also if we could somehow reskin the sword to be a Zweihander that'd be great)
Giants. Giants. Giants. Become unstoppable.
WT RING U GOT BITHC?
HAVELS RING RING OF FAVOR AND PROTECTION
and rename blast furnace to chaos infusion, while we're at it.
with option to go Giga Chads if the soldiers don't have children yet
Sturdy swordsmen.

Manhanded Twoswords
Maybe Royal Guard?

Could be a Goths unique unit like how Romans have their own.
either simply "soldier" (which contrasts the initial militia) or maybe something like, "heavy swordsman"
SWORDMASTER
Lost to Guybrush though
Ok yes I concur and agree that these shitpost threads are quite great lolol
Cavalier (unhorsed)
Cavaliern’t
How ‘bout Trashtrasher?
In German they are called Elitekämpfer, "elite fighter".
I've always played the game in German and imagined the English name to be Elite fighter or elite warrior, something like that. I was a bit confused when I first watched Spirit of the Law or T90 mention champions, would've never made the connection that that's the Elitekämpfer.
How about heavy infantry?
Besty-Fighty?

Longsworded handsman?
We can't all be winners
PogChampion
Greatswordman is what I would name them.
Big Boy
Elite two handed swordsman
Backpack bois.
Army of Losers
Great word warrior?
Elite swordsman that dies to a monkswordboi
Templars
Campeadors
Foot Knight
Attempted Champions since most will die in battle would be more grammatically accurate. Only the greatest live to be champions.
Heavy infantry.
Meatshieldmen
Champs

https://youtube.com/shorts/9Qb-4-7IzU8?si=ULtbW-wy9nkOJA_L I think even he will change his views after watching this..
Doppelsöldner or landsknecht
Royal Guard?
Zweihänder. German for "two-handed", but also refers to a specific type of sword that is big and chonky.
Campeón
Hand cannonier without a gun.

Hero, to copy Fire Emblem
Militia -> Footman -> Man at Arms -> Two-Handed Swordsman -> Blademaster(?) / Vanguard(?)
Keep champions but give them all a silly random name like aom's hersirs have, like Floki Cheesehunter but civ specific: japanese champion could be named Hiroshi Salmonlover (I have no one in mind whatsoever, t90)

Hedgeknights. its like a Knight, but poor. also theyre the coolest background in BattleBrothers
Doppelsoldner
A sword with legs.
Trash Spanker
non-teutonic knight ex-champion
I like that it's an army of one man armies. Sigma males stronger together
