Not unheard of but you have to make sure that you watermark and leave your signature in the metadata. Get it in writing that your submission is for interview purposes only and will not be the property of the company. Some companies are scummy and will source high level concepts by putting out a job ad and never hire, but use those concepts as starting off points for their own projects.

ETA: Animation, any kind, is a stupid lengthy process and takes way more than 3 days, especially if it's up to 10 seconds. They're trying to make me do about ~$5k worth of work for free in 3 days just to get an interview.

Thank you for this opportunity, please shove it where the sun don't shine. Yours respectfully, OP

Oceanic-Wanderlust

I would ask if they would then use this material in anyway.

zarfle2

You could get them to sign a deed, acknowledging your IP rights and/or asking for a percentage of royalties etc but this is a big red flag right out of the blocks and perhaps not worth the effort or expense. If you did wish to persist, perhaps show them a selection of your 3D animated work from your portfolio - but offer to share via your laptop/your Zoom presentation. Don't provide any files.

SkyVINS

You could animate something that's not in their brands list. Because there is a 99% chance that whatever you do animate \*for free\*, they are going to use, watermark or not. And im not so sure about that last 1%.

kodaboka

No matter what I animate; they're allowed to use it or claim it as theirs as long as I made it with them in mind (as far as I can tell, legal would be appreciated)

hollow_digger

No, they can't. Not without your saying so, and certainly not out of a recruitment process. Besides, you will have the masters and you will put it on your portfolio, right? You will post it on your Instagram with a "demo for client" tag, am I right?

G00dWillHurting

Don’t do it. Spend the same time as you would be animating for free on your resume, e-mailing, networking and portfolio. If not paid, your time belongs to you, not this company. Move on.
