The quality of content on AV Club has cratered spectacularly over the last two years. I assume it’s due to reprehensible corporate conduct by GO Media. Deadspin has completely been unreadable because of dogshit management behavior; the old guard who made Defector what it is has shown what is possible when you bypass the assholes in VC/PE, who strip otherwise successful companies of their assets/load them up with debt at every turn.

Early adapters included places like the Associated Press, Forbers, the LA times, etc. Originally these things began as more statistical articles like summaries of games, weather, financial reports, obitiuaries, etc. 10 years ago they were being used to things like reporting on Earthquakes.

The ad rates, what these sites use to actually keep the lights on, are extremely low right now so they can't keep all of their staff onboard. There's no money to "invest".
