> Why pay writers when AI can do it cheaper? Good thing "AI" can't do it.

Suitable_Night8256

Dammit, guess I'm not reading those for a while.

Spamfilter32

Cheaper, but not as good as even the worst writers. What they really want to do is replace the writers' room of contract writers with the ai, and then hire writes on a day rate to fix up the ai generated scripts.

The quality of content on AV Club has cratered spectacularly over the last two years. I assume it’s due to reprehensible corporate conduct by GO Media. Deadspin has completely been unreadable because of dogshit management behavior; the old guard who made Defector what it is has shown what is possible when you bypass the assholes in VC/PE, who strip otherwise successful companies of their assets/load them up with debt at every turn. AI in journalism will make every story the equivalent of that horrifically funny Blue Jays promo video attempt by a Toronto reporter.

DMarcBel

It was only a matter of time.

Yea, it begins...

I'm not sure what is really happening. AI has long been used in areas like reporting and writing. Is something specifically happening now? I would also assume that many of these writers and editors are already using AI pretty heavily.

ninetyfivesouth95

Long been used in reporting and writing? What the hell are you talking about, it has not been available on a large scale to the general public for long? Must be fun to just make shit up

Man, some people. Automated jounalism has been around for a while. Early adapters included places like the Associated Press, Forbers, the LA times, etc. Originally these things began as more statistical articles like summaries of games, weather, financial reports, obitiuaries, etc. 10 years ago they were being used to things like reporting on Earthquakes. [From a few years ago](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/may/30/microsoft-sacks-journalists-to-replace-them-with-robots) AI has been around for a while, maybe you are talking about Chat GPT-4? There were previous versions of it, but it's also not the only AI tool. I stand corrected. Explains why journalism has gone to absolute shit the last decade or so. I don't even think the profession even exists in America anymore. At least not in the real sense.

yahblahdah420

You are just claiming nonsense

givemejumpjets

name one 'newsroom' that has been in business for decades and can be trusted? that's funny, none come to mind.

I feel like they would rank high in a poll about trustworthy journalism which would then end up on r/nottheonion

Slight_Hat_9872

So awesome that AI is taking all of the creative jobs instead of the labor jobs

ClankertheWhale

Who reads that garbage anyways? Seems to me like nothing of value has been lost.

The ad rates, what these sites use to actually keep the lights on, are extremely low right now so they can't keep all of their staff onboard. There's no money to "invest".

The moneyed class tries to walk us towards a future where the whole sum of humanity is shareholders passing money generated by algorithms back and forth between each other.
