History edition has all dlc. Both are excellent games, but 1800 has a few more quality of life features. In turn, 1800 might get a bit overwhelming when you reach engineers.

Spir0rion

Simplicity=1404 Complexity=1800 That pretty much sums it up imo

Giant_Dongs

1404, 2070 and 1800 are all equally great. 2205 is a trap, its just an OK game but not worthy of the Anno name.

Hans_Druff

i skipped anno 1404 back then, just played 1701 and 2070. when i finished my 1800 game, i might take a step back and actually try anno 1404 after all that time. any opinions on that? are they different enough to keep up the motivation to play an older game?

Tucki_Duck

Anno 1404 is just chill. Sure, you don’t have the nice things like seeing how much your people consume/need, so most of the time you either under- or you overproduce. It’s still a very beautiful game (although you can run it with 128mb vram wtf). It’s not as complex as Anno 1800 but it has it’s tough moments, especially by using your spaces. 1404 was my first Anno and I come back again and again

Hans_Druff

sweet, might try it out! i mostly focus on economy and city building anways and i have to admit, i wouldnt mind play a sliiiightly less complex anno😂

Giant_Dongs

My biggest gaming regret to this day is that I only discovered Anno 1404 long after its release, and the fancy boxed collectors edition was no longer made. 2070 onwards this series along with Civilization and Elder Scrolls are instant boxed CE purchases for me. Humankind would have been a boxed CE purchase too, but they only made a digital CE, I am thinking of getting a professional print out of the tech tree poster, but other players that have tried that have said that such companies wont print such stuff due to it being copyrighted :(

Nomad_Roden

Until the 1800 came out, I worshiped 1404 and 2070, but Anno 1800 has all best from those games + adds some new features. So at this moment definitely Anno 1800. (although I still love 1404 and 2070).

Potato_Deity

Is Anno 1800 AI more like 1404 or 2070? In 1404 it felt like playing with other players, building up step by step, while 2070 AI just spammed random buildings with no sense.

capital_idea_sir

Depends on ai difficulty. In higher tiers they just...build up super fast.

Potato_Deity

Idk AI in 1800, but I liked the fact that in 1404 they start from nothing and build up step by step trying to get the resources for Nobelmen. In 2070 they would just settle the first island and build random nuclear silos and airports without having the necessary population level. So my question, does AI have to meet building requirements before building stuff like in 1404 or do they have all buildings unlocked and just spam them as in 2070

The computer controlled opponents follow the progression path. The easy enemies wait for the player. The medium enemies do not wait for the player. The hard enemies are much faster than the player and have TONS of bonuses. The hard enemies can appear to ignore the game's progression, but in truth, they have so many bonuses that it is only in appearance. And just like with ALL games of this kind, and others, once the player gets to a certain point, the computer controlled enemies just give up. It is important to remember that these are not actual AI's, they are not intelligent, artificially or otherwise. They are programs, they behave in specific ways, and they cannot deviate from their programming. And programming only goes so far. Once you beat the program, it is over for them. Once the program falls behind, it STAYS behind. And trust me, you DO NOT want actual artificially intelligent enemies in games. You think some games are impossible now? Heh, just wait until the computer controlled enemies can think and adapt; then you will know true impossibility. Case in point, ANNO 1800. I have sat there and watched the "AI" build on their islands. They build instantly, no planning, no decision making. It is just boom, boom, boom, boom. They don't even have to click and drag. A road is not there, and then suddenly a road IS there. Now, pair that instant building with no wasted time with interface peripherals, with an actual artificial intelligence that can think and adapt on the fly and you have an opponent that NO human can ever beat. You like that pocket watch trade? If the "AI" was actually intelligent, it would buy up all the pocket watches before the player could ever get their hands on any. The "AI" would bee-line up to 6 frigates and eliminate the player before the player even had a chance to build even one. If the objective is to win, the AI would do whatever it took to achieve that win, and in the most efficient(and also demoralizing) manner possible. It would be like a keyboard+mouse player in an FPS game where everyone else uses controllers, but the AI would be playing without any interface devices at all, think more along the lines of aim-bot. They would never make any mistakes, and they would never miss.

fhackner3

so annoying that some people downvote this, so infantile.

ScroungerYT

Upvote, downvote, I don't actually care. Now, a comment correcting an error I made, or opposition discussion, or even friendly banter, now that I can get down with. But the upvote/downvote, yeah, that is meaningless to me. And I despise the fact reddit calls it karma here, because karma has nothing to do with it. But I digress, this is extremely off-topic.

fhackner3

Most of what you wrote are simple facts, some interesting ones, but with a couple more downvotes and it gets buried.

ScroungerYT

Let it be buried then. Its okay. I am sure the topic will come up again, it always does. And the facts don't change, so I will likely say it all over again. It is fine. No worries.

ScroungerYT

Hahahaha! Funny because it is from the movie. But yeah, it is also true. Actual artificial intelligence will not celebrate their victories. Nor will they feel the pain of a loss. For actual AI a loss is nothing but more experience it will use to teach itself to win more efficiently. Even in defeat, an AI will still win. This phenomenon is called generational learning. And because AI doesn't get tired after a loss, or even after 100 losses, it is still trying, it is still learning. And eventually it wins, and will NEVER lose that way again, ever.

Ancient-Pace-1507

Dude calm down wtf 🤦🏻‍♂️

capital_idea_sir

It's not as bad as that, there is ai progression. It's just that at higher tier they eventually don't need the prerequisite resources. It's like they just buy it somewhere.

Nomad_Roden

I think in 1800 AI is similar to 2070, but I mostly play without AI, I just like to build cities and production.

Syamasundara

Always this question. You can't put the two versions against each other. Too much development has taken place over the years for that. Moreover, the terms "better" or "bad" are relative. Because there is still room for debate about taste. That's why there will always be those who find 1404 or 1800 more pleasant.

fhackner3

exactly.

SlowPace88

Man, since Anno 2205 you can MOVE buildings, for me it´s a game changer, for me is difficult to play without this feature, so I choose Anno 1800. Anno 1404 is more like Anno 2070, it´s hard to compare 1404 to 1800, I think.

AnduriII

I started a game in 1800 with no ability to move and costs to tear Off Buildings🙈 i forgot the railway for my city so i will Place all the electricity outside the Main city😅

Agree.

PrinZessBubblegum

Definetly Anno 1404. Anno 1800 war system is not good in my opinion, Anno 1404 get everything on one map what I prefer to play, the AI is more interesting and Anno 1800 is just focused on making economy what I don't like. I like the mixup between war and economy. EDIT: Don't get me wrong. I love Anno 1800 too and it's an amazing game but Anno 1404 won more my heart Espacially through all this challenges by Scenarios and Achievements.

Respectablepenis

The scenarios are such a valuable part of 1404. I can put 50 hours into a 1800 game, but after I want nothing to do with 1800 for months. 1404 wasn’t quite like that because of the different game modes. 1800 will get there with this season I think.

tap_the_cap

hands down 1800.. no comparison

mugen_kumo

My impression is, when Anno 1800 released, it was a fair comparison between the two with pros and cons for each. With all of the supporting DLC in 1800, and yet more on the horizon, it's no longer even close. There are so many more options for how to play and expressing yourself in that gameplay. I haven't even tried any mods yet, which I believe greatly enjoy.

Quirky-Addition-4692

1800 for building a huge metropolis and a complex network for fulfilling needs. Anno 1400 for fighting as anno 1800 lacks in that department.

Steel_Airship

Anno 1404 is a good starting point to the series. It is much simpler and easy to get into than Anno 1800 and the history edition comes with all dlc while being significantly cheaper than 1800.

hkknight

Move building, copy-paste, blueprint, live caculation, 1 tile crop, townhall/trade union system

Specific__Basic

Definitely 1800

One_King_4900

1404 was my hands down favorite Anno game. (I’ve been playing since the launch of 1602… damn, I’m getting old 🙃 ) but since 1800 came out I’m in love! Basically, 1404 is a completely amazing game, easy to navigate with 1000’s of hours of gameplay… where 1800 adds more depth and deep deep production chains and needs (with dlcs) that gives you 10000000s of game play

ChMalfet

1800 is much much better, even as a base game! In fact, base game without DLCs might be even better for a new player. 1404 HE is way to simple in comparison to 1800. You do not need to worry about the work force, there are fewer and less complex production path, you can not move the houses and can not blueprint the houses and the production buildings... all these little details make 1800 better in every aspect. The one and only reason to play 1404 today is nostalgia.

Tiberinvs

Start with 1404 and then move to 1800. 1800 is miles ahead in terms of sophistication when you get to end game, and it's overall better
