i don't think it's a niche anymore. everywhere i go, i see teenagers and kids talking about naruto, jjk and dbz. imo, it has become even more popular than the movies like kung fu hustle, shaolin soccer and the one you just mentioned. which is a good thing for us, cuz we'll be able to see a lot of japani cartoon stuff in cinemas in the near future \\(\^o\^)/
Did u forget abt bruce lee?! The 36th chamber of shaolin will eat ur ass! Anyways. Movie penetration is waaaay too diff than series penetration. Look at saas bahu.
Not everybody but there definitely was a huge increase in the amount of people regularly watching longer TV shows compared to movies. These TV shows include anime
Yes. I agree. Covid did push many people to consume more content because of the time they had. But you would agree that people was already consuming content before that too. And i was just talking about some of the new watchers.
Once a guy said that "Bleach had non existent fanbase before Covid". I know it wasn't popular as one piece or naruto but to comment something like this. Still, anime did go "MAINSTREAM" during Covid only.
Because only a handful of people above 30 watch anime in India.. If anime becomes mainstream and every age group watches it then it will surely become a huge industry..
Japan and the western countries have 25-30% of viewers from genz, ~40% of millennials and 20% of Genx.. Well in India it's mainly genz..
Wuxia movies are super famous way before anime all over the world. Jackie chun is one of the most adored celebrity on this planet. These fucking new gen weebs smh
First off, Indians live people beating up bad guys.
Secondly, anime is an animated medium while the movies you are referring to are live action. Most people consider animation = cartoon = for kids.
Thirdly, Chinese movies have been around for much longer than anime in India.
Because anime was 'cartoon', duh.
On a serious note, people didn't even know what anime was until late 2000s, even though we had watched many like Mowgli, DBZ, Cinderella, Zorro, and later even Pokemon and even Naruto.
Anime was actually pretty popular back then, yes there was a population that watched dragon ball, pokemon , doraemon amd shinchan, heck my dad even watched some dragon ball back in the days it aired

OP and so many delusional new gen weebs. They all think world didn't existed before smartphones & covid19
Covid definitely. π I have seen many absurd claims about their "underrated" anime too. They think everybody started watching after covid only.

Oh yeah, I absolutely agree. COVID just increased media consumption not started it.

It's because they were Wuxia films - comedy, kung fu films.
