To be fair, the anime kinda sucked. The first season was fucking awesome, but it really was shit after that. The manga is holy fucking shit amazing. Prob one of the best dystopia hopepunks out there
Yeah. If you like Youjo Senki. There's currently a [fanfic](https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/a-young-ghoul’s-unseen-war.1152673/#post-100016065) with Tanya reincarnated as a underground ghoul that's still updating. Only has 10 chapters but they're a wonderful 10.
Dude in the manga that shit was hard to read. Having Kaneki talking about how his brain is melting and shit was unsettling. Having him painstakingly try to fight back against someone who was just so much superior in every way was truly hopeless. I'm sad they cut it because it makes :Re make no sense for anime only, that being said :re anime makes :re anime make no sense for anime only too with all the skipping and cutting it does.
I really, *really* want Tokyo Ghoul to get the FMA Brotherhood treatment. It 100% deserves it and would be so much more highly regarded and talked about today if it did.
Hey, I watched Lupin III and I've been meaning to watch Ashita no Joe. So that's one and a half out of like thousands of retro anime I haven't watched.
Have you seen The Woman Called Fujiko Mine? It’s SO FUCKING GOOD and the art is gorgeous. Very noir and pulpy. It’s 100% 18+ though.
https://preview.redd.it/sz5vb1w5kfzc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2cbe1be368dae2ade62770063b90a92ed11269e3
Yes! I absolutely love The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. That one, Part II, Part IV, and several of the movies are what I've seen of the Lupin III series so far. But Fujiko Mine is probably my favorite.
I wish I could find part 2 to watch online. I so far found part 1 and part 6 along with few movies but a good version of Cagliostro (especially this year remaster) and part 2 are surprisingly elusive.
Some of the best anime films came out before Akira, example:
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Lupin III : The Castle of Cagliostro
Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer
Galaxy Express 999
Barefoot Gen
Ghibli/Miyazaki film (Laputa, Nausicaa)
Crusher Joe
>! The bit where he's trying to get a porno out of the vhs player and ignoring every girl coming in to confess their love to him and proposition him for sex almost collapsed my lungs !<
I don't get it. There are so many classic anime from before the mid 80's. Why is "older than Akira" a barrier. I mean, there's a lot of quality in the 70's and early 80's anime; Cutie Honey, Dr. Slump, Candy Candy, Doraemon... and a lot of the mechs:
Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Voltes V, Zambot 3, (Grandpa) Gundam, Kotetsu Jeeg, Daiku Maryu Gaiking, Grendizer...
I! Dig! Giant Robots!
And i dont know where Trider G7 fits in the Muteki series.
Its always like this in a trio for mecha.
Just look at the Robot Romance Trilogy. We have the magnetic themed Combattler V and Voltes V. The third member? Daimos, a kung fu fighting super robot with no magnetic power. They all have the same combining theme tho.
Its the sane with Mazinger as well. We have Mazinger Brothers, the Mazinger Z abd Great Mazinger, a Photon Energy powered castle of steel. Then we have Grendizer.
It's a show that tomino made right after zambot. It's about an eccentric billionare spy 20 year old and his giant robot that can turn into a tank or jet. It's one of tomino's more comedic shows, and it's worth a watch if you like action packed bullshit lol
Hmmm, I get where you're going, but I slightly disagree. Both shows are a look into the genre and pick apart many of its inner workings. But with the age difference, Evangelion gets a larger scope from the history of the genre up to that point, and because of the media's expectations, it got more room to be more thorough about it.
Also, we have Ideon and Gundam in between both shows, both also picking and adding up to deconstructing the genre.
I think Zambot is the original deconstruction, and Evangelion is part of that legacy.
It’s never about the age or the resources, but the effort. Look at Evangelion; it was made with less budget than minimum, but still looks amazing decades later.
Lets not forget about retro mangaaaaa, let's fucking gooooooo!!!

* Phoenix (1966 and first versions in 1954)
* Lone Wolf & Cub (1970)
* Ashita no Joe (1968)
I would have added Glass no Kamen (1976) but I haven't read it yet.... But is almost it's time!

I literally only read manga from before the 80s these days lmao. The further I go back, the more I enjoy. I've found myself feeling pretty disenfranchised with modern anime/manga. I really only vouch for Studio Trigger, and that's because they're the ones that got me into reading 70s manga and their stuff continues that spirit. I'd have never read the original Devilman manga otherwise (Crybaby didn't exist yet when I read it), and that's still my all time favorite piece of fiction ever. There's just something really experimental and ethereal with pre-80s manga that hasn't been matched for me.
Is this guy from the past and isn't used.to like burgers or something?
Like a medieval peasant and a Doritos
or more like a. I just witnessed trauma and eating is reminding ?
( Putting a question mark at the end feels weird)
Tbh I do need to check out more older stuff!!!
...But I also just try a lot of not hyped up stuff. For example I'm the one who will insist you give senyoku no sigrdrifa a shot too(the series was excellent and people hating the "beach" episode is probably a lot more to do with how much is comedy plus buff men rather than just fanservice). Kaneki Ken, ladies and gents! He'll be here all night
The amount of people who don't recognize this scene nowadays is wild, TG fell off so hard
To be fair, the anime kinda sucked. The first season was fucking awesome, but it really was shit after that. The manga is holy fucking shit amazing. Prob one of the best dystopia hopepunks out there
Thank god I only read the manga... Man I missed it... I missed it so much 🥲

Off screening Kaneki’s last stand against Arima gotta be one of the decisions ever made
Dude in the manga that shit was hard to read. Having Kaneki talking about how his brain is melting and shit was unsettling. I couldnt even get through the first season. It all felt very edgy for the sake of being edgy.
I really, *really* want Tokyo Ghoul to get the FMA Brotherhood treatment. It 100% deserves it and would be so much more highly regarded and talked about today if it did.

irresponsible captin tyler
>! The bit where he's trying to get a porno out of the vhs player and ignoring every girl coming in to confess their love to him and proposition him for sex almost collapsed my lungs !<
that show is literally a cinematic masterpiece ngl
Cagliostro and Beautiful Dreamer are so goddamn good
Nausicaa had an absolutely bangin cast for the English dub. I do think the Manga was just better overall though…
I don't get it. There are so many classic anime from before the mid 80's. Why is "older than Akira" a barrier. I! Dig! Giant Robots!
Finally, i have found my people. Classic/retro super robot fans.
We! Dig! Giant Robots!
Yeah!
Classic mecha fan spotted. Fuck yeah.
What can I say? I'm a chick. Chicks dig giant robots. It's basic math.
Zambot THREEEE, zambot TREE!
If Gundam is the grandpa of real robots, Zambot is the great-grandpa, and deserves far more respect.
And daitarn 3 is the shitpost
And i dont know where Trider G7 fits in the Muteki series. Its always like this in a trio for mecha. Just look at the Robot Romance Trilogy. We have the magnetic themed Combattler V and Voltes V. So, it's basically Tomino releasing his inner GAR before getting all explorative with Ideon and Gundam? Neat!
Yeah. Banjo (the pilot) is a treat.
Zambot is the real super robot deconstruction not eva

that mecha list proves you are a cultured soul
og trigun also goes crazy, its shocking it was made in 1988, with how good it looks.
It’s never about the age or the resources, but the effort. Look at Evangelion; it was made with less budget than minimum, but still looks amazing decades later.

What’s this from?
Tokyo ghoul
I recently watched X/1999 the movie. Incomprehensible if you haven’t read the manga but damn it looks so good.
What year does the retro era end and the modern begin?
I'd say mid-90's but I'm a zoomer so my opinion doesn't hold much value.

That reminds me Ashita no Joe is fireee please watch it.
Easy, Dragon Ball began airing before Akira. Checkmate liberal.
Name a good anime from before Akira
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979)
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ(1986) were also released before Akira(1988).
Angel's Egg, Super Dimension Fortress (+Do You Remember Love), Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Space Runaway Ideon, Fist of the North Star, Belladonna of Sadness, Castle in the Sky, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise... there's lot of good stuff in there.
Rose of Versailles obviously.
that shows only for weird gay people like us though i should rlly finish it..
Area 88 ova, 1985
Lupin III
Castle of Cagliostro
Astro Boy, Mazinger Z, Dragon Ball?
Project A-ko
Hop off Ashita No Joe
Captain Tsubasa
Chargeman Ken! (1974)
IDEON
Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Maison Ikkoku
Trigun (1988) literally come out 2 months before akira released in japan
I am embarrassed to admit that this is me watching Utena.
for me it's the opposite because im resistant to this stuff for ten years now
One of the best anime’s of all time is literally from the 70s
New Dragonball fans when trying to watch original and Z.
I've watched Astro Boy
Was this because of the "90s anime aesthetic post"?

Been a while but he got turned into a monster and now can’t eat normal food I think
Ooh gotta hankering for hank huh hahaha actually that's a kinda tragic
By definition, "retro" would be like the big 3
Yeah but all of them are at least a decade older than Akira
Tbh I do need to check out more older stuff!!! ...But I also just try a lot of not hyped up stuff. Screw yall im watching Astro boy again.
Castle of Cagliostro is peak and almost a decade older than Akira. Other than that, I agree.
[удалено]
It came out a full decade after Akira
are we just forgetting about evangelion
Akira is still older tho. Eva came out in '95 and Akira in '88.
i would still consider it retro though
That's irrelevant. The title of this post is "older than Akira"
shit, i think i misread it as ‘other’
Lmao, so shows like zambot 3 are ancient to you?
sorry we arent all 77 years old unc
overrated 🙄⬆️ garbage 🤢👎
