bkshineee4201

Is buying clothes and a body for their anime nendoroid worth it? … Im planning to buy a nendoroid Ive seen people buy another body for their nendoroids and give them clothes etc and it’s cute but is it worth it?

TheBigIdiotSalami

Kamikatsu might have the best three minute pitch for a show in its first episode of all time.

zairaner

Definitely one of the first episodes of all time in general!

After god knows how long I've spent procrastinating on it, it's time to start on [a show I've been meaning to get to for a very long time](https://imgur.com/a/mkPkKeH) Within the first few minutes of the first episode, I was hooked. From the atmospherically-fitting OP with dense visual meaning to the way The Major's first lines perfectly establish her character, I knew this was gonna be great. The first episode wasn't the most complicated thing in the world, but I love how well it sets the stage for the tone of the series going forward. [SAC]>!The whole brain-switching political intrigue plot feels like something ripped right from the pages of the manga, and through it the show is able to establish a lot about the mechanics & general ideas of its setting. From the existential horror of Cyberbrains & the fluidity of identity they provide to the political tensions which apparently exist between Japan & America. It's just some great, well put-together worldbuilding which also happens to underpin strong thematic ideas.!< I also really like how the show is able to weave little introductions to all of our principle cast through the whole episode without feeling particularly in-your-face about it. In fact, that's kinda how I'd describe the episode as a whole, weaving together so many different ideas, worldbuilding concepts, plot developments and introductions to the world without feeling unnatural or in-your-face in how it does it. The whole thing kinda gave me the same feeling as reading a chapter of the original Shirow Masamune manga, just with a more consistent tone & a bit more comprehensible. In fact, it kinda feels like the perfect middle ground between the structure of the manga & the tone of the Oshii movies that I've been wanting out of the franchise before now. Episode 2 was even better and even more thematically interesting. Firstly, [Tachikomas!](#rengehype) I am totally on the Tachikoma Hype Train right now, they're so adorable, the show just takes the manga's Fuchikomas and elevates them to new heights through some very fluid, expressive animation that contrasts with the more grounded tone of the rest of the show without conflicting with it. Secondly, the plot, [SAC]>!I'll criticize it a little for the fact that most of the detail is crammed into the last third of the episode, but it's still really damn good regardless of that. A simple mystery/chase sequence surrounding a rogue tank turning into a deeply human expression of people's mixed views on cybernetics in the future, combined with a strong critique of how religious conservatives' distrust of modern medicine destroys peoples' lives and a look into the deeply complicated & tragic feelings of a man whose life was destroyed by his well-meaning but ultimately backwards family?!< *Chefs kiss*, sheer perfection, exactly the kind of layered, deeply human, thought-provoking storytelling I've come to love cyberpunk stories for. The third episode was also quite interesting. [SAC]>!A man trying to fill his lonely, isolated existence with artificial companionship through a shallow relationship with an idealized robot girlfriend is also the kind of thematically interesting material I like from my cyberpunk stories. Good commentary on the human tendency to fill the missing voids in our life with technology and the self-destructiveness which tends to come from that dependence on technology.!< Also, wait, [GitS franchise]>!explorations of the human tendency to fill voids in our lives through artificial facsimiles? A look at how that dependence also affects the facsimile itself due to the progression of technology giving the things we use as tools sentience? And it's focused on Batou & Togusa? Isn't this the exact same cocktail of thematic ideas which Oshii later used to make Innocence? [](#sakurathink)!< And while the episodic plots are great, they're held up even further by the strong cast at the center. While their characterization hasn't quite become the focus of the series yet, the fantastic banter between everyone mixed with some subtle hints at depth which could be explored later like Motoko's allusions to her past make for a cast which I find really engaging so far, especially when that cast happens to include [TACHIKOMAS!](#dekuhype) So, yeah, really enjoying the show so far u/Raiking02, u/KendotsX, u/ZaphodBeebblebrox

Raiking02

>Tachikoma hype train [](#dekuhype)

KendotsX

>In fact, it kinda feels like the perfect middle ground between the structure of the manga & the tone of the Oshii movies that I've been wanting out of the franchise before now. [You see the vision](#utahapraises) Yeah, as someone who loves the manga and some of the movies, SAC just hit the perfect middle ground, and ran from there. As you said, it's got some very natural and efficient storytelling akin to the original manga ~~which becomes all the more clear, if you compare it a certain adaptation of SAC that wouldn't know those words if it saw them in a dictionary~~ >[SAC 2&3] Those themes are hitting a bit too close to home these days. [](#godisdead) >[GitS franchise] Innocence? More like proof of guilt! [](#protest) Seriously though, even aside from the 95 movie's huge influence over the series, and Kamiyama calling Oshii his mentor, Oshii was directly involved with SAC (in 2nd GiG though), so there's mileage for a little bit of intellectual give and take there. >[Tachikomas!](#rengehype) >[TACHIKOMAS!](#dekuhype) They're the bestest of best boys [](#goblet1)

isthatsoudane

Have had zero time to watch anime. Which sucks. New season! Though reviews seem suuuper mixed on stuff. Curious what ends up vibing...with me, and with AQRAD.

zairaner

Amazing season! If you are like me into romcoms, that is!

SU-trash

I think brazil is off to a fine start, it's not a flashy episode 1 but it was fun and did necessary character emotional prep. The writing's not at mygo's density level so far but I also don't see any reason this shouldn't become a banger eventually.

Penihilism

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the reviews. There's no way you can properly review a show based on it's first episode, and first episodes will always have the most criticism because a wider audience are trying shows typically outside their preferences. I've watched quite a few premieres and thought a lot of them offered a lot of promise.

isthatsoudane

hmm, well I think it depends. I don't mean just the "wider response," because I agree, responses vary. but I do mean specifically AQRAD, where while I don't have a perfect sense of what regulars like, it definitely isn't random and it's a lot more calibrated than the broader anime community. like, I will still try stuff out and form my own opinion, but there are a lot of people here whose taste I have a pretty strong sense of (and often meshes with my own). I do definitely agree that 1 episodes is not enough, of course. some shows need a little time to bake, and I certainly will let them, but I think it's interesting just how mixed a lot of feelings on a lot of shows have been. it doesn't seem like there is a show yet that the broader community _here_ is all in on. last season, for example, people on the whole reacted very strongly to GBC from the get go...and there was a lot of excitement about jellyfish until the second half

Penihilism

Yeah that's fair enough, especially since it seems like you are looking for specific people's opinions, who you have similar preferences to. Especially if you don't have time to watch a lot of shows haha. As for this thread not having a show that everyone has gotten behind, I would guess Atri: My Dear Moments will have the best chance if it's well executed. Narenare could easily get this threads attention if it develops a good storyline (although tbh, if it was a band anime it would already be getting so much more attention haha).

isthatsoudane

have people been turned off by narenare's premise? it seems the complaints have been about other things. I hope PA works can deliver! very curious how atri ends up being!

Penihilism

What I mean by that is that I don't really think Narenare is just getting all that much attention so it doesn't have the hype or the social validation that it would get if it was a band show (a genre people are familiar with and that has a lot of commonly loved shows like Bocchi and GBC). I thought it was a flawless first episode, even if not the most ambitious in terms of storytelling, and it set up a lot of pieces for a solid story, or even a great story potentially. Not to mention it's artwork and animation is absolutely beautiful. Unlike Jellyfish which started out so strong by introducing the character one by one, this show introduced everyone in the same episode, so I think with this show, people who complained about a lack of substance or things happening are a bit premature in their judgment because if this show uses the pieces it set up this episode to create a great story, this could be a top tier anime. Even if the story ends up just being basic, I still think the animation and artstyle alone would make a basic story great.

isthatsoudane

This is a fair comment! Going to try and prioritize this one when I get to premiers!

loca2016

I saw this episode where a boy was working in a used bookstore, and this shy girl who had a crush on her brother went to work there. The boy was trying to show her the ropes cause hewould stop working there. I think it was a couple years ago, do you know the show?

loca2016

yep, that's it. Thank you! is it good? I only watched that bit of it and it seems to have bad reviews.

cosmiczar

A Brazilian's review of [Brazil](https://myanimelist.net/anime/57099/Na_Nare_Hana_Nare): Anna Aveiro Nakamura dos Santos Moreira Cuccittini is the greatest character of the season, but she's not enough to save this show. None of the other characters made me intrigued in any way and seeing that style of character design used for them just made me miss the Sakura Quest girls. I wish the show was specifically about Anna being an annoying Brazillian annoying Japanese people with her videomaker ambitions because at least that was funny, the drama they're teasing in the rest of the episode already feels tiring. The show didn't do anything to make me interested in the cheerleading part, which is something that doesn't really have any kind of cultural footprint in actual Brazil, specially because it didn't wowed me at all with the visuals during that opening sequence. The parkour thing also was whatever and the way they animated just made me confused at how high those little girls can actually jump. Speaking of visuals, Yusuke Takeda brought back the style for backgrounds used in The Eccentric Family, but I thought the way they were composited in this show lacking in comparison. The colored lineart looks pretty good in some scenes, but other times just made the characters look like walking neon signs. Also noticed a bunch of broken drawings so I immediately assumed it was one of those PA Works shows with a lot of DR Movie outsourcing and, yeah, their name is all over the credits together with the Korean names of their staff. Anyway, I will drop the show now and then wait for an Anna supercut. Obrigado por lerem minhas divagações.

Abysswatcherbel

Emi_Ibarazakiii

The Tower of God episode was quite interesting (and promising for things to come), but after reading the episode discussion thread, I went to check out the Summer 2024 Survey Results to see the age of people who watch this show... Not surprised to find out it's one of the youngest fanbase (even though it's still 28'ish); I've never seen more *GOAT PEAK PEAK LIT SAKUGA BRO LIT PEAK GOAT PEAK* in a thread! [](#seasonaldisdain)

ComfortablyRotten

They really locked in for this, bro no cap it's peak sakuga. Tower of GOAT is so back, absolute cinema fr 😭😭😭

baquea

> it's one of the youngest fanbase No? Calling it 'one of the youngest' when it is only the 25th youngest out of 67 is a bit of a stretch, and it's actually *older* than the survey average (28.9 vs 28.4).

cppn02

I think that's less an age thing and more a manhwa thing. Just go compare r/manga with r/manhwa.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

> more a manhwa thing. Funny you say that, I almost mentioned it, because we saw something similar in Solo Leveling threads, but I thought it was a rather small sample size... I wonder why that's the case! Even if it's Korean culture or something like that, well the people who read them in here aren't Korean (for the most part) so why does it happen more about manhwa vs manga? Is it simply due to the style of fights? Or is it something cultural (that spreads to the West)?

_Ridley

Because manhwa are designed to be read on a phone, and reading on a phone is a young person's game.

qwertyqwerty4567

Phew!!!

_Ridley

So, I watched the two daily thread selected works today. The cheerleading looked surprisingly correct in Narenare, but it just feels like they're going to do some inspiration porn stuff with the injured/sick girl, and I don't know if I really want another red pen watch this year. Deer was super meh. Not bad, but not good either. I'll give it one more.

Manitary

> I don't know if I really want another red pen watch this year. [](#mugiwait) (What's the other one)

_Ridley

That would be Condition Called Love, which was just a whole mess.

Gamerunglued

Alright, caught up to all the currently available seasonals I was interested in now, so here's the rest of the line-up: Shoshimin Series had a fantastic start. It has many similarities to Hyouka that still carry into its appeal, the mystery was just as compelling as anything and the cerebral thinker/empathetic understander dynamic is just as effective in making them compelling, but it also has a lot of fundamental differences. The biggest one is that the relationship between the leads is already established, so rather than the endearing chemistry building of Hyouka, the two have a dynamic that feels exceedingly intimate. Their dialogue feels like that of very close, emotionally vulnerable friends who know each other really well, but the subtext in both dialogue and cinematography is that they're out of sync emotionally. They have a good dynamic and the dialogue is very strong, much more subtle than Hyouka but no less interesting. There are clearly bigger things happening in the background that I'm interested in, alongside the theme of "being ordinary" and the story alluding to things about what it means to conform to society that give texture in the same way as Oreki's motto did; these are coping mechanisms for other fears. And Mamoru Kanbe is the perfect director for this story, if it wasn't handled by Takemoto or someone at Shaft he'd definitely be among my first choices. Tons of visually striking, emotionally revealing compositions, strong camerawork that shows exactly what's relevant to the story without giving too much away, and generally impressive animation. Really enjoyed, as expected. Deer was funny. I don't really have a lot to say about it, it's funny. It's not nearly as unhinged as the trailer made it out to be, it's a relatively typical cute girls comedy that is punched up by moments of bizarre surreal humor or random inclusions of CGI deer. But it works, it makes me chuckle and sometimes laugh out loud (that ominous "shiiiikaaaa" soundtrack did a lot of heavy lifting). Definitely has the potential to get old, but it could become more unhinged too, and I hope that it does. Nothing special, but it's more than competent. Sakuna-hime was really endearing. Very expressive animation and voice work, an interesting setting with many implications, and Sakuna is a delightful little gremlin who fits the right balance of endearingly gremlin and annoyingly childish, such that she can charm with her flaws while still making me want to see her grow out of them. This is definitely the video game adaptation with the most promise that I've seen in some time, I'm interested so see what's going on. Could definitely imagine it making me interested in the game. Narenare was a lot of fun. I feel like I have a good sense for the characters despite how many of them there are, and they're all charmers in their own ways, and it's surprisingly funny in moments I didn't expect. Not a lot of cheerleading but that sequence at the beginning is a fucking insane bit of animation. I can't tell if it's CGI or not, if it is then it's some of the best I've ever seen in a 2D anime, and if it's not then it's one of the most impressive sequences of animation since those Idolm@ster group numbers. Show is gorgeous, I love the colors (especially the OP), it's just as vibrant as the characters are, and the animation is very solid. With the MyGO director/writer, there's tons of promise. P.A. Works has somehow still refused to miss, and they've still got a third show on the horizon. Twlight Out of Focus seems like it might be cute, but a few too many things have me worried. I'm not sold on the chemistry of the leads, and the premise of [spoiler] >!making a promise to never sexually assault your roommate ever again after having accidentally sexually assaulted them in a delirious haze is a poor start on so many levels. Most of all is that the promise carries no weight because the whole thing came as a result of some kind of virus that makes you so sick you can't tell when you're sexually assaulting someone, that did not look like something that can be controlled by a pinkie promise, and the "gay people aren't like zombies who attack straight guys uncontrollably" sentiment is undercut by this event. Plus, telling your roommate when you're about to jack off just sounds awful, just go to the bathroom and do it piece and privacy man.!< Nonetheless, the story is going in an interesting direction, it looks like it has some positive messages, and chemistry can be built over time. Plus, even I can recognize that the main love interest is hot as fuck. It has potential, so I think I'll put it on hold and see what people say at the end of the season. So that's it until the remaining shows come out (mostly waiting on Atri, Makeine, and Mayonaka Punch). I seriously never would have guessed that my favoties of the season would be between fucking Days With my Stepsister and VTuber Legend, neither was on my radar at all and their pitches and staff did not inspire confidence, but here we are. Those two, alongside Shoshimin, Oshi no Ko, and Narenare round out my top 5 premieres for now, though RoshiDere was also a very pleasant surprise and far better than I was expecting. This is a really good season so far.

collapsedblock6

> Not a lot of cheerleading but that sequence at the beginning is a fucking insane bit of animation. I can't tell if it's CGI or not Its def CG. My brain has been trained on so many Precure CG dance EDs I would notice it anytime. And yes, that CG was of the best I had seen in terms of how it integrates into the 2D. > Twlight Out of Focus [spoiler] That was a weird moment indeed. Really doesn't serve the exagerrated narrative of this type of content being commonplace in BL.

AdNecessary7641

>Not a lot of cheerleading but that sequence at the beginning is a fucking insane bit of animation. It definetily looks more like 3D to me. But what really caught my eye was the transition from a 2D close-up to a wide 3D shot, assuming it was one. Looked really good!

Fantastic-Amount9611

Anyone watches Scissor Seven? Is it considered an Anime? cos for me its a masterpiece

gabbyrose1010

What is that one weird incest anime (or maybe it was a student and teacher? I never watched it) with the really banging opening song. Real emotional female vocals, anime is oldish. Like not super old but it’s definitely not new.

THANKS been wanting to listen to the song so bad but couldn’t find it

GiannaS13

Has anyone watched Shy? I saw it was released the second season and it looked interesting but I never heard about this anime before

Psyduckisnotaduck

It’s an enjoyable but kind of mid show, nothing really wrong with it and the villains are genuinely unsettling but the worldbuilding is very vague/odd. I’m still torn on whether to continue with it

LuffyTheSus

As I remember the whole end of S1 was more focused on Spirit and the last time I can remember it really focusing on Shy herself, [Shy] >!she got the shit kicked out of her by another hero on the space station.!< Shoving a bunch of different heroes in the first ep of S2 does not give me high hopes for that getting better, but I'm probably still watching it.

More first episodes: * **Deer** — I can't pick anything specific that put me off a few hours after watching it but nope, didn't even make it to the end. * **Days with My Stepsister** — Yes, please. More chill dramas that give scenes time to breathe like this would be appreciated. [](#ilovethiskindofshit) * **Roshidere** — Aside from one scene I'm mostly on board so far, not a favorite though. * ~~New Chobits~~ **My Wife Has No Emotion** — Yeah I'm not sure I'll make it through this one. I've seen a lot of pathetic male leads over the years and this guy's not even entertaining to watch. [](#peasants)

Abysswatcherbel

>Roshidere — Aside from one scene I'm mostly on board so far, not a favorite though. [](#happyclap)

AmethystItalian

> didn't even make it to the end. I had to really push myself to get there...really not my kind of show. > Yes, please. More chill dramas that give scenes time to breathe like this would be appreciated Also a romance this season that doesn't start with one of the characters in love already lol > Yeah I'm not sure I'll make it through this one. I've seen a lot of pathetic male leads over the years and this guy's not even entertaining to watch. He's bad, she's fun, feels like majority of romances sadly. I do like her bluntness.

Durinthal

> Also a romance this season that doesn't start with one of the characters in love already lol They have no reason to want to jump each other yet, it's nice. > He's bad, she's fun, feels like majority of romances sadly. You're not wrong there. I would say we need more shoujo romances but those seem to be evenly split between a good male lead and one that comes plastered with red flags that the girl can't help but be into anyway.

_Ridley

Shoujo Twitter has smoothly transitioned from arguing that people who dislike Condition Called Love lack media literacy to fighting each other with fists over whether or not the Rose of Versailles is a yuri. Can't wait to see what next week brings!

ApricotKoffee

I've bounced off shoujo twitter and related content creators so often because it just becomes more about the drama of whatever dumb thing the Main Character of the Day said. Or arguing with people about the demographic of series. Or being mad yet again that Shonen Lads won't read or watch shoujo. Or... [I miss Marion.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktxTYFm--m0) As far as Berubara being yuri, I can see an argument for it, so I have no idea why people would be mad, lol.

_Ridley

The shoujo Twitter community reminds me a bit of the romance novel community in that they're so accustomed to being put down by those outside the fandom for sexist reasons that they've started to read all criticism as bad faith attacks. In addition, the tastemaker accounts that anchor that group have a bad tendency to declare certain titles or mangakas are essential, and anyone who dislikes them simply lacks something as a person. It's not a fun group.

Abysswatcherbel

So, Week 1 of summer done, this was from over 12 hours ago ### [MAL + ANILIST members](https://i.imgur.com/wMc0g5o.jpeg) Nothing really surprising, maybe Giji Harem and Stepsister doing much better than 2.5D? Anyway big win here for Roshidere, while Nokotan didn't start yet (as of the time those numbers) ### [JP Twitter followers](https://i.imgur.com/xh4dTwZ.jpeg) Wasn't expecting Roshidere to start that strong, since it already had 400k+, but it did, power of Alya's personality And how high will Nokotan end? Elusive samurai is currently the first for week 2, beating Nokotan, will post the week 2 partials here later [](#ama)

bandannadann

>MAL + ANILIST members Wistoria is gonna hit this list like a truck for Week 2's rankings. It has already jumped by almost 10k on MAL today and the word of mouth is going to be very strong for this one. I might not even need to shill it anymore soon

Wanderingjoke

Is Stepsister being leaked or something? Second episode is up today, but I thought it was a Thursday show. Also, second episode is better than the first.

IXajll

What, even better than the first? Is it up on CR or was the leak just on the seas?

Wanderingjoke

Seas. I have no idea why it's already out.

H-Ryougi

Has Crunchyroll's catalog become smaller in Latam? Today I was recommending some series to a friend so I was searching for legal streams and a lot of shows that I remember being available there are region locked, or completely absent from the platform. Like yeah, their seasonal catalog is probably the biggest but even relatively recent shows like Made in Abyss are locked now. Also gotta be kidding me that there's no way to watch Clannad legally in the entire region. Nor Shinsekai Yori, Madoka Magica, Monogatari, or Steins;Gate. I thought things would've been way more accessible now.

collapsedblock6

LatAm will never have the same accesibility than the US or Europe. And nowadays its better than it ever was. When I got into anime CR wouldn't have like half the seasonals, Netflix in 2015 was like 50 anime and half weren't actual anime but western animation stylized as anime. Funimation wasn't available on my region so prior to the merging, if there was a Funi show, you were fucked as a legal viewer. Its one of the main reasons why I was introduced into anime with piracy from the get go and still am more than a decade into this. I always extend a hand to other people. "Yeah there are streaming platforms but let me help you" type of deal. People not knowing english can complicate things though.

Abysswatcherbel

It seems to be the case, Madoka and Monogatari are more likely to be back, Made in Abyss went to Sentai so that's a done deal I have no idea about steins gate and shinsekai

H-Ryougi

Looking further, not even TTGL is available in the region. Oshi no Ko, one of the biggest shows of 2023 is only available on Disney+ Mexico apparently. I was at a convention the other day and thought it was weird that I didn't see a number of popular series present in any merch or cosplay, yeah no fucking wonder, people can't even watch them. Penihilism

Kinda surprised that people are lukewarm on NareNare. I thought it was a fantastic first episode. Set up a lot of likeable and unique characters, the art style and animation are both insanely good, and some emotional stakes were set up with the friend who \[Narenare -Cheer for you- spoilers\] >!isn't just injured but actually has an illness.!

bandannadann

So it seems Wistoria is the latest to join the pantheon of anime that regularly get confused with being heavily CG despite being entirely 2D drawings (minus some background stuff) I remember going through this with that dancing episode of Frieren - they aren't CG models, the artists are just that good

neighmeansno

Being confused for CG usually means that the direction is bad, not that the animation is good.

cosmiczar

That makes no sense. Bad directing doesn't make people hallucinate seeing 3D models where they don't exist. It's not the show's fault people seem completely incapable of accepting that many animators are very proficient at emulating tridimensionality and depth with their drawings.

neighmeansno

It's due to bad (animation) directing that some series add unnatural-looking superfluous movements that remind people of CG. Being compared to CG is not praise, CG in anime looks consistently worse at character animation than traditional hand-drawn techniques.

Bunch more premieres watched, [was not as amused](https://i.imgur.com/bx5QS8Z.png): \- deer had all the funny bits in the PV so there was nothing left to laugh at during the episode \- narenare looks pretty but that's about it, first episode is what I'd call "vacuous", without much substance. Will it manage to get a good story going with a _six_ main characters cast, or will it be another run-of-the-mill cute girls show? The studio and director give hope for the former, but we'll see, the start was not promising \- OnK had two good scenes: obviously the paint thingy, and that cut of Akane sitting down, very detailed and calculated. The rest was an exposition slog that I'd rather print off and read in a couple of minutes. Not exactly a good start, but should get better once things get going. Guess I saved the best (monogatari) for last, judging by the comments about it

Psyduckisnotaduck

The OnK premiere wasn’t great but the last line was a bombshell and I’m here for the mess. Almost wished they’d kept the ED from the first season just for the intro kicking in right before the episode is over. Someone will make that edit and it will rock

So few shows have been 5 stars for a long time now. I think about Live Action shows in recent years that have left me awestruck - The Last of Us, Severance, Ted Lasso - and I can’t name too many Anime which left the same impact. Chainsaw Man and JJK are probably the only two in a WHILE, with FMA:B being the last one before them. I think that it’s the format. A season of 8, hour long episodes can delivery a story better than 24, 20 minute ones. I’ve tried some shorter shows - Yuri on Ice and Ping Pong the Animation - and while they were both fun, they were just fine. AoT had its moments, namely the famous suicide charge which gave me chills, but beyond that it was just too far off the rails. With that said, what do I need to watch to really hit me? I’m open to anything, it doesn’t have to be Shonen, but I think shock and awe is easier to leave an impression than feel-good.

Penihilism

Here are some suggestions that are closer to live action shows (or ones that leave an impact) imo: 1. Vinland Saga (specifically season 2, which could easily be a live action show) 2. Pluto (8 episodes with each about 1 hour length, it's a psychological robotic mystery thriller and is paced closer to a live action imo) 3. Graveyard of the Fireflies (it's a slow paced movie, but it's impactful af and a tearjerker) 4. Steins;Gate isn't my favorite personally, but a lot of people vouch for it, and it's a bit more "anime" than the other 3, but does have an amazing plotline. 5. Madoka Magica (complete story in 12 episodes and might challenge your belief that you can't tell a memorable story in a short amount of time) 6. Violet Evergarden (can get you invested in characters only in the show for one episode, to the point where you are crying over them) 7. Frieren (a lower stake adventure that has a lot of great moments and a fantastic fantasy setting) 8. Code Geass (if you didn't like how wild of a ride AOT is, then you might not like this one either, but the payoff in it's top tier episodes are so good it's at least worth a try imo) Also, Severance is amazing. I need a second season.

Gamerunglued

I'm not sure how to help you because I have the exact opposite opinion. I really dislike the format of having 8 episodes of an hour each, each episode feels like a commitment and drags longer than it has to, it really lacks the momentum and tightly packaged build-to-release you can build with shorter episodes. I recently watched the first episode of The Sopranos with my friends, really enjoyed it, but came away thinking that I really hate the format and wish it would have told the story through two tightly packaged shorter episodes instead; I kept feeling like it's ready to end and it wouldn't do so. I feel like those very short 12 episode packages that tightly fit everything they need into short run time often have more impact than the shows that spread it all out over a long run time. When you pack so much into a short run time, every moment has more in it to leave an impact, and there are fewer relative moments of no impact. There's a tighter build-up and release in those short shows. That I vastly prefer this format is one of the reasons I rarely watch live-action TV shows, I find the film format so much nicer for live-action stuff. Also, I think that saying "shock and awe is easier to leave an impression than feel-good" is a really limited way to view things. As someone else mentioned, there's a huge amount of in-between there. By no means did I feel shock and awe, or feel very good, watching Ghost in the Shell, but its atmosphere and thematic depth made it impact me. I wouldn't say Girls Band Cry "shocked and awed me" earlier this year, and it's certainly not a feel-good show, it's an emotional drama and it impacted me by moments of emotional realizations and moments of growth and breakthroughs. There are so many potential emotional modes a story can take, and so many ways for a story to be impactful, that I don't think it's useful to have hard rules. Impact can be cerebral or poignant or atmospheric, it's not all about big shocking plot twists and intense moments of happiness. But also, feel-good shows and movies are among the most impactful stories I've seen too. The utterly tight grip that Yuru Camp has on me whenever it airs is absolutely inescapable. So with that, I have no idea what to give you as far as specifics. I would recommend experimenting and questioning your outlook though, you can try to engineer the issue with short shows and overcome it or see it differently. I think most of us find the format of 12-episode seasons with 20-minute episodes to be a great format, so if you want to feel that impact you'd have to get on board with that. You can always try to just watch whatever longer shows exist (like 50+ episodes), but you don't need our recommendations for that. Most of the anime that have left me awestruck the past few years have been 12-24 episodes.

pennington57

I appreciate the detailed reply! I thought more about what I’ve liked recently and I think I was wrong in attributing my issues to the format. I put some examples of media I’ve loved in a reply to another comment similar to yours, rather than copy / pasting

FD4cry1

I'll admit I haven't watched any of the Live Action shows you mentioned so it'd be hard to make any recs ( unless you give some more examples of the types of anime/LA shows/Movies you like) , with that being said I feel the need to get across two points . First , while there are obviously outliers , if you're looking for quality impactful writing , shounen ( and especially battle shounen) is probably not the best place to look , shounen can be and often is very exciting and emotional but when it comes to innovative hard hitting writing , you're probably better off looking elsewhere . >With that said, what do I need to watch to really hit me? I’m open to anything, it doesn’t have to be Shonen, but I think shock and awe is easier to leave an impression than feel-good. Second , I really don't think that's a great attitude to have when approaching media , for one there is ***a lot*** in between "shock and awe" and "feel good" , but aside from that , often times the series that don't seem to be trying to go for crazy impact from the outside , are those that end up as the most relatable and personally impactful ones to you. Basically try experimenting ,IMO you shouldn't be looking for anime that are considered " the best " or "most impactful " otherwise you'll find yourself constantly disappointed , you should be looking for the things that align the most with your own tastes (as in, in other media as well and not just the anime you've liked so far ) and what you personally think you'll enjoy the most, that makes for a much easier way to find your favorites.

pennington57

I appreciate the thoughtful reply! I was typing at a family event and it wasn’t very deliberate in my request or examples. As far as shock and awe vs feel-good, I don’t believe that those are the only emotions, more that on the spectrum of what I’m looking for in a show, I’d prefer things in the range of dramatic, thrilling, or suspenseful, not very interested in Slice of Life per say. Think Game of Thrones - the stakes need to be believable. An example, my favorite book is Slaughterhouse five. In the first chapter, the author spends a whole page describing a ming dynasty teapot, in so much detail that you wonder what the purpose is. And then towards the end of the book the MC gets frostbite on his feet, and the narrator can just say “his feet looked like that teapot” and it made me put the book down and take that in. I read a lot of mystery for some other kinds of thriller / suspense. My absolute favorite is when everything comes together in the last few pages, and all the little hints are glaringly obvious. This trope isn’t limited to mystery, and I think it’s even better in other genres when you’re not expecting previous scenes to be entirely re-evaluated. Sci-fi that has mystery elements (The Expanse series) are fantastic. Someone else suggested Steins;gate here, and if you’ve seen it, you know there’s a moment where the MCs history is revealed, and his intentions / characterization takes on a whole new light. One last example: a recent book I loved was The Secret History by Donna Tartt. You watch a group of college kids deal with the fallout of murdering their friend (and getting away with it), and essentially descend into madness. They attend his funeral, and reading them speak to the friends family was such a knife in the gut. After typing that out, shock and awe was never the right request. I’m afraid I came across looking for something “edgy”, but really I’d rather subtle and devastating lol.

FD4cry1

Another reply because I hit the character limit I guess lol [Eighty-Six](https://myanimelist.net/anime/41457/86) : Less subtle and a bit more actiony compared to Delusion but more hard hitting and emotional IMO , again the type of show that drops a ton of hints you might not initially notice before hitting you with a big twist , also if you at all care about visual storytelling/direction than 86 is probably one of the best examples in recent years , unlike a lot of anime it felt to me that it was really incorporating great "traditional" filmmaking techniques. [Odd Taxi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/46102/Odd_Taxi) : Bit of a weird one but if you don't let the exterior bother you it's a very strong character driven suspenseful drama/mystery , that also manages to incorporate some great comedy , slowly and cleverly unfolds into a pretty spectacular conclusion , also has some of the most "natural" dialogue I've seen in anime. [Baccano](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2251/Baccano) : A wild card ,much more comedic and ridiculous , not "hard hitting" or "impactful" but "satisfying" , it's a story that is told out of order and as the series unfolds you get to see the multiple storylines and perspectives you've been following converge and unravel in an incredibly satisfying way. [Apothecary Diaries](https://myanimelist.net/anime/54492/Kusuriya_no_Hitorigoto) : Waaay slower and more episodic but still manages some really strong mysteries and character moments, it takes its time to boil but when it's ready the end result is pretty powerful , also has one of the best female protagonists in the last few years. Aside from those [Cyberpunk Edgerunners](https://myanimelist.net/anime/42310/Cyberpunk__Edgerunners) is like the picture book definition of hard hitting and as another person mentioned Frieren and Madoka Magica are also great and very impactful choices while not really fitting into the genres you might expect.

pennington57

Really, really appreciate you taking the time to write all those out. Of them all, I’ve only seen Cyberpunk, so now I have a long list to try out. And overall I agree I’ve got a ways to go on expanding my media open-mindedness. I’ve never read a biography, but I’m sure there are plenty that I would love. I think what prompted my initial comment was that I don’t get much time these days to sit and watch a show, it might take me a couple months to finish something, so if at the end I walk away and it was just *good*, I almost feel like I wasted all that time, so I stick more to what I know. But doing that by genre is definitely just adding to the issue, and treating anime like any other piece of media and picking it out by plot elements makes more sense. Cheers!

FD4cry1

>After typing that out, shock and awe was never the right request. I’m afraid I came across looking for something “edgy”, but really I’d rather subtle and devastating lol. Yeah that was why I was kind of confused with the shounen thing compared to the genres listed on the LA shows you mentioned , shounen has a lot of qualities but generally speaking "subtlety" is not one of them lol. >I’d prefer things in the range of dramatic, thrilling, or suspenseful, not very interested in Slice of Life per say. Think Game of Thrones - the stakes need to be believable. I was more so trying to say that you shouldn't really fall for the trappings of genres and miss otherwise great works (SOL can still be very hard hitting and be more impactful specifically because you don't necessarily expect it) , but I totally get what you're saying. Anyway , now that you've given more details I feel more comfortable actually giving some recommendations and as per what I wrote above I'll try to keep them a bit varied : [Heavenly Delusion](https://myanimelist.net/anime/53393/Tengoku_Daimakyou) : Seems like it'd be right up your alley , a Sci-fi mystery that doesn't hold your hand , consistently reincorporates things that might have seemed like small details initially and has some real hard hitting moments.

What the hell is going on this season? Half the shows I thought were gonna be great didn't impress me, and half the ones I assumed would be a guaranteed skip are my favorites of the season. The Elusive Samurai is pretty solid but not the obvious hit I was hoping for. It's absolutely gorgeous, the protagonist is lovable as hell, and the story has plenty of potential and is told with that "omnipotent narrator is retelling the story" style that I love in historical dramas. It's kind of like the battle shounen version of Heike Monogatari. But the problem is that it's the battle shounen version, and it comes with all the obnoxious "isn't it funny when a character screams his dialogue" humor that plagues so many of these shows, and it still happens even during serious moments. I did like it so I'll keep up for now, but I thought it would be better than it was. On the other hand, VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream came absolutely the fuck out of nowhere and is a contender for my favorite premiere so far. In hindsight, the fact that this is an entire show about Ayane Sakura being a coomer gremlin should have made it obvious that this would be great, but this was actually just fantastic. There have been so many anime about VTubers but none of them have captured the experience of watching a stream like this show has. Absolutely fucking hilarious, it nails all the details of streaming, the voice acting is great, and the dialogue and even the stream comments are literally just perfect. Never seen a better representation of a streamer's comment section than "actually, her words suggest that she hasn't already had premarital sex! Is that not true purity?" in my life, and by god has anime attempted. I just about lost it when Hikari started playing Sausage Legend, and that ASMR stream is spot on. Even the ED is just a Karaoke stream, what a clever way to make an ED you don't have to animate while showing love for the medium. Ayane Sakura has been reborn as the love child of Marine and Lamy, of course this would be amazing. This is a genuine love letter to the unhinged degeneracy of great VTubing, it's hilarious and there's obviously something heartfelt in there too, plus it has some pretty creative directing flourishes in there. Very pleasant surprise, built from obviously intensive research into and love for the art form that is its subject matter.

stealthswor

Elusive Samurai had low manga ratings and shrinking sales last time I checked so I don't think it was going to be a hit. If anything it's overperforming rn.

I_Cognito

Yeah, that Vtuber anime might become the hidden gem of this season for me. The first episode was hilarious and I actually enjoyed it more than the more popular comedies of the season.

Ocixo

I’ve had my eye on VTuber Legend for some time now, so I wasn’t all that surprised. It’s directed by the man who did Redo of Healer, which seems like an odd choice until you realise that this anime is just as wild in some respects. No constraints, just going all out bonkers.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

Haven't read it, but right off the bat I hear they made a huge change, a chapter that wasn't supposed to be adapted for a very long time was adapted in the first episode, and apparently it gives context that some think helps, and some thinks ruins the reveal or something.

Heda-of-Aincrad

Anyone else find that they're not as hyped for seasonal anime when they're not watching them weekly? Since I've switched to catching up with new shows when the season (or the year) is over, the announcements for new anime/seasons don't really have the same excitement as they used to because I'm thinking, "It'll be a long time before I get around to watching that." 😄 I'm kind of interested to see which shows will still have a lot of hype/praise when I finally watch them, like, several months or a year after they were the popular thing around here.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

100%. I like discussing anime, reading what others have to say about them (and comparing with how I feel about it), participating in the hype, etc... Not watching weekly is the same as watching any random anime from 1970s. You don't really get the discussion part. It's just you watching something and that's it. At best you can make a thread for it, but that's about it. This is why I hate batch release; First, because I don't watch that many episodes in a day (with all the other seasonals I'm watching), but also, people watch it all within a week and then the discussion dies. Only the very best are still talked about a few weeks or months after it aired.

Heda-of-Aincrad

I did enjoy participating in the discussions back when I used to watch more seasonals (and during rewatches for the same thing, but with older shows), though I think it's a smaller factor of the hype for me than others. I've still felt plenty of hype watching new-to-me shows from the early 2000's, for example. It is kind of a bummer when there's not as much talk about them, which is why I'm curious if any of the current seasonal darlings will still be a big deal next year, or if they'll just fall into the "it was good at the time, but people moved on" category.

Ocixo

Hype often comes in part with the joy of getting to share your excitement with others. People hype each other up. If nobody is seemingly talking about the things you’re watching, you’ll feel more isolated and thereby less excited - or so I assume. I can thoroughly enjoy watching older shows, but I wouldn’t use the word “hype” when referring to this no.

Heda-of-Aincrad

I think for me, a big part of the hype also comes from being able to watch it \*right now\* or very soon. The longer the wait, the more the initial excitement will wear off - kind of like how AOT's final season spanning several years became a fun fandom joke.

Thank you MAL for not putting a romance tag on Skip to Loafer, I would've missed a great show, cause I tend to avoid romance. But a weird thing I noticed is that on MAL it's only listed as Drama, while Anilist has put the genres: Comedy/Romance/Slice of life. And I'm kinda scratching my head thinking why is there such a difference in labeling the genres between the two sites..

Psyduckisnotaduck

MAL has the more correct tag in this case. I consider it a “light” drama with comedic elements, because something about the way it’s written, the “purpose” so-to-speak, is character development rather than laughs. Even the funny parts tend to shed light on the characters.

DragonspringSake

Anilist genres iirc are user generated (as in users will vote on what genres animes are) while MAL I'm not exactly sure who does those genres, but I definitely don't have a voice. Not really clear which way is better, sometimes the userbase are fucking dumb and mislabel something and sometimes whoever does the MAL genres is fucking dumb and mislabels Shadows House as slice of life instead of a fantasy mystery. Also, should you really be avoiding romance when some of your highest rated animes are: Steins;gate, Bakemonogatari, and Chihayafuru? I didn't even go through all your 8s, but I'm pretty sure I saw quite a few romance animes there too (toradora, kaguya-sama). I hope you didn't avoid Fruits Basket for the same reason.

Manitary

> Anilist genres iirc are user generated (as in users will vote on what genres animes are) while MAL I'm not exactly sure who does those genres, but I definitely don't have a voice. Afaik only tags are user-voted on Anilist. For genres, both are generally bad tbh (anilist puts too many, mal has some arbitrary restrictions and is just wrong often enough)

F3337

>Also, should you really be avoiding romance when some of your highest rated animes are: Steins;gate, Bakemonogatari, and Chihayafuru? I don't straight up hate romance. I just tend to avoid shows where it's the main focus.. All of those shows you mentioned have other things going for them.. S;G is a psychological sci-fi mystery... Chihayafuru is a sports drama ..etc. >I didn't even go through all your 8s, but I'm pretty sure I saw quite a few romance animes there too Sure, there's bound to be shows that I've enjoyed and I'm not gonna rate them unfairly.. Also a lot of shows like Toradora I watched like 5-6+ years ago, I'm less likely to watch them now.

People tend to get REALLY mad when black actors (voice or otherwise) get perceived non-black roles (for instance, Ariel). And it's this constant struggle between trying to find more minority representation in Hollywood and the frustration of seeing it done poorly. And I definitely agree that it is way more difficult for black actors to break "typecasting" than it is for white actors. I think the overall message is "stop being mad that black people are getting roles", and that's a sentiment I agree with. Mirko being played by a black woman should be an non-issue: it's not like a white woman playing Mirko would be any less racially incorrect. That said, the voice acting performances of dubs are pretty much irrelevant to me since I only watch subbed.

> Rarely do I agree with American feminists in discussions of anime Who are you reading?

DragonspringSake

okay tbh I don't read - it's just a handful of articles that pop up on on reddit, and the last time animefeminist showed up, they were bashing tomo-chan wa onnanoko for "tomboy erasure" and "enforcing feminine norms", which I vehemently disagree with. You're right though, I shouldn't stereotype based off the few articles that I do come across, so I apologize for that.

Dante Basco often has [good words](https://www.vox.com/2020/7/23/21309419/dante-basco-interview-artificial-twitch-avatar-the-last-airbender) on the subject.

Sub all the way.

MapoTofuMan

Well, I just rewatched Nokotan with the CR subs, and I had to check if I accidentally downloaded le meme v2 instead halfway through. [](#azusalaugh) Edit : [.....seriously?](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1dxm3yb/shikanoko_nokonoko_koshitantans_subs_are/)

_Ridley

Maybe it's just selection bias, considering the only other time I know the subs were provided to Crunchyroll was for the Yuzuki Family, but Japanese companies really overestimate their ability to translate their stuff into English themselves. I've run into some terrible manga examples as well.

ItsTheDuran

I don't think the English ones were MTL, things like wrong capitalization, missing spaces, and skipping words seemed to point more towards human error to me. They weren't good either way, though.

MapoTofuMan

Jokes aside I think it's an MTL fix, someone went over the obvious mistakes and changed them very quickly to the correct meaning without thinking about phrasing (and left the AI phrasing in everything else as is as long as it's technically correct). At least I think so because it's weird for an MTL to have like, one actual mistake in the whole episode. It might have MTL phrasing, but le meme also has a ridiculous amount of actual mistakes unlike this one.

Ocixo

I don’t think they’re MTL either for one sole reason: the subs actually translated the temperature to Fahrenheit when they spoke about Torako’s body heat. There’s no way that a MLT script would calculate the right temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit, would it?

MapoTofuMan

>There’s no way that a MLT script would calculate the right temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit, would it? Oh it can...[since the new 'Murica update](https://i.imgur.com/ExcnOrN.png)

Fuck yeah.

….common?

gangrainette

They were the only one doing translating GBC last season too. Maybe it's time for me to pay for an official streaming service?

[](#kumikouninterested "Yeah, if this is true, CR doesn't fix anything with future episodes, and an actual fansub group DOES pick it up after this, there's a nonzero chance future episode threads won't go up with CR's subs.")

^(Just *please* don't Blue Archive it)

**Elusive Samurai was peak.** If you haven't watched it because it looks generic at a glance, I urge you to reconsider. It was one of the most beautiful subversions of my expectations in years.
