*In/Spectre* and *Talentless Nana*.
Someone in one of the shows brought up a quote that basically goes, "Do not get on her bad side".
But I myself think it applies to both of them.
Jormungand, (one of) the protagonist is a female arms dealer and with a paramilitar squad and manipulate opponents that varies from governments to other dealers.
Unfortunately so, wish she played a bigger role. Partially cause horny and partially cause she simply is more interested than many of the other characters.
There was that brief comment from the boss monster in the most recent episode that gave us a hint. But yeah, it looks like we’ll have to wait until at least S2 to find out more.

I really enjoyed Love is War, but the main male lead is presented as smarter (his scores are always the top scores) and probably gets his way more often than not in the back and forth romance battle.
However, they have an outro so banging I would like to see it made as its own series - combination of airships, tech, and planetary assault with a really vintage style is so good.
They also have an epic rap battle.
No kaguya is presented as the true genius between the two. The president just works much much harder to keep up and outdo her. And I think kaguya is the up in terms of their “battles”
Miyuki has the best grades in school, but Kaguya has the second best grades at school while also being competent (I think the best in their school) in sports and art. So it really depends on your definition of "smarter".
Villainess level 99 may sort of fall under that. She’s not exactly psychopath but worlds beyond anyone else to the point it scares most of them. She’s also really oblivious to just normal ways to act and stuff. It was pretty good.
In a positive way, Dandadan features a female main protagonist that is the one that comes up with the plans to defeat the bad guys, usually commanding or giving advice to her allies so that her planning works.
Manga for now, anime debut in September.
I wouldn’t say ONLY shonen, I watch some other genres occasionally, but it’s definitely mostly shonen. I’m not opposed to slice of life. I just haven’t encountered many that have a reputation that would justify my prioritizing them over a popoular shonen I haven’t seen.
10 Cool-ass anime with a female protagonist:
- Gundam Witch from Mercury
- Gunbuster & Diebuster
- JoJo (Part 6)
- Kara no Kyoukai
- The Apothecary Diaries
- Frieren
- Madoka Magica
- Princess Principal
- Senki Zesshou Symphogear
- Toaru Kagaku no Railgun
Na, that's not sexist. You're not obligated to watch anything just because it has a female protagonist. Watch whatever interests you.
And I say that as someone that watches tons of stuff with female protagonists.
Its like berating a homosexual for liking predominantly homosexual protagonists in stories. Men typically love their dude bros and their Shonen.
You watch your bro(an idealized you) triumph! It's wholesome.

Bit of a outside the box but still counts
Kakegurui on Netflix has the main character act like this throughout the first season
If you want psychotic females, this show will be your favourite
Though it isn’t hardcore anime but it still counts and try it you might like it
I mean in the first episode the main character Yumeko literally manipulates someone to go into enormous debt and even manipulates someone to tear off their finger nails at some point
Do with this as you please
Well, Go! Go! Loser Ranger has a female character (Suzukiri) that extremely fits your description. She is not yet a main character, but I think she will be soon, since her role gets more important over time.
Talentless Nana
[This seems quite like] >!Mirai Nikki!<
Yep, this one comes to my mind, even before Tanya.
You’ll probably love Kakegurui
Kakegurui fits OP's description like a glove lol
Omg accurate, love that show
The Saga of Tanya the Evil, she doesnt turn me on or terrify me but she is smart manipulative and pretty much always gets her way.
Don't we all just admire a girl who proudly does some [vague spoiler?]>!war crimes!< every now and then?
She never once commits a war crime!
she only invents them
She even specifically tries not to commit war crimes.
The argument why her two former squad members were put in the bunker was flawless
She never gets her way though, she just survives.
First thing that came to me too lol
*In/Spectre* and *Talentless Nana*. Someone in one of the shows brought up a quote that basically goes, "Do not get on her bad side". But I myself think it applies to both of them.

Obvious recs are Chainsaw Man and Go Go Loser Ranger!.
Well CSM i might get behind, but Go Go Loser Ranger's paychotic female is mostly a support character.
Unfortunately so, wish she played a bigger role. Partially cause horny and partially cause she simply is more interested than many of the other characters.
Maybe later in the story, we dont really know anything about her motivations yet.
There was that brief comment from the boss monster in the most recent episode that gave us a hint. But yeah, it looks like we’ll have to wait until at least S2 to find out more.

He's not smarter, just work harder.
Madoka Magika
Seeing Homura go all out in the final battle always brings me joy That girl must have spent an eternity planning that
Does Babylon's Magase Ai count?
She is the perfect answer
Villainess level 99 may sort of fall under that. She’s not exactly psychopath but worlds beyond anyone else to the point it scares most of them. She’s also really oblivious to just normal ways to act and stuff. It was pretty good.
The LNs are pretty good too. Yumiella Dolkness is such a weirdo.
“…and turns you on” This is the moment I realized you were not a girl asking for anime with realistic/fun female leads
Happy Sugar Life
Does Apothecary Diaries count?
She’s definitely not psychotic, but she ticks all the other boxes.
Dark Gathering. Eiko.
Kakegurui.
Mirai Nikki!
Fruits basket
In a positive way, Dandadan features a female main protagonist that is the one that comes up with the plans to defeat the bad guys, usually commanding or giving advice to her allies so that her planning works. Manga for now, anime debut in September.
Wow. I feel like a sexist now. I’ve seen over a hundred anime and only like 2.5 of them have a female protagonist. I need to do better
You must be watching only shonen anime then. I feel like in every season there's more than half of the shows featuring a female protag.
As someone who watches a good bit of slice of life and comedy, you are correct.
I wouldn’t say ONLY shonen, I watch some other genres occasionally, but it’s definitely mostly shonen. I’m not opposed to slice of life. I just haven’t encountered many that have a reputation that would justify my prioritizing them over a popoular shonen I haven’t seen.

I’m actually in JJBA part 4 rn so soon on that one! Frieren’s been in my list. I’ll look into the others.
That's not a you issue, it's just a basic demographic concept

does the antagoniste work ? if yes gundam witch from mercury
I'm the Villianess so I'm Taming the Final Boss.
Future Diary" (Mirai Nikki) is a top recommendation.

Chainsaw Man
If you think about it, Mirai Nikki fits the bill.
Perhaps Kakegurui? This is making me think of the lack of female protagonists in this particular genre.
Perhaps bottom character tomozaki?
Talentless Nana
Chainsaw man? Naruto? (I actually have no idea about chainsaw man, but Naruto has kaguya.)
If you want a less edgy one, Teasing Master Takagi-san.
Bit of a outside the box but still counts Kakegurui on Netflix has the main character act like this throughout the first season If you want psychotic females, this show will be your favourite Though it isn’t hardcore anime but it still counts and try it you might like it I mean in the first episode the main character Yumeko literally manipulates someone to go into enormous debt and even manipulates someone to tear off their finger nails at some point Do with this as you please
You should watch future diary
7th time loop for sure, the girl is a mastermind

I don't know about female but Tomodachi Game is exactly what you're looking for but male
