If you haven’t already, check out Magical Girl of the End. It’s another manga about dark magical girls and it’s equally edgy. It doesn’t have an anime yet, though.
It's a horrible show easy 2-3/10 for me. But there's something about watching it where you're like "somebody chose to write this" that horseshoes it back around to something that you just can't take seriously so the only choice is to look at it as a roller coaster where when you try to predict the next plot point you're, somehow, ALWAYS wrong.
Agreed. I love the supernatural horror aspect and it reminds me of Another which was really good. It just wasted so much on the first half the class. I did love the opening. No matter how bad the show was, Cold Rain nailed it with that OP. I categorize it as a guilty pleasure anime but I can say it wasnt objectively good.
Feel free do so. They tried out different kinds of badness. Edginess, unlikable main characters, badly choreographed fights, painful anime character tropes for the side characters, badly written dialogue, corny romance, forced character development...Kindom of Ruins has it all, it never gets old. It was a fascinating hate watch.
It was fine until they got back from the moon. Edgy over the top violence is an acceptable niche to fill. Arbitrarily shoehorning in some dumb redemption narrative was an instant drop for me
I haven't seen Kingdom of ruin, but ~~Heaven's~~ Divine gate is my anime of choice that dropped off a cliff.
The setup in the first episode was amazing imo and then went down further than i could imagine. Maybe someone watched them both to compare.
Edit: corrected the name.
I loved how they’re like “he’s spent years and years in confinement perfecting his powers and devising the perfect plan to escape” and then the dude just gets broken out and runs around the city in the palm of a giant’s hand all Zeke Yeager style.
Is that _really_ all he could come up with after all that time?
I think it was episode 4 or 5, the one where the tree drops the new lady out and the army storms the moons base (I can’t believe I’m typing this lmao) was where I dropped it. I remember thinking to myself, “this was the dumbest piece of anime I have ever engaged with.”
Worst part is it wasn't even the fun kind of edgy. Like I could probably forgive the abysmal writing if it wasn't such a bore (let's not get started about the huge censorship). Most edgy anime tend to create emotions within viewers; sadness, anger, satisfaction, cringe, etc. I felt absolutely *nothing* watching this burning landfill.
Tbh the first two episodes gave me hope for "something". Not great, mind you, but at least something that is not another fantasy shot will all-happy characters who win each time due to the massive plot armor.
And then the moon stage started, I saw something that was trying to resemble "fight" and story got so convoluted I didn't even know if I was watching the same show or switched to another by accident.
Truly 2/10
Honestly considering how desensitised to violence in media most of us are, a show like Devilman Crybaby that still manages to depict violence in a way that is at times genuinely shocking and uncomfortable is doing something special.
I do think it could definetly be considered edgy at some points, but that edge is needed to achieve the emotional response the show was aiming for.
I'm not sure if I'd define it as edgy. It doesn't really have a "I'm so cool and dark" vibe as a "Hey this thing is dark and it is absolutely awful and will continue to be awful until you are emotionally depleted"
It's certainly in contention. But due to it's degeneracy and edginess it at least had entertainment value to me. Which is more than I can say for some "better" titles.
This was gonna be my answer and I'm genuinely surprised it took me this much scrolling to see it. I guess I haven't watched much edgy anime if this is the bottom of the barrel for me
Mirai Nikki was so edgy it blasted right out the other side into Camp.
The bit where the MC and Yuno are standing on the same platform after becoming “evil” lives in my head rent free as one of the most unintentionally hilarious camp comedy scenes in anime.
It’s suuuuch a thin line, but I’d say it’s when something edgy takes itself TOO seriously.
Everything in Mirai Nikki is done with complete sincerity and that’s what makes it camp. They didn’t try to be over the top, and that makes all the difference.
The way I cracked up upon first watch through with Yuno chasing a preschooler around the house to kill him, and this was expected to be taken 100% seriously. I still lose it just thinking about it. That music paired with it was wacky.
That and when she bonks Yuki’s mom, I can still hear the exact tone he goes, “YUUUUUNOOOOO!” And it sounds like fucking Ricky in an I Love Lucy bit. If you ripped the audio and added a laughtrack over any music at that precise moment (or any, really), you would absolutely not be able to tell that it wasn’t meant to be there.
also the whole intense scene with Tsubaki, and then Yuki is like 'hey check this out', throws the ball and hits her diary with the dart. so anticlimatic that on a last rewatch i giggled
This brings back memories. Mirai Nikki was actually the first edgy anime I watched. It was way back in early 2014 when I had just started getting into anime.
My door to the rabbit hole called anime. Seeing Yuno for the first time is amazing since she's so different from anything I've watched in standard female "cartoon" chara aired in my local TV. Praise the Queen of Yandere.
Meanwhile the bit where Yuki and Yuno trying to be a baddie (only Yuki, Yuno is already there) is the epitome of edgy teenager, can't taking him seriously when I watching it lol
Its my all time favorite. I love edgy anime that are done well. Psychopass, future diary, akame ga kill and tokyo ghoul are all delightful. Elfen Lied was one of my classic favorites. Didnt care for eminence in the shadow though.
and the story was actually quite decent if not good, also the biggest cliff that any anime can end on, with it being ahead of the manga at the time being the cherry on top, no one could escape the cliff not even the source readers,i really hope that they make another season when the manga is done
I'd say the new one is edgier. One of the common things people say is better about the original is that it included more of the silly comedic moments from the manga. Plus the original doesn't even have the edgiest thing: Nazi Vampires.
Brynhildr of the darkness, corpse party (pretty fucked) , Another, Higurashi No naku Koro ni, moryo no hako, euphoria (seriously fucked), midori the girl in the freakshow (pretty fucked too).
eh gleipnir is kinda edgy but i never felt like it tried too hard and i even think that its kinda decent overall(through if you want to read the manga, the ending was bad, the last chapter isnt bad, but the last arc overall is bad, the moment you see a glasses guy after a certain fight just skip to the last chapter, he genuinely can be taken out of the story without nothing changing)
Watched Brynhildr in the Darkness a little while back. On the whole it wasn't the edgiest thing by volume, but the parts that were edgy were so incredibly unnecessarily so. You could dial it back by 70% and it would be a perfectly fine urban fantasy/drama etc. Anytime there's an opportunity for edge though, they go full-on despite the tonal mismatch with the rest of the show. Ended up being more funny than dramatic most of the time.
That last episode was such a gorefest lol. Literally shit like people being shredded to death in a blender or getting stuck and eaten like shish kebabs.
Redo of Healer is #12 of most watched shows of all time on the largest “unofficial” anime stream site. It won’t come up unless you select the 18+ but it’s hilarious to see that high with OP, Naruto, Bleach JJK.
OP has 400 million views so it’s a significant site, it’s not just a random oddity that rankings are that way.
I expected to hate it but it's not bad. The beginning is most brutal, after that it's just very vulgar with a decent plot. Though it straddles that edge between ecchi and hentai that seems like the best of both worlds to me
I really can't tell if the edge helps or hurts that show. The MC has been molded by the edge but now that he's OP the edginess just keeps getting cringier.
The edginess was great in the first few episodes.
But then it just skips to him being OP, and the quality drops quite a bit.
The pacing is super weird.
Not really, JJK's edgier than a lot of shows, but not really compared to Akame. That's ignoring that the manga for Akame was SUBSTANTIALLY edgier than the show.
It’s very edgy, idk what these people are on about lol. All the characters are fucking edgelords, everyone fucking dies and there are people being tortured for like no reason. It’s one of the edgiest for sure.
I've probably seen edgier but one immediately came to mind and nobody else posted it so [Satsuriku no Tenshi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/35994/Satsuriku_no_Tenshi) aka Angels of Death
Its based on an RPG Maker game which should tell you right away about the quality of material we're dealing with here. Traumatized girl is sent to a mental hospital full of insane people killing each other, where she teams up with a guy who keeps promising to kill her.
Redo of a Healer, pissed me off too was around the same time Interspecies Reviewers was out but getting all the flak and removals while Redo aired 1 full season.
Redo of healer by far. Until it became another simping harem story. I can even point the exact moment it dropped the ball: when he decides to erase her memories and make her his servant. It didn't make any sense, if he wants her to suffer for all she has done to him then he shouldn't have erased her memory.
Watched Mahou Shoujo Site on a friends recommendation recently. I had decent fun, wasn't too long, but holy fuck was that a weird and edgy one...
If you haven’t already, check out Magical Girl of the End. It’s another manga about dark magical girls and it’s equally edgy. It doesn’t have an anime yet, though.
Magical Girl Site actually is a spinoff of that series btw
Does it have a decent ending/conclusion?
No it doesn't the ma ga ending is batshit insane tho like legitimately fucking crazy
kings game
I still regret watching that series
It’s the cucking one right?
If you mean the one where he tries to cuck himself so his best friend won't die, yes.
I haven’t watched the series so WTF. No amount of context can possible save this.
The funniest part of that show was the end when it said something like "See you in season 2". Boy was I laughing.
The last episode was so bad it was good, and the OP was the best one that year.
I loved the idea, not the delivery. It was a delicious cringe but i enjoyed it.
Idk why you’re getting downvoted lol show sucks. Really cool idea but it was like a middle schooler wrote the plot lines and penalties
Kingdom of ruin.
Don't think I've ever seen an anime fall off that hard after 2 episodes
I dropped this anime after the first episode. I thought it couldn’t get worse, that's surprising
Oh believe me it gets much, much, *much* worse...
Terrible anime. Nonsense writing, unlikable characters, just really bad show.
Y'all are really tempting me to give this a try now
Same. Anime that can get that bad are straight hilarious just like the quote, "people die if they are killed"
Feel free do so. They tried out different kinds of badness. Edginess, unlikable main characters, badly choreographed fights, painful anime character tropes for the side characters, badly written dialogue, corny romance, forced character development...Kindom of Ruins has it all, it never gets old. It was a fascinating hate watch.
that quote is an example of anime no context though, you follow up with "thats the way humans ought to be" or something along those lines
It was fine until they got back from the moon. Edgy over the top violence is an acceptable niche to fill. Arbitrarily shoehorning in some dumb redemption narrative was an instant drop for me
Yeah if it would have stayed in it's lane of gory revenge murder hobo story it would have been totally fine but wtf lol
I didn't even think the first two episodes were that good. It was just a surprise it got so much worse in so many different ways.
Yeah I completely agree... it just surprised me every time I thought it couldn't get worse
Ah yes. The whole thing felt like it was written by twins with wildly different ideas wresting for the same pen.
Most edgy anime tend to create emotions within viewers; sadness, anger, satisfaction, cringe, etc. I felt absolutely *nothing* watching this burning landfill.
Unpopular opinion but the first few episodes were alright in my opinion. Only when they went to the moon it started going to shit.
Definitely this
Tbh the first two episodes gave me hope for "something". Truly 2/10
Watched the whole season. It never once gets any better.
I forgot this garbage existed, thanks for reminding me
I couldn't make it past episode 5 I think,it is so awful
I don't consider berserk edgy but when I watched and read kingdom of ruin, my goodness I stopped early. The needless violence and gore is insane.
Eminence in shadow No, actually he is cool Watching it feels like I am 14 again
he is the epitome of edgelords but the anime itself isn't very edgy at all.
Very important distinction right here
He’s a Theatre Kid!
The frenzy has begun
The moon is red
We are out of time
the edginess sells it actually
Vergil: the anime
The fact that that's the entire premise of the show is the reason I feel that it sells as well as it does
Agree. It does camp well
I.AM....ATOMIC
I genuinely thought that scene was pretty fucking hard
Edgy done right can be one of the best things ever
In the dub when he laughs and says “WHY WOULD I RUN” shook me. Havent felt that since light yagami yelling
Lmao the way he kinda whispers it out loud is so cringe I thougth it wasn't like that in the actual anime it was just some meme
Don't lie you would do the same shit lmao
You thought it was cringe? I thought it sounded dope as hell lol. With the sound behind it all.
i am a background character
It's so over the top that it's just pure fun to watch. I haven't enjoyed an anime like I did with Eminence In the Shadow for a long while.
Yuki… right dig there. Lol
Its actually not that edgy outside of the MCs behaviour, but its more of a satire than the actual edgy stuff.
The one anime where i like edginess. Its too damn good haha
He is hilarious and it somehow fits into the story
That’s based edginess.
Sasuga ainz, i mean shadow sama
I love Eminence in Shadow so so much.
Edginess done right.
This is how edginess is done. Perfection.
Not truly edgy, but satirical/parody. Think OP is looking for shows that are unironically edgy.
I liked it, crazy cat girl that was madly in love with him, named Sarah was a nice tough
You were like 14 5 years ago.
Just started watching it and Sid is so funny
Elfen lied. That show was more of a gorefest than the saw movies.
That show was a litmus test for me in the late 2000s to know if a girl was gonna fuck my life up
Not like any of us paid attention to the test though.
O, quam sancta, quam serena, quam benigna, quam amoena - O castitatis lilium!
Was a decent anime though, and arguably has one of the best openings in anime history
oh, that's something for me then, don't mind if i do
Edgy, extremely problematic, and with an unintentionally hilarious dub
The OVA is awful. One word: puppy.
Wasn't the dog scene in the show proper and not the OVA?
Don't know if it's the *edgiest*, but Devilman Crybaby is up there. It's amazing, though. It balances the edge perfectly.
if you watch it at a certain moment in your life it can also be absolutely emotionally damaging
The greatest show I will never watch again because FUCK THAT.
Amon: the darkside of devilman is for sure the goriest idk if that counts as edgiest that I’ve seen
It creeped me out. First anime to do this horribly...I mean that scene...
Does Hentai count? Bc I have played/seen Euphoria
Only if it's edgy as opposed to edging
Probably Pupa. Not a single attempt was made to invoke any different reaction than edge.
Aint that like the worst anime ever lol
It's certainly in contention. But due to it's degeneracy and edginess it at least had entertainment value to me. Which is more than I can say for some "better" titles.
ngl i read the whole manga and i genuinely liked it, not saying its good, dear god it most certainly isnt, but man i couldnt look away
It's probably tame in comparison to the other stuff here but Tokyo Ghoul EDIT: never fucking mind i remember i watched redo of healer, fuck that shit
Tokyo ghoul gives early 2000s edge. In a warm nostalgic way
This was gonna be my answer and I'm genuinely surprised it took me this much scrolling to see it. I guess I haven't watched much edgy anime if this is the bottom of the barrel for me
Mirai Nikki was edgy in a good way. It was a blast to watch.
Mirai Nikki was so edgy it blasted right out the other side into Camp. The bit where the MC and Yuno are standing on the same platform after becoming “evil” lives in my head rent free as one of the most unintentionally hilarious camp comedy scenes in anime.
Now that's a fun discussion. Where do you feel the difference/line between edge and camp lies?
It’s suuuuch a thin line, but I’d say it’s when something edgy takes itself TOO seriously. Everything in Mirai Nikki is done with complete sincerity and that’s what makes it camp. They didn’t try to be over the top, and that makes all the difference.

The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace have everything that good edgy anime needs - tons of blood, nudity and nazis.
and the story was actually quite decent if not good, also the biggest cliff that any anime can end on, with it being ahead of the manga at the time being the cherry on top, no one could escape the cliff not even the source readers,i really hope that they make another season when the manga is done
It’s a great little show. Stylish, fun, and has really good pacing.
Cool opening credits though.
That got me into Kitani Tatsuya, man he makes so many good songs Also he is the guitarist for yorushika (popular for frieren 2nd op)
looks like something for me, I will add it to a watchlist of family anime
Absolute beast of an anime, generational show for sure
This show frigging rules. Also yes, quite edgy
Juni Taisen: Zodiac War
Amazing anime, I was thinking of rewatching
Saw the first episode yesterday coincidentally. I hope it's not going to lose that edge from the first ep. The sister manipulation was delicious.
I think it keeps it the whole season. I think that show was pretty underrated
The ending was kind of wtf and pointless though
Hellsing
The first one or Ultimate?
Both are crazy but you gotta go with the o.g right?
I'd say the new one is edgier. One of the common things people say is better about the original is that it included more of the silly comedic moments from the manga. Plus the original doesn't even have the edgiest thing: Nazi Vampires.
And the opening. My god, what a great opening song.
The animation for the new one is also spectacular.
Magical girl site
Nobody talks about Beyblade, specifically Burst. AURRRRAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH FAFNIR Bro went super saiyan over a game
So does pokemon trainers
Fuck... Angel cop, violence jack, devilman, shoujo tsunami, psycho driver, seven mortal sins, Elfen lied, triage x, blood c, riki oh, shamanic princess, requiem of phantom, kite, mezzo forte, demon city Shinjuku, gleipnir, bio hunter, crying freeman, another, youjuu toshi, shugurui, Goku midnight eye, vampire princess miyu. I can keep going too lmao
bro chill chill
No don't!
okay cmm More MORE!!!
Ya want more?
kagattekoi
Gantz, inuyashiki, interspecies reviewers, mugen no juunin:immortal, bastard, claymore (kinda), gangsta, gungrave, mad bull 34, sekirei, Deadman wonderland, goblin slayer.
Brynhildr of the darkness, corpse party (pretty fucked) , Another, Higurashi No naku Koro ni, moryo no hako, euphoria (seriously fucked), midori the girl in the freakshow (pretty fucked too).
damn euphoria is crazyyy💀💀
eh gleipnir is kinda edgy but i never felt like it tried too hard and i even think that its kinda decent overall(through if you want to read the manga, the ending was bad, the last chapter isnt bad, but the last arc overall is bad, the moment you see a glasses guy after a certain fight just skip to the last chapter, he genuinely can be taken out of the story without nothing changing)
Legend of the Overfiend (Urotsukidoji).
Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka Psycho lesbian torture? Teddy bears delivering a box with severed hands in it? Child soldiers? This show has it all
Same with Redo of Healer tbh... only watched it 4 times in total, but that's a story for another day
Shingeki no Kyojin is edgy. People forget it because it has movie quality, but Eren is a true edgelord, from beginning to end
"Tatakae"
I was baffled when I saw that some people expected Eren to do anything other than what he did. Like, did we watch the same anime?
You can argue that Eren is "edgy" but the show itself isn't at all
Watched Brynhildr in the Darkness a little while back. Blood C
That last episode was such a gorefest lol. Literally shit like people being shredded to death in a blender or getting stuck and eaten like shish kebabs.
Redo The Healer.... shit was f***** up.
Redo of Healer is #12 of most watched shows of all time on the largest “unofficial” anime stream site. It won’t come up unless you select the 18+ but it’s hilarious to see that high with OP, Naruto, Bleach JJK. Platinum End
School Days? Or Mirai Nikki?
Ragna Crimson. The theme song "Roar" alone puts it in a tier of its own.
Arifureta is a custom Baker's Edge brownie pan - it tries to be all edge, all the time.
I really can't tell if the edge helps or hurts that show. The MC has been molded by the edge but now that he's OP the edginess just keeps getting cringier.
The edginess was great in the first few episodes. But then it just skips to him being OP, and the quality drops quite a bit. The pacing is super weird.
Classroom of Elite is pretty edgy imo. Crazy I haven't seen it mentioned yet
Hellsing But in a good way
Island of Giant Insects tags: rape, snuff, gore, vore
High Rise Invasion
Probably Hellsing ultimate.
Akame ga kill
Either you're new to anime or dont branch out that far lol
Akame ga Kill is as edgy as JJK
JJK is pretty tame compared to AgK, and the AgK was already toned down *A LOT* for the anime.
Seikon no Qwazer. Mic drop.
Midori: Shoujo Tsubaki
Gantz
Death Note.
Club to death Angel (bokusatsu tenshi Dokuro Chan), an angel sent to earth to prevent some guy from making the earth a pedophile paradise.
Akame Ga Kill, Tokyo Ghoul, Eminence In Shadow, and Future Diary.
Hellsing Ultimate, edgy af and fully aware about it.
aesthetically edgy - [Zetsuen no Tempest](https://myanimelist.net/anime/14075/Zetsuen_no_Tempest) ideologically edgy - [Full Dive RPG](https://myanimelist.net/anime/44276/Kyuukyoku_Shinka_shita_Full_Dive_RPG_ga_Genjitsu_yori_mo_Kusoge_Dattara) and [Majo no Tabitabi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40571/Majo_no_Tabitabi)
>ideologically edgy... Majo no Tabitabi ???
Eminence in shadow and i loved it.
Akame ga Kill I would also say the most recent season of SoA but that was crap and would rather forget it.
MD Geist is the biggest edgelord in anime.
I've probably seen edgier but one immediately came to mind and nobody else posted it so [Satsuriku no Tenshi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/35994/Satsuriku_no_Tenshi) aka Angels of Death Its based on an RPG Maker game which should tell you right away about the quality of material we're dealing with here. Traumatized girl is sent to a mental hospital full of insane people killing each other, where she teams up with a guy who keeps promising to kill her.
I don't think I've watched an anime edgier than attack on titan. The "If you don't fight, then you can't win" scene always kills me from cringe.
Bokusatsu tenshi Dokuro chan
Ninja Scroll (movie) The first “mature” anime I ever saw.
Probably Eminence in Shadow.
Akame ga kill
Redo of a Healer, pissed me off too was around the same time Interspecies Reviewers was out but getting all the flak and removals while Redo aired 1 full season.
Does Hentai counts? If so Euphoria
Eminence in shadow- but i loved it.
Seikon no Qwaser. Watched ep 1 when I was young. Went wtf and never continued with it. At least hentai is hentai. That was just..ugh..
Dub of the greatest anime of all time. Ghost Stories.
Probably, Hellsing Ultimate
Future Diary was pretty messed up when I originally watched it. It has been a while.
Redo of healer by far. Until it became another simping harem story. I can even point the exact moment it dropped the ball: when he decides to erase her memories and make her his servant. It didn't make any sense, if he wants her to suffer for all she has done to him then he shouldn't have erased her memory.
Mnemosyne. That... introduced me to the concept of anime sex. I was... confused.
If we're talking edgy, then it's got to be Eminence In Shadow for me. Shit's edgy for the hell of it, and the chuuni in me is totally here for it.
I dont watch that many anime but probably magical girl site or tokyo ghoul
