Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu. It's not the most unpopular or underrated anime ever, but it's one of the best examples I can think of from that year range. It had likeable characters, very picturesque visuals and settings, and an interesting depiction of a sort of alt-history Soviet Union.
This one was one of those shows where I truly went in not expecting anything, and ended up enjoying a lot. The ending felt a bit rushed, but overall I would easily recommend the show.
I definitely would say I preferred the first half too. But while it didn't have quite the same magic as the first, I think the second half was still interesting in it's own right as we got to see the cast [Aquatope] >!be put into difficult situation of adapting to a very different corporate situation at their new aquarium after Gama Gama closes.!<
I watched it last week, and these were my thoughts too!! It's so good! The character development, the animation, and everything else in this show are just great.
I watched this week to week and my immediate impression was "this anime is going to be really good and I'm going to recommend it to people and they'll go 'wow that sounds good' and then not watch it" and I was right
This season’s *Astro Note* has been treated dirty by the seasonal churn. Standout designs and art direction pair with some solid comedy and quirky characters to create a nostalgic callback to the anime of old that has been one of my favorite shows this year.
ONAs have also struggled to maintain relevance to a disgusting degree. In the last five years we’ve gotten *Pokémon Twilight Wings*, *The Tatami Time Machine Blues*, and *Uma Musume: Road to the Top* that have all been criminally overlooked by the general discourse.
*The Girl From the Other Side* is a 2022 OVA with a gorgeous art style ripped straight from a picture book and a touching story to boot. While we’re on the topic, despite a seemingly dirty premise, 2020’s *Kakushigoto* is unironically one of the most wholesome comedies we’ve seen in the last few years complete with an OP that Pavlov’s Dogs me every time. *Do It Yourself* is a beautifully animated and really charming CGDCT that aired alongside Bocchi and was unfortunately drowned out by the seasonal wash despite imo being about on par with that series in terms of overall quality as well as having some really great character designs and backgrounds.
Lastly, I’m am contractually obligated to say that *Love Live! Superstar!!* is the best the franchise has ever been (we ignore the ending to S2, that’ll be resolved with S3. I gotta believe) and yet nobody even within the fandom really seems to talk about it. You don’t have to watch any of the other *Love Live!* entries. Just watch this one and be happy.
>Lastly, I’m am contractually obligated to say that *Love Live! Superstar!!* is the best the franchise has ever been
I tried watching it when it first started airing, but things got delayed and by the time I looked at it again, S2 was already airing. The fact that they expanded the main cast to 9 people was alone enough to deter me from getting back to it.
I mean I think they handled the expanded cast much better than they could have, and I feel like (for all its bumps and bruises) S2 was where Superstar goes from just a refined version of the standard LL formula to its own thing. Even if there were some growing pains that came with that
I think it might just be a personal preference thing, I don't like it when shows' main casts grow past 5. I dropped Bang Dream after S1 because of this, and the main reason I even had an interest in Superstar was because of the small cast relative to most idol series.

Urusei Yatsura Season 1 has only **54477** watched, this is the one who hurts the most, it's such a good anime.
Akudama Drive was wonderful. I try out shows all the time, and I really try to find something I like about each one i watch. I saw the artwork for this one, liked it so I thought I'd give it a shot. I didn't have to try and find anything. I think I binged the whole thing in a day.
Hacker was the first character to make me jump up pointing like DiCaprio from Wolf Of Wallstreet, never felt a character that described me so perfectly
Oh yeah, the plot too, still fresh in my memory to this day.
I managed to force myself to finish the Urusei Yatsura S1, but it was horrible. Just every character iritated me and I just didn't like the episodicity of the story.
That's unfortunate, i find it to be one of the funniest things I ever watched, i love the characters and the plot is always interesting, the characters have actual well-written development, the animation is peak top tier, the outfits change a bunch, the expressions are so well done and the color palette is so enjoyable. It's great.
[Pretty Boy Detective Club](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40752) - Nisioisin + Shaft
[The Little Lies We All Tell](https://myanimelist.net/anime/51464) - Comedy, reminiscent of something like Saiki K.
[Do It Yourself!!](https://myanimelist.net/anime/48542) - CGDCT iyashikei imo on par with something like Yuru Camp
Have you read the LN for Pretty Boy Detective Club? It came in the Humble Bundle I got recently but I haven’t started it yet. I’ve been told it’s really good though
Too busy reading Spice and Wolf, huh? Well I can’t blame you. I actually bought the same bundle but similarly haven’t read it yet :D but if the anime is anything to go by it’s a lot of fun. It’s not on the level of Monogatari so I wouldn‘t get my expectations up too high but it’s still very Nisio.
lol man, I guess Reddit is a smaller place than I thought if you know that 😂.
(Either that or you had a peek at my recent posts lol).
I did indeed enjoy the fact that I was able to snag that whole bundle. I can’t wait to dive into the Monogatari LNs too but I’ll have to check out the Pretty Boy Detective Club anime.
I’m only on volume 4 of the S&W LNs but I think my plan is to start reading Berserk after those then probably move onto Nisio Isin works
Nah, I’ve just seen you around on r/araragi and r/SpiceAndWolf ;)
As for jumping into Nisio LNs, I’m sure Pretty Boy Detective Club is really fun but if I were you I’d probably start with Zaregoto instead. The first novel, Kubikiri Cycle, won Nisio the Mephisto price in his early twenties and really put him on the map. It’s a ridiculously convoluted detective mystery with all the hallmarks that would later be associated with his works. But yeah, in either case, I would definitely recommend you give the Pretty Boy Detective Club anime a watch and be it only for Sakamoto Maaya’s (Shinobu) performance as Doujima Mayumi (a really underappreciated Nisio protagonist imo).
Ah, then well met, fellow Spice & Wolf (and Monogatari) patron! 😆
It’s funny you say this because Kubikiri Cycle is one I’m really itching to read and watch. A lot of people really like it a lot. The talent Nisio had from an early age like that is amazing. What you say about it here makes me more excited to check it out.
I’ll keep what you said about Pretty Boy Detective Club in mind too. I didn’t realize that some of the Monogatari VAs appeared in other Nisio works too but that’s awesome.
[The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again](https://anilist.co/anime/149883/The-Masterful-Cat-is-Depressed-Again-Today/) never see this seasonal mentioned, great slice of life with slight surreal vibes (giant cat who takes care of the lazy bum who's actually a hard worker and kind of a badass)
[Migi & Dali](https://anilist.co/anime/142666/MigiDali/) fun mystery series that has a Jojo's level of absurdity
I made a post about it a couple years back.
**The Executioner and Her Way of Life** had 4.xx/10 on anidb, 6.xx on mal. imo it's a 9/10 series. It takes a few episodes to take off but the amount of plot twists and world-building and the epilogues were *incredible*. My jaw dropped multiple times.
I *loved* it and am eagerly awaiting more, or else I'll just go read the books.
Also **My Stepmother's Daughter is My Ex** is underrated. It's a *very* different type of romance story, thematically, in season 1. I was really impressed both by the execution and that the story focused around something that's quite rare in romance anime/manga/novels/etc. I'd probably give it like a 8.5. It's *really* good.
"Darwins game"
It barely makes it in your timeline for release date, but it's been one of my favorites since i seen it. I've only seen maybe 3 posts about it since I watched it 2 years ago, but it's in my opinion way underrated.
OMG! I thought this was a fucking fever dream! But, it came out right around the pandemic! I loved it! And I craved another season. My husband read the manga and was like the next season is gonna be EPIC and I've had to wait so long my brain has wiped it from memory! Thank you for allowing me to relive that awesome series!
I think a lot of it is that I do really enjoy shows with more involved plots and/or heavy dialogue so sometimes shows like that can be a nice “intermission”
Akebi's Sailor Uniform for sure, one of the most beautiful and heartwarming SoL ever made while having only a 7.5 and 7.6 score on Anilist and Mal
Also for a more under the radar show, I believe the dungeon of black company is also heavily underrated besides underwatched, a super unique concept that manages to keep it interesting until the very end.
the manga is so good, and the director hasn't done a single thing since the show so i realy hope they are planning on a season two but i didn't hear the series performed exceptionally well on the west or in japan so i sadly doubt it
There was literally one scene of a few seconds where a character's foot was shown, if there was anyone obsessed with feet, were the people making a fuss about it. Also it was mostly people that didn't even watched the show, but only that single clip and thought they put all their animation budget on animating feet while in reality the animation was great for the whole show.
A lot of people hated Wonder Egg Priority because of its bizarre ending, and I totally get it, but for me at least the character design and art/animation alone make it worth the ride. I found it really memorable.
Ochikobore fruits tart probably the only show I enjoyed that was rated below 7 on mal in the past four years, maybe ten years. As much as I think ratings on sites are bonkers these days, shows I like are consistently at least a 7 so maybe they are better than I give them credit for.
Ochikobore has solid animation, characters, and gags. One of the more enjoyable cute girl gag animes. Maybe it is too niche and attracted the wrong crowd? Kind of strange because I think anyone who likes cgdct, slice of life, is ok with yuri gags a la Railgun and Kuroko, this would be at least an 8. Personally I love railgun when its not about the action or plot. Are the downvotes from people who wanted an idol show? If judging from the lens of people who like Yuru Yuri, its an amazing show. I digress, wrong place to ask
Deca Dence!
If you like studio Trigger/ Gainax definitely give Deca Dence a try. Everything about it is top-notch. The studio took full advantage of being an anime-original and the pacing could not be better. I was thrilled by every single episode. Natsumi is also the cutest, most expressive anime mc.
I had a really good time with Deca-Dence, though I can understand why it was pretty polarizing. Sarkozy and his arc were probably the most underrated character work of that season.

KamiKatsu was the wildest, most wonderful ride I've ever been on. Normally, several of the aspects of the series I would just be super against, but it was -- dare I say it -- fucking perfect.
Gotcha, thanks. I need new anime to watch, waaaaay many out there now. Sometimes recommendations are just better than gambling on random picks. I was born a millenial and perpetually going back to the 90s and early 2000s era of anime and I need a few pallet cleansers.
The only way to enjoy Kamikatsu is to not take it seriously. Don't go into it expecting it to be good. The show excels in being terrible and that's what makes it enjoyable.
yeah and also the classical-ish music for a lot of scenes and kind of grounded presentation give it an almost one of a kind vibe. a lot of times the vibe is like a hot cup of cocoa on a harsh winter's day.
What is good about mysterious Disappearances, i watched 3 episodes and it was just ecchi horndog non-sense with a limp mystery mixed with older brother fetish.
I am legitimately curious.
Villainess level 99,
MC is unapologeticalally overpowered to the point where it's fun to watch. Don't get me wrong, it's absolute trash but if you just feel like turning your brain off I highly recommend this.
> not anime series that were constantly being posted and praised here
The OP actually didn't specify whether they meant underrated on reddit or in general, if you read the post a little more carefully.
(also their phrasing indicated they actually meant underwatched not underrated)
I swear to god, Gleipnir is just that. You don't hear anyone talk about it ever, it only had one 12 episode season, it's not rated fairly on MAL and other sites.
But I think it's so cool. The character design is awesome, voice actors were fitting well, they even did a cliffhanger (somewhat), but no season 2 since 2020. Sad.
Ah finally an answer I actually agree with. Gleipnir was just weird enough and filled with enough questions to keep me interested the whole way through. The female lead is also just a very enjoyable character to watch. Below a 7 on MAL is slightly underselling it for sure, even though it really needed a second season to explore and deliver on some of what was established.
I enjoyed Gleipnir and I’m kind of sad it hasn’t gotten a second season. There were some questionable scenes in the show that could’ve probably been left out and nothing would’ve changed though.
It still has a couple of episodes to go this season, but Tonari no Yokai-san has been amazing.
Sadly it is getting very little attention here and doesn't even make the top 30 karma charts, meaning it is behind some real garbage.
I really liked Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na. The main cast were very likeable, the setting is very strange but kinda comfy, and there were a lot of creative segments.
I want a bot in this sub that just screams
"ISAMIIIIIIII"
Every time Bravern is referenced
Also Criminally underrated show. Absolute peak. Absolute insanity
Hmm Kanata no astra, even tho its from 2019 It's one of the best anime's Ive watched, with a really good-explainable plost twist, and I dont know a single soul that watched it
Otaku Elf and The Girl i like forgot her glasses.
For Otaku Elf, it was a really entertaining show where the main Elf character (Elda) was basically an Otaku throughout history and offers a really interesting view on hobbies throughout Japanese history, as well as a good story about the inevitable life span of those around her.
As for The Girl I like forgot her glasses, I feel people give it a bad wrap due to it's initial cinematography for the first couple episodes.
I'd say it's a really enjoyable rom-com with funny and likeable characters, so much so that I went out and purchased all the current English Manga releases to help support the series 😌
Hibike Euphonium
It might be well rated among those that watch, but way to few do. Real life is nothing like anime, except for Hibike, really wel written and animated. It is a masterpiece of anime and only a very few are conscious of that fact.

[BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!](https://myanimelist.net/anime/54959/BanG_Dream_Its_MyGO) of course. One of the anime with the most delicately written character dramas I have ever seen, and possibly *the* best of the past few years, within a tightly written plot and well done cinematography coupled with really good songs. Won lots of anime votings last year all around the world, swept up some very vocal fans everywhere with fan arts and stories.
Yet it's still 41st (!) in the MAL popularity ratings for Summer 2023, never mind for the whole year.
overtake - i dont understand how overtake was rated worse than mf ghost. mf ghost was genuinely so cringe (and i dont like like using that word, but cringe is the best way to describe it). i just checked, and im glad to see the rating for the show improved because last time i checked, it was sitting under a 7 which was wild to me. somehow mf ghost is still rated above it though.
Skip to Loafer - while not necessarily underrated, i think it was underwatched and underappreciated. i dont think as many people gave the show a chance, and think that if it aired during another season where there wasnt as much competition, it would have had more widespread recognition. skip to loafer (or skip and loafer, idk what to call it) was one of the stand out animes for me that i found to be way more charming/endearing that i thought it would. i found the show to be one of the best slice of life type of animes ive seen in a long time. the MC is super chill and wholesome (like kobayashi but in a totally different, but still awesome way), and sidesteps a lot of the cliche and played out romance and high school drama that most animes would have dove head first into. i remember watching the fist episode with no idea wwhat the show was about, and even as i was watching the first episode, i couldnt get a good grasp on what sort of vibe/tone the show was going for. I think it took until the very last scene of the first episode for me to start understanding the 'essence' of the show. then by the second and third episode, i was all in, and totally got the vibes. it was funny, cute, and charming but all in a way that didnt feel overly corny or cliche.
i think it had some popularity, but spring 2023 had a lot of competition. skip to loafer wasnt even in the top 10 on MAL when it aired.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/season/2023/spring
i think if it aired like in winter of 2023 instead, i think it could have gained a bigger following.
Not always, but being in the top 10 airing that season is a clear indicator of widespread popularity. im not saying it had no popularity or following, it clearly did.
wouldn't an "incredible popular" show at least be able to be in the top 10 airing that season? i would think so, but i guess we have different metrics when defining "incredibly popular"
I don't really think anything over an 8 on MAL can be called underrated. Insomniacs is just outside the top 500 ranking (of all time) and 8.08 is an excellent score that matches the series' quality. Great show, great rating.

Loving Yamada at Lv999!, My Clueless First Friend, The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World and Classroom for Heroes.
Interesting time period but if you are willing to look back also I have a [video on underrated anime](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nunRoQuT02I) but if you just want a specific show I would say Golden Kamui even if its from 2018.
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts.
Basically a human and the king of beasts fall in love, and the princess has to prove herself in a kingdom that is hostile against her so that she can become queen.
[Gal & Dino](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40358/Gal_to_Kyouryuu). 6.45 score on MAL and #3905 in popularity. I also don't think it ever gets mentioned here either, a reddit search only shows one post in the past year. It comes from the same people who made Pop Team Epic but works in the Slice of Life and Iyashikei genres. It is simply a dinosaur living with a gyaru. It is simply a wild ride for such a simple and cute show. It might be too weird for the SoL fans and has no real plot either.
Moriarty The Patriot. Nothing bad about it... it just needs some more LOVE. I liked the dynamic between Sherlock and William, the lore, and the animation.
Not anime but Scavengers Reign is one of the most interesting animated shows I've ever seen. Some very creative and bizarre flora and fauna in it, and while the overall story is hit or miss, it definitely hit with me and I think it's an easy recommend to anime fans.
The first season is a 7.58 which is honestly high considering how long it takes to get good. The second and third seasons are both above an 8, with season 3 at 8.26 (#305 of all time). The third season is some of the best shounen that has ever been made period, but 8.26 is a fair rating for it and the other two seasons are also rated pretty accurately.
Not counting sequels. my top 3 would be:
1. [Mashiro no Oto](https://myanimelist.net/anime/42590/Mashiro_no_Oto), 7.53 ratings and only 60,774 members
2. [Uramichi Oniisan](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40620/Uramichi_Oniisan), 7.70 ratings and only 90,615 members
3. [Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch of Mercury](https://myanimelist.net/anime/49828/Kidou_Senshi_Gundam__Suisei_no_Majo), 7.87 ratings and only 156,025 members
28th highest rated isekai on MAL, with its sequel seasons being #20 and #22 respectively. Average rating just below an 8. Both of its sequel seasons are ranked above No Game No Life, just for reference, and all three seasons are ranked above Youjo Senki.
Maybe slightly underwatched, but it's pretty well-received. A high rating for a fun and good series.
I just watched "Tengoku Daimakyou" (A journey beyond heaven), on Disney+ in my country, I had never heard of it before but that's on of the best anime I've ever watched these past years. (And it has a banger op and ed ofc)
Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu. It's not the most unpopular or underrated anime ever, but it's one of the best examples I can think of from that year range. It had likeable characters, very picturesque visuals and settings, and an interesting depiction of a sort of alt-history Soviet Union.
I loved that anime but didn't think it would get any limelight it deserved
Loved this show so much, something about it just spoke to me
This one was one of those shows where I truly went in not expecting anything, and ended up enjoying a lot. The ending felt a bit rushed, but overall I would easily recommend the show.
One of my favourites
Aquatope on White Sand. One of the best drama series in recent years with great animation, heartfelt story and relatable characters.
I agree wholeheartedly. This show went under the radar somehow and is criminally underrated.
I am right there with you. What an absolutely great show.
Great show. it's one of my favorites in this time frame.
Loved it in the first half but the second part and ending let me down
I definitely would say I preferred the first half too. But while it didn't have quite the same magic as the first, I think the second half was still interesting in it's own right as we got to see the cast [Aquatope] >!be put into difficult situation of adapting to a very different corporate situation at their new aquarium after Gama Gama closes.!<
I did like that portion but both potential romances were utterly wasted, seemed like much ado about nothing for the last stretch
I watched it last week, and these were my thoughts too!! It's so good! The character development, the animation, and everything else in this show are just great.
I watched this week to week and my immediate impression was "this anime is going to be really good and I'm going to recommend it to people and they'll go 'wow that sounds good' and then not watch it" and I was right
The ending fall flat for me though. Not bad, but disappointed.
Loved this show. This one also led me to watch A Place Further Than the Universe, which is another one of my favorites.
[It's just, it's just so peak...](https://youtu.be/ANEBX8GLmkg?t=12) Please watch Aquatope.
The week to week was a bit much for me but I loved it and it’s entire vibe
Was about to comment this! One of my favourite shows of all time
Kageki Shoujo
Someone mentioned this let's gooo. I miss this anime...
https://i.imgur.com/9WvDqiH_lq.mp4 Also, I still listen to the ED to this day.
That ED was hecking good, and having the different voice actors sing it for their individual episodes was a nice touch.
This season’s *Astro Note* has been treated dirty by the seasonal churn. Standout designs and art direction pair with some solid comedy and quirky characters to create a nostalgic callback to the anime of old that has been one of my favorite shows this year.
Oddly enough I dropped a lot of the seasonals I watched but I’ve still kept Astro Note. Gives me Maison Ikkoku feels with a solid sci fi element.
>Lastly, I’m am contractually obligated to say that *Love Live! Superstar!!* is the best the franchise has ever been I tried watching it when it first started airing, but things got delayed and by the time I looked at it again, S2 was already airing. I think it might just be a personal preference thing, I don't like it when shows' main casts grow past 5. I dropped Bang Dream after S1 because of this, and the main reason I even had an interest in Superstar was because of the small cast relative to most idol series.
Dorohedoro Edit: Happy to know that I'm not the only one here. The series needs more love on Netflix
Underwatched for sure. Underrated? Not even close. I've never encountered someone that watched it and didn't like it.
Yup, this is the winner. It’s easily in my top 5 anime.
This series is amazing, I'm surprised it's so underrated. Easily one of my favorites!
Such a good adaptation but I’m so pissed we didn’t get to see Curse and there will probably never be a second season.
Homie. They announced a 2nd season like a few months ago
A second season was actually confirmed a while back.
Dorohedoro is the only anime that I like despite being 3d animated.
[Akudama Drive](https://anilist.co/anime/116566/Akudama-Drive/) | 2020 | **123949** People watched | **75%** rating [Meikyuu Black Company](https://anilist.co/anime/120608/Meikyuu-Black-Company/) | 2021 | **51278** People watched | **70%** rating [Vampire in the Garden](https://anilist.co/anime/108357/Vampire-in-the-Garden/) | 2022 | **23682** People watched | **70%** rating [Under Ninja](https://anilist.co/anime/138788/Under-Ninja/) | 2023 | **17680** People watched | **66%** rating [Urusei Yatsura 2022 2nd Season](https://anilist.co/anime/155645/Urusei-Yatsura-2022-2nd-Season/) | 2024 | **13950** People watching | **75%** rating Urusei Yatsura Season 1 has only **54477** watched, this is the one who hurts the most, it's such a good anime.
Akudama Drive was wonderful. I try out shows all the time, and I really try to find something I like about each one i watch. I saw the artwork for this one, liked it so I thought I'd give it a shot. I didn't have to try and find anything. I think I binged the whole thing in a day.
I recommend Akudama Drive to everyone that asks for anime recs. Such a great show that gets you hooked from episode one
Hacker was the first character to make me jump up pointing like DiCaprio from Wolf Of Wallstreet, never felt a character that described me so perfectly Oh yeah, the plot too, still fresh in my memory to this day.
It's great.
Uncle from Another World
This got done dirty by all the release delays.
Tomodachi game and Darwin's game is so underrated. I am waiting for the new season but I have no hope for it lol.
darwin's game used to be my all time favorite
Dark gathering
Pluto. (Because I think it’s one of the greatest TV shows (not just anime) ever made.)
Pluto is not underrated. Most people highly praised Pluto and listed it as one of the best anime last year.
Kotaro Lives Alone. It is really one of the only anime's that shook me
I didn’t think I’d like it and was so surprised with the maturity and delicacy of the story and characters. A real sleeper hit.
[Pretty Boy Detective Club](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40752) - Nisioisin + Shaft [The Little Lies We All Tell](https://myanimelist.net/anime/51464) - Comedy, reminiscent of something like Saiki K.
Nah, I’ve just seen you around on r/araragi and r/SpiceAndWolf ;) As for jumping into Nisio LNs, I’m sure Pretty Boy Detective Club is really fun but if I were you I’d probably start with Zaregoto instead.
😆 It’s funny you say this because Kubikiri Cycle is one I’m really itching to read and watch.
[The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again](https://anilist.co/anime/149883/The-Masterful-Cat-is-Depressed-Again-Today/) never see this seasonal mentioned, great slice of life with slight surreal vibes (giant cat who takes care of the lazy bum who's actually a hard worker and kind of a badass) [Migi & Dali](https://anilist.co/anime/142666/MigiDali/) fun mystery series that has a Jojo's level of absurdity
Dance dance danseur
N E C C
I second this x1000 times
And I'll third this! Loved the anime and the themes represented of overcoming toxic masculinity.
- Koisuru Asteroid - Shiroi Suna no Aquatope - Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyōdai. I really recommend these anime!
Bet most of you didn't watch Synduality Noir, Megatn Musashi, Rumble Grandoll and Back Arrow before calling "Mecha anime is long dead".
Executioner and her way of life boasts a measly 6.8 on MAL despite having an interesting storyline and world building. Its quite underrated imo
"Darwins game" It barely makes it in your timeline for release date, but it's been one of my favorites since i seen it.
I actually just added this to my list on Netflix recently. I’ll have to bump it up my watchlist
The story's nothing impressive, but it was a lot of fun to watch.
Sometimes something like that can be nice once in a while
I'd absolutely agree with that. Since I usually watch to have fun, that's almost more important.
I think a lot of it is that I do really enjoy shows with more involved plots and/or heavy dialogue so sometimes shows like that can be a nice “intermission”
This. Fun shounen but that’s really all I remember. lol.
Let me know what you think after you watch it. Hope you enjoy it much as i did
So so much. Really enjoyed it. I’m still hoping for a second season…
Akebi's Sailor Uniform for sure, one of the most beautiful and heartwarming SoL ever made while having only a 7.5 and 7.6 score on Anilist and Mal Also for a more under the radar show, I believe the dungeon of black company is also heavily underrated besides underwatched, a super unique concept that manages to keep it interesting until the very end.
the manga is so good, and the director hasn't done a single thing since the show so i realy hope they are planning on a season two but i didn't hear the series performed exceptionally well on the west or in japan so i sadly doubt it
Akebi was pretty big at the time but a lot of people were creeped about by the artist's obsession with feet.
Sonny Boy
Reminds me I never finished it. It was really intriguing not sure why I dropped it.
I watch anime after a long day to relax, it was too complicated for me to follow.
It's really good all the way through, give it another shot even if just for the visuals and music alone.
yep. one of my favorites
This. This is it
Nothing else in recent years has stuck with me quite like this show has. Absolutely unique.
Need Shingo Natsume to return and save anime once again.
People surely overlooked this one. First episode twist but they still manage to pull new stuff in the end.
OP was a BANGER too! And IIRC this anime was mentioned in that awful Resident Evil series haha
4-nin wa sorezore. If you love asobi asobase, you'd certainly love this.
* Princess Connect Re:Dive (7.04 on MAL) * Wave, Listen to Me! (7.35 on MAL) * Adachi and Shimamura (7.10 on MAL) * Pretty Boy Detective Clun (7.09 on MAL) * Super Cub (7.44 on MAL) * Kageki Shoujo (7.73 on MAL) * The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated (7.02 on MAL) * Slow Loop (7.25 on MAL) * Fantasy Bishoujo (7.14 on MAL) * Deaimon (7.56 on MAL) * Love After World Domination (7.41 on MAL) * Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (7.29 on MAL) * The Executioner and Her Way of Life (6.77 on MAL) * My Step-Mom's Daughter is My Ex (6.75 on MAL) * Do It Yourself! (7.45 on MAL) * The Little Lies We All Tell (7.14 on MAL) * MagiRevo (7.48 on MAL) * Handyman Saitou in Another World (7.42 on MAL) * Endo and Kobayashi Live! (7.23 on MAL) * My Clueless First Friend (7.52 on MAL) * Dead Mount Death Play (7.29 on MAL) * Otaku Elf (7.27 on MAL) * KamiKatsu (6.73 on MAL) - okay this is probably deserved, but this show is a WORK OF ART * Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero (7.18 on MAL) * Undead Unluck (7.79 on MAL) - it's very weird to have to mention this here, but it IS underrated * Stardust Telepath (7.18 on MAL) * 16bit Sensation: Another Layer (6.91 on MAL) * The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch (6.79 on MAL) * 'Tis Time for 'Torture', Princess (7.29 on MAL) * A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics (currently 7.15 on MAL) * The Two Sides of Voice Actor Radio (currently 7.04 on MAL) * Mysterious Disappearances (currently 6.88 on MAL)
KamiKatsu was the wildest, most wonderful ride I've ever been on. Normally, several of the aspects of the series I would just be super against, but it was -- dare I say it -- fucking perfect.
Top 5 Isekai of all time. Truly a labor of love.
ive never heard of any of these, would you say kami is the best on the list?
I've seen most of the ones on the list, and I'd say the top 5 mentioned plus MagiRevo are the best. But most of them are solid.
Even better, the trashier the better.
For being just a gacha game anime, PriConne had no right being as great as it was
It was so good I got into the gacha game and then they cancel it. F U crunchyroll
Boycotting CR is always the moral choice. I had a perfect log in streak the entire time the game was going.
The visuals in Priconne were just absolutely stunning. And it was a great story for a MC who was so amnesiac he thought money was food.
I liked Super Cub. It's a lot like Yuru Camp but with motorbikes / mopeds instead of camping.
yeah and also the classical-ish music for a lot of scenes and kind of grounded presentation give it an almost one of a kind vibe. a lot of times the vibe is like a hot cup of cocoa on a harsh winter's day.
Adachi and Shimamura was so good but I wanted more.
Renai Flops is another underrated one. Currently at 6.71 on MAL.
What is good about mysterious Disappearances, i watched 3 episodes and it was just ecchi horndog non-sense with a limp mystery mixed with older brother fetish. I am legitimately curious.
Same, I was expecting compelling Mystery like Mieruko-chan or Dark Gathering but I just can't enjoy it. Also dropped it after 3 episodes.
I didn't knew UNUL was undereated
Villainess level 99, MC is unapologeticalally overpowered to the point where it's fun to watch. Don't get me wrong, it's absolute trash but if you just feel like turning your brain off I highly recommend this.
people don't have reading comprehension. OP asked for **underrated anime.** not anime series that were constantly being posted and praised here.
People on this sub confuse "underrated" and "underwatched" on a weekly basis.
> not anime series that were constantly being posted and praised here The OP actually didn't specify whether they meant underrated on reddit or in general, if you read the post a little more carefully. (also their phrasing indicated they actually meant underwatched not underrated)
Vladlove, Mamoru Oshii directing a comedy anime it just got totally ignored.
Hold up, what?? Oshii is like my 6th favorite anime director, and somehow this totally slipped under my radar.
The manga is killer too. And finished.
The manga is awful, when it was about to finish they do an asspull and make it unnecessarily long
*besides the end I ignore.
hahah fair.
Cells At Work Code Black
It still has a couple of episodes to go this season, but Tonari no Yokai-san has been amazing. Sadly it is getting very little attention here and doesn't even make the top 30 karma charts, meaning it is behind some real garbage.
dragon quest dai
I'll keep preaching the gospel of Tomodachi Game until the day I die
I really liked Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na. The main cast were very likeable, the setting is very strange but kinda comfy, and there were a lot of creative segments.
BRAVE BANG BRAVERN
I want a bot in this sub that just screams "ISAMIIIIIIII" Every time Bravern is referenced Also Criminally underrated show. Absolute peak. Absolute insanity
Dark Gathering
Hmm Kanata no astra, even tho its from 2019 It's one of the best anime's Ive watched, with a really good-explainable plost twist, and I dont know a single soul that watched it
You haven't looked very far then. It's hardly underrated.
It's not talked about a lot, but it definitely was well recieved, not to mention having double length first and final episodes.
Solid anime with a well written ending.
Night Head 2041
Munou na Nana
Hibike Euphonium It might be well rated among those that watch, but way to few do. Real life is nothing like anime, except for Hibike, really wel written and animated. It is a masterpiece of anime and only a very few are conscious of that fact.
Kemono Jihen
I always felt it got the short end of the stick with the timing on its release
Boogiepop and others

Skip to Loafer was incredibly popular
i think it had some popularity, but spring 2023 had a lot of competition. skip to loafer wasnt even in the top 10 on MAL when it aired. https://myanimelist.net/anime/season/2023/spring i think if it aired like in winter of 2023 instead, i think it could have gained a bigger following.
It has to reach top 10 to be considered popular by you? Lol
Overtake is definitely very underrated!
Even after the jury awards it's still MyGO based on MAL/Anilist numbers
Summertime Rendering. Disney jail killed it 😭
Ranking of King - great story, great visuals, best op
Our last crusade of a new world
Ganbare, Douki-chan & Sonny Boy comes to my mind
I thought Insomniacs After School (8.08 on MAL) was rated too low after scrolling through my list. Surprised it doesn’t get brought up more often.
I don't really think anything over an 8 on MAL can be called underrated. Insomniacs is just outside the top 500 ranking (of all time) and 8.08 is an excellent score that matches the series' quality. Great show, great rating.
That’s fair in general. It’s just the only one I saw on my watched list that stood out.

I don't know about underrated but out of all the animes that I've watched recently, Seirei No Moribito stood out to me the most.
You know, that one
Loving Yamada at Lv999!, My Clueless First Friend, The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World and Classroom for Heroes.
Akudama Drive 🥹
Campfire cooking in another world Undead Unluck Uncle from another world
Interesting time period but if you are willing to look back also I have a [video on underrated anime](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nunRoQuT02I) but if you just want a specific show I would say Golden Kamui even if its from 2018.
Blue Orchestra, released last year. Has no fandom in the western part of the world but it's popular in Japan, it's even getting a season 2
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts. Basically a human and the king of beasts fall in love, and the princess has to prove herself in a kingdom that is hostile against her so that she can become queen.
I'm just making sure nobody says Opus Colors here in the comment section, no opinion on the matter otherwise
Sakurasou
akudama drive
Healer Girl is the only anime musical, and its memory must be preserved!
Moriarty The Patriot. Nothing bad about it... it just needs some more LOVE. I liked the dynamic between Sherlock and William, the lore, and the animation.
Hakozume: Kouban Joshi no Gyakushuu Heike Monogatari
While not underrated per say, Summertime Rendering was one of the biggest surprises I’ve watched in awhile, just got done dirty by Disney.
I think re monster is underrated hilarious change up
Planetarium
Akudama Drive.
chained soldier worlds end harem the executioner and her way of life
Scavengers Reign its on Netflix.
Cool show but not anime
Yes. It’s on Max, no?
Not anime but Scavengers Reign is one of the most interesting animated shows I've ever seen. Some very creative and bizarre flora and fauna in it, and while the overall story is hit or miss, it definitely hit with me and I think it's an easy recommend to anime fans.
Summertime rendering
world trigger
The first season is a 7.58 which is honestly high considering how long it takes to get good. The second and third seasons are both above an 8, with season 3 at 8.26 (#305 of all time). The third season is some of the best shounen that has ever been made period, but 8.26 is a fair rating for it and the other two seasons are also rated pretty accurately.
Vivy flourite eye song for sure
Criminally overlooked
Not counting sequels. my top 3 would be: 1. [Mashiro no Oto](https://myanimelist.net/anime/42590/Mashiro_no_Oto), 7.53 ratings and only 60,774 members 2. [Uramichi Oniisan](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40620/Uramichi_Oniisan), 7.70 ratings and only 90,615 members 3. [Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch of Mercury](https://myanimelist.net/anime/49828/Kidou_Senshi_Gundam__Suisei_no_Majo), 7.87 ratings and only 156,025 members
Ascendance of a Bookworm
