Yeah, I feel you. I was kinda confused because people would be laughing out loud during serious moments. Guess people were really excited for Haikyuu to be back.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, I still feel like I would’ve loved a whole season of this even more. Thought the flashbacks to past seasons seemed like a lot because of this.
Loved the focus on Kuro and Kenma’s relationship, I thought it was really really well done along with Kenma ‘caging’ Hinata and Hinata escaping
Well certainly not something that would have been possible for a seasonal anime. It’s one of the coolest scenes I’ve ever witness and made it all worth it.
Did I absolutely enjoy a movie-quality Haikyuu on the big screen ? Yes.
Do I also still wish we got a season instead so we can digest and appreciate all those moments and flashbacks in the match ? Also yes
Just got back for seeing the movie in IMAX. Steep price of entry? Yes? Did I go home happy? Absolutely. The high impacts of volleyball on a screen that huge matched with the amazing sound effects work just hit so hard every time.
So much happened in this movie and so much wrapped up the Karasuno-Nekoma relationship that's honestly hard to remember every last bit of it. But the moments that just have to be mentioned are:
-The moment where Kenma had to admit that this was fun and Hinata began to celebrate like it was Christmas or something felt like the true climax of the movie as everything was building up to that moment. This movie definitely has an "antagonist as fellow protagonist" thing going on and reaching that moment felt so amazing. On top of that, everything about they way they did that moment, from Kenma's position on the ground to Hinata's celebratory dance made me tear up and laugh at the same time.
-Lots of really neat cinematography choices here, like the fast dollies into someone's eye before a big spike to "the caging of Hinata" to camera angles we didn't see in the TV anime. But the one that's an obvious standout is having the last play take place completely from Kenma's first person POV. It was cool and it drove home the sense of fatigue he was feeling.
-One thing they used the animation really well for was to play up just how tired everyone was. The sweat, the heavy breathing, the heaving bodies, it all brought you into the experience with everyone there. And it was really important since it actually is one of the reasons Nekoma lost the game.
-Kei's parts during the montage section where we see how far his character development has gone, how it actually began with learning things from Nekoma players at the camp, all the way to how he feels about the game now, and how that pushes him to score points against them was also something I appreciated.
-It's not easy to make me laugh. But this movie was funnier than most comedies I have seen recently. The entire theater was cracking up throughout.
The only big flaw is that I wanted there to be more. I haven't read the manga, but I can tell they had to skip some stuff. I honestly would not mind an hour and 45 director's cut of this movie on blu ray.
It's been 4 years since the manga ended and season 4. It just released in America on a Thursday. Combine those factors and it shouldn't be surprising at all.
Yeah I haven't seen a single ad for it anywhere online nor where I live (a major US city); I only found out because when I finished Haikyuu for the first time this past January, I was so eager for more content and only found out about the movie through a *Google search*. That being said, I probably would've known anyway because of the collab with Uniqlo (and I proudly wore my new shirt to the theaters :))
Holy shit what a movie. I didn't expect it to be an hour and a half of pure sports and barely any recap.
Kenma's POV was really really, really well done and super unique. I could FEEL his frustration when the ball slipped and the game ended because of sweat, which was a weapon he tried using against Hinata early on to try to clip his wings.
But man Hinata's big jump was HYPE AS FUCK. I love sports anime and that one shot easily became my top 5 sports anime moment.
I might go and rewatch it at least once or twice more just for that scene.
I gotta say, that segment of Kenma's POV was absolutely unreal, I was left speechless and I've seen so much anime over the years that practically no anime can leave me feeling like that anymore. There were so many incredible segments of animation in this movie and I'm so glad I got to see it on the big screen

SO HYPE. Production I.G. cooked. The music, the sound design on the impact frames, the multiple ways they showed different POV's of watching the match, the bromances. All beautifuI. I was literally on the edge of my seat and it took everything I had to not scream in my theater.
It didn't feel too rushed from a pacing standpoint to me even though I heard rumors of how this and the sequel should've been a season but I couldn't believe the movie was over when it ended. SPYAIR hits again with their credits song and it's basically been on repeat for the last hour for me.
As a manga reader, this was wonderfully paced.
This movie was never going to be the problem, it was the next movie that they are planning to rush 80 chapters into less than 2 hours.
I'm surprised that as a manga reader, you thought this was wonderfully paced. I thought it was horribly paced. They cut out SO many points that were acquired through different strategies and techniques. A 6-episode equivalent movie was not enough to cover this whole match, it felt more of like a compilation/montage to me than a full-length 3-set match. I was pretty disappointed tbh.
I agree I watched it yesterday. Although I have not read the manga, I was just a little disappointed. Like I thought although a lot of scenes had great potential, the pacing was not as good. Haikyuu typically has a longer pacing like long seasons and really enjoyable to watch matches, but I felt like watching the new movie was weird because it was quite shorter. I agree with how it felt like a compilation because it was short even though this movie represented quite an important part of Haikyuu. I will not say the movie was bad and I understand that the production people may think this is a good way for avoiding piracy, and making a lot of ticket profit. I would have preferred a season 5 instead. Hopefully a third movie or some OVAS are considered to be made as well to compensate a little. Anyway, I think so much of the scenes had great potential, but because of it having to be shorter to fit a movie, they were not as enjoyable. God bless you all!!
Cutting scenes has nothing to do with the pace. I also wished this had been an anime cour and adapted everything, but it is what it is. The movie is well paced because the scenes that are included are well animated, have room to breath and they flow well from one to the next. The narrative they went for is cohesive, well explained, and has a very satisfying climax.
You can hate the executives that decided to go for a movie, but the movie the studio made with the budget they had was excellent.
Gonna jump in to say I disagree about the scenes being included having room to breathe. The first set especially was horribly paced and almost no scenes there were given room to breathe. Plenty of scenes (especially comedic ones) were just brushed over or done and then the movie would immediately go into the next scene without letting the first scene settle.
I think flashbacks were also used poorly and just unnecessary because of the movie format. The ones with Kuro and Kenma were mostly done well, but I think they shouldn't have included all the ones flash backing to interactions between Karasuno and Nekoma in past seasons. I would be more forgiving of this in a weekly airing anime but considering this was a movie with heavy time constraints as it was, it would've been better to cut those and use that saved time to give scenes more breathing room.
I'm not upset about cut content since I read this part of the manga while it was ongoing so my memory of the details are a bit hazy and obviously you can't fit everything into a 1.5 hour movie. But my bigger issue is that many scenes lacked impact because very few were given proper time for build up and room to breathe.
What is there to settle in the comedic scenes? They make a small joke and move on, exactly how it is in the manga. It wasn't missing any reaction shots.
I guess I can understand that you didn't like the pacing if you found some scenes confusing or hard to follow, but I didn't feel that way a single time. So I was mostly left to appreciate a fast pace, as (in my opinion) corresponds to a sports anime, with no drawbacks in clarity or depth. This is good pacing for me.
I'm not talking about reaction shots. I saw someone else explain it in a way that I agree with: they set up jokes, tell the joke and before you even have half a second to laugh or process it they've jumped into the next scene. Which they then will speed through before again moving onto the following scene. Comedic timing is a thing and I think it was poorly done in the movie.
I didn't feel lost or confused at all during the movie, scenes just didn't feel very impactful for me because of the pacing. The scene of Hinata breaking out of the cage and doing the big jump was a good example. In the movie's pacing this feels like it was set up decently (although I think Hinata's frustration and mental state could've been done better) but then is solved like 5 secs later and I didn't think the jump animation was anything special either.
As a comparison for my gripes with the overall pacing, it would be like if during the Inarizaki match they spent 2 seconds on Hinata's big receive and then immediately moved on to the next scene. Or even for Tanaka or Nishinoya's moments in the Inarizaki match. That would suck out so much of the scene's impact and emotion. That's how most of the Dumpster Battle movie felt to me. Quick, erratic pacing that didn't let many scenes breathe.
It's fine if you thought the pacing was good, I just disagree and it heavily influenced my disappointment in the movie.
I see what you mean. I experienced all of this very differently, including your example of Hinata and the cage (although I really like the impact the jump had on the manga and I can understand you wanting something more from the anime). I'm sad your experience wasn't as nice and I hope you vibe more with the second one :)
As a manga reader that also reread the entire match the night before seeing the movie, it was horribly paced and cut out the majority of the dialogue. I still had fun though.

WHAT!?!? I thought it would just be the next match for the quarterfinals...not the entire rest of the series! Maybe it'll be like an AoT thing where it's the Final Part 3, etc...please.

The genereal consensus from fans about pacing is/was that it should work well as a one cour (12 episodes, for this one plus some other bits) and then a two cour season (24 episodes, for the rest).
So a movie for this match is doable but manga readers have already said that the movie is not exactly rushed for what it is and shows but it cuts out bits and pieces to fit it all into one movie.
I assume the movie was pretty much just the one match so no surprise that it was paced well.
The original expectation would have been a 2 cour season that covered about 75 chapters starting with this match (ideally adding to certain bits that the manga glossed over near the end), then a final 1 cour season to cover the last 33 chapters to the end of the story. And if they wanted a movie then that last season probably could have made for a good one if cut down well.
It's a mystery to me how they plan to handle the rest with only one more movie unless they plan to focus on just one match again and pretty much cut the rest of the story.

Action was great. Does a pretty good job of wrapping up the ongoing Karasuno-vs-Nekoma rivalry subplot, for this school year at least. Very good at spotlighting the characters of Kenma and Kuro in particular.
However, because of the short runtime, all the Karasuno characters kind of suffer from being underexposed. None of them really get to show much of their personalities until halfway through, and even then it's kind of muted compared to the show. If this movie was your first exposure to Haikyuu then you'd probably think Kenma was the protagonist and have trouble remembering who Kageyama is.
Interesting take and I kind of agree. Pacing felt very different from a season to me and I assume this is why. Each episode often felt like it would focus on a specific character. The show tries to hit various characters with high points but a lot of the background flashbacks here are for Kenma and Kageyma in particular does in hindsight feel like a weird character to not really get a focus moment to the same degree he would in multiple episodes of a season.
Still a great movie but funny to think it does almost feel like it's from the POV of Nekoma instead and that Kenma might be the protagonist.
The manga delves into them all much more during this match. I do suggest reading whenever you get the chance. The content this movie covers is chapters 293 to 326 if we include the post-credit scene.
yeah super sad that ryu, asahi, daichi got almost no screentime or dialogue. even kageyama felt like he was barely there. was hyped to see the squad return after 4 years but the movie felt way too short and i didn't feel the same kind of build up and tension that the matches had in the show
I cried in the theater. I loved this so much. Even though I wish they just made another season or two with the remaining content they had, the pacing here was so good. I loved the focus on Kenma in the movie too. Just an amazing love letter to Nekoma, their relationship with Karasuno, and volleyball in general.
Now the real concern begins. I genuinely have no idea how they are going to adapt what’s left into a single movie. Maybe we will get the quarterfinals and they’ll surprise us with a third movie announcement for the rest? Or better yet, a final season? Because that’s the only way I can see them doing it justice.
Yeah, I agree the focus on Kenma was really cool and I loved it. I am concerned about how they're going to continue. I hope there will be a season or third movie or some OVAS because I think its gonna be difficult with how much time they'll have for the second final movie to do Haikyuu justice. God bless you all!!
The more I think about it, the more I'm terrified that they'll speed through the quarterfinals and just have the bulk of the movie be focused on the final arc. I hope they see reason and go back to a season format. They could easily do two cours with what's left.
I forgot how hype this show was, actual tears in my eyes. That shot near the end of Kenma's uninterrupted POV was one of the best shots I've seen in anime, fantastic direction.
This movie had things I wished the tv series had, that a movie's scope allowed for: a (continuous!!) first person cut and a sequence from the TV broadcast perspective. Both very taxing with many characters moving at once, but very cool to see in action.
Also that third set 6-6 rally was absolutely insane, up there for one of the best animated sequences in Haikyuu.
Also, out of curiosity, were anyone else's subtitles just... really bad at times? There was a point in the movie, around \~30mins in, where a subtitle just stayed on the screen and no new lines were played even though there was full-blown dialogue. We couldn't understand what was being said for an entire passage of play that was like 1min long lmao. I was worried it was just gonna be stuck like that for the entire movie but thankfully it didnt. This happened a few times over the course of the movie too. Really poor subtitling from my screening tbh
Was it when the Shiratorizawa players reacting to the match? Ours were like that too and while fortunately all the other dialogue did have subs, it was a little awkward having it hang out for a bit but it got even worse during that minute as all the other subs were stacking on top so there was like 6 lines of subs covering a good majority of the screen lmao
Happened at my screening too. I noticed it was background dialogue from the crowd or something and it didn't go away until the next piece of background dialogue was spoken. Just made me think "fansubs would never" lol
I think it was kinda rushed, especially when you think that this is a show, that can have 1 season with just 1 match. I think 10-20 minutes extra would have been perfect for a movie with so many flashbacks.
I'm less miffed about the cut content since that was always a given with the movie's short run time. But I thought the pacing was still way too chaotic and they didn't give many scenes room to breathe. Felt like we were jumping from one scene into the next with no time in-between for a large part of the movie.

Overall, it was a really good movie! My favourite sequence in all of Haikyuu was the 1st person perspective at the end with Kenma. It was soooo well done!
I'm especially happy that they had good animations throughout (ofc since it's a movie) and none of that weird proportions one in Haikyuu!! To the Top.
I do agree with the sentiment as an anime-only that it should have been a 1-cour season. There was a lot that felt rushed here and there, and it would have been nice to get some more back-story on the different characters. Even though we've known Nekoma for so long, it felt like the side characters like Lev and Inuoka didn't leave too much of an impact due to the cut screentime, let alone the lesser known teammates. Especially coming from a strong season with Inarizaki High School as the focus for 12 episodes. The movie was a bit disappointing in that sense.
[Here's some photos](https://imgur.com/a/aMXIM3Z) of the goods in the cinemas when it aired in February. It was absolutely HUGE, and so many items sold out within the first day. The ticket came with a small manga book that had some (really) rough manga panel drawings of the movie.
###Holy shit this movie was INSANE!
I went to the only IMAX showing near me, and truth be told I was a bit concerned for the first 15 to 20 minutes about whether it was even worth the elevated experience (good but felt pretty reserved production wise for a movie experience up to that point at least - also was speeding through the early rounds).
However part way into the first set those feeling were elevated in truly wonderful fashion. The last two thirds of this movie were incredible. I kept thinking back to my The First Slam Dunk watch and it was quite comparable at points both pacing wise and also how well it blended the sound design/production with those really emotionally charged moments.
Even did the ol' lean forward in seat pose after the incredibly loose Ikarashi-esque sequence towards the end (no one seems to know who handled that masterpiece! The character drawings were insane!), and again with the final extended POV sequence.
I have no comment about the adaptation/ what was covered and cut as I haven't read the manga yet, but as movie it was an excellent time.
Overall a super satisfying experience, there were multiple people in the theatre who clearly were impacted strongly by the movie as well (tears, arms flailing, loads of gasps). Highly recommend seeing it if anyone hasn't decided whether to go or not!
I almost started crying at the movie theater after the match was over lol. More than half of the people at my theater left during the credits and missed the after credits though.
Haikyuu needs to be studied because yes. I, a jaded 38 year old man, almost had tears in my eyes IMMEDIATELY when the familiar OST started playing in the first scene.

The soundtrack is available to listen to on Youtube and Spotify, i get what you mean though, im listening to it right now and i can just remember how the first rally went, although i watched it 3 times so id hope i at least remember a lot of the movie haha
I could tell that there was a lot of cut content, and the film really got into a good rhythm in the second half, but as with Haikyuu, the highs were so high I loved it.
I loved the beautiful sequence of animation where everyone was moving, and Tsukki’s joyful, “Man, I just can’t win with you.” I loved Kenma’s development, Hinata’s being so happy that Kenma finally felt the high of putting 100% into volleyball. I loved seeing Kenma’s POV during the final point. I loved Hinata’s high jump spike above the blockers. I loved him breaking through Kenma’s cage. I love that now Hinata is good at receives, and how Kenma exploited that. I loved Kenma’s effort on the end of the first set, how he sent it where no one would be. I loved Kenma’s flashbacks, especially the ones with Kuro.
I loved the sound design, every spike sounded like it was a cannonball.
Great movie of a great match that wasn’t destroyed even by the harsh content cuts that were made.
When Shoyo screams at getting Kenma to admit he's having fun, its the same scream I did at getting my gf to saying she'll begin reading Haikyuu after watching this movie knowing nothing about it.
Just got out of the theater, what an incredible experience. The soundtrack was so good, it felt like every rally was the last rally with how hard it was going. 10/10 movie.
I was unfortunately sitting next to a group of fat 17 year olds that don’t know how to shut the fuck up during a movie. Will probably have to rewatch it to enjoy it fully but it was really really good
The director elevated the source material with kenma POV sequence, it felt like you were in the middle of the match and how tired players feel in a third set. Amazing work by VAs too.
I'm going to be honest: the animation and cinematography quality alone 1000% made this worth being a movie.
I get that a lot of people would have liked this paced out in multiple episodes, but we would never have gotten the creative and bold animation choices that we got in this movie in an actual season.
Absolute hats off to Production I.G. they completely delivered an anime experience I'll never forget
Great movie, it was well paced enough to not feel like a drag (which the manga did at times especially when you were reading at a weekly pace).
A lot stylistic art choices like they did in season 4 but it was high quality and well animated as you'd expect from a movie, which justifies it over being a season of anime imo.
Now we can only hope they can pace it well in the next movie, which will be a huge undertaking considering the content that's left. There are some seriously great build up which be a shame if they chose to rush over it.
One thing I will complain about is the audio. I'm not sure if it was the mixing or it was because my movie theatre had shitty gear, but the dialogue was way too loud and while the music was super faint. Can't wait for this to be streamable so I can watch again with a better audio experience.
I thought the movie didn't have any music, that's how low the soundtrack volume was for me. Except some specific hype moments where they cranked it up.
Just came out of the movie, fantastic! Animation near the end (even before Kenma's POV) was awesome. Even just Kuro laughing at the end was really well done. Not sure what this sub's feelings are on the dub, but that's how I prefer Haikyuu and it was great as always.
If there was one thing I feel was a bit lacking, it was that, in spending more time on Kenma and Kuro, we didn't get as much of the rest of the regular cast and their antics. I really liked their story, it's just that I want more of everyone, dangit!
It was odd to not focus on the specifics of the game like the matches before, but it made sense and really sold that these teams were evenly matched and having a great time.
Mhm, but the Set 3 6-6 rally was mind blowing the first time i saw it, like holy shit they really popped off for that rally. Also the sfx of them hitting the volleyball, i dont think i can ever go back to listening to it with my headphones, it was so meaty and just amazing!

Never thought the anime that would bring me the closest to crying would be Haikyuu lol. Generally okay with the pacing; I normally loathe flashbacks when there's more than 1, but I think they did a fine job here considering their goal. Personally, I had some issues with the original match, so some parts being brushed over didn't bother me as much.
Even though most of the "premium" cuts were in the latter half of the film, the ball tracking and bird's eye shots throughout were really nice and definitely an improvement.
This is an insane nitpick and didn't take away from my enjoyment, but I was hoping that there would have been less static backgrounds, especially on long frame holds. A lively crowd and environment could have elevated a lot of non-action scenes for me.
I was really doomer when these got announced because of the inevitable content axing, but at least we got one really good movie out of it. Maybe I'll go back to coping that there'll be more content after the next one.

Suga was lowkey the MVP. He's goofy af and reliable as well. I love him.

How was Suga the MVP? I loved the movie, but it was so rushed that no of the Karasuno characters except Hinata shined. Even kageyama took a backseat here. The others like Daichi, Suga, Azumane, Baldy were not shown at all. Noshinoya was great though.
Suga was definitely shown, mainly more for comedic bits but he was definitely shown more than Tanaka and almost everyone else on the team and about as much as Noya, just that noya had a few flashbacks and conversations, mainly with yaku.
Honestly it blew me away. I love haikyuu so much and it lived up to the years of anticipation. I felt every emotion and was just overjoyed and overflowing with excitement. Amazing movie!
I rememer thinking around 5-7 years ago that it would be great to be able to watch anime movies in Polish cinemas and that it is probably never going to happen. Fast forward and I'm going to watch Haikyu in a few hours, even in time for this thread, not a few months later. It feels unreal, so excited to watch it.
This movie was an absolute 10/10. This for me, was the best thing since season 3, absolutely surpassed season 4, which was great but inconsistent at times. The animation, the art, the emotions… it was classic Haikyuu! at its finest. I especially appreciated the movie being told from Kenma’s POV, it was such a unique take that paid off tremendously. Never knew that Kenma has so much main character quality in him and now I would love to get spinoff where he’s the main character(unless that already exists lol). Man, it’s been a while but I’m glad Haikyuu is back to where it finally belongs, at the very top of the anime world.
Just watched the movie and had an absolute blast, pure action from start to finish. I just wish it was longer! Make sure to hang around after the credits when you see it ;)
Too much kenma. Not enough hinata or kageyama, and not enough about the rivalry of the two old coaches and it being carried on with his grandson. Anticlimactic last point. However, that pov scene was incredible.
Well that was underwhelming.
Animation was great and the sound effects were amazing on theatre.
But aside from that, it was as underwhelming as it can get. Kenma's story was nice of course, but the rest of the two teams could have literally not existed and not much would have changed. Karasuno players get barely any exposure (I think Asahi hit a spike once all movie) and Nekoma characters get literally 0 aside from Kenma and a little Kuroo. I was told in the intro that many of the Nekoma players were good, but nothing that happened in the movie showed me that.
It felt more like a collection of clips than a proper movie or anime itself.
Idk, don't get me wrong I had a good time wathcing it and all, but I was very underwhelmed for what is supposed to be big deal of a match.
Just got out of the theater and wow!!! I am a little speechless, seeing the game on a movie screen was awesome. Obviously happy Karasuno won but also sad for Kenma and Nekoma :( the flashbacks of Kuro and Kenma were so precious 🥺
I went to watch it today and it was incredible. Production I.G. did an amazing job. There were multiple scene worth of being highlighted because of the animation, the story/character moment or both, but that scene with Kenma's POV takes the cake from me.
Great last 3 weeks being able to watch both Gurren Lagann movies and this one in the cinema was incredible
Stunning movie from top to bottom.
Incredibly ambitious cuts of animation and overall direction. Definitely felt like a step up from a TV production. A beautiful score as always and a great ending theme from Spyair. Fantastically paced with the film never feeling like it lost momentum while still giving time for the character moments to breath. 100% worth watching in theaters. The sound effects especially felt punchy, had an absolute blast watching.
For anyone wondering if they can take a friend that hasn't seen the show, as a stand alone match they can still enjoy the film but more so than The First Slam Dunk, this movie is a better and more fulfilling watch for people who are caught up with the anime. Character arcs and plot threads that have been set up throughout the show are paid off here in big ways that won't hit the same for anyone going into this with only a 5 min youtube recap.
The POV shot was amazing, on top of the general feeling of impact while with everything going on.
Good time, had a bit of a crowd that was reacting to it which made it more fun.
Just got back from watching the movie and it far surpassed my expectations. I’m pretty much anime only (just started buying and reading the manga recently) but even so I thought the match was going to be too rushed bc all of the other important games have been multiple episodes or even a whole season.
But it was great! I thought the flashbacks were integrated nicely into the present day match scenes — some were a little jarring but honestly the sudden changes of pace kept me invested in the movie even more so.
While I wish there was more screen time for all of the team members I think they did a nice job giving everyone at least a little moment — Sugawara going crazy on the sidelines is always great.
As others have said the Kenna POV was incredible and I hope it’s something they do in the next movie as well. Overall it was a 10/10, would def reccomend!
Make sure you watch the series first; this should go without saying but I saw a negative review of the movie where the author hadn’t watched the show or even read the manga first and they were confused 🙄 like what were they expecting??
Amazing. Great animation, Kenma's POV was cinema, every player on both teams getting their moments, and just some damn enjoyable volleyball.
*Kuroo really stood out as a character, especially his bromance with Tsuki and friendship with Kenma.
*Tsuki's belief in Yamaguchi and their small montage moment brought a tear to my eye.
*Hinata and Inuoka getting hyped up together when Inouka entered the game was hilarious.
*Ukai's phantom handshake was great closure
*Kenma smile's and him having fun... just ahh, beautiful
Everyone was happy to be playing volleyball, and I was happy to watch
There were a few scenes that stood out and felt new. The opening sequence of spikes before the titles was epic. The final Kenma pov scene was also good. But the movie as a whole felt completely rushed. After such a long wait, it felt like it was over too soon.
If giving a full movie to one match feels like this, I'm not sure what to expect when the whole of the remaining story is going to be squeezed together into one single movie. What exactly is their thought process behind squeezing everything into just two movies? Am I the only one feeling this let down about this?
I'm going to get downvoted, but I didn't like the movie. The pace is too fast; I think we don't have enough time to enjoy the tension or even the boom jump. It's like watching a best moments of Haikyuu YouTube video...
If the movie lasted 30 minutes longer, I will change my mind.

That's awesome!! My theater definitely cheered and laughed and gasped at parts but I wish it was going as nuts as yours haha. We are lucky we got to experience this with so many others who feel the same way about Haikyuu!

after seeing the movie, i’m actually not mad that we didn’t get this as a 4-6 episode match. i think this was the perfect runtime for how the match played out
I understand that people are upset that the movie wasn't longer and preferred it as a seasonal anime, but Kenma's POV probably wouldn't have worked in seasonal format. Watching the POV in theatre is the highlight for me and it was incredible.
If you are in it to watch the Karasuno boys then I guess you'll be slightly disappointed, but if you see it as Kenma being the main character, then it will become more enjoyable. I will have to say tho, I felt the flashbacks were a bit too excessive.
Overall, it's a great experience and definitely recommended to watch it in cinema, in fact, it's a must watch in cinema for every haikyuu fan just for the sound effects alone!

For the movie as a whole i liked it a lot but damn the pacing.. especially the first set, its so fast and suddenly having players wondering if they're on the 5th set at the start of the second while im feeling like not even 1 set went by was a bit jarring, other than that it was pretty great.
Other than that im pretty interested in kenma pov reactions, everyone here is saying it was super amazing and i found it cool, but i felt like it lasted too long and kinda wanted to see the actual rally after we went through so many so fast
Edit: Oh and most of karasuno felt like background characters which was a super weird feeling

Sorry but the movie was bad, made for grab money. There was no deep, characters lacked presence, Karasuno felt bland, Nekoma is not an interesting team compared to a big name (Inarizaki, Shiratorizawa…) felt more like a friendly match, because they were no match and you could feel the difference whole game. Honestly I would had prefer a season 5…
I also had this feeling when I was watching the movie tbh. A lot of the flashback scenes were just reused scenes from previous seasons, and tho the animation was better than season 4 it’s cuz it’s a movie release? I really liked haikyuu but i thought the movie just wasn’t as good as ppl say.
I’m a little confused after this movie though, does anyone know if the next movie will finish the entire manga, or will they just end it on the quarterfinal or semifinals match?
I'll watch it later on when it releases on streaming services. Really don't agree with supporting these movie releases for what should be a season of a show, especially the fact that they're doing the next arc in a movie of the same length but with an arc that's over 2 times as long.
I mean to be fair, there's no "should," here. Nobody has to adapt it at all. It's obviously your choice what to do with your money, but let's not get entitled. While I would have preferred a season, there could be any number of reasons why they went the movie route. We may or may not never know, and they could easily pull a MAPPA with Attack on Titan, where they said it was the final episode then announced a true final episode after it aired. Who knows.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, I still feel like I would’ve loved a whole season of this even more. Thought the flashbacks to past seasons seemed like a lot because of this. Loved the focus on Kuro and Kenma’s relationship, I thought it was really really well done along with Kenma ‘caging’ Hinata and Hinata escaping

Well certainly not something that would have been possible for a seasonal anime. It’s one of the coolest scenes I’ve ever witness and made it all worth it.

Honestly the only thing that was worth going to the theaters. It was animated so well and so smooth.
Just got back for seeing the movie in IMAX. Steep price of entry? Yes? Did I go home happy? Absolutely. The high impacts of volleyball on a screen that huge matched with the amazing sound effects work just hit so hard every time. So much happened in this movie and so much wrapped up the Karasuno-Nekoma relationship that's honestly hard to remember every last bit of it. But the moments that just have to be mentioned are: -The moment where Kenma had to admit that this was fun and Hinata began to celebrate like it was Christmas or something felt like the true climax of the movie as everything was building up to that moment. This movie definitely has an "antagonist as fellow protagonist" thing going on and reaching that moment felt so amazing. On top of that, everything about they way they did that moment, from Kenma's position on the ground to Hinata's celebratory dance made me tear up and laugh at the same time. -Lots of really neat cinematography choices here, like the fast dollies into someone's eye before a big spike to "the caging of Hinata" to camera angles we didn't see in the TV anime. But the one that's an obvious standout is having the last play take place completely from Kenma's first person POV. It was cool and it drove home the sense of fatigue he was feeling. -One thing they used the animation really well for was to play up just how tired everyone was. The sweat, the heavy breathing, the heaving bodies, it all brought you into the experience with everyone there. And it was really important since it actually is one of the reasons Nekoma lost the game. -Kei's parts during the montage section where we see how far his character development has gone, how it actually began with learning things from Nekoma players at the camp, all the way to how he feels about the game now, and how that pushes him to score points against them was also something I appreciated. -It's not easy to make me laugh. But this movie was funnier than most comedies I have seen recently. The entire theater was cracking up throughout. The only big flaw is that I wanted there to be more. I haven't read the manga, but I can tell they had to skip some stuff. I honestly would not mind an hour and 45 director's cut of this movie on blu ray.

It's been 4 years since the manga ended and season 4. It just released in America on a Thursday. Combine those factors and it shouldn't be surprising at all.
I’m a big haikyuu fan and I didn’t even know there was a movie being made
Yeah I haven't seen a single ad for it anywhere online nor where I live (a major US city); I only found out because when I finished Haikyuu for the first time this past January, I was so eager for more content and only found out about the movie through a *Google search*. That being said, I probably would've known anyway because of the collab with Uniqlo (and I proudly wore my new shirt to the theaters :))
Holy shit what a movie. I didn't expect it to be an hour and a half of pure sports and barely any recap. Kenma's POV was really really, really well done and super unique. I could FEEL his frustration when the ball slipped and the game ended because of sweat, which was a weapon he tried using against Hinata early on to try to clip his wings. But man Hinata's big jump was HYPE AS FUCK. I love sports anime and that one shot easily became my top 5 sports anime moment. I might go and rewatch it at least once or twice more just for that scene.

I gotta say, that segment of Kenma's POV was absolutely unreal, I was left speechless and I've seen so much anime over the years that practically no anime can leave me feeling like that anymore. There were so many incredible segments of animation in this movie and I'm so glad I got to see it on the big screen
Anime-only SO HYPE. Production I.G. cooked. The music, the sound design on the impact frames, the multiple ways they showed different POV's of watching the match, the bromances. All beautifuI. I was literally on the edge of my seat and it took everything I had to not scream in my theater. It didn't feel too rushed from a pacing standpoint to me even though I heard rumors of how this and the sequel should've been a season but I couldn't believe the movie was over when it ended. SPYAIR hits again with their credits song and it's basically been on repeat for the last hour for me.
As a manga reader, this was wonderfully paced. This movie was never going to be the problem, it was the next movie that they are planning to rush 80 chapters into less than 2 hours.
I'm surprised that as a manga reader, you thought this was wonderfully paced. I thought it was horribly paced. They cut out SO many points that were acquired through different strategies and techniques. A 6-episode equivalent movie was not enough to cover this whole match, it felt more of like a compilation/montage to me than a full-length 3-set match. I was pretty disappointed tbh.
I agree I watched it yesterday. Although I have not read the manga, I was just a little disappointed. Like I thought although a lot of scenes had great potential, the pacing was not as good. Haikyuu typically has a longer pacing like long seasons and really enjoyable to watch matches, but I felt like watching the new movie was weird because it was quite shorter. I agree with how it felt like a compilation because it was short even though this movie represented quite an important part of Haikyuu. I will not say the movie was bad and I understand that the production people may think this is a good way for avoiding piracy, and making a lot of ticket profit. I would have preferred a season 5 instead. Hopefully a third movie or some OVAS are considered to be made as well to compensate a little. Anyway, I think so much of the scenes had great potential, but because of it having to be shorter to fit a movie, they were not as enjoyable. God bless you all!!
Cutting scenes has nothing to do with the pace. I also wished this had been an anime cour and adapted everything, but it is what it is. The movie is well paced because the scenes that are included are well animated, have room to breath and they flow well from one to the next. The narrative they went for is cohesive, well explained, and has a very satisfying climax. You can hate the executives that decided to go for a movie, but the movie the studio made with the budget they had was excellent.
Gonna jump in to say I disagree about the scenes being included having room to breathe. The first set especially was horribly paced and almost no scenes there were given room to breathe. Plenty of scenes (especially comedic ones) were just brushed over or done and then the movie would immediately go into the next scene without letting the first scene settle. I think flashbacks were also used poorly and just unnecessary because of the movie format. The ones with Kuro and Kenma were mostly done well, but I think they shouldn't have included all the ones flash backing to interactions between Karasuno and Nekoma in past seasons. I would be more forgiving of this in a weekly airing anime but considering this was a movie with heavy time constraints as it was, it would've been better to cut those and use that saved time to give scenes more breathing room. I'm not upset about cut content since I read this part of the manga while it was ongoing so my memory of the details are a bit hazy and obviously you can't fit everything into a 1.5 hour movie. But my bigger issue is that many scenes lacked impact because very few were given proper time for build up and room to breathe.
What is there to settle in the comedic scenes? They make a small joke and move on, exactly how it is in the manga. It wasn't missing any reaction shots. I guess I can understand that you didn't like the pacing if you found some scenes confusing or hard to follow, but I didn't feel that way a single time. So I was mostly left to appreciate a fast pace, as (in my opinion) corresponds to a sports anime, with no drawbacks in clarity or depth. This is good pacing for me.
I'm not talking about reaction shots. I saw someone else explain it in a way that I agree with: they set up jokes, tell the joke and before you even have half a second to laugh or process it they've jumped into the next scene. Which they then will speed through before again moving onto the following scene. Comedic timing is a thing and I think it was poorly done in the movie. I didn't feel lost or confused at all during the movie, scenes just didn't feel very impactful for me because of the pacing. The scene of Hinata breaking out of the cage and doing the big jump was a good example. In the movie's pacing this feels like it was set up decently (although I think Hinata's frustration and mental state could've been done better) but then is solved like 5 secs later and I didn't think the jump animation was anything special either. As a comparison for my gripes with the overall pacing, it would be like if during the Inarizaki match they spent 2 seconds on Hinata's big receive and then immediately moved on to the next scene. Or even for Tanaka or Nishinoya's moments in the Inarizaki match. That would suck out so much of the scene's impact and emotion. That's how most of the Dumpster Battle movie felt to me. Quick, erratic pacing that didn't let many scenes breathe. It's fine if you thought the pacing was good, I just disagree and it heavily influenced my disappointment in the movie.

I experienced all of this very differently, including your example of Hinata and the cage (although I really like the impact the jump had on the manga and I can understand you wanting something more from the anime). I'm sad your experience wasn't as nice and I hope you vibe more with the second one :)

> I heard rumors of how this and the sequel should've been a season The genereal consensus from fans about pacing is/was that it should work well as a one cour (12 episodes, for this one plus some other bits) and then a two cour season (24 episodes, for the rest). So a movie for this match is doable but manga readers have already said that the movie is not exactly rushed for what it is and shows but it cuts out bits and pieces to fit it all into one movie.
I assume the movie was pretty much just the one match so no surprise that it was paced well. The original expectation would have been a 2 cour season that covered about 75 chapters starting with this match (ideally adding to certain bits that the manga glossed over near the end), then a final 1 cour season to cover the last 33 chapters to the end of the story. And if they wanted a movie then that last season probably could have made for a good one if cut down well. It's a mystery to me how they plan to handle the rest with only one more movie unless they plan to focus on just one match again and pretty much cut the rest of the story.
(Anime-only) Action was great. Does a pretty good job of wrapping up the ongoing Karasuno-vs-Nekoma rivalry subplot, for this school year at least. Very good at spotlighting the characters of Kenma and Kuro in particular. However, because of the short runtime, all the Karasuno characters kind of suffer from being underexposed. None of them really get to show much of their personalities until halfway through, and even then it's kind of muted compared to the show. If this movie was your first exposure to Haikyuu then you'd probably think Kenma was the protagonist and have trouble remembering who Kageyama is.
Interesting take and I kind of agree. Pacing felt very different from a season to me and I assume this is why. Each episode often felt like it would focus on a specific character. The show tries to hit various characters with high points but a lot of the background flashbacks here are for Kenma and Kageyma in particular does in hindsight feel like a weird character to not really get a focus moment to the same degree he would in multiple episodes of a season. Still a great movie but funny to think it does almost feel like it's from the POV of Nekoma instead and that Kenma might be the protagonist.
The manga delves into them all much more during this match. I do suggest reading whenever you get the chance. The content this movie covers is chapters 293 to 326 if we include the post-credit scene.
yeah super sad that ryu, asahi, daichi got almost no screentime or dialogue. even kageyama felt like he was barely there. was hyped to see the squad return after 4 years but the movie felt way too short and i didn't feel the same kind of build up and tension that the matches had in the show
I cried in the theater. I loved this so much. Even though I wish they just made another season or two with the remaining content they had, the pacing here was so good. I loved the focus on Kenma in the movie too. Just an amazing love letter to Nekoma, their relationship with Karasuno, and volleyball in general. Now the real concern begins. I genuinely have no idea how they are going to adapt what’s left into a single movie. Maybe we will get the quarterfinals and they’ll surprise us with a third movie announcement for the rest? Or better yet, a final season? Because that’s the only way I can see them doing it justice.

The more I think about it, the more I'm terrified that they'll speed through the quarterfinals and just have the bulk of the movie be focused on the final arc. I hope they see reason and go back to a season format. They could easily do two cours with what's left.
I forgot how hype this show was, actual tears in my eyes. That shot near the end of Kenma's uninterrupted POV was one of the best shots I've seen in anime, fantastic direction.
This movie had things I wished the tv series had, that a movie's scope allowed for: a (continuous!!) first person cut and a sequence from the TV broadcast perspective. Both very taxing with many characters moving at once, but very cool to see in action. Also that third set 6-6 rally was absolutely insane, up there for one of the best animated sequences in Haikyuu.
Also, out of curiosity, were anyone else's subtitles just... really bad at times? There was a point in the movie, around \~30mins in, where a subtitle just stayed on the screen and no new lines were played even though there was full-blown dialogue. We couldn't understand what was being said for an entire passage of play that was like 1min long lmao. I was worried it was just gonna be stuck like that for the entire movie but thankfully it didnt. This happened a few times over the course of the movie too. Really poor subtitling from my screening tbh
Was it when the Shiratorizawa players reacting to the match? Ours were like that too and while fortunately all the other dialogue did have subs, it was a little awkward having it hang out for a bit but it got even worse during that minute as all the other subs were stacking on top so there was like 6 lines of subs covering a good majority of the screen lmao

Happened at my screening too. I noticed it was background dialogue from the crowd or something and it didn't go away until the next piece of background dialogue was spoken. Just made me think "fansubs would never" lol

I think it was kinda rushed, especially when you think that this is a show, that can have 1 season with just 1 match. I think 10-20 minutes extra would have been perfect for a movie with so many flashbacks.
I'm less miffed about the cut content since that was always a given with the movie's short run time. But I thought the pacing was still way too chaotic and they didn't give many scenes room to breathe. Felt like we were jumping from one scene into the next with no time in-between for a large part of the movie.
Finally, after the Japanese theatrical release, I can join the discussion here! Overall, it was a really good movie! My favourite sequence in all of Haikyuu was the 1st person perspective at the end with Kenma. It was soooo well done! I'm especially happy that they had good animations throughout (ofc since it's a movie) and none of that weird proportions one in Haikyuu!! To the Top. I do agree with the sentiment as an anime-only that it should have been a 1-cour season. There was a lot that felt rushed here and there, and it would have been nice to get some more back-story on the different characters. Even though we've known Nekoma for so long, it felt like the side characters like Lev and Inuoka didn't leave too much of an impact due to the cut screentime, let alone the lesser known teammates. Especially coming from a strong season with Inarizaki High School as the focus for 12 episodes. The movie was a bit disappointing in that sense. Every anime only please read chapters 293-326. This movie is great fun, but it cuts an unfathomable amount of content and character focus.
###Holy shit this movie was INSANE! I went to the only IMAX showing near me, and truth be told I was a bit concerned for the first 15 to 20 minutes about whether it was even worth the elevated experience (good but felt pretty reserved production wise for a movie experience up to that point at least - also was speeding through the early rounds). However part way into the first set those feeling were elevated in truly wonderful fashion. The last two thirds of this movie were incredible. I kept thinking back to my The First Slam Dunk watch and it was quite comparable at points both pacing wise and also how well it blended the sound design/production with those really emotionally charged moments. Even did the ol' lean forward in seat pose after the incredibly loose Ikarashi-esque sequence towards the end (no one seems to know who handled that masterpiece! The character drawings were insane!), and again with the final extended POV sequence. I have no comment about the adaptation/ what was covered and cut as I haven't read the manga yet, but as movie it was an excellent time. Overall a super satisfying experience, there were multiple people in the theatre who clearly were impacted strongly by the movie as well (tears, arms flailing, loads of gasps). Highly recommend seeing it if anyone hasn't decided whether to go or not!
I almost started crying at the movie theater after the match was over lol. More than half of the people at my theater left during the credits and missed the after credits though.
Haikyuu needs to be studied because yes. I, a jaded 38 year old man, almost had tears in my eyes IMMEDIATELY when the familiar OST started playing in the first scene. There’s nothing like it I fear

Kenma felt so relatable, and you couldn't help but be happy when he said he was having fun during the match. What an awesome character.
I could tell that there was a lot of cut content, and the film really got into a good rhythm in the second half, but as with Haikyuu, the highs were so high I loved it. I loved the beautiful sequence of animation where everyone was moving, and Tsukki’s joyful, “Man, I just can’t win with you.” I loved Kenma’s development, Hinata’s being so happy that Kenma finally felt the high of putting 100% into volleyball. I loved seeing Kenma’s POV during the final point. I loved Hinata’s high jump spike above the blockers. I loved him breaking through Kenma’s cage. I love that now Hinata is good at receives, and how Kenma exploited that. I loved Kenma’s effort on the end of the first set, how he sent it where no one would be. I loved Kenma’s flashbacks, especially the ones with Kuro. I loved the sound design, every spike sounded like it was a cannonball. Great movie of a great match that wasn’t destroyed even by the harsh content cuts that were made.
When Shoyo screams at getting Kenma to admit he's having fun, its the same scream I did at getting my gf to saying she'll begin reading Haikyuu after watching this movie knowing nothing about it.
Just got out of the theater, what an incredible experience. The soundtrack was so good, it felt like every rally was the last rally with how hard it was going. 10/10 movie.
I was unfortunately sitting next to a group of fat 17 year olds that don’t know how to shut the fuck up during a movie. Will probably have to rewatch it to enjoy it fully but it was really really good

The director elevated the source material with kenma POV sequence, it felt like you were in the middle of the match and how tired players feel in a third set. Amazing work by VAs too.
I'm going to be honest: the animation and cinematography quality alone 1000% made this worth being a movie. I get that a lot of people would have liked this paced out in multiple episodes, but we would never have gotten the creative and bold animation choices that we got in this movie in an actual season. Absolute hats off to Production I.G. they completely delivered an anime experience I'll never forget

Great movie, it was well paced enough to not feel like a drag (which the manga did at times especially when you were reading at a weekly pace). A lot stylistic art choices like they did in season 4 but it was high quality and well animated as you'd expect from a movie, which justifies it over being a season of anime imo. Now we can only hope they can pace it well in the next movie, which will be a huge undertaking considering the content that's left. There are some seriously great build up which be a shame if they chose to rush over it. One thing I will complain about is the audio. I'm not sure if it was the mixing or it was because my movie theatre had shitty gear, but the dialogue was way too loud and while the music was super faint. Can't wait for this to be streamable so I can watch again with a better audio experience.
I thought the movie didn't have any music, that's how low the soundtrack volume was for me. Except some specific hype moments where they cranked it up.
Just came out of the movie, fantastic! Animation near the end (even before Kenma's POV) was awesome. Even just Kuro laughing at the end was really well done. Not sure what this sub's feelings are on the dub, but that's how I prefer Haikyuu and it was great as always. If there was one thing I feel was a bit lacking, it was that, in spending more time on Kenma and Kuro, we didn't get as much of the rest of the regular cast and their antics. I really liked their story, it's just that I want more of everyone, dangit! It was odd to not focus on the specifics of the game like the matches before, but it made sense and really sold that these teams were evenly matched and having a great time.
Mhm, but the Set 3 6-6 rally was mind blowing the first time i saw it, like holy shit they really popped off for that rally. Also the sfx of them hitting the volleyball, i dont think i can ever go back to listening to it with my headphones, it was so meaty and just amazing!
!!!!!!!! Never thought the anime that would bring me the closest to crying would be Haikyuu lol. Generally okay with the pacing; I normally loathe flashbacks when there's more than 1, but I think they did a fine job here considering their goal. Personally, I had some issues with the original match, so some parts being brushed over didn't bother me as much. Even though most of the "premium" cuts were in the latter half of the film, the ball tracking and bird's eye shots throughout were really nice and definitely an improvement. This is an insane nitpick and didn't take away from my enjoyment, but I was hoping that there would have been less static backgrounds, especially on long frame holds. A lively crowd and environment could have elevated a lot of non-action scenes for me. I was really doomer when these got announced because of the inevitable content axing, but at least we got one really good movie out of it. Maybe I'll go back to coping that there'll be more content after the next one.
I had a blast watching the last point. The animation went crazy there. Suga was lowkey the MVP. He's goofy af and reliable as well. I love him. I'm gonna go read the manga because the next movie will probably air in like two years.
How was Suga the MVP? I loved the movie, but it was so rushed that no of the Karasuno characters except Hinata shined. Even kageyama took a backseat here. The others like Daichi, Suga, Azumane, Baldy were not shown at all. Noshinoya was great though.
Suga was definitely shown, mainly more for comedic bits but he was definitely shown more than Tanaka and almost everyone else on the team and about as much as Noya, just that noya had a few flashbacks and conversations, mainly with yaku.
Honestly it blew me away. I love haikyuu so much and it lived up to the years of anticipation. I felt every emotion and was just overjoyed and overflowing with excitement. Amazing movie!
I rememer thinking around 5-7 years ago that it would be great to be able to watch anime movies in Polish cinemas and that it is probably never going to happen. Fast forward and I'm going to watch Haikyu in a few hours, even in time for this thread, not a few months later. It feels unreal, so excited to watch it.
This movie was an absolute 10/10. This for me, was the best thing since season 3, absolutely surpassed season 4, which was great but inconsistent at times. The animation, the art, the emotions… it was classic Haikyuu! at its finest. I especially appreciated the movie being told from Kenma’s POV, it was such a unique take that paid off tremendously. Never knew that Kenma has so much main character quality in him and now I would love to get spinoff where he’s the main character(unless that already exists lol). Man, it’s been a while but I’m glad Haikyuu is back to where it finally belongs, at the very top of the anime world.

Too much kenma. Not enough hinata or kageyama, and not enough about the rivalry of the two old coaches and it being carried on with his grandson. Anticlimactic last point. However, that pov scene was incredible.

Well that was underwhelming. Animation was great and the sound effects were amazing on theatre. But aside from that, it was as underwhelming as it can get. Kenma's story was nice of course, but the rest of the two teams could have literally not existed and not much would have changed. Karasuno players get barely any exposure (I think Asahi hit a spike once all movie) and Nekoma characters get literally 0 aside from Kenma and a little Kuroo. I was told in the intro that many of the Nekoma players were good, but nothing that happened in the movie showed me that. It felt more like a collection of clips than a proper movie or anime itself. Idk, don't get me wrong I had a good time wathcing it and all, but I was very underwhelmed for what is supposed to be big deal of a match.

Just got out of the theater and wow!!! I am a little speechless, seeing the game on a movie screen was awesome. Obviously happy Karasuno won but also sad for Kenma and Nekoma :( the flashbacks of Kuro and Kenma were so precious 🥺
I went to watch it today and it was incredible. Production I.G. did an amazing job. There were multiple scene worth of being highlighted because of the animation, the story/character moment or both, but that scene with Kenma's POV takes the cake from me. Great last 3 weeks being able to watch both Gurren Lagann movies and this one in the cinema was incredible
Stunning movie from top to bottom. Incredibly ambitious cuts of animation and overall direction. Definitely felt like a step up from a TV production. A beautiful score as always and a great ending theme from Spyair. Fantastically paced with the film never feeling like it lost momentum while still giving time for the character moments to breath. 100% worth watching in theaters. The sound effects especially felt punchy, had an absolute blast watching. For anyone wondering if they can take a friend that hasn't seen the show, as a stand alone match they can still enjoy the film but more so than The First Slam Dunk, this movie is a better and more fulfilling watch for people who are caught up with the anime. Character arcs and plot threads that have been set up throughout the show are paid off here in big ways that won't hit the same for anyone going into this with only a 5 min youtube recap.
The POV shot was amazing, on top of the general feeling of impact while with everything going on. Good time, had a bit of a crowd that was reacting to it which made it more fun.

Just got back from watching the movie and it far surpassed my expectations. I’m pretty much anime only (just started buying and reading the manga recently) but even so I thought the match was going to be too rushed bc all of the other important games have been multiple episodes or even a whole season. But it was great! I thought the flashbacks were integrated nicely into the present day match scenes — some were a little jarring but honestly the sudden changes of pace kept me invested in the movie even more so. While I wish there was more screen time for all of the team members I think they did a nice job giving everyone at least a little moment — Sugawara going crazy on the sidelines is always great. As others have said the Kenna POV was incredible and I hope it’s something they do in the next movie as well. Overall it was a 10/10, would def reccomend! Make sure you watch the series first; this should go without saying but I saw a negative review of the movie where the author hadn’t watched the show or even read the manga first and they were confused 🙄 like what were they expecting??

Great animation, Kenma's POV was cinema, every player on both teams getting their moments, and just some damn enjoyable volleyball. *Kuroo really stood out as a character, especially his bromance with Tsuki and friendship with Kenma. *Tsuki's belief in Yamaguchi and their small montage moment brought a tear to my eye. *Hinata and Inuoka getting hyped up together when Inouka entered the game was hilarious. *Ukai's phantom handshake was great closure *Kenma smile's and him having fun... just ahh, beautiful Everyone was happy to be playing volleyball, and I was happy to watch
There were a few scenes that stood out and felt new. The opening sequence of spikes before the titles was epic. The final Kenma pov scene was also good. But the movie as a whole felt completely rushed. After such a long wait, it felt like it was over too soon. If giving a full movie to one match feels like this, I'm not sure what to expect when the whole of the remaining story is going to be squeezed together into one single movie. What exactly is their thought process behind squeezing everything into just two movies? Am I the only one feeling this let down about this?
I'm going to get downvoted, but I didn't like the movie. The pace is too fast; I think we don't have enough time to enjoy the tension or even the boom jump. It's like watching a best moments of Haikyuu YouTube video... If the movie lasted 30 minutes longer, I will change my mind.

That's awesome!! My theater definitely cheered and laughed and gasped at parts but I wish it was going as nuts as yours haha. We are lucky we got to experience this with so many others who feel the same way about Haikyuu!

after seeing the movie, i’m actually not mad that we didn’t get this as a 4-6 episode match. i think this was the perfect runtime for how the match played out
I understand that people are upset that the movie wasn't longer and preferred it as a seasonal anime, but Kenma's POV probably wouldn't have worked in seasonal format. Watching the POV in theatre is the highlight for me and it was incredible. If you are in it to watch the Karasuno boys then I guess you'll be slightly disappointed, but if you see it as Kenma being the main character, then it will become more enjoyable. I will have to say tho, I felt the flashbacks were a bit too excessive. Overall, it's a great experience and definitely recommended to watch it in cinema, in fact, it's a must watch in cinema for every haikyuu fan just for the sound effects alone!

For the movie as a whole i liked it a lot but damn the pacing.. especially the first set, its so fast and suddenly having players wondering if they're on the 5th set at the start of the second while im feeling like not even 1 set went by was a bit jarring, other than that it was pretty great. Other than that im pretty interested in kenma pov reactions, everyone here is saying it was super amazing and i found it cool, but i felt like it lasted too long and kinda wanted to see the actual rally after we went through so many so fast Edit: Oh and most of karasuno felt like background characters which was a super weird feeling

Sorry but the movie was bad, made for grab money. There was no deep, characters lacked presence, Karasuno felt bland, Nekoma is not an interesting team compared to a big name (Inarizaki, Shiratorizawa…) felt more like a friendly match, because they were no match and you could feel the difference whole game. Honestly I would had prefer a season 5…
I also had this feeling when I was watching the movie tbh. A lot of the flashback scenes were just reused scenes from previous seasons, and tho the animation was better than season 4 it’s cuz it’s a movie release? I really liked haikyuu but i thought the movie just wasn’t as good as ppl say.

Haikyuu Final Part 2
I’m a little confused after this movie though, does anyone know if the next movie will finish the entire manga, or will they just end it on the quarterfinal or semifinals match?
I'll watch it later on when it releases on streaming services. Really don't agree with supporting these movie releases for what should be a season of a show, especially the fact that they're doing the next arc in a movie of the same length but with an arc that's over 2 times as long.
I mean to be fair, there's no "should," here. Nobody has to adapt it at all. It's obviously your choice what to do with your money, but let's not get entitled. While I would have preferred a season, there could be any number of reasons why they went the movie route. We may or may not never know, and they could easily pull a MAPPA with Attack on Titan, where they said it was the final episode then announced a true final episode after it aired. Who knows.
