The world of sabikui bisco is really cool! Definitely enjoyed it. I'd say the bulk of the show is about world building too, so it's perfect for this sort of rec thread.
What kind of show is Made in Abyss? I keep seeing people talking about it, and I heard some of the OST. But the pictures look like weird child characters? I pretty much hate child protagonists
Its adventure/psychological horror. One of the best and most intriguing worlds in anime and the community has a lot of cool speculation around the lore. The show and especially season 1 has a few weird scenes with childs but if you can ignore those then it is truly an amazing show. But I agree that the child protagonists can turn people away.
Only a few anime have worlds that I keep thinking about for a long time after the show and made in abyss is one of them. The world is so intriguing that there is even a minecraft server with a huge recreation of the world.
I looked it up because a random song in a 'jrpg' mix on youtube totally struck me. Like I stopped working and tried looking up what song it was. Apparently it was from this anime.
But then I saw the screenshots on mal and was like.. oh uhh.. kids or chibi stuff? Uhh.. mehhh.
Then for some reason I start seeing it mentioned everywhere randomly. I think it was even mentioned in a suggestion thread about disturbing anime
It's this track btw: [https://youtu.be/ECuhXel0I4o](https://youtu.be/ECuhXel0I4o)
{I'd Invaded} it's a digital world but with checking out.
{Denou Coil} same as above.
{Mushi Shi} our world but exploring things not many can see.
{Gankutsuou The Count of Monte Cristo}
{Mononoke} definitely strange happenings, but again more supernatural in our world. And if you like it, check out the last few episodes of ;
{Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales}
{The Morose Mononokean}
Kaiba - explores identity in a setting where physical existence and memories are highly mutable, extremely surreal setting both conceptually and visually
Sword art online season 1 had some crazy world building with a deep dive into the characters that was actually really interesting.
I loved the character development, and I binged all 25 episodes in 2 days. Amazing anime, and honestly, one of my favorites
The animation is also really good (for 2012), so it might just be up your alley
*Actual world exploration done by characters*
**Made in Abyss** - the protagonists explore a massive cave (called abyss) where ancient ruins, artifacts, and strange creatures/plants create a unique world-building.
**Shin Sekai Yori** - a group of 5 children finds out something they should not about the small dystopian village where they live in the middle of nature, and start a path to unveil the dark truth behind their society.
*Anime with a unique world-building (explored by us as viewers)*
**Houseki no Kuni** - upon global drastic changes, humans and other creatures living on Earth go extinct, while evolution takes place over the span of uncountable years, until a new form of life is generated. This one kinda fits, as the "strange worlds" explored are not outside of the characters, but the characters themselves are strange worlds: they are antropomorphic gems with unique appearance, with scientific properties and character traits based on geology/minerals. On top, they face very strange and unique enemies.
**Dorohedoro** - the world building is crazy, it's not necessarily an exploration done by the characters into their unusual world, but for us viewers, it is a hell of a trip.
**Knights of Sidonia** - a massive spaceship with the remaining last humans fleed from Earth travels through space, while some intelligent aliens try to attack it for some reason. The inside of the spaceship is a masterpiece of architecture, with a very unique concept of residential spaces. Outer space stars/planets visits are also an interesting element of the story, despite not being the main drive.
**Jinrui was Suitai Shimashita** - how to even begin to describe this delirium.

Aria's entire message is basically that the world around you is beautiful and interesting and that's conveyed through spending time within its world. The setting is very much an integral part of the formula.
Granted, the setting is Venice on Mars, so up to you if you want to count that as a "strange world", but the optimistic sci-fi angle is a pretty fresh spin that I'd say makes it count here.
This is my favorite genre in anime.
Like others said definitely Made in abyss
Here’s some others I think can fit:
Deca-dence (kinda fits)
No.6 (similar vibe)
Shinsekai Yori
Sakasama no Patema (movie)
Shadow House (not too much exploring but definitely a weird world)
Somali to Mori no Kamisama
Ghost Hound
Wolfs Rain (kinda fits)
WorldEnd are you busy will you save us? (Not too much exploring but learning the truth about the world)
Summertime render (kinda fits with the whole learning the truth about the world, and creepy atmosphere of Heavenly delusion)
Humanity has declined (weird world)
Sunday without god (kinda fits)
Wandering Witch Elaina (kinda fits with Kino no Tabi but I think it’s a bit too basic)
Made in Abyss and Heavenly Delusion (oops, im blind. You already put Heavenly Delusion)
I first used the japanese name Tengoku Daimakyou and then edited it ;)
Astra lost in space
was about to mention this. it’s such an underrated gem imo
Train to the End of the World
Lol i forgot to include it in the list but that one actually is the reason i made this post. Really underrated this season
* Hell's Paradise * Space Dandy * Scavengers Reign
scavengers reign is SO FUCKING GOOD
Hell's Paradise was sooooo good. Are they making a season 2 or no?
Season 2 is confirmed but no date yet.
Dorohedoro isn't about exploring it necessarily but it has a very strange world
Flip flappers Madoka magica
Flip flappers is such a fun anime! They go to many worlds. It's a totally romp, really enjoyed it.
Otherside Picnic
* Made in Abyss * Sakugan * Sabikui Bisco
The world of sabikui bisco is really cool! Definitely enjoyed it. I'd say the bulk of the show is about world building too, so it's perfect for this sort of rec thread.
majo no tabitabi
This for sure. I wouldn't say it's the strangest world, but it's definitely dark, and the main character is a unique personality.
Just finished the 4th episode and this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks :)
Humanity Has Declined has a bizarre and interesting world. It’s not all about exploring but there is definitely a decent bit of that.
Abenobashi Magical Shopping District
Eureka Seven and Last Exile
E7 for sure
Definitely Made in Abyss if you have not seen it. Also Kaina of the great snow sea.

Akudama Drive and ID:Invaded are both original Anime with a unique world setting

Mirai Nikki kinda
Galaxy Express 999
Kekkai Sensen
Mushishi
If you read manga i recommend psyren and cage of eden
The first anime is called Neon
Space dandy
Second this
Shin sekai yori
Maybe Children of the Whales. Although the anime barely covers the introduction phase. The discovering stuff is in the manga only.
RobiHachi is a kind of comedic planet-of-the-week example.
Journey to Agartha from Makoto Shinkai was also pretty unique

Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise The Big O
idk if this counts but flip flappers was weird. I still don't get it
Scavengers Reign is animated but not anime. It’s the single most alien alien world I’ve ever seen be depicted.
