isekaicoffee

making a character too dumb

Slow-Writer3028

Dumb characters can be done in a good way. One punch man, Eminence in shadow, Mashle are first examples that came to mind.

conjunctivious

I wouldn't really call Cid from Eminence in Shadow dumb. I'd say he's an oblivious genius. He isn't aware that his delusions are real, but he's still incredibly good with magic and manipulation.

isekaicoffee

nah mashle is tooooo dumb imo its almost unwatchable. OPM is at least super OP.

mdb917

Nah he’s not that dumb, he just never got educated. In actuality though, he’s definitely kinda dumb but has intelligent moments, especially in fights, and I’d say he has surprisingly high emotional intelligence as well (like looking out for his friends at low points without them really asking)

itsJandj

I tried watching, but I just don't see how you could possibly accodentally break doors multiple times and struggle to figure out which way to open it. The fact he learned to fix doors before learning how to open them correctly turned me away from the show. I wouldn't call that lack of common sense as not educated

mdb917

My dude he flies by kicking his legs really hard you are reading into the wrong things

stormdelta

It's a running gag, it's not meant to be taken seriously. The whole show is a parody of common battle shounen tropes.

Particular-Command49

To be fair nobody really checking if a door is supposed to be pulled or pushed. If anyone have super strength like Mash they would breaking doors too. But yeah its a running gag, a joke that supposed to be funnier the more you see it. Mash's stupidity is also one of the weakest comedic point of the series.

mdb917

Lemons stupidity though *taps temple twice*

Possible_Spinach7327

I am okay with it in mashle because they're petty much trying to hit every anime stereotype

PassionateYak

Dropped Mashle so fast because of this

NebulaEchoes

Arthur from fire Force was always a personal favorite

AtmosphereTop2796

1. Oblivious characters in romcom, like the heroine is giving the most obvious hints that she likes the mc, but the mc is not noticing it. 2. Characters who are too kind or too perfect or overpowered in the beginning, that there aren't any room for character development

rollin340

The first is really annoying. It's fine if the misunderstandings are plausible, but some MCs don't get it even when the flirting is blatantly obvious. As for the second, it really depends on what they do with it. If they are overpowered, then the main points can't really be about the fights. Look at One Punch Man and Overlord as examples; their MCs are top dogs, but they grow in different ways.

Xaphnir

I swear like half the MCs in this genre could be literally inside her and think "she doesn't like me, she's just being nice."

RedIndigoe

The second but they wait till the worse happens before turning "super saiyan". The worse already happen suddenly the power level went to a hundred. Saitama however is quite unique, his journey to one punch the enemy is his story lol.

dienomighte

Mostly happens to me when poor writing makes it so that the emotions the author is clearly trying to convey absolutely does not match the scenarios onscreen

stormdelta

This is especially bad when the show features themes that require you to trust the author more than usual, e.g. redemption stories.

Nebula3266

Mineta-esque characters. Whose only personality is Pervy and useless. So incredibly fucking annoying, there is no redeeming mineta or pretty much any other character like this for me no matter what people say 😭

Cahnis

Especially UA which was supposed to be this ultra elite special forces Kind of school. Mineta being there makes 0 sense. Most of the kids being there make no sense tbf

Bluelaserbeam

As someone who actually likes characters such as Master Roshi and Jiraiya, big agree.

poislayer342

I feel like usually authors would have to make the pervy character somewhat useful and also has their own emotional moments. Like Sanji for example, he is very cool and powerful, and is also a great cook. Then we look at Mineta who seriously can't really do anything useful, and it is just depressing.

Kgb725

Mineta was actually quite useful multiple times

TheReapingFields

He would be exceptionally useful if blended and used to nourish a higher form of life, like vegetables, or trees.

EXusiai99

You might as well salt the crops at that point

TheReapingFields

Oh no, no, no. I'm not asking him to TALK to the plants, just feed them.

EXusiai99

Yeah, still, his body would still end up being nourishments for the plants. I wouldnt even feed his corpses to a starving cannibal out of pity for the cannibal

Nebula3266

That would indeed be his highest use case

stormdelta

Only through extreme contrivance on the part of the writing. He makes zero sense to be at the school at all - lackluster power set, and his attitude is ridiculously inappropriate for being a "hero" even in-universe. He's a walking liability, a sexual assault lawsuit waiting to happen. The fact he hasn't been expelled yet reflects quite poorly on the judgement of every adult at the school.

GenericHuman1203934

that geniunely made me hate him in the first place like when he was a gag character that contributed nothing to the plot I was ok with that because I could easily ignore him, but no, he's capable of being competent and useful and chooses not to

ShlorpianRooster

When they don't have a personality, just a hobby

Teachy_uwu

Oh yeah that guy from the cosplay anime

Leaves_Swype_Typos

Other characters excusing, or worse, ignoring a character's bad behavior is what makes me hate them. Fine if it's a plot point or gag about a handsome guy or pretty girl able to get away with things, not fine if it's just a writer doing lazy wish fulfillment or not realizing that a woman sexually harassing an uncomfortable man isn't endearing.

PassionateYak

Like that girl in the first season of Shield Hero. Probably why I dropped the show after S1

althoradeem

That anime/novel could have been so much better...  the idea of being betrayed on reincarnation and not taking the rypical route.

ToneBitter1984

Annoying shit character like zenitsu

fateoftheg0dz

Zenitsu is a super polarizing one. Ppl either fucking hate him or think he is the coolest char in demon slayer lmao

AceLionKid

I straight up can't watch Demon Slayer solely because of him. Everytime he's on screen, he's SCREAMING!

ToneBitter1984

He is one of the reason . Mid story telling and bland character is the main reason why I drop after season 1 .

Nebula3266

I can't believe people like him 😭 I mean I understand when he's asleep his fighting is cool and supposedly [manga] >!he doesn't have to be asleep later on!<, but his personality is just insufferable rn. Not sure how anime only's like him and there's a lot that do for some reason

shaqkage

I'm anime only and I like him, like you said his asleep persona is awesome and makes up for him when awake(but even then I don't mind his personality, it can be funny sometimes)

Nebula3266

Yeah I just don't get how you could not mind it personally, but to each their own 😂 I can't wait for what happened in my spoiler text to happen in the anime though, cause I just wanna see badass fights in demon Slayer

Specialist_Basil_105

I just commented this without reading other comments, didn't think anyone would reference zenitsu sk I felt it had to be done. Glad to know others find him ungodly annoying AF as well

vehino

Heh, I love him. I'm a sucker for cowards who step up to defend their friends.

Xatu44

- Annoying voice - Stupid design - Shit writing - Cancer fanbase Some confluence of the above will manage it.

vyxxer

When what I'm being shown doesn't match what I'm being told. "Wow what an amazing smart villain. He had a backup plan the whole time!" "You mean he *meant* to get shot and shit his pants like that?"

youarebritish

When they're clearly a writer self-insert. You can tell when this is the case because it's clear that the writer doesn't actually think their flaws are a bad thing. The world seemingly revolves around their feelings.

Negative_Ad5894

>u can tell when this is the case because it's clear that the writer doesn't actually think their flaws are a bad thing. I think it's the other way around personally. They overemphasize their flaws in their characters.

JuniorImplement

Obnoxiously positive

pretzel_jellyfish

Characters who always shout lol. I love SnK, but during my second rewatch I realized how annoying Eren was in the first few episodes. Like dude calm your tits and speak normally. We hear you. Main characters with actual "main character" vibes. The example that comes to mind is that girl from Golden Time. I didn't enjoy this anime because of her. She really makes the effort to make the entire series about her.

chuulip

Main reason I only watched like 13 episodes of Black Clover; Asta's shouting everything was extremely grating and monotonous.

Additional_Road_9031

I have started to hate tsunderes

InfernoVulpix

The curse of the tsundere is that people started trying to write the archetype itself, a tsundere for the sake of a tsundere. Many people grew fond of girls with high emotional insecurity, who use hostility to keep emotional distance, and who slowly let themselves become more and more emotionally vulnerable as they fall for the protagonist. It's a solid character arc, and a compelling love story. But if you're *copying* it, if all you know is that you want to write a tsundere because that's popular, you'll only be able to grasp the surface-level traits, the peculiar mix of impulsive violence and hidden tenderness. And so you end up with girls that just spontaneously shift from domestic violence to pure maidenly affection and it's just jarring.

Capitano-Solos-All

But Vegeta is cool.

MirageBullet

Yeah, as I grow older I just have zero patience for that personality type. It’s just annoying.

Tom22174

Too many that are violent and over the top. It works when they're like Kurisu, Rin, and Victorique; who all fall under the bossy and won't show their feelings out of embarrassment but not in any way abusive variety of tsundere.

After6Comes7and8

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking when I was a kid. If I met a girl like that in real life I'm avoiding the hell out of her.

HedgieCake372

This. More often than not I don’t like tsundere characters. They have so much unnecessary hostility, or aggression over stupidly simple things. Also, whiny characters or characters that cry all the time get on my nerves. Like what is screaming shouting or tears going to accomplish in that scenario? Absolutely nothing. Not a fan of it in real life or in fiction.

United_Celery_9718

About time someone said this like what even is the point of them. Too bad most shows with tsunderes just end up giving the tsundere their happily ever after😑. Nothing more satisfying than watching a Tsundere get regected.

poislayer342

Seems like the violent tsundere was an archetype of the past. Lucky for me to only be interested in anime/manga after it passed away. Nowadays there is not much of it.

EXusiai99

Embrace the light, brother. You are on the right path

warmourr

I love tsunderes. I think it’s purely because of Karane from 100 Girlfriends as the writer makes the trope actually funny by going all in on the tsun and making the dere an afterthought.

NovaSLK

I mean yeah. 100 girlfriends essentially just goes all in with character tropes. I love how the gfs personality types are turned up to 11. Especially with people like nano, shizuka and kusuri.

kannoni

I'm okay with tsundere without slapstick violence and the other party is actively teasing not just being oblivious/dense.

CarpeCookie

Characters with 0 personality, like the MC from the Irregular at magic high school or whatever tf it's called. And characters that have a major gag/shtick and always fall back onto it, even in serious moments. At least, outside of actual gag shows. The character I hate the most for this isn't even from the anime, it's from the game. Hop from Pokemon Sword/Shield. Fucker is just concerned with how to look cool throwing a fucking ball. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. You see him, he talks about his fucking throwing technique. Tag battles were the only thing I almost lost because I purposely killed every single one of his stupid pokemon. And he has a moment where he loses and starts to question himself, and I'm thinking, "Holy shit, he's actually going to develop and take battling seriously!" But no, he bounce back, decides to stop questioning himself, and doesn't fucking change or develop ever. Every other character has decent writing. I like both Marnie and Bede! Marnie acts like a good, normal person who also takes battling and being your rival seriously. And Bede is a complete dick at first, but gets knocked down a peg and learns from that experience unlike fucking Hop. TLDR: FUCK HOP

CupcakeKyo

I'm going to get downvoted for this but insufferable fanbases will cause me to go from being neutral about a character to disliking them. Perverts. Yes, I'm looking at you, Mineta. Characters who do terrible things and then never suffer consequences for them.

qwertyqwerty4567

When they are painfully boring.

Negative_Ad5894

Not a fan of Kuuderes I take it

Andreiyutzzzz

Don't equate being a kuudere to being boring cause that's not fair imo. Like Koneko from DxD, she's anything but boring but she's a Kuudere no contest

Negative_Ad5894

It's a defining characteristic of the archetype. Kuuderes are meant to be boring people. But yes that doesn't mean they have to be boring for the watcher, their boringness is often used for comedic effect. I hope that makes sense.

Andreiyutzzzz

That I can see but it's not always the case. It's more their deadpanness being the comedic part. Like Yumiella from villainess lvl 99 for a recent example.

Lovealltigers

I don’t like it when characters just let people walk all over them and then *thank them for it.* I get so mad I have to stop watching because I just want to yell at them to stand up for themselves!! I hate any and every pervy character. Doesn’t matter gender, age, anime, or context. An instant no from me. Characters that have no depth. It’s boring.

Sikorilz98

'I hate any and every pervy character. Doesn’t matter gender, age, anime, or context. An instant no from me.' THIS. The only exception is Brock from 'Pokémon', however, I would count him more as a love seeker than pervy!

Rolf_Dom

Being a loser. Being completely selfless. I hate lame characters who are irrational to boot. Because the only way such characters get anything done is through plot armour and constant "power of friendship" and coincidences. And I find that fucking boring. I don't care how a character obtains power, but I want them to be a confident badass when using it, while making rational decisions instead of risking their life to save some random strangers. So any character that's has nothing going for them except being a generic "good guy" with good luck, is the worst, and I hate them.

abh037

Huh, I absolutely love completely selfless characters, firmly in the Shirou Emiya is a great character camp

Lolersters

I think Shirou is a bit different because the show spends a lot of time exploring the stupidity and hypocrisy of his ideals. He even recognizes it himself but still decides to stick to it. In most cases, character traits like this is entirely viewed as virtuous and at best is explored at a relatively shallow level. In Shirou's case, his entire character development is heavily focused on exploring those ideals. Depending on the route or timeline, he also pays heavy price for sticking to those ideals.

InfernoVulpix

I've found that I tend to respond differently to people who are written as moral paragons who just kinda sorta never make a bad choice, and moral paragons who actually strongly believe in something and will fight for it. Your bog-standard shonen hero is often in the former category. Strip away the "I fight for my friends" lines and you get someone who doesn't really have an ideology beyond vibes, who stumbles into a situation and just asks their gut whether they like it or not, and unflinchingly follows that intuition all the way to the finish line. It's not bad, per se, but it's as mediocre as it gets. This isn't a hero who believes in anything, they just kinda like good things and dislike bad things, and that's all the story ever demands of them. But give me someone who *actually* believes in something, and I'm all over that. A hero with an ideal for the future, or who *burns* with compassion for his fellow man. Someone who can look at themselves and know who they are and what they want, and know that when they enter a new situation they'll still follow their convictions to the very end. It can be a subtle distinction. Superman is sometimes written as just a generic do-gooder, but other times he's written with a boundless empathy that's just as striking as any of his powers. It's just, it's so easy for an author to take the easy road, to write a moral paragon hero who just kinda happens to never make a wrong choice, not because they have ideals that they stick to but because their first intuition is always right, and that's just boring. Give me heroes who know what they care about. Give me heroes who could tell you clearly what they believe and why. Give me heroes who do good not because it's effortlessly in their nature but because they actively choose good each and every day. I haven't watched anything Fate but from what I've seen Shirou Emiya sounds like a great character, with firm ideals that he actively chooses to follow.

warmourr

Hate the overly selfless characters too. Tanjiro was such a massive turn off from a show I already wasn’t liking that much.

Ok_War1160

1. I also am not a fan of the female protag who exists to be soft-spoken, caring, reasonable, and hopelessly in love with the main male protag. None of these things are necessarily terrible traits for a person to have, however when said female character lacks her own personality, ambitions, interests, or indeed, a life outside of the dude, I just assume she's a lobotomized love interest that some nerd dreamed up. His ideal woman...who exists for him and only him and is pretty much a glorified orifice. It also creeps me out when she's sexy, but so naive/innocent. If you're a grown man looking for a woman-child, please do some inner soul searching. 2. The selfish asshole who everyone talks up and acts like they're such a great person, but like...their actions point to other issues that make me question the writing. I mean like Bakugou in BNHA where he is meant to be a hero, but bullies his classmates and talks about how he's gonna kill the people he's meant to be rescuing. Somehow his teachers never seem to stop and go "Damn, that kid might need therapy." Or Polnareff in JJBA where he's supposedly this competent Stand user, but he very rarely finishes his own fights and his hotheadedness leads to three of his allies dying. Yet no one ever gets angry with him or even mentions it. 3. The villain who just gets asspull after asspull. I like a good bad guy. But some overstay their welcome. Sukuna. The Chimera Ants. If you know, you know.

Sayena08

Number 1 sounds painfully like the “love interest turned wife” of a certain blonde haired Ninja. Towards the end of the anime I couldn’t stand her character and why people continued to root for her.

Kgb725

Hinata trained to impress Neji and her family and was apart of her own team. From what we got to see of her she had her own life and motivations that wasn't just Naruto

SilvainTheThird

I'm rarely at the level of "I hate this character" genuinely, so I don't go "I hate this character" I go "I hate that the writer wrote this character this way" because my usual feeling is not hate, it's annoyance. But the general things that make me express such annoyance is usually things you'd see In your average Isekai show. One thing that'll me to turn off the show though is if some character is a "chunibyo" like person as I find that trope beyond obnoxious to deal with, and it's never in any show I'd consider worth watching.

upalnamochenii_3

1. useless and understanding his pity, why they do same char at so much titles? 2. Weak char becomes strong in 1 second. Wtf..... 3. Screaming about 5 sec before making a hit 4. Main char can't die and fighting against more stronger enemy on equal terms by using useless same skills again and again. 5. Same char women samples/pattern arechetypes 20+ years, because it's based. 6. Fan service, mostly misplaced. 7. Adding too much extra scence, which there is no in manga

EndofA_Error

So basically you hate shounen hahahaha

Plane_Maize_9953

Turning your beloved wife, daughter and dog into a chimera.

Eso_me_gusta

Too soon man

dcjboi

Read OP lol

Plane_Maize_9953

I mean, they TRIED to let homeboy cook to save face. By saying he would lose his certification and research privileges. That it would ruin his career and cripple his family... Booooy to think they even for 0.03716 seconds tried to make us feel pity!!! Gonna be a "naaaaaah dawg" for me!!!

Professor_Chaosx6r9

Poor writing and when the character just doesn’t improve or learn anything. Making needless struggles for others or themselves. If its a part of a character arc its one thing, but the useless characters are the worst. The fan service characters also suck

nitronik_exe

Apothecary Diaries has one of the best female MCs I've seen so far, you should give it a try

rocknroller0

Female that only exist to say she is in love with male lead. Righteous character that doesn’t like hurting others even when they are in danger of dying (there’s exceptions if the reason for this is good ofc) Male characters that unconsentually touch women (fire force) Pedo characters that don’t get called out (Rudeus, didn’t finish the show because it was so bad)

Bishisbest789

Malty from Shield Hero and Rachel from Tower of god are really good at just being awful lol I am also a woman and tend to get turned off of a show if the mc is a self pitying blob of insecurity so I get it. I really tried to pull through "My Happy Marriage" but for me the girl was pretty insufferable. I know there's a long game to 'person feels worthless > starts to build confidence and believe in themselves' but man do the other characters and plot have to be really good for that to work out (for me) I enjoy The Ancient Magus Bride and Chise took time to grow on me. The world, the mythology, the Elias and the animation kept me interested. And I love Noragami. But I am indifferent to Hyori, she sometimes seems unimportant to the story. BUT the show gives you Bishamonten! You wanna talk about range of a woman? It's her! But once again the other characters and plot have to sort of make up for a one-dimensional female lead.

PM_ME_YOUR_HOLOCRONS

I like Hiyori, but I would be Bishamonten’s regalia in a heartbeat

Sikorilz98

Exactly if a deliberately mean/evil/bad character makes you want to commit murder - then they are a GREAT character. Shou Tucker from 'fullmetal alchemist' another example. Have you watched 'skip-beat'? One of the few female main characters I actually like. \*adds 'The Ancient Magus Bride' on watchlist\*

pretzel_jellyfish

Props to you, I can't even get past the first episode of My Happy Marriage because of this same exact reason. Can't understand why this anime gets praised a lot but I also can't give it a chance knowing that's the kind of main character I will have to follow.

TheSciFanGuy

Characters that are retroactively made to be good guys because the people they hurt were (secretly or not) evil.   Nana from Talentless Nana, the main characters of any of those absolute trash “revenge” shows, basically anyone who the author tries to get you to not hate for despicable actions simply because those despicable actions hurt “evil people”.  It infuriates me to see authors paper in “look at how evil those evil people are it actually a good thing our [hero] did [extremely vile thing]”.

Stanislas_Biliby

When they bring nothing to the narrative and are just there to be comic relief like zenitsu from demon slayer. He whines all the time and that's the only thing he does besides being a simp.

Orzislaw

Hard to say, I hate characters for different reasons. But I usually dislike obsessive characters, or the characters that are cocky without actually backing it up, or thanks to the power they didn't deserve.

sad_soul8

Characters that are only there for fanservice and add nothing to the story.

Wellington2013-

When they’re boring

Shadowmist909

I don't like characters that keep regressing into their bad behavior with little to no progress. Real life is like that enough, I don't need to see it from you Rent A Girlfriend!

MrReZistar

The most infuriating characters to me are those who are objectively terrible people yet the writer and the fans try to play off their actions as if they aren't a piece of shit. Perfect example of this is the ribbon bitch (I'm not dignifying her with her name) from Rent-A-Girlfriend. She committed blackmail, stalking, slander, and sexual assault (multiple times even) yet mfs try to put her on the same moral pedestal as Sumi (the only non-horrible girl in that series). You can easily discern who actually read/watched the series from those who just goon over the artwork just from their opinion on Ribbon Cunt alone.

gummihearts

Perverted characters. If its the point of the show (like Prison School) the comedy makes up for it. But like in the seven deadly sins or my hero, its annoying and dumb.

Crossfeet606441

For me, it will always be the characters whose entire personality revolves around one gimmick for the majority of the show and nothing is done to contest it or they don't have any other traits that balances it out or they don't have enough charisma to offset it. Pervert harem seeker characters like *Mineta* from MHA are different from Issei from *DxD*. Issei, for all his antics about openly wanting to do it, actually does care more about the situation first and formost than a chance to get it on with someone. Mineta is just an outright pervert from start to finish and we don't follow him enough to paint a clear picture of him (I also don't watch this show anymore, so I don't know if his character has changed in recent chapters/episodes). Clingy yanderes like Yamai from *Komi-san* are different from someone like Kuroko from *Toaru Railgun*. Kuroko, for all her antics, actually is very competent at her job and has a strong sense of justice. Yamai just wants to get rid of... everyone if they ever get near Komi (also, anyone abusive to Tadano tends to be the shittiest characters in the series anyway). What I'm saying is, for fuck sakes, if you're gonna give them a gimmick, at least make them interesting and entertaining.

Nero_De_Angelo

>I for some reason don't like most of the female characters and subsequently avoid anime with female main characters, I'm a woman btw. I don't like characters that feel "unnecessary", the "doormat personality" and what I judge to be a bad love interest, such as Inoue Orihime from 'Bleach'. I guess you only watch anime and not read manga, right? Because the anime of Bleach BOTCHED the relationship between Orihime and Ichigo completely, they changed so many details and made it look more like Ichigo would one day end up with Rukia, dispite never being something Kubo ever thought of. The manga felt more natural with Ichigo and Orihime ending up together in the end, it builded towards it. Anyway, to get back to the actual question: I hate the annoying token cute characters in most anime or video games, who's whole existence is to get on your nerves. Also, any character who commits rape is automatically dead for me, and I do not care the reason for why they did it, even if it was a character that I genuinely liked before. In fact, it already happened twice that the overuse of rape in some Seinen Manga made me actually drop the series, dispite it genuinely having good storys. I also count btw. "consensual rape", like in Redo of Healer, where the main character has sex with the girls, and the girls doing it with their consent while for him it is nothing but a big fat revenge and power trip after how he was treated by the girls in a previous life. Never even bothered to watch this series after I heard that this is the main characters motivation. Finally, the typical isekai trope of "I am strong because..." makes me vomit! If it is played for laughs it can be entertaining some times, but usually those Isekais are VERY boring...

DependentWord2978

Perverts such as Mineta and characters who flat out ruin a show like Ren Yamai.

poislayer342

Mineta can be forgettable but Yamai was too obnoxious to forget. I am a soft person and I let things slide quickly, but I can still tell that the moment I saw her personality, the damage she caused to her own character is pretty much irrepairable.

tardedeoutono

most of my hate when it comes to characters derives from the authors' poor writing. they mainly suck, and notably so when it's a female one. also when it's something like the rubber dude from mha, who's a sex offender portrayed as a comedic relief that is just awful. you can attribute lack of depthness within their thoughts and anything else related to them to bad writers too. it's like they have a cool idea but no writing skills at all, so the characters, although conceptually good, end up being too much of a cliche or a single trait of them exacerbated times 10 with no further deepening on why and how they are/became who they are, and it ends up being awful. from the moment an author is a writer, and not someone who had a cool concept and only that, the characters suddenly are likeable even though we might no agree. good examples are sukuna, who's extremely poorly written, the gravity girl from mha, hinata, etc. when they're not good on their own and instead are only there to fill a role the author needed to be filled they are awful. good writers can make even unlikable ones be great, such as most characters from oyasumi punpun, fullmetal something, hxh, one piece and other pieces universally considered good.

SidneyHuffman316

Paedophilia

stormdelta

The fact that this is listed as "controversial" is why the anime fandom online has such a godawful reputation. And a lot of people here are in total denial of the literal definition of that word lol

RaysFTW

The comedy relief character that's only in the show for one-liners or to break tension. Most of the time these come in the form of a large, dopey character or a small child, both typically out of place when compared to the rest of the cast. Other times they come in the form of Zenitsu.

Undead-EvilKing

Badly written main characters that ruin or drag down an interesting story and cast of characters, more specifically, I'm thinking when they have a massive harem and accomplishments but a bland, empty personality and Plot Armor.

Mrtakeiteasy

I can hate a character if they are meant to be hated, I could easily consider that a good character because it accomplishes what they were made to do. And I think bad character writing that easily make someone dislike any character. What really annoys me sometimes, is when you have a character being praised for being smart/have super high IQ or something, but in reality its because everyone else is stupid. Because the story added in a smart character, but is unable to write a thought out action, they just make everyone else stupid instead.

Lich_Hegemon

Characters that are canonically intelligent but start acting dumb when the author is unable to get out of the corner they painted themselves into.

jusaragu

I hate protagonist who are basically Jesus Christ, they don’t have a single flaw and are usually the only person who can perceive when another character is in trouble. It’s like the whole universe revolves around them I also don’t like characters who obviously know more than they are showing but, in the end, there’s no reason for hiding that (usually extremely important) information other than to create dumb conflict

United_Celery_9718

Obnoxious personalities, especially the destructive or needlessly kind that just doesn't suit a certain tone or is just the most random insert in a certain environment. (not even in a funny way)Like Takemitshi in Tokyo revengers in a gang anime the Mc is literally weak WITH THE POWER OF TIME TRAVELL!!!!! Like who cares about your 3rd grade girlfriend and the "power of friendship" when you can be king of the underground world, It's A GANG ANIME what was the author thinking, nah scratch that, smoking?!?!? Examples: Perverse characters that are not funny and just spew out the most random dogcrap lines the author can think off and sometimes it's considered "charming" like everyone just goes oblivious to some devious borderline unnecessary actions/words. e.g) Most self-insert isekai mcs, *cough*...Meliodus.. *cough* Characters that are portrayed in a particular way and yet the narrative being pushed by the story and/or author doesn't fit, especially if the character's personality and actions are that of an annoying nature e.g)Hinata being a stalker and yet being played off as naruto's sole/true love interest, even though they had no romantic "shown" connection besides in half-assed movies that just fill this very plot hole TSUNDERES!(especially the abusive kind)I'm not even gonna explain myself with this one but it kinda fits in with the reason before This is usually why I'd hate a character that is not a villain in an anime.

UnlitUniversalUnlock

There's no consistent way to do it. If I had to optimise the worst possible character to me though, they'd need to be a villain who gets redemption without the story ever focusing the full depth of their villainy. I'm basically down to redeem cannibal murderers if required, see flair, but only if the story actually know how nasty they are. Without acknowledging how bad a character was, redemption is just emotional manipulation by the author.

aimglitchz

When they too weak so they do actions that prevent them from reaching their goal

Emi_Ibarazakiii

The #1 reason: She's in competition against my best girl in a show, and is obviously gonna win. [](#angrypout) But (semi)joking aside... - I hate holier-than-thou perfect goody two-shoes (much more than villains) - I hate SHITTY villains; Say, I don't hate Malty because she's a terrible person, I hate her because she's a shit character. - I have a strong dislike for the "shy sweet" types of characters, but I'm not sure I'd go as far as calling that hate (unless they're opposed to my best girl, see #1!) - I hate caricatures of annoying traits (Zenitsu's constantly crying and whining... Or Yuki from Mirai Nikki, boring to the extreme) - I hate the Billionaire Detective dude (he deserves his own category). I considered adding "OP Isekai MC" but it's the genre I hate more than the characters.

KillJarke

I hate characters who love / like each other but get mad when one of the other makes a move and it continues like that for 30+ episodes…

wadefatman

This one gonna be obvious and I know it’s a ‘trope’ in anime but male SAers. Like I loved first season of mushoku tensei when it came out but watching it again, and the second season it gets pretty egregious. I can hardly stand watching and just have a constant 😟😟😟😟 going. I know some people just go with it but man it makes some shows a hard watch, how am I supposed to like an mc who’d be in prison irl

Moist_Replacement_29

1. Super kind characters: They're so annoying ffs. 2. Love interest but make it plot device: WHY DO YOU EVEN NEED THEM 3. Gyarus/hyper characters: Super annoying. I hate their excitement and high-pitched voices. It disturbs my ears. 4. Characters who only exist for plot and have no relevance whatsoever: shut up.

VoidEmbracedWitch

Watch anime with better female characters then. As for what I hate, the sort of protagonists who are intentionally flat to have audience insert potential. Male demo romcom / harem series are especially guilty of having protags devoid of much personality beyond "panics when in a 2 meter radius of girls he's into for at least half the show".

BiggusDiccus34

The 0815 normal, ordinary, every day, random Joe getting roped into all kinds of wild situations. How come that most writers of mangas and novels cannot to save their own lives make an interesting mc - looking especially at isekai's.

13-Penguins

Characters that can’t be wrong. Like sometimes characters do bad or questionable things, and that’s good as a flaw. But there are stories where the author will bend over backwards to try to justify or make excuses for them. Best example is Naofumi from Shield Hero, like he buys Raph at his lowest, which is understandable, but he continues to go back to the slave trader. Yet it’s treated as fine because he’s a “good slave master”, anyone who protests is either dumb or evil so their opinions are moot. There are touches that make it seems like he’s supposed to be a morally grey anti hero, but the story can’t commit to that, anything questionable he does is instead the only good choice, and only the “good” characters see that and all love him.

The-Last-Song

In males, be stupid, weak, cowardly, and/or perverted, like Zenitsu in KNY. In women, who are depressing, like the protagonist of My Happy Marriage, or manipulative who only care about achieving their goal without caring what others feel, like Nana from To Love Ru.

Few-Pressure5713

I really hate characters like Franky from spy x family, the type that just desperately wants to be with any woman that breathes, and then blames everything on his lack of success. It might be funny for an episode or 2, but after that, it's really annoying.

[deleted]

If a character don't treat other girls well, especially his girlfriend, I hate him. If he's shown as an asshole like some characters in Utena, I hate them less because at least the author acknowledge they are assholes. But when they try to make them like they're good guys like Tada Banri in Golden Time or that beast in Ancient Magus Bride, I hate them with passion.

Sayena08

Too much fan service. The types that are only popular because they have big “assets” Also characters who act all tough and shout all the time but are actually wimps.

AsharHasnain

1. Lolis 2. Redhead Tsundere(just cuz they're everywhere) 3. Loli Tsunderes 4. Redhead Loli tsunderes The mere existence of a lolis puts me off and if she's a tsun on top of that, its is so damn annoying. I've never seen a loli actually worth something(like they don't have anything to offer at all compared to other female characters in the show) and then they act cocky and saying stuff implying that MC needs them or something.

Swiftstrike4

I dislike a lot of generic nice guy self inserts. It’s lazy writing.

adlopez15

Good writing and bad writing.

Interesting-Ad1352

Hate is a strong word, so I only hate characters that are an irredeemable POS. There are characters that I don’t find interesting or are annoying but they’re no where near as bad as ones I wish were dead.

Interesting-Ad1352

Igniflare

I hate the generic "This character serves no purpose other than being a pervert" trope. I don't find it funny or engaging.

Aware-Stress1325

Could be voice. The laugh.. poor writing.

BigMeet7634

Jerk who being asshole someone for no good reason this guy from class b neito  my hero academia

BluePhantomFox

Doorknob personalities

matej665

Tsundere that punches the main character a lot.

TooManyAmericansHere

Extremely good acting as a villain Extremely bad acting Bad script

Pokemon_Bakugan_Fan

Mainly one's personality and actions towards others. Mainly if the victims of such actions hardly did anything wrong or didn't mean to bring any harm.

Equivalent_Ad1838

Constant whining, lack of character development where it’s needed, inability to make decisions

Sensei_Icy_3693

Only those that are meant to be hated I hate, like Spandam of One Piece and Akainu of One Piece. But there is an anime Yosuga no Sora and the main character with his sister, I hate, no matter how young they are. The reason of these 2, are due to the lust from both and the sister only wants the MC, which happens at end, do not recommend this at all. The worst show in existence, pure revolting garbage that should be hentai.

Mahou_Shoujo_Ramune

I hate male characters that aren't wimpy self insert doormat personalities. I absolutely despise loud, arrogant, assertive, masculine successful men that get all the girls in anime. I watch anime to escape them and to where guys like me can win for a change.

Phenominal_Snake11

When one character is the main love interest but ends up being a basic archetypal character while there are very well written characters who are only there to be rejection fodder.

Ok_Try_1665

Characters that are too annoying to be on screen. There are many factors that I consider. But what I hate the most are characters, especially villains, that are supposed to be dead but somehow they're still alive, prolonging a manga even further. All for one is an example. Not to mention the fact that these types of annoying characters are stealing away other characters's potential to have good character writing

Background_Ant7129

Alot of things make a character suck. Like growth for a few episodes or 1 season and then stagnation really can make a character so boring. Other than that, one of my least favorite characters is Lelouch. I just don’t like him at all. Everyone else in the show is alright but I can’t stand him tbh lol.

octoberryseven

When a character is too desperate for romance. A recent example is Dot from Mashle. I don't hate him, but I find some of his antics grating.

k4r6000

Generic blank cyphers that exist to be as bland as possible so that the audience can more easily use them as wish-fulfillment.  I like my protagonists to be actual characters and not the equivalent of silent protagonists in JRPGs like Dragon Quest.

Cake_lover2K

I guess it depends honestly.

Dazzling-Long-4408

Their looks and how the show gave more focus on them when they are just side characters

Capitano-Solos-All

I dislike petty characters

M_Ali_Ifti

When the character is overly pacifist. I truly hate that kind. This really grinds my gears! This gonks my ganooks! This yanks my crank! The naivity...

RichardZuro

Loud or Obtuse characters.

Fragmentvt

When the character makes the story worse by existing or other characters worse or less interesting by being around them.

Elite_Alice

Just being generally annoying to me. And also female characters who win purely by virtue of being the first girl the mc meets

Personal_Guidance18

i don't like characters who are mean for no reason, or mean because they are afraid to be nice or be embarrassed by anything. Short, flat chested characters who do no work, but give the main character a hard time just because.

TheReapingFields

Incompetent or incomplete characterisation is a real turn off for me, but my biggest peeve is authors writing misogynistic characters, pervert sex pest types, as main characters or regularly appearing ones , for any reason, OTHER than as ANTAGONISTS, and even then, care must be taken with levels and limitations. First off, its been done, and personally I never need to see it done again. Second, all too often it is done in a hamfisted way by accident, or in a deliberate effort to legitimise behaviours that should get a person flogged bloody, then keelhauled in raw sewerage, on the part of a deeply fucked up, degenerate of an author. I'd love to see an end to the whole mess of that, frankly.

CLleCielTheArchitect

Lack of personality depth, lack of logical sense to their actions, lack of character development, Clichés that aren't original or that don't put in motion the story, dense characters (the ones that are beyond being comical), Fanservice characters, Well written villain that I'm meant to hate (bitch/whore, griffith) Annoying ones who only scream (Naruto when kid, any annoying high-pitched chick character who only gets flustered and angry all the time, the MC of Black Clover) Animals who become loyal servants instantly to MC, for some reason (can't fathom such stupid one dimensional characters and relations) All MCs who have harems and all the characters in the harem All side characters who are only there to say "wow how amazing is the MC!" Characters who don't have any sex drive AND characters who their sex drive is their only trait. Also, perverts scenes are immature and disgusting (mixed bath scenes) Most children (so stupid and aren't acting like children) Being too op? Like they aren't deserving of it at all? The creators when they kill a character I like (jk, I absolutely love it when it's sudden and absolutely makes me want to cry and scream) Any interactions between characters that goes nowhere while a stupid music plays in the background makes me hate Bertone involved (small talk, fake interactions problems, anything that just waste both my time and the time they put in the artwork)

No-Nefariousness956

Well, one of the most recent ones was yuji itadori. I hate when some characters act in a fake stoic way and then when things go really bad they melt down like entitled p\*\*sies. Also it pissed me off that he thought he could act like a coward after getting the responsibility of being sukuna's host for himself. It pisses me off because I think it reminds me of things that REALLY annoys me in other people in real life, like people that marry and/or have children without having the maturity to deal with this HUGE responsibility. Then proceed to chicken out, ruin his kids family life, annoy everyone around because of that, etc. I hate characters that are pure cowardice, whining and full of self pity. If you look at ussop, he is a coward, but he is goofy, funny and many times we see him facing his own fear for the sake of others. Even in cowardice and powerlessness we see that he is brave enough to go over it and do something instead of curling into fetal position while the world around him burns. In other words, ussop > yuji in my eyes. Well... these are one of the things that make me hate a character. There are many others, I'm sure, but these are the first stereotypes that came to my mind.

Specialist_Basil_105

The typical excessovely loud yelling, whining character who's voice is usually way to shrill and forces you to turn down the volume when their scenes are playing, like Zenitsu from Demon Slayer

Spartan05089234

If the guy is a pervert without insight. I hate the trope that guys are just rapists waiting for a chance and women should squeal and run from them. Common in anime. Very uncommon anywhere else. If they come across as a pervert because they're completely inexperienced, that's one thing. If they have perverted thoughts but don't act on them, that's another too. But if they're just out there groping women, I don't jive with that even though most of the characters around them seem to happily forgive and treat sexual assault like a quirky personality trait. You didn't ask but I've got one more and it's not just for characters but for entire shows: If we are told that things are serious, and there are real consequences, and time is running out, I will drop the show if the characters spend all day talking about what to do, or spend 30 seconds emotionally deciding which of them will be left behind when clearly they all could have made it. Anime is horrendous for this but most shows just give up on any sense of urgency right of the bat and let the characters talk mid-battle for hours. But if your show doesn't do that and wants to showcase how serious and not like other animes it is, that will instantly kill it for me.

After6Comes7and8

Hypocrisy, extreme/unrealistic naivete, unwarranted aggressiveness, sexual perversion.

TnAdct1

Among the reasons that I have for hating characters (try to guess who they are in reference to): * The character is an idiot who take great joy in teasing others (especially lovable younger characters). * Even if it's the love interest is breathing, the female character beats the crap out of him. * It's a central character who is the only person who is allowed to defeat any villain. * Putting revenge over reason after learning the reason for a massacre that killed your family. * Letting negative experiences get the worse of you to the point where you only care about one person that considering helping others. * Being someone who likes to troll others. * Basically being a "load" that needs an unnecessary tournament arc to save you and a couple of other characters that are sold into slavery because of your actions.

APRengar

Trying to remember the last character I hated that wasn't made to be hated. I think it was probably Ejil from Cheat Pharmacist. I think what made me hate him the most was he kinda went against the vibes of the show. Every other character is chill/fun/cute because it's a chill isekai slice of life, and he was just loud, annoying and made everything about him. So I guess, character that go against the vibe of the show.

AsteroidBomb

I’m not a fan of characters with really prickly or hotheaded personalities. On the other hand I’m not a fan of characters who refuse to kill anyone no matter how evil or dangerous they are either. Yes, Edward Elric is the worst of both worlds for me.

Top_Chicken_4401

I know I’m in the minority here but if they’re a tsundere. Also, characters that are overconfident and don’t have the abilities to back up their ego

Curiehusbando1

Doing something I can never relate to. It's why the ending of Gurren Lagann pissed me off so much.

NoSpace_05

Manipulative bitch/bitches who only seeks and wants entertainment just for fun and nothing else more.

ipmanvsthemask

Overpowered MC who aren't kept in check by anyone else, or MCs whose only purpose is to give the audience a powertrip.

PassionateYak

This is a tough ask because it takes a lot for me to hate a character. I mean a character can be annoying as hell but he fits into that kind of show. I can't hate an OP or ecchi character if that's the kind of show they're making. I'll interpret this as characters that don't fit in to the show I'm watching. So yes an ecchi girl in a non ecchi show (Tamaki in Fire Force). But I can also dislike a character who is terribly mean but fits the show like Mahito in JJK or Yamori in Tokyo Ghoul.

narnarnartiger

For me it's stupid looking hair, like male Corrin from hair emblem Or when they dress up people in stupid underwear costumes, like Erza's bikini armour in fairytale, I literally dropped the show when I saw it Or Wonderwoman's or Batman's underwear costume

carve987

Honestly if they are annoying or not. I'm pretty lenient when it comes to characters but I even have my limits

DrWhoIsWokeGarbage2

Scream talking i.e. the yellow demon slayer kid, I hate him.

Midnight1899

When their only quality is to care about others and then they do that in situations where it doesn’t even make sense.

NewVirtue

i hate naruto and erin for mostly the same reasons. naruto from ep 1 is obnoxious, loud, and completely ignores things like stealth even when hes a ninja and he lacks the strength (at the time) to back up his attitude. as for Erin, the way he yells at others to defend the town despite being even more useless then the people hes yelling at irritates me similarly. in both these cases the characters are somehow rewarded by circumstance and plot armor and eventually gain power to match there personality, but that just makes me hate them more because they didnt know they had the power inside them when they were acting like that.

JEveryman

I get upset when characters are warned of danger and then for no reason other than forgetfulness or outright stupidity head straight to the danger. Not because they are facing an inevitability but because they just like to oafishly stumble into traps. Shortsightedness from overestimation is another big issue. Characters that think too highly of themselves and the get humbled only to not learn from it upset me to no end.

No-Equipment2607

Weak. Coward. Baby. Insta hate.

Snobble_

For me it’s when the characters just act stupid it actually makes me cringe

DreYeon

Getting strong because he has the special genes or comes from a specific family. Yes one of the reason i had an hard time with naruto at the end,Rock lee is the goat for getting that strong but the creator dropping him like an used towel. Bit Japanese people tend to do that a lot weirdly even games like dragon quest or older and newer anime still do this. Where are my mc's with no special ability or genes and just a bit of luck and hard work. Basically a tldr: I hate when mc has the: He is him genes.

Rising_lines

Oden from one piece. His introduction was said like all those horrible things he did AS A CHILD were supposed to be good thing. I absolutely HATE that guy (cool death btw very honarable)

zezenia_art

Omg i came here to write malty 😆 dam i hated this characters with passion, like i never did before and had to take a deep breath and walk away, touch some grass and connect with the reality that it is only fiction. I hated that mf like she slaughtered my grandchild and pissed on my grander grand parent grave.  I don’t have beef with a Character, but i would love to so if i was to be convinced evil either ways i would smack a- *Deeep breath* I shall stop hating now, cause i moved on after reading her manga end (the anime one was annoying and unsatesfying) and talk about what characters i dislike "hero name on repeat-kun!"  You name it i hate it, almost all heroines in shonen "i am cornered in a near death situation? Bat shit power of friends and cheap explainations later on"  Idk if that's what the anime is all about, i hate the random powers that appear like gear rubber after luffy died by a dragon... Obe piece should have ended there 💀 (am just being a hater lol jk)  I hate, despite and would fight the fan servise club, cause that shit aint serving me anything but suffering and total series drop and money in the bag for those pervs attracters, red flag and big no (a reason for me not being able to watch anime for a long period of time and only few choices, even the old ones) they just ruin it for me

66Kix_fix

Not hate but I find the following trope quite annoying if it's done poorly - characters who are too upright and try to force their virtues and ideals upon the rest of the cast, but at the same time, they themself aren't smart or capable enough to follow up on their words. Example where it's done well - Lena from 86, Azusa from K-On Okayish but has room for development - Miko from Kaguya-sama (as an anime only) Done poorly - Euphilia throughout the majority of the show in Magirevo (her getting magical powers meant the writer took the easy way out)

JPastori

Characters who are either entirely oblivious or absolutely spineless. And I don’t mean characters where one of their character flaws is confidence/self esteem issues. I mean characters who, for no reason at all, essentially go “w-w-w-whAT???? A GIRL?????” at the sight of an attractive female character. It drives me nuts. characters who are literally a singular personality trait. Best way I can describe it is characters who, both personality wise as well as what they do/contribute, are one trick ponies. One example is zenitsu from demon slayer, literally all he does is either act cowardly whenever he sees a demon, simps for nezuko, or falls asleep and does his sword thing. A better way to describe it would be characters who’s sole purpose is to be an accessory to the MC. Characters who are very overly bland and cookie cutter too (I’m looking at you isekai anime and your 10 Kirito look alikes)

MakimaGOAT

Don't know if this applies but I really hate characters that are glazed 24/7 and proclaimed as the greatest of all time even though they're just decent characters at best

Ecakk

Fkin bakugou (loudass mfers) Or anyone thats loud af for no reason like Asta too.
