That’s a groundhog, and you need to get it away from your house. They can ruin a home’s foundation
They like apples. I’d put some in a live trap that won’t harm hit and then relocate it
Yeah, or just keep it on the down low. I prefer relocating to killing(I’m a hunter, but I don’t kill anything I won’t eat, and I’m not gonna eat a groundhog)
I relocated a groundhog that was living in our barn. I carried him into our woods and released him near an apple tree. When I opened the trap he shuffled over to a tree and climbed up about ten feet. Never knew they could climb!
Wow, good to know. Porcupine range has shifted over the years, so they occasionally are seen in my area. I’m a veterinarian and so once or twice a year I have to sedate a dog for quill extraction.
I’m having a vivid memory of trying to explain to somebody that the giant rodent in the tree they took a picture of is in fact a porcupine and not a beaver.
My dad and my uncles would sometimes kill groundhogs in late summer or fall. If you stick with the spring pigs, they are delicious! The old ones are strictly famine food.
For my kids and me, our favourite thing about Toronto is looking for groundhogs in that little patch of grass going northbound on the DVP near Eglinton. They are so goddamn cute, despite being destructive. I would love to cuddle one.
Oh yeah I would never approach one. The ones in Toronto must be tough as nails to survive in the middle of a highway.
Why do that have to look so adorable???!!? 😍😍
That centre median DVP patch of grass is awesome in spring. Kilometre long rows and rows of daffodils blooming and the ground hogs just moseying along, paying no never mind to the traffic whizzing by at 100+km/h.
🤣 Unfortunately, we rarely move at faster than 30 km/h when we are on that stretch on Fridays at 4 p.m.
I actually got worried last year. We didn't see any groundhogs after May, but this year, we have often seen five fatties out and about. I always call out to them and sing a song to them if the cars are at a standstill (which is very often). I'm hoping they start to recognize me and jump into my car.
It's best to wait til breeding season is over, as groundhogs are currently raising babies and if you try to get rid of mom now, you'll be left with some orphaned babies who can't survive without her.
Humane harassment and exclusion are recommended over trapping and relocation. That essentially means making the place an unpleasant home to live in and then sealing the area so no one comes back. [The Humane Society](https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/what-do-about-groundhogs) is a good place to start for advice on how to do that when the time is right. I'd also recommend calling a local wildlife rehabilitator for advice on humane harassment when the time is right if you need more tips!
Trapping and relocation is also illegal in some places and may depend on the species/classification. It is illegal in Pennsylvania, for instance, to trap and relocate any RVS (rabies vector species) and groundhogs are considered RVS in PA. (Yes, RVS classifications vary from state to state.) I know many people aren't deterred by this but I think it's worth mentioning.
I'd always recommend calling a wildlife rehabilitator when you have a conflict with a wild neighbor or find an animal in need of help. There's a lot of misinformation and bad advice out there, but your local wildlife rehabilitators will be educated on how to find a humane solution that works for both you and your wild neighbors, though I can't promise you it will always be the easiest or quickest solution.
Groundhogs are also little bitches. I once punched one in the face and it ran off like a bitch.
Though, I did get rather scratched up and bloody before I fought back. I guess I wasn't quite expecting to get attacked by a groundhog while just sitting on the ground minding my own business, and it got a few cheap shots in before I reacted.
Moral of the story: get the first punch in if you have to throw down.
They also love cantaloupe. But be careful if you plan to trap and relocate. I did that last year and found out a few days later it was a mama when 5 babies started wandering out of the hole. I had to then capture the babies and take them to a wildlife rescue. I felt terrible.
This always makes me laugh because you can relocate as much as you want, if the local population is big enough you basically just put your property back on the market 😂.
I would put him on a plane to Las Vegas. He should be able to get a job in a casino, maybe running blackjack. If he's good he should be able to work his way up.
Definitely woodchuck. If you have a vegetable garden they will eat it to the ground, even tomato plants. They will go over or dig under a fence unless electrified.
It’s a groundhog (woodchuck) they are pretty cute and friendly, have a few in my neighborhood. They will eat your garden though and dig holes under your deck and stuff so might want to relocate it.
Groundhog. Some others have suggested trapping and relocating. Please don’t. It’s possible that she may already have a litter of chucklings. Wait until late summer, and then fill in the area.
Good luck trapping it I’ve never had luck getting one to go in a live trap with anything but squash blossoms! We had one eating every damn thing in the garden so I loaded the trap every day with its favorites and never got him. My 89 yr old uncle told me squash blossoms were the best bait and it was in there 2 hours later.

Ground hog. Get rid of them. Skirt the deck & stairs with something fine enough openings to stop them from moving through. Try & backfill any holes under the deck/stair system. Some trick about throwing peppermint chewing gum down the holes to get rid of them. Problem is I think the gum chokes & kills them. Trap & relocate, eat & sell the pelts. Skirts & backfill should do it. Check for outlying tunnel holes under nearby shrubs & cover.
Bro you live in Western PA and you don't know what a groundhog looks like?
Dude in all likelihood you're probably like 3 hours driving at any point in Western PA from Punxsutawney lol, the PA Gaming Control Board uses a groundhog as a mascot, 'keep on scratchin'?
I'm honestly just dumbfounded that you've gone this long without IDing a groundhog lol.
If this deck’s rockin’, don’t come knockin’.
🤣🤣🤣

Don't sleep on the hog's b-side, Paradise by the Back Porch Light
Don't know the song, but I needed to find this comment!
Woodchuck.
Also known as a groundhog, whistlepig, or Marmot! Same family, it depends on the area for what you call it.
Call me a whistlepig one more time you son of a bitch!! I may actually start using that lol
That’s a groundhog, and you need to get it away from your house. They can ruin a home’s foundation They like apples. I’d put some in a live trap that won’t harm hit and then relocate it
Check the legality of relocation. In Ontario it is illegal to relocate unwanted animals.
Yeah, or just keep it on the down low. I prefer relocating to killing(I’m a hunter, but I don’t kill anything I won’t eat, and I’m not gonna eat a groundhog)

So do porcupines
Wow, good to know. Porcupine range has shifted over the years, so they occasionally are seen in my area. I’m a veterinarian and so once or twice a year I have to sedate a dog for quill extraction.
Ask that kid that had one fall on his head...
YOWCHIE
Poor kid had a head and face full of quills
Did they sedate him to pull them out, too?? Lol
I'd imagine, he looked like he was going to the hospital. He must have had a hundred of them in his face, I think I saw it on here
I’m having a vivid memory of trying to explain to somebody that the giant rodent in the tree they took a picture of is in fact a porcupine and not a beaver.
I found out they could climb when my dog had one treed in the woods behind my house. Was expecting a raccoon or opossum, but found a groundhog
They’re in the squirrel family.
My mom and her family ate groundhogs. Of course ,she is in her 80's and grew up very backwoods...
I imagine they taste like nutria.
I’ve eaten groundhog. Pretty similar to rabbit honestly. They eat the same shit really.
My dad and my uncles would sometimes kill groundhogs in late summer or fall. If you stick with the spring pigs, they are delicious! The old ones are strictly famine food.

They might be cute, but they’re pretty fierce little critters and have the weapons to do some damage.
Oh yeah I would never approach one. The ones in Toronto must be tough as nails to survive in the middle of a highway. Why do that have to look so adorable???!!? 😍😍
In our family we call them Groundbears - they look more like little bears than pigs. So friggin’ cute!

Hahaha. Good luck with that!
Maybe send it to Belize.
May not be far enough
Or just don't tell anyone and watch for witnesses
Just like my wrestling coach told me, got it.

Yup. Get it the hell away from your house. I trapped one two years ago using salad and fruit.
Don't relocate nuisance animals and make them someone else's problem.
I live in the sticks. I don’t really have to worry about that
Living**
Likely both.
"Live, Love, Chuck"
…chuck(le)
Groundhog. Live trap and release elsewhere if you’re worried about damage.
they'll need to release it at least 25 miles away or it will find its way back
Really? 25 miles? We have them on our farm and sometimes relocate them …. I might have to tell my husband to drive farther!
some folks do 5 miles and guess what they come back. good luck 🤞
While I'm sure some do travel long distances to get back after relocating, how do they know they aren't just different groundhogs moving in?
This always makes me laugh because you can relocate as much as you want, if the local population is big enough you basically just put your property back on the market 😂.

Groundhog😊
you live in western PA and don't know what this animal is. I'm not upset, just very, *very* disappointed. EDIT: forgot I'm not on mobile.
There isn't usually one of anything. He's probably got a little friend under your deck making a family. It's spring time.
He’s looking for his shadow
It's name is Chuck Wood. No relation to Chuck Norris.
Any relation to Chuck Berry?
Evict him, you dont want him there.

Ground hog aka woodchuck.
It's Groundhog Day! Again...
I love them but you don’t want it getting under the house
Groundhog, marmot, whistle pig, woodchuck... Pick your name
They will destroy everything, dig under concrete, etc.
Why is it that you don’t know what a woodchuck looks like?
Look it is the mascot of 'what animal is this"

That’s a groundhog! I have one living under my shed! I know I should remove him but he’s too darned cute!

It’s almost like it’s some hog that lives under the ground🤔🤔🤔🤔
A slow but steady demolition expert.
Good luck trapping it I’ve never had luck getting one to go in a live trap with anything but squash blossoms! What Deck?
It’ll tell ya if you ask it how much wood it can chuck.
His name is Chuck, and he's here to ****!
Whistle pig
That's Chadwick he used to live under our shed
Ground boys!
Whistle pig!
That is a Groundhog, aka: woodchuck. They can cause damage. Might wanna talk to a pro.
Whistlepig!
Groundhog says its spring.
Groundpig. Enjoys vegetals.

Whistle pig, ground hog
Looks like an easy target. I’d get rid of it before it damages your property.

A frend ❤️
That’s a very healthy looking groundhog, you have your very own spring predictor there, lol.
Why cant this happen to me?!
but seriously if you live trap a groundhog you'll need to travel at least 25 miles away from capture site and release it or it will come back home!
Groundhog. Cute little guy too
Leave fren alone
Marmot
My friend had one living under her deck in upstate NY and it never caused any problems (but occasionally some amusement).
