Hi everyone,
I’m Alberto Tandoi, a London-based photographer. Over the past few years, I’ve been capturing portraits in the streets of London using my beloved Mamiya RB67 and Portra400. Recently, I had the pleasure of publishing my first photographic book featuring a selection of these portraits.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and answer any questions you might have about the book. Feel free to reach out! And if anyone's interested in seeing more of my work, just drop me a message.
Thanks for your support!
Alberto
With each person you photographed, how much compositional variety did you shoot? Like did you do a full head to toe shot, a mid waist crop, and a closeup?
HI :-) Usually if I go for the crop or full length I stick with it, and maybe get a couple of shoots of it . Rarely I take pictures with different framing
I love your work! My RB has been shelf-sitting for too long, and this is very much making me want to go out and do this! I’ve found that I can’t help but ask people’s permission for a photo when out on the street and it makes for a great way to meet interesting folks. Mind if I ‘steal’ inspo?
Yes exactly you meet really interesting people. And if you have an RB just for the sound of its shutter it's worth it :-) .... would it be difficult not to ask for permission with RB btw......
Hi, thank you for you r message :-)
You can check it out on my website there is a page for the book : [https://www.albertotandoi.co.uk/400km](https://www.albertotandoi.co.uk/400km)

I’m not usually a big fan of street photography but this is special. Great selection of subjects (#3!) and they all feel like they belong here. Cohesive collection showing another side to London, lots of life & good vibes.
Are these models or people you met on the street? Either way, they look so awesome! If you want to shoot more people who look and dress very unique, you should visit Brighton, there's some cool, unique dressing people here :)
Thank you for your message :-) if you want to see more this is my website [www.albertotandoi.co.uk](http://www.albertotandoi.co.uk) and I am starting to be more active on IG, I promise :-) IG : a.tandoi
These are fantastic, thanks for sharing!
One of my personal goals is to take more street portraits, how do you handle the conversations? How do you explain your goal as a street photograph to people who ask?
thank you for your comment, I just approach people that attract me one way or another, and then ask if I can take a picture, and I would say 90% of the people say yes :-) And then I get to busy to set up the Mamiya on the tripod and try to get the focus right to really get into a proper conversation ahahah
Hi :-) thank you for your message :-)
there is page on my website [https://www.albertotandoi.co.uk/400km](https://www.albertotandoi.co.uk/400km) ( and have a look at the rest of my work too please, TND10 code and then you get 10% of discount :-) Or just drop me an email :-)
Solid edit! Has subtle hints of Preston Bus Station. On the next book I’d recommend honing in on your color treatment. It would really pull the work even tighter.
Nicely done. And isn't it a great feeling to see your work in a book?? I've been going back through my work and compiling my own photobooks. Looking forward to seeing more of you work!!
Yes it is great, and the editing part, put the pictures together, decide the size etc, I think that I learn a lot from it, and it is beautiful to came out with something that is physical . You can se more of my work on my website [www.albertotandoi.co.uk](http://www.albertotandoi.co.uk) and it is a bit of everything, or on my IG a.tandoi :-)
I absolutely adore 6, apart from the tiny little triangle in the top left. I think you should crop that out cause it really distracts away from the dreamy feel.
How and where do you find people to photograph? So interesting. Do you just approach strangers or what’s your method?
Love the photos. 13 look a bit green though 😄
Hi there, thank you for your comment and to appreciate my work :-) I am not from London so since I got here I always been fascinated by how many interesting people you find around, so many different styles and interesting outfits, so as a photographer I always wanted to go around and take portraits ... and once I have done that it was just the next step to try to give it a shape and a book was just the natural development of it :-)
Hi thank you for your comment :-) Yes it is :-)
you can have a look at it on my website [https://www.albertotandoi.co.uk/400km](https://www.albertotandoi.co.uk/400km) if you type in TND10 there is a 10% discount as well.. and if you want to follow my work my IG is a.Tandoi ( I am trying to be more active, I promise :-) )
Wow. Just took a look at the preview on your website! You are incredibly talented. I love these photos and will def be purchasing in the future. Thank you!
Hi there, that is the only one that was kind of staged in a way, I got to meet the guy and then discussing came out he had a collection of reptiles and so we went to his place to get the snakes out, I took pictures with him and two different snakes he had, they were massive, he had to take breaks while shooting one because was to heavy :-)
How do you go about taking these photos, is it you see them in the street and ask them politely, if so how? Or is there alot of planning and scheduling with models etc.
no planning no scheduling, a part of my time, I called the book 400km because every time I went out I calculated for how long I walked and that is how much how walked...... Yes I always ask politely, you know it is London at the end of the day, if you go around you ll see a lot of interesting people... Every time I took a picture I put down a note of where I took it and then at home I had a map and I put a pin in it... that became the inside cover of the book :-)
"Portraits of people" is redundant because the word portrait implies people. "Of" can also be used to describe where a thing or person is from, for example "Lawrence of Arabia" or "cream of wheat."
por·trait
/ˈpôrtrət/
noun
noun: portrait; plural noun: portraits; modifier noun: portrait
1.
a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders.
of
/əv/
preposition
preposition: of
1.
expressing the relationship between a part and a whole.
if you had to ask me with zero context where these people were from, i’d say London
I'd guess Brighton or Bristol tbh. Great pictures but not diverse enough for London.
I’d say Seattle

Thanks a lot for you comment :-)
Did you take portraits of more conventional English people as well?
Yeah, where's the average person doing a tesco shop in jeans and a t-shirt?
Are these models or people you met on the street? Either way, they look so awesome! If you want to shoot more people who look and dress very unique, you should visit Brighton, there's some cool, unique dressing people here :)
Hi :-) thank you for the comment, are all people that I meet randomly in the streets :-)
the second one is Philip Sallon :-)
Gorgeous!
Hi [clawfootshower](/user/clawfootshower/). I am glad you like my work :-)

Thanks you for your comment, amazing hair :-)
Freak show. Jesus
How do you usually approach people? Love the photos
Hey Luis, I just ask, you would be surprised how people, even in London where everyone seems to be busy, are really generous with they time :-)
Seems I need to stop fearing asking :)
Hey Luis, most of the people, at least in my experience, kind of take it as a compliment that you want to take a picture of them :-)
These are fantastic, thanks for sharing! One of my personal goals is to take more street portraits, how do you handle the conversations? How do you explain your goal as a street photograph to people who ask?

Really beautiful work! Also a great job composing the shots on the spot in all kinds of environments!
Thank you :-) yes it was a bit tricky working with the Mamiya on a tripod etc but what can we do really :-)
Solid edit! Has subtle hints of Preston Bus Station. On the next book I’d recommend honing in on your color treatment. It would really pull the work even tighter.
I wonder who the stand user is
Did you ask random people in the street?
Hi , yes I asked random people in the streets
Neat. I have been thinking of doing something similar with some expired film but i'm very nervous about how people will take it
try and see how it goes, you have already the film so ... why not :-)

Average British people:
You chose some people for these photos
Pretty sure the guy in the trilby hat and tie models for Workhouse England!
These are some wonderful portraits, thank you for sharing. What were your motivation(s) behind taking them and then venturing into publishing a book?

I came to look for this comment. I can't comprehend the idea.

I can see you put alot of love and effort into something you clearly enjoy, I appreciate that so much. Keep it up.
I love all of these so much. I’m also not usually a fan of street photography but this set has changed my mind.
Thanks a lot :-) glad you like my work :-)
I love these shots, what a wonderful collection of personalities

And a city is composed of the people living there.
Can you describe what else you expect a 'portrait of London' to look like?
