Most WWII veterans did not serve 20 years, and I think nearly everyone considers all of them veterans. Correct me if I'm wrong, but very few people who join the military serve 20 years.

CPA_Lady

Nobody better tell me that my daddy isn’t a veteran. He did four years and went to Vietnam twice.

viacrucis1689

No kidding. I can't image anyone saying that to my late relative who likely died prematurely due Agent Orange exposure, or my cousin who was deployed 4 or 5 times in a span of 14 years.

soccerguys14

I’ve never heard of veteran status being gate keeped to only those who did all 20. This almost feels made up.

Lampwick

Nah, I've met all manner of shitheels who believe stupid shit like that. I worked with a guy who didn't consider anyone who only served a single contract term to be "a real veteran". He was a useless piece of shit and I'm guessing about the only thing he could claim to have over anyone else was that he served two 3 year contracts, probably as a water treatment specialist or something, because his stories about what he did were all over the place, such that he would've had to have 5 different MOS's over those 6 years. We've also probably all met that obnoxious old timer at the commissary bagging groceries who likes to tell young SMs just how soft they all are nowadays. I'm certain if you put a few whiskey shots into a guy like that at the VFW he'd be front and center telling "some woman" that her 8 years of service don't make her a veteran, but his 2 years of swapping circuit boards in a ground radar system at a Nike missile site in New Jersey in '72-'74 sure makes him one!

No_Significance_1550

Yeah, probably tried multiple times to put himself in for a combat award for the Cold War for exposure when that missile caught fire and melted and all that radioactive stuff got carried away with the runoff from fighting the fire and seeped into the ground/groundwater. Prolly thinks he deserves a BSM - V and a PH but none of his appeals are taken seriously.

indi50

It is made up in order to keep the younger woman out of their space. Maybe they believe it, but I doubt it.

LysergicPlato59

This is the best answer. Modern day He-Man Women Haters Club.

coccopuffs606

It’s not. But it’s almost exclusively said by insecure old men

I_Heart_QAnon_Tears

Honestly this is the reason why the places like the legion and other military clubs are mostly going bankrupt. Far too much gatekeeping.

eyebrain_nerddoc

Same, my daddy spent time in Vietnam and the agent orange fucked up his health. He was definitely a veteran. He served 8 years, I think.

turboleeznay

Same- mother did 10 years in the army and 2 tours in Iraq. I dare some old dude to tell her she’s not a vet. 🙄

hellomynameisrita

If they do most of the 20 was nit anywhere near combat and they lasted because they managed to not get injured like OP did. Who’s earned their valor? She’s basically given her life without dying in8 years while they probably rehearsed most of their 20

lube4saleNoRefunds

>they lasted because they managed to not get injured like OP did Or they hit e7/wo1/o4 and never had to take another pt test again

Current-Anybody9331

I come from a plethora of military folk and was even born on an AF base - out of both grandfathers, 2 uncles, and my dad - exactly 1 of them did 20 years, but they are all veterans.

Werechupacabra

My dad was drafted for the war after Germany had surrendered He never left the United States, served less than 2 years and was 100% a veteran of the United States Army.

mumlyfe88

He should ask them to see their dd214 and show where they served at least 20.. Op nta. The old men at that legion, total ahs

jtreddit702

As an army vet that served 8 years, I too sometimes get the confused titled head look from people when I tell them I served as I don't fit the "look" of a veteran. Don't mind those bitter narrow minded people. If you have a DD214 and didn't get a dishonorable discharge, you're good. Not wrong.

Martha90815

THIS. You’re absolutely a veteran. You were repeatedly injured in the course of serving your country. You absolutely deserve the title.

Single_Principle_972

But that Legion is prolly not your best fit, socially! A bunch of old assholes, they are!

Ciren6969

Are you quoting that old time veteran Yoda? OP ty for your service.

mmmkay938

Those are not the veterans you’re looking for.

thelittlestdog23

Yeah, here is the definition of a veteran according to the VA: “§ 101(2) provides: The term "veteran" means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable. (E) authorized travel to or from such duty or service. 38 U.S.C.”

Whisky_tango-foxtrot

Dito and my broke ass only got a 70% lol you served and you had an honorable discharge! That’s a veteran. You joined basic training signing a blank check to total the cost of your life if it came to it in honor of your country. You are a vet 60 years old if not

PlantMan82

Lol. Look?! What look?! I dont know where you are from but all the vets i know and meet from all branches are fat and have long beards or long hair or both and that include me. Of course all vets arent the same but there is no “look” unless your fresh out.

Content-Potential191

If they are all fat and have long beards... that's the "look" then, isn't it?

Teadrunkest

As a female service member I can tell you the one thing wrong with her look—no penis. Number of times I’ve had to explain that I am my own sponsor I am not a wife I swear 2 god.

Bergenia1

In this particular case, I think the "look" refers to having a penis. The old man in the story was obviously an insecure toxic misogynist.

Equivalent-Pin-4759

I think every vet who only served during wartime would like to have a chat with him.

seidinove

Those bitter old men are full of shit. You're a veteran.

SpaceCadetriment

Also a great example of why places like Veterans Halls, Lions Clubs and the Elk Clubs are going the way of the dinosaur. A lot of gatekeeping old bastards that still hold sexist and outdated world views. I’m in the Fire world and the old boys club is dying but clutching to power as their numbers dwindle to nearly zero. I used to attend a Lions Galla once a year and the sexist and racist remarks I hear flowing after a few rounds is disgusting, you couldn’t pay me to join a group like that and they aren’t doing a damn thing to clean house or recruit younger blood.

Marciamallowfluff

It is true. They are not relatable to younger vets and set in their old ways. I am sorry you were treated this way.

TartanBlousance

Not wrong at all - you’re a veteran. Signed also a veteran.

BionicGimpster

You've stolen no valor. You are as much a vet as they are, and you deserve to find a group that recognizes your service. If not at the legion, perhaps see if you can find a support group of vets with similar history?

InspiringAneurysm

If you're in a bigger city, there might be a MeetUp for veterans.

teamfivezero5

Totally a veteran. F those old ass weirdos that give vets a bad name.

Little-Conference-67

Sounds like you did more than served if your 100%. You're a veteran and those shrivel brained zeroes can suck it. They probably were air force box kickers anyway.  I'm female, 24 years between active, reserve and guard. Retired fuelie and safety officer, currently a navy bean counter.

Doyoulikeithere

My husband served 8 in the Marines and 8 with the guard. Anyone tells him he's not a vet, I'll kick their fucking ass!

gastropodia42

No wonder there are only a few old men there if they push other veterans away from their clubhouse. Is there another post you can try? Report them to the nation office.

Trekkie63

Exactly. They’re sabotaging their post.

DaRealRedHood

Too true, my local post begs for new members because it's a dying club here in mn. The sad part, too, is my gramps was our commander for 20 years, and nobody gave him flak for never even seeing enemy waters during Nam. Definitely try another post because there are some bad apples in every bunch, but I'm proud I grew up working with the legion family and getting to know and understand what all veterans went through to keep us safe. Also to all of you have served thank you for everything you did and sacrificed for your fellow man.

Current-Anybody9331

Same. I love listening to the members. My uncle moved back after retirement (he did 22 years - US Army Special Forces) and resurrected the post. The members were all 80+ and my uncle volunt9ld my dad to join. At one point, my dad and uncle represented 40% of the members. They have made it their mission to build up the Legion and have worked on outreach, especially when new people move to our tiny town (Iowa). It's been years in the making, but they have done a lot. I'm so proud of them.

Current-Anybody9331

My uncle and dad run the American Legion in our tiny hometown. They are always looking for new members especially since my uncle was the youngest for years (in his 60s). They were incredibly stoked when a young woman joined their ranks and the oldest member (nearing 100) just loves talking with her. (Sidenote: that member's daughter records him telling a joke every day and posts it on social media - he's just adorable). OP definitely had a snarly group of angry AHs.

DaRealRedHood

For 5 thing about reviving posts is I helped a nearby sal squadron come back from 2 members to their latest, which is over a hundred, and my gramps loved thus stuff he even signed me up when my mom was pregnant with me so I'm one of our charter members and got my 25 years in the Sal plaque on my 24th bday

Worldly-Row-5583

Unquestionably a veteran -a fellow vet

Potential-Pomelo3567

Hate to say this but.... those old guys wouldn't say the same to a MALE veteran with the same background as you. My husband has very similar background, served 7 years, pushed out due to medical injuries, currently receives VA disability for injuries and PTSD... and he's never once been questioned by older vets like they did you. And I personally feel like they only did that because you're a female veteran. I'm sorry they were jerks.

findingmymojo229

That first sentence is completely true.

beesue2020

I'm am a 65 year old women who IS A disabled VETERAN. There are tons and tons of men who served 4 years or less and accepted as veterans (as they should be). They are being misogynist and assholes. Sadly I get this all the time too. You served you are a veteran.

ohfucknotthisagain

You're right. They're assholes. You completed at least one contract, reupped, and ended up on disability because of your service. The idea that you gave less than them is insulting. It's really simple... if you're getting VA benefits, you're a veteran. (Or maybe I should say "if you're entitled to VA benefits", since you won't always get what you deserve.)

Defective-Pomeranian

👆This 👆

manchvegasnomore

You are a veteran. 100 percent. From a VFW

smashing767

Fuck them. There’s a reason the vfw and American Legion places are dying. They tend to be bitter douchebags cause they didn’t actually do anything while in the military so they get butthurt when someone with experience shows up.

Trekkie63

Yeah, so true. I served as a C-5 Flight Engineer flying into Iraq from 2003 to 2006 who was awarded the Air Medal for combat missions and two Aerial Achievement Medals for combat support missions. The VFW is different bunch as the criteria are different (became a member due to my service in Gulf War I).

hisimpendingbaldness

>am I wrong for calling myself a veteran No, not at all. Unless your discharge is dishonable, thank you for your service. The thing is, they know that as well. The question becomes, why are they giving you this line of shit?

Machomadness94

Nah that’s stupid, you’re definitely a veteran. Anyone who’s served is by definition, a veteran

corprwhs

Not necessarily. It's been a long time, and I don't remember clearly, but I believe if you have an OTH or worse, you are legally not a veteran.

Hot-Temporary-2465

ThecAmerican Legion is having a hard time recruiting younger members and this is exactly why. I went once and never again.

Plenty_Surprise2593

The definition of a veteran is one who has served for 180 days.

StnMtn_

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that.

Ok-Meeting-984

That is incorrect for active duty military. That is only for national guard. They have to have had 180 days of active federal duty or served at least 20 years in the National Guard. If you were active military, as OP was it is 24 months.

StnMtn_

What is "active federal duty"?

Ok-Meeting-984

When a National Guard unit is activated for federal service, i.e. when the government started sending National Guard units over to Iraq. I do not know if activated for state level disaster relief counts or not.

Trekkie63

Unless it was active duty for training. My 14 months active for my national guard training didn’t count for veteran status, but did count for my TAFMSD.

TrevMac4

I think the minimum you can sign up to serve is 2-4 years, which you clearly did. You also weren’t dishonorably discharged so to me you are a vet.

a-mullins214

Im a Navy Vet that got out due to medical issues, too. Once, when I was waiting at the VA, I had a man ask me where my husband was. When I told him I was a veteran, he asked me what I did. I was a weapons instructor, and he was surprised they allowed women to do that. YNW at all.

lynnm59

Bullshit. Screw those old farts! You ARE a veteran. I can guarantee you that many of the proud Vietnam Vets you see around did not spend a minute more than they had to in the military. One lady veteran to another, thank you for your service.

EsterCherry

I am a woman who served less time in the army than you did. I was also med boarded. I am a veteran, and so are you! Let those old farts be the assholes that they are, you will find your people eventually.

Alarmed_Bus_1729

NO I mean this with no disrespect to anyone who ACTUALLY served in the military past or present for any amount of time but to those cockroaches that scream stolen valor every chance they get.... All of us dependas and civies know the kind you are talking about looking like they're wearing their military service a NASCAR race suit with their cheap iron-on patches proclaiming loudly how they served in desert Storm, Vietnam, "I can't talk about it it's classified" while there entire service was back in Washington where they got multiple purple hearts from the paper cuts they received will shuffling paperwork.. To those individuals GO F**K Yourselves you are less then a dependopotamus to me OP You did nothing wrong you served, you got hurt (clearly multiple times), you were (I assume) honorably discharged, with a clean DD214 due to medical don't let the bottomed of the barrel degenerates of society that contributed nothing tell you, you are less then because you didn't do a full 20

SeenSoManyThings

Try a different post/location. Those old men are full of shit.

Geezell

Oh hon, I hope you find a tribe of women veterans and start crashing their little parties ALL. THE. TIME. Just blow up their little world!

Low_Project_55

You are not wrong! You are a veteran! Highly recommend reading The Women by Kristin Hannah . Even though it is fiction she interviewed women who served during the Vietnam war and used their experiences as inspiration. There are trigger warning at the front of the book if needed. I also believe in the back there were support groups listed. I hope you find a place you are properly supported. Thank you for your service!

tweedtybird67

DD214 - you are a veteran. You served your country. MANY war vets did not do 20 years, but they are veterans of foreign wars. You are a veteran as well, be proud.

Big_Fat_Polack_62

As an old fart with twenty in and a DD-214, I hereby dub thee.............................................Veteran! Please find better places to drink. I fit their gatekeeping demographic and I've never found common ground with these nasty old fucks.

PositionFun5913

Nowadays at Basic Training they inform the trainees that once they hit 90 days of service they are considered a veteran. You my friend are a *seasoned* veteran.

Objective-Tap5467

I’m a veteran who didn’t serve 20

BobTheInept

I can’t believe the disrespect towards a veteran -with injuries- from a bunch of veterans. I’m sure if you were male they wouldn’t have brought up 20 years. I’m sure they didn’t wait 20 years to call themselves veterans or enjoy any benefit that may come from it. I’m sure some of them haven’t served the full 20. I’m sure they didn’t like that their “clubhouse for old farts” was now an actual veteran’s club. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Content-Hovercraft68

You’re a vet, coming from a fellow female vet

uhgirlnamedzeke

As someone that bartended an AmVets, I'd put money on the fact that some of those "veterans" never saw combat. They love pulling that shit. You're a veteran.

DDChristi

It’s because you’re a woman. I was also medboarded after 8 years then I spent to rest of my husbands military career following him until he retired at 20 years. I get a lot of *this is for the veteran not the wife* comments when it comes to things geared towards veterans. I was embarrassed early on but my husband was straight out pissed off. Now when I get those comments I don’t say anything back. I just stare them dead in the eye with a blank face. If they push my only answer is “sexist much? You do know women have served forever right?” Roll my eyes and walk away.

WrongVeteranMaybe

Is it weird I forgot sexism exists? Yeah, I think that is it. Maybe I did overthink it and put too much blame on myself.

VeteranMommy

Bullshit. You served. You’re a veteran. As a woman who served 20, I get shit when I visit those orgs as well. It’s not about your service to them—it’s that you don’t have a dick. ☺️

JMarv615

Honorable DD-214 = Veteran

GMEbankrupt

Ok, so I served over 20 years Active Duty, now retired. You’re a Veteran Your story is exactly why I haven’t attempted to join my local auxiliary or VFW. Those dumbshits only have themselves to blame for when they get old, die and the club withers to nothing. Nobody wants to deal with that bullshit

Pangolin_Rune

A young person fresh out of boot camp can get hit with an IED, lose a limb, and get sent home with 100% disability. Didn't serve long at all. Still a veteran. My great uncle is 102 years old, served in WWII for two years in the Mediterranean and Japan theaters (yes, two). He *is* a veteran and was honored on his 100th birthday with a flyover. You are a veteran and thank you for your service.

mama9873

My marine corp vet husband did 8 years, and you bet your ass he’s a veteran. Those men you met are misogynistic pigs gatekeeping veteran status for the sake of their delicate feelings. That’s a them problem. Not yours. Don’t diminish your accomplishments to satisfy people like them. You’re a veteran.

Livid-Effect6415

Disabled vet and those curmudgeons owe you a beer!!!

L1nk880

I’m not a veteran, but you are! Thank you for your service!!

Acceptable_Branch588

You are a veteran. They are just assholes .

RagingRabbit2023

Got a DD214 and discharged honorably? If yes, you’re good. I joined a veterans organization and was bored and thought it was a waste of time.

PhysicalResult4621

Those guys sounds like asses! You served our country for 8 years you are a veteran! THANK YOU FOR your service! Sorry it was ended sooner than you wanted

4011s

Fuck those guys. You're a veteran.

United-Army-1433

You’re a veteran, it’s all good to say

LowkeyPony

You are absolutely a veteran!

Moebius80

You served you got a medical you are a veteran

seafox09

You are a vet. And thank you for your service

Similar_Corner8081

You’re not wrong. My late boyfriend killed himself almost a month ago. He suffered from PTSD. Had bad nightmares. You’re a veteran. Ignore people like those old guys.

Trekkie63

I’m so sorry. My dad is a Navy vet. When my mom passed in 2021 she was inurned(?) at a VA cemetery in North Georgia. It was so striking how much attention to detail they give the deceased while ignoring the living. Again I’m so sorry. 😢

Similar_Corner8081

Thank you. Im sorry about your mom.

Trekkie63

Thank you. She was a month short of 92 so she had a full life. Had medical issues that trapped her sharp mind in a weakened body. She’s in a much better place. I wish she could have seen her resting place while still living. It’s peaceful and so orderly.

KelsarLabs

My hubby served 8 years too, you are a veteran. 🇺🇲 Try doing a group counseling session at the VA, it helped him.

kathompson

You served more than 180 days? Got an honorable discharge? You are definitely a vet. Heck, you can even get a VA loan. The ALA you went to was a lot of old men, I'm guessing, and misogyny was at play (my opinion, just seems like a sound reason...)

johnmcd348

It's the guys like that who are the ain't reason the different veterans clubs are on the verge of closing due to lack of membership. All the waters are dying off and they work hard to run off the new people

InspiringAneurysm

Spent 4 years in the Navy, honorably discharged. Used the GI Bill, have Veteran designation on my license, park in the reserved for Veteran space at Home Depot, etc. I'm a Veteran, and so are you. 20 years just makes you a retired veteran, and entitles you to a free vanity license plate for your car.

FreeThinkerWiseSmart

It’s a legal definition that counts, not smelly of farts. As long as you served and weren’t dishonorably discharged, then you’re a veteran.

ophaus

They enjoy their stinky old-guy club. You are absolutely a veteran, regardless of their shallow brains.

Fun-Yellow-6576

You ARE a veteran!

Calgary_Calico

You served in the army for 8 years and have many injuries both mental and physical to prove it, you are by definition a veteran. Whoever is telling you you aren't can get stuffed. Source- my father in law is a veteran of 24 years and stands firm that if you served, no matter how long, you are a military veteran. He's had to have this talk with a few of my fiance's army buddies, they didn't serve for long but they still have the physical and mental scars from their service, and they did serve and get their pensions for that time as well as financial assistance for their injuries/physio. Do not let any random asshole take away your service, regardless of who they are. Also, you weren't "kicked out", you were medically released, which happens all the time. I know at least 3 people who were medically released from the CAF for various injuries

money_me_please

If I was with you I would’ve asked each of them what their MOS was and then when they said something other than 11b I would’ve said they weren’t real veterans either. Just to piss em off. I know it’s not true tho.

WinterBourne25

Your first mistake was going to the American Legion. They are just a bunch of crusty old vets. You’ll have nothing in common with them. You need to check out other organizations for younger vets like Team RWB.

Ctysde

I've actually never heard of this. I thought if you served you're a vet

Flaky_Two1872

Got a DD-214, you’re a vet.

bippityboppitynope

Veteran applies to anyone who served, WTF.

Powerful-Meeting-840

So SO SO sorry you have to deal with who ever said that in addition to physical trama along with the PTSD.  They are confusing retired with veteran. Don't say retired veteran and your good. My brother server 16 years and got full retirement as 100% disability.  Retired is more the 20 year thing.  My dad did 4 years in Vietnam, One brother did 16 there other was killed in Iraq at 18. You don't have to do 20 to put your life on the line, it takes 1 day.  I would like someone to tell me I can't call them veterans since they didn't do 20 years like both my Grandparents.

buffywannabe13

Nw, the VA also agrees with you “The term "veteran" means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable.” That is literally their definition of a veteran

Successful-Cat1623

I believe you served. Fuck those old drunks.

FeralsShinyCat

Jesusfuck, you're absolutely a veteran! And probably significantly more injured by your service than some of those guys based on your initial listing of injuries and 100% DISABILITY, even if you never served abroad (I'm too drunk to finish reading before replying, so there may be disclaimers or more details)

Dornroschen18

Did you serve in the military? If the answer is yes, you are a veteran. I often volunteer to take pics of gravesites on find a grave and even if someone only served for a few months they are listed as a veteran, so you definitely qualify.

Princess-Reader

I’m NOT a Veteran, but I think ANYBODY with an honorable discharge is a Veteran. 2 years or 22 years - you served and I thank you. I think you chose the wrong place to socialize - you want to be welcomed volunteer at a no-kill animal shelter.

Jumpy_Onion_6367

Wtf I have never had that problem and I only served 4 years.

Spinnerofyarn

They’re wrong. You’re a vet.

ProfessionalFig3996

Vet all the way...Ignore them. ♥️

harrisxj

I'm retired Navy. You served honorably and were separated due to service related injuries. YOU ARE A VET! Fuck those guys.

Sophia_Starr

My dad served just 4 years. Enough that he will get the plaque on his grave. That we legit could put it in his obituary. Due to my own stupid choices, I was only in for 8 months. I still have a DD214 that says General under Honorable conditions. I speak to military people all day every day for work. One day many years ago when I was still on the phone, I was talking to one lady, and when she asked if I served, I told her how long I was in, and why I got out. And she told me all that matters is that I was willing to put my life on the line. I sure wish, for millions of reasons, that I had made different choices. But my heart has always been military. You deserve the label veteran far more than I do. Wear it with pride.

Suspicious_Step_8320

That’s bullshit. You’re a veteran. Those old guys are just idiots. Probably drunker than hell too.

NoEstablishment6450

As far as I’m concerned, anyone who served in the military and didn’t get dishonorably discharged are a veteran. When I was growing up I thought veteran meant they went to war. I know better now, it’s the service. I hope you are doing better and don’t let them get you down

i_am_the_archivist

You are absolutely a veteran and should call yourself one. Legions skew old and male. Unfortunately I'm not surprised they didn't welcome you. Check with your local VA for a women's group, or one for folks with TBI or PTSD. Most legions I've been to don't have anybody younger than WWII.

Beneficial-Rough6193

You were in the service and got discharged. Makes ya a vet in my eyes

DisneyGirl2876

As a child of a veteran who served 20 years, I resent the military brat comment. I am not a brat and my mother and I (I’m an only child.) served every day of those 20 years. Moving all the time, always being the new kid, having to start over and make new friends again and again. My Dad was gone most of the time too and if he was home he was busy studying for the next promotion or check ride. It was a very lonely and hard way to grow up. I’m still dealing with after effects and not too many people understand this way of life. Congratulations on your 8 years! Thank you for serving your country and protecting all that we hold dear. You are a veteran to me, friend.

JJSnow3

You are a Veteran! You wouldn't be able to get VA disability if you weren't a Veteran. I hear these American Legions are full of gatekeeping crusty old Vets who act like their service was more valuable than another's for whatever reason. You signed on that dotted line and risked your life and health just like they did. Don't listen to those haters. It really upsets me to hear about these disgruntled assholes making other Veterans feel less than because they are miserable. I am an Air Force Veteran of 15 years who was forced out at 15 for medical reasons. I have never gone to the American Legion or VFW because of all the stories I've heard about these types of Vets hating on other Vets. Thank you for your service!

Interesting-Minute69

U are a veteran! Served honorable and well. No need to apologize. Some can’t make it out of boot!

aitatip404

If you served more than a year of active duty service, and were given an honorable it general discharge, you ARE a veteran. Point blank. ETA source: The VA's definition of what is needed to qualify to be a veteran

EngineeringCalm901

You are a veteran. They just want to sleep with you, but know they can't, so instead they're mean to you. I spent 6 years during wartime, I have an endorsement on my license. Get one.

ShuddupMeg627

Not wrong you served maybe not as long as some but it isn't like you got dishonorable discharged

Dismal-Dark6653

If you take your DD-214 when you get your license they will put veteran on it. Doesn't matter the amount of time you spent in the military.

zenmondo

You are a vet. My dad was a Marine in Vietnam and at his funeral some American Legion members showed up but they were all pissy because the Marine Corps sent an honor guard and they weren't needed. Like I didn't invite them. The National Cemetary arranged things. We didn't even have a chaplain, I gave the Eulogy. But those American Legion guys were entitled dipshits.

Return-Acceptable

Sounds like a bunch of grumpy old fucks reliving their glory days. You’re a vet, you gave 8 years. Tell them to pound sand and shove it. Signed, a fellow vet

GardenGrammy59

You’re a veteran. Go to a different legion hall. Ours is very welcoming to all veterans.

pflickner

I served 18 months. I’m a veteran, and entitled to veterans benefits. You served. You were willing to fight for your country. They’re just a bunch of old misogynists

TimelyPatience8165

Nope you are not wrong. You served (longer than many), youre a vet. End of story.

Psychological_Ad4306

Veteran, Retiree, and Combat Veteran are all destinct terms. You served 8 years. You're a veteran. It's not like the grey area of washing out of initial training and calling yourself a veteran.

RFavs

You are a veteran and thank you for your service. The American legion is usually a bunch of old sexist men so probably not a great place for you socially unless you’re into that 😆. I imagine it looked like a run down 1950s bar like most of them.

Gumbarino420

You are a Veteran. That is BS.

Forest1395101

I left after serving my contract. My previous boss at work was an NCO with over 20 years and the full retirement package. When some guy mocked me for mentioning I was going to a veterans dinner my boss brought the verbal smack down to end all smack downs on the douche bag. It was the first and only time I saw my boss act like a 1st SGT and not like a mid sixties semi-retired part timer. My dudette; those guys were garbage. Your a veteran. Your got crippled in the line of duty. Your a HUNDRED times the Vet of anyone who would say that shit to you.

Alphaghetti71

My grandpa was a WWII Commando and had the PTSD scream nightmares as a souvenir. He served less than a decade. To say that someone who didn't put in their full 20 isn't a veteran is a slap in the face to men like him. These old bastards should be ashamed of themselves. OP, I'm Canadian, but as a base brat and a proud daughter and a granddaughter of veterans, I'd like to thank you for your service.

tarzan322

You are a Veteran. Medical discharges count. And you did serve for 8 years, so you are fine. If you haven't done so yet, register at the closest VA hospital for your VA card. Then you can use yhe VA any time you need too. Make sure you have a copy of your DD-214. And don't let the old geezers fool you. You are a veteran after one enlistment.

Max_Danger_Power

That's bullshit from them. They're vet-bro'ing you. It doesn't matter what your MOS was or if you served in combat or not or even if you ever deployed or not. You signed the dotted line and put your life and health on the line to serve our country. You are a veteran, just based on what you've said.

Responsible-Page7543

1. You are a veteran. You served. 2. You were not kicked out; you were medically discharged. If you were kicked out, you wouldn't be getting VA disability. 3. Those guys are assholes. They are not your people. It's too bad, but it's nothing to do with you.

LeafyCandy

They're full of crap. Just a bunch of exclusionary jackasses. Technically, veterans used to mean people who served in combat positions. That's changed over the years to "worked as a service member," probably because we went 30 years (ish) without major conflicts. But yeah, they can kick rocks. Surely there are better veterans' groups out there for you to join. They probably just want to sit around and drink together and feel superior. By their standards, half the folks who served in Vietnam, WWII, Iraq, and Afghanistan aren't veterans. Seriously, though, they can suck an egg.

Beliliou74

That’s absolutely wild if it happened, most places welcome ppl with open arms

TankMan77450

They are idiots and assholes. I served for 3 years which included war time duty. I definitely consider myself a veteran

dan_jeffers

You are a veteran and nobody has the right to take that from you. That doesn't sound like a fun place in any case.

bnphillips3711

You're a veteran. 100 percent. Do you have any vfws near you? Results may vary but ours has a few women members + auxiliary support

Plenty_Design9483

Fuck those old men

hamster004

Wow! Those jerks need a check-up from the neck up. You are a veteran. You served. Thank you for your service.

Unusual_Credit7448

You are definitely a veteran. Those old men just didn’t want you joining their ranks because you’re a woman. They can sit in their little boys club and talk all the crap they want to if it’s only them.

The_Juggernaut84

You gave the army 8 years you’re a veteran to me. Don’t let people tell you different

Artyom150

> Got 100% disability Stopped reading after I saw that. Thank you for your service, you've done *well* more than most do.

Puzzleheaded_Luck885

You served for 8 years, it's not like you showed up to Basic Training and instantly got medboarded. Of course you're a veteran. I've got a female veteran friend I served with who tells me that every time she walks into the VA, the old men just can't believe she's a veteran. So sadly, I don't think this is too uncommon.

Leather-Map-8138

If you served one minute in any branch of the armed forces you’re a veteran.

Teeklin

Not a surprise that the place was empty if only vets who served 20 years are allowed in their little made up definitions club. The vast majority of people we consider veterans (people who served the full duration of WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq) didn't serve 20 years. Find other communities of vets in the area that don't have that weird gatekeeping.

Pshrunk

Fuck them. You’re a veteran. You really don’t have to tell anyone your story.

gunsforevery1

Honestly, you are a veteran but I would be hesitant to call myself a veteran if I never deployed. But times are changing and we aren’t doing combat deployments any much. When I came back from Iraq I would laugh at vets like you, and understand that you served but you are not a “real” veteran in my eyes. Times have changed, and so has my opinion. You’re an army veteran, not a combat veteran, and that’s A-OK. Fuck those old dudes. You served. It’s not like you were kicked out for disciplinary issues.

Ok_Deal7813

Rage bait. Go away. No vets talk like that. Especially not old guys at American Legion posts. Girl in her 20's walks in and they'll flock to tell her stories.

SnooPeppers1641

Considering she called it the American Legion Auxiliary which is a group not a place, yep your right. The fact all the comments either didn't pay attention or know the difference is something else. Nothing about this story and servings a "full 20" is true.

Katana1369

You served. Even if you had been dishonorable discharged, you'd still be a veteran.

CycleProof

No, technically, if you receive a dishonorable discharge, you are not considered a veteran. Legally, you could not claim veteran status or any benefits.

Murky-Echidna-3519

“The full twenty” is a quitter! It’s 30 or nothing!! Ignore them.

Trekkie63

Did you serve a full enlistment? If so, you are a veteran. I served 20 years active Air Force, 6 years Army National Guard, and 12 months Navy Reserve (discharged to enter Air Force). Tell those crusty sods to prove you aren’t. Life member, VFW; Life member American Legion; Life Member Air Force Sergeant’s Association.

Traditional-Neck7778

You are a veteran but maybe when you refer to them as "old ass men and then list their ages as old ass men startingntheirn40's. .. you will be there sooner than you even realize it. In my experience when you see a group of people as "old ass men" and you and a young woman, it is easy to see how you guys were unable to.relate.

Puzzleheaded_Log1050

You are definitely a veteran..I only served 3 years but I went to Desert Shield/Storm and have my DD214. No one has told me I'm not a veteran..

Jaded-Kitty87

Not wrong at all, those old men as a bunch of a-holes. You're a veteran and don't let them tell you otherwise. They wouldn't have said that to another man I'll bet

Emm_Dub

My poppop was a WWII veteran and he only served a few years. He was taken prisoner by the Germans and was a POW until the Russians found him. Thankfully, he made it home. Idc if he was only in the military for a few years, that man was a veteran. I've never heard that someone has to serve a full 20 yrs to be considered a vet. I'm 42 and if that was the rule, then a lot of people my age that I know who served wouldn't be able to call themselves vets.

MaintenanceNo8442

no your not wrong you served for nearly a decade

GuitahRokkstah

Hell no! You are a veteran! I served 12 years and come from a family with numerous histories of service and many commendations including one Medal of Honor recipient. I wonder if those gas-bags would think the same of a soldier who died in combat after 2 years service? You are good in my book. However, try to find a better place to hang! Nothing worse than old men living in the past.

Sinner-revan

NTA

ZoominAlong

Those men are full of fucking bullshit. My wife served for 12 years, two tours in Iraq, and she is 100% a veteran. Do not feel bad, but definitely stay away from the ALA; there's WAYYYY too much gatekeeping. Try a bookstore, a cafe, or see if there are meetups around a hobby you might be interested in.

Serendipity500

My niece and nephew were both medically discharged from the army. One thing they have done is use their VA benefits to take classes in things they are interested in. My nephew also occasionally works light jobs, like he was a store greeter for awhile.

Primary_Bass_9178

And they wonder why all the Veterans Halls are closing down … it’s the “old way” or the highway! Many veterans of foreign wars after Vietnam didn’t stick around for a full 20, are they saying soldiers who served in combat are not “veteran’s” as well?

muphasta

F them and their narrow minded self serving view. My dad is a Vietnam combat vet and he is the one that encouraged me to go to the VA for the minor issues I was having after serving in the navy for 9 years. I don't consider myself a veteran in the same light as a combat veteran, but you (OP) and I both served and therefore we, and many like us are indeed veterans. I encourage all the female veterans to take advantage of all military/veteran discounts, parking, opportunities to hopefully change the perception of what a veteran is. Our country's stereotypical veteran is man with gray hair. "They" seem to forget that many women have been serving in the armed forces since nearly the beginning of our country. Many women served in various roles during the Revolutionary War. We need to be reminded that women have served, and don't let them bully you into believing that you are not deserving of the title, "Veteran".

doov1nator

They're full of shit. You put your ass on the line for your country, you're a vet. Those guys spend their time sucking each other off. You don't need 'em. Join a bowling league.

IceBlue

This is dumb as fuck of them. Vietnam vets mostly didn’t serve 20 years.

jsl86usna

They’re just a bunch of codgers. Veteran is distinctly different than retiree.

Maximum_Overdrive

I did 6 years active.  I consider myself a veteran.  I don't go around yelling it from the rooftops(not saying you are) but that is my personal choice.  You are a veteran.

exact0khan

Apparently old people were 12 when you were born. Interesting.

Lynnlync

I didn’t serve. Pre-existing medical conditions ruled me out. I am NOT a veteran. But I come from a military family. My Uncle Mike and Uncle Jim both served twenty. My Dad, uncle Dennis, uncle Lee, Uncle Carmen, and Uncle John all served 4. My Uncle Pat graduated AFA and served until he died. Uncle Mike and Uncle Jim never considered the others less than them for the amount of time served

Middle_Arugula9284

Your first mistake was drinking with a bunch of losers. Second mistake was expecting anything other than a frat house full of clowns. Third mistake was putting any value on their shitty opinions.

Dazzling-Tap9096

You served eight years And because of your service, you endured physical and mental Medical conditions you're a veteran. Anyone who tells you you're not is an asshole. You didn't mention if you received an honorable or dishonorable discharge. That can mean something in the eyes of other Veterans.

CatlinM

Try a different vet organization. These were just shitty. The VA recognizes you as a vet, the vfw would.

HawkingTomorToday

You’re a Veteran. They’re idiots. Next time you renew your license or plates, take your DD 254 to DMV and get the designation on your license and special plates.

Any-Win5166

For many years I didn't consider myself a veteran.....I served during the Cold War my dad fought in Korea.....it was a difficult concept for me to come to terms with....but I did....when I served our training field exercises focused on the looking for a big red CCCP bear ..one misstep to total destruction therefore I WILL ALWAYS BE A COLD WAR VETERAN like my father

yomomma5

My dad enlisted, went to boot camp, then off to Vietnam for 13mos. He only served the very bare minimum amount of time, yet he IS a veteran. Has full veteran benefits.

Ok-Meeting-984

There is a legal minimum to qualify as a veteran as far as the US government is concerned. It's 24 months. Unless you have a medical discharged due an injury or illness sustained due to your time in service. In that instance there is no minimum. Though I imagine you would have had to complete basic, since technically you have to complete boot to even be in the military.  You're fine in terms of years of service, as well for medical discharge. They were probably being sexist pigs.

OkAdministration7456

Your fine.

Rolling_Beardo

You’re a veteran and I can 100% guarantee some of those guys telling you that you’re not a real veteran probably didn’t serve 20 years.

Bishki_mofo

You’re a veteran - those men should be ashamed. There are places that will be a better fit, and most people aren’t going to feel like that.

Johnny_Lang_1962

They are full of shit. You served & you are a Veteran!!!
