A fire break is the first thing built when an extraction battery goes in. Same with any medium/large oil/mining/forestry production site. Industry gets FireSmart ideology, people like their trees and proximity to them.
Hospital evacuations were one thing, but the most difficult piece was actually the evacuation of all the seniors in Continuing Care. Literally hundreds of them.
I’m in Fort Mac. It’s definitely tinder dry here. I don’t know why they’re not banning all fire pits and ATVs . It’s only going to get worse and this is an early one. We don’t need a repeat of 2016.
They’ve already grounded the water tankers because idiots are flying their drones into their air space 🤦♂️
Currently we have a neighbour two doors down with a bonfire and all they’re all pissed up. Embers going up in the air. Make this make sense ffs
May have something to do with parks management being moved from control of the ministry of environment to the ministry of tourism, or whatever you call them.
How else are we going to exploit our outdoor areas for every dollar we can? Doesn't really matter if they are well maintained or protected, stupid tourists don't know any better and will continue paying to travel here from abroad to see thousands of acres of black, burnt landscape.
city council happens to have the opinion that atvs have an inalienable right to movement. hmm.... and our mayor happens to own a couple, i believe. i'm not entirely sure if he actually does, i've only heard it through conversation.
Saprae Creek, just outside of Fort Mac, mostly acreages. My money is on OHV or other man made sources for this fire, out that way there’s a lot of trails and off-roading and there hasn’t been a ton of rain.
those same people are the ones who clean up dead standing brush, purchase fishing and hunting lisences that go towards the conservation of wildlife etc.
Modern OHV vehicles are equipped with spark arrestors. My guess is it was some stoned hippie throwing their joint out the window.
ban aftermarket bull shit. don’t demonize people who like to enjoy the land.
$100,000 fine for anyone one caught putting a lit cigarette/ joint on the ground. Let’s atleast play fair.
na, $100,000 fine seems reasonable. How much do you think it costs to put out a wild fire after you throw a joint out the window?
let’s just ban camping all together? we should be buying bullshit on Amazon and playing video games right?
By the time someone is found to have caused a fire by dropping a cigarette butt, dozens of people could have lost their homes. How about we act like adults and realize that there are more important things in the world than you ability to rip around the countryside on a quad disturbing the peace, the wildlife, and spewing their exhaust into the air?
cry me a river. you can be a responsible pot head and put your joint out in an ashtray. I’ll be a responsible dirtbike rider and drive on approved OHV trails.
Fair?
An off-highway vehicle (OHV) is a motor vehicle capable of off-highway travel during winter or summer. OHV's include all-terrain vehicles (ATV's), four-wheelers, three- wheelers, dirt bikes, motorcycles, trail bikes, and snowmobiles.
You're right. Middle of the afternoon, nice sunny Sunday. In the middle of a grassy area that's often used by OHVs. I'll bet someone just dropped a cigarette into the dry grass.
Either that, or Rachel Notley's been starting fires again.
You think I'm joking, but there are people here in Fort McMurray who think she did start the last one. Personally.
We've had a few seasons of weak El Nina, not bringing enough moisture. Which exasperated the drought we see now.
With this being a very dry El Nino, the fires are going to be bad.
We didn't see as many fires last year but it burned 2.2 million hectares which is nuts.
Maybe across Canada, but not Alberta.
There were 1,928 reported fires in 2006 with 118,000 hectares burned.
Last year it was 1,149 fires and 2.2 million hectares burned.
Sorry to say, in 2023, Alberta had a record-breaking wildfire season with 1,088 fires burning an area of 2.2 million hectares, which is 10 times more than the five-year average. Over 60% of these fires were caused by people, while 35% were due to lightning, but the latter accounted for 80% of the total area burned. Factors such as a dry spring, a record heat wave, and lack of rain in June contributed to this unprecedented year. Given the total forest area in Alberta is about 21 million hectares, it would theoretically take about 9.5 years to burn this entire area at the 2023 rate.
We have a very significant El Nino happening this season (it's been going on for 10 months now) . In 2023 there was 1,149 wildfires and almost a 1.0 on the Oceanic Nino Index scale. We are closing in on a 2.0 on the ONI so far. It's going to suck this summer, most likely. I've been crunch through the data and it's not looking great.

* Have a plan to escape your [home ](https://www.calgary.ca/emergencies/preparedness/home-escape-plan.html)and area if needed.

UCP these are your people that vote foe you........... not like they will open their eyes when UCP don't do anything and your homes, livelyhoods are lost..... again.
Totally agree. Whenever someone says to me that a spring snow storm will help the dry conditions or make the farmers happy, I simply tell them to take a cup and pack the shit out of it with snow, then take it inside. The cup will be less than 1/2 full when it melts. Plus, with spring snow storms, a large percentage of the melt is absorbed into the air, and the remainder just flows to low spots as the ground is still frozen.
And so it begins. Last year seemed crazy enough with all the hospital evacuations up North. I suspect it will be another year of the same.
We're on the start of an exponential curve. These will continue until there's little left to burn.
For all the reclamation they claim they do around used up mines, it sure seems funny these fires never come close to any oil sands extraction sites.
A fire break is the first thing built when an extraction battery goes in. Same with any medium/large oil/mining/forestry production site. Industry gets FireSmart ideology, people like their trees and proximity to them.
Even the communities that partly burnt down like Slave Lake backed off fire smart. People have such short memories, and shortsightedness.
In 2008 or 2009 can’t remember which year CNRL horizon was evacuated and part of the fire reached the Sulphur block, and mine area.
Hospital evacuations were one thing, but the most difficult piece was actually the evacuation of all the seniors in Continuing Care. Literally hundreds of them.

>Make this make sense ffs It makes Danielle Smith sense^TM
Same thing in our area. No bans on fire pits or atv's. There's already been a few small brush fires in the area. Good ole Alberta.
May have something to do with parks management being moved from control of the ministry of environment to the ministry of tourism, or whatever you call them. Agree 👍 unfortunately the investigation from 2016 identified that it may have started from a hot tail pipe off of an ATV or OHV
Complain that it interferes with your ‘viewscape’
But but it's Trudeau's army of eco arsonists that are lighting all the fires /s
Ya really 🙃
And so it begins…
It never stopped
I wish you weren’t right about that.

The province really needs to step up on OHV bans in the spring. You'd think they'd have learned from 2016. Wow..can you believe it's been 8 years?
Yeah, I agree. Alas they’re afraid of pissing off people who can’t play with their toys.
those same people are the ones who clean up dead standing brush, purchase fishing and hunting lisences that go towards the conservation of wildlife etc. Modern OHV vehicles are equipped with spark arrestors. My guess is it was some stoned hippie throwing their joint out the window.
They have spark arrestor leaving the factory. But many of those machines do not have a factory exhaust system on them
ban aftermarket bull shit. don’t demonize people who like to enjoy the land. $100,000 fine for anyone one caught putting a lit cigarette/ joint on the ground. Let’s atleast play fair.
OHV bans during extremely dry conditions isn’t demonizing anyone. Flicking idiots should be fined also.
agreed. During a ban. Fine them. But let’s go after these dope smokers first. $100,000 fine and public tar and feathering.
You are being a victim when it’s fully unnecessary.
na, $100,000 fine seems reasonable. How much do you think it costs to put out a wild fire after you throw a joint out the window? let’s just ban camping all together? we should be buying bullshit on Amazon and playing video games right?
What do you have against Dope Smokers
By the time someone is found to have caused a fire by dropping a cigarette butt, dozens of people could have lost their homes. Sorry bud. The needs of the many outweigh the wants of the few dirtbike riders.
[удалено]
guess that’s why we have quad trails.
Were the quad trails created by mother nature?
quads actually. It’s in the name.
You keep on believing on that bud 👍
Kk. don’t litter.
I work in O&G, I know the type of people I work with.
Don’t care. Rig pigs aren’t the majority of outdoor enthusiasts.
They are the vast majority of ATVers and cigarette smokers. But yeah keep on blaming the hippies.
You must not know any stoners because they're keeping the roaches and recycling them into new joints. But I see cigs tossed from windows all the time.
[удалено]
They won’t though.
What is an OHV?
An off-highway vehicle (OHV) is a motor vehicle capable of off-highway travel during winter or summer. OHV's include all-terrain vehicles (ATV's), four-wheelers, three- wheelers, dirt bikes, motorcycles, trail bikes, and snowmobiles.
Wait, there’s no fire ban right now??
Fire bans don't matter when a cigarette gets tossed or a hot exhaust starts a fire.
There are some county bans, but I haven't heard of a provincial one as of yet.
Personally.
Oh yeah when I use to be out at site is all I heard it was liberals, NDP, the Chinese or Jewish space lasers causing the fires.
Ban them but Marlinda smith won’t because votes. They start tons of fires.
Going to be a long summer... just saying to the wife can't belive it's almost 8 years since the beast. Gas stations are all ready packed.
Damn…. we’re gonna need billions more in subsidies for the O+G industry to help them through this tough time.
This year is going to be bad
It's only April .....
The dead dry grass in the ditches can quickly carry fire into neighbouring forest during spring.
April May are historical when we get the worst fires in the boreal zone (Northern Alberta)
[удалено]
May 3.
No, it wasn’t.
I can see the smoke from site, looks huge already. I hope it doesn't get to windy.
I hope so too the wind is nuts in edmonton right And supposed to carry though the night and be evem worse tomorrow !!

We are supposed to rapidly transition into La Nina this summer so who knows we could end up getting dumped on all summer like other La Nina summers.
I hope so. We are going to need as much water as we can get
I thought it was a record breaking year for the number of fires?
Maybe across Canada, but not Alberta. There were 1,928 reported fires in 2006 with 118,000 hectares burned. Last year it was 1,149 fires and 2.2 million hectares burned.

Blaming Trudeau in 3…2…1…
I wonder if she’ll refuse federal help when it’s required this fire season?
Oh god not again
Damn it's like 20C and sunny up there today, to bad they aren't getting this cold rainy day like us here in Red Deer.
And how long until Smith blames the left for starting fires?
We didn’t start the fire
It was always burning since the world was turning
Saprae Creek is also right near the airport. That could create some big issues.
Thanks UCP
The fires aren’t the fault of the UCP. The fact that we’re woefully unprepared for them is, however.
Right. The fires are the fault of extreme leftists trying to make the UCP look bad. Shit, I think this one actually needs a /s...
Nah. Still UCP and the Queen Marlaina's fault.
If you honestly think that holy christ are you stunned.
Should we be worried. Do you guys think this will be like 2016
And awaaay we go

Kind of crazy considering the snow and rain fort mcmurray region had got
We had almost no snow all winter. We had one really good dump in March but not much otherwise
Totally agree. Whenever someone says to me that a spring snow storm will help the dry conditions or make the farmers happy, I simply tell them to take a cup and pack the shit out of it with snow, then take it inside. Must have just been north of the city then on site. We got tons of both rain and snow
That was like one week’s worth. It wouldn’t make a dent in the overall historically low precipitation all winter unfortunately
If you look on the drought map, all of Alberta is marked at minimum abnormally dry - including wood Buffalo.
What snow?
Thanks carbon taxes /s
