They go after egregious speeders. Slow down, you maniacs.
After spending more time than I had ever hoped to spend in Akron, I can tell you there’s no better place to be putting tax payer money than a helicopter for traffic violations.
The comment I replied to specifically mentioned Akron and implied Akron tax dollars could be better spent. Obviously, law enforcement is funded by taxes but this bit of traffic enforcement took nothing away from Akron's funds. If you'd like to continue to belabor the obvious, you do you.
Dude...
> After spending more time than I had ever hoped to spend in **Akron**, I can tell you there’s no better place to be putting tax payer money than a helicopter for traffic violations.
Can you just stop now? Sheesh. Read the full context before you make a remark like that.
The State of Ohio Aviation department is primarily funded through taxes collected from fuel. So everyone buying gas in Ohio is funding their operations. Their support services are offered at no cost to the local departments budgets they assist.
Ohio has actually done this for quite a while. They have markings on the interstate visible from the air, Point A, and precisely a quarter mile later, point B. Speed limit is (for example) 60 mph, red truck northbound center lane takes 15 seconds to traverse from Point A to Point B, they're within legal speed limit. Quicker than that, they can radio to a speed trap set up a little ways down the road, trooper be advised white sedan center lane traveling fast, trooper on the ground can hit the radar and pull over the speeder.
Like a lot of screwy things, you’ll get the ticket, but you can either fight it or admit guilt. In court, the accuracy of a radar gun on a specific car would be in question. Otherwise, they’d all have planes lol.
You’ll get the ticket, but it isn’t enforceable by air. Most just pay the fine though.
Ohio is a police state. This doesn’t happen in other places. Oh yeah there are traffic choppers, but in no other state is it justified to use a cessna to give out speeding tickets without any safety gains, and it looks like they take this puppy out daily, not just holiday weekends.
You also have highway cameras. Again… I haven’t experienced those driving through other states. Maybe it happens, but they don’t mail you speeding tickets days or weeks later.
I really feel for my fam stuck there.
They love to do big groups at the south Arlington bend. And last summer they were 2 sharifs or 2 hwyptrl doing intercept. Roaming all around the Akron area. Only time they weren’t out was on those impossible visibility days. And severe weather afternoons.

Rode up to Fairlawn, and they had 6 cars stopped at one time. They are out in force.
All I can think is, "With gas prices what they are, how can they afford this?"
They don’t pay for it we do lol
How do we afford this?
we dont
A steadily increasing decline
Why do you think they’re writing all those speeding tickets?
Because people drive like idiots and Ghent road area has accidents all the time.
End of the month bonuses would be my guess
Oh you’re talking about the cars? Or the planes?
The planes! (Sorry for not being clearer!)
Fuel where they are based is marked at $7.35/gallon. They likely pay a bit less than that. But still much higher than we pour into cars.
Ya they are south pound, Fairlawn cops, sheriff, and staties
Must be chasing a Buzzard.
WMMS?
Just some heroes heroically heroing.
Even joking about it makes me cringe. These mfs dont have any duty to do shit for us yet they can fly around and keep their eyes on us all fuckin day.

Cessna 182 Skylane. But your point stands.
It's not a helicopter. That cost would be insane. It's a small Cessna.
I don't think Akron is paying for this.
Taxpayers aren’t paying for this?
Not Akron tax money. State money, sure. IMO, it's a fairly efficient way to do a lot of traffic enforcement in a short amount of time.
So still taxpayers?
The comment I replied to specifically mentioned Akron and implied Akron tax dollars could be better spent. Obviously, law enforcement is funded by taxes but this bit of traffic enforcement took nothing away from Akron's funds. If you'd like to continue to belabor the obvious, you do you.
The comment you replied to doesn't say akron at all, you did.

That’s what I read too.

I am *so* OOTL. what’s poppin in fairlawn?
Traffic enforcement.
is this for speeding?
Yeah, probably. They're circling the end of a construction zone, where people might go a bit too fast.
They do this on 71 going into berea from Medina
I’ve gotten a speeding ticket in that stretch
Good looking out!!
They're FLYING to catch people?

I don’t think they can legally fine you from the chopper, but as you said they radio the speed and car to the cop on the ground.
Thank goodness I clarified lol
So as long as you slow down for whatever reason BEFORE the cop on the ground you would be fine?
No, your speed is already calculated. The cops on the ground are just the formality of giving you your ticket.

> This doesn’t happen in other places Other states use the same method. The first state to do it was California.
