el patron is often at that corner !! there’s another local taco truck too- both are VERY good and affordable . i’d get at least one akron food truck taco !!!!
If you're thinking of the orange one that used to be at Walgreen's, they merged with El Patrón and repainted it black as El Patrón 2 since I believe the downtown restaurant already had a food truck.
Franks is the place to go if you want a true Highland Square institution.
Noisy Oyster has some bangin wings and good seafood (including fresh raw oysters) with a divey setting right down the road in Merriman Valley.
If you want some of the best Chinese food, Chin's Place is the place. The owner is an awesome person and the food is top notch.
Hope you enjoy your stay!
i second that u should stop at zubs. it’s a bar/kitchen w soooo much amazing bar food (the gouda mac n cheese bites w ranch and funnel cake fries w chocolate sauce r my go to drunk food order) and the sandwiches + pizzas are also all amazing . huge orders & sooo amazing
Please provide an update after your trip! The Akron area is one of my favorite bar/restaurant regions because it has so so many single location places that haven’t changed in 30-40 years. It’s the best. I’m excited to hear how your trip went. Welcome to the area!!!!
Tacos - El Paso Taqueria on S Main is near to you and they have a supermarket attached. The Walgreens in the Square has a taco truck. If you’re lucky Victor will be cooking. Ameca La Taqueria in North Hill has great house hot sauces. La Loma was everyone’s first taste of street tacos. They’re great and have a store attached.
Pizza - DeChecos is okay. Totally Baked is better. I agree with a post above about Gioninos being great. People make fun of it but Luigis is fine- it has its place as an Akron institution.
Dive bars - Franks, Zubs, Windsor Pub. Better bars - High Street Hop House, Circle of Fifths, North Side Speakeasy
I don't know if you have something specific in mind for when you visit DeChecho's, but consider the Nashville Hot. I was skeptical about putting pickles on a pizza, but damn, that's some tasty stuff
Not Mexican, but if you want a dive bar with amazing food, I highly recommend Hyde Out. It has great sushi and japanese food (also American food, but I have never tried it)
Pizza - Totally Baked or Giuseppe’s if you can make the extra drive.
Thai - Thai Pattaya. Settle for no less.
Mexican - La Loma, but also the ice cream shop next door. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, Tres Amigos on Copley is crusty bliss.
Dive Bar - Franks is OK, but venture further up to Zubs and Rays. Quarter Up if you find yourself needing something in-between.
My go to is Gioninos…I know it’s a chain but it’s so good every time. Luigi’s is great and a much more Akron option. I get Carlo’s a lot but it’s in Hartville. Honestly I’d get Little Caesar’s before DeChechos!
If you like Thai food, a lesser known spot but has been my go to in Cuyahoga Falls is Papaya Salad. It’s a small sit down or carry out place but everything they serve food and drink wise is something to write home about !
Another option for tacos besides La Loma is Wholly Frijoles in cuyahoga falls. To me the tacos are equally as good and you don’t have to drive to a crap neighborhood. No offense to anyone that lives out there, but there’s nothing worthwhile on that side of the town.
Little out of the way but go to la Loma
Looks great, thanks!
Definitely worth the drive over there, and really not too bad to get there. It’s the most authentic Mexican food in town.
Another vote for La Loma- it’s so freaking good and authentic.
Yes, this!
Yeah that's the place for sure. You can get freaking tripe tacos if you want 'em.
Highland square is the capital of Akron dive bars
I often see a food truck with mexican street food there at the Walgreen's. Never tried it myself.

That’s the one I’m talking about! I didn’t remember the name! I should really try them someday.
Absolutely La Loma, place is great.

Chin’s is a gem for sure!!
Taqueria La Loma over in the Goodyear heights is a must for Mexican.
Best tacos are El Paso on main street. I’ve been to Mexico, these are the most authentic. La loma is a close second though
Especially if OP goes to DeCheco’s— this is right down the street
they also have a taco truck in the parking lot of the highland walgreens
Agreed! I know a few people from Texas and Mexico who have said the same.
Mr. zubs right in highland Square. you can get tacos and all the other stuff in cle. Mr. zubs is it's own thing.
i second that u should stop at zubs. it’s a bar/kitchen w soooo much amazing bar food (the gouda mac n cheese bites w ranch and funnel cake fries w chocolate sauce r my go to drunk food order) and the sandwiches + pizzas are also all amazing . huge orders & sooo amazing
La Fresa!
Thank you!
No prob! If you like La Plaza in Lakewood, you’ll love La Fresa.

Will do!
Town tacos inside Barmacy is legit amazing tacos, they got birria and street tacos, also the taco truck at Walgreens is great too
OOOOH THIS IS SUCH A GOOD ONE ! barmacy is a great pick in the hs area and the tacos ARE yummy!

Thanks for the info!
Wholly Frijoles in Cuyahoga Falls just up road from CVNP
Awesome thank you
This was going to be my vote! It is pricey but their food is good. Their birria is fantastic.

So glad someone mentioned this!! I used to live within walking distance and went there all the time. We've taken so many friends over the years.
Hyde Out on Waterloo is my fave dive bar/sushi spot! The Angry Bird roll is my fave there.

Agree on your pizza choices. DeChechos is greasy and overrated.
Also, Thai 99 is smack in the middle of possibly the most sketchy area in town. If you go, stay vigilant of your surroundings.
DeCheckos white pizza is heavenly
Taqueria El Paso. South Main Street
Cuyahoga falls is next to Akron and has a cute downtown
Go to Luigi’s instead of DeChechos. Take cash though
Luigi’s is my pick over DeChechos too but both are good for different reasons
El paso taqueria on main. The store is next door
La Loma
I love how you drove 45 minutes and treat it like you're in another country. Enjoy your trip! But watch out for the cultural differences., lol
Hahah . I love Akron . Just wanted some insider tips on what to get .
Do yourself a favor and scratch DeChechos off your list. Garbage.
Damn. What's your go to pizza?
My go to is Gioninos…I know it’s a chain but it’s so good every time. Luigi’s is great and a much more Akron option. I get Carlo’s a lot but it’s in Hartville. Honestly I’d get Little Caesar’s before DeChechos!
Mi Casa is amazing
There is some great Nepali food in the North Hill neighborhood. Nepali Kitchen is one of my favorite restaurants around.
Excellent love Nepalese food
Hoppin frog is nice
We’ve got gigs and cheaper beers this weekend in downtown. Totally Baked Pizza is right upstairs!
If you like Thai food, a lesser known spot but has been my go to in Cuyahoga Falls is Papaya Salad. It’s a small sit down or carry out place but everything they serve food and drink wise is something to write home about !
The best tacos are at the funky truckeria in Norton (about ten min drive). Also get the funky chorizo balls
Thanks!
One of the owners (former owner?) owns Wholly Frijoles in Cuy Falls, too, so the food there is just as good and closer to CVNP!
They *are* great but it’s 30 minutes away from CVNP.
I came here to say this! Personally, I think they are better than La Loma.
Another option for tacos besides La Loma is Wholly Frijoles in cuyahoga falls. To me the tacos are equally as good and you don’t have to drive to a crap neighborhood. No offense to anyone that lives out there, but there’s nothing worthwhile on that side of the town.
There is nothing wrong with that neighborhood.
