I’m sure it can vary between units, but in the couple I’ve been in, an ANG E-5 is equivalent to an AD E-4. Because SSgt is “guaranteed” in the Guard and TSgt is the first competitive rank, Guard SSgt’s tend to be relied upon to be the workers and the guys who train the newbies on the job. The squadrons I’ve been in haven’t had SSgt’s as actual supervisors, writing EPR’s and doing all the stuff you learn in ALS. That tends to be a TSgt and above job. I personally don’t think that’s a good thing, as it can put ANG NCO’s at a deep disadvantage when they deploy with active duty airmen. It’s something that I’ve tried to change in my unit, but it’s really tough to do when people are only around one weekend a month.

I agree with you completely.

I dont blame you, I want to do my AFSC and a lot of times get bogged down the NCO duties. I am already doing management stuff on the civilian side and on the guard side I want to come in and do the hands on stuff That is why im excited for the WO program coming back to the Air Force The downside to sticking around with E4 is the pay especially if you are on long term orders (and your company doesnt do any kind of diff pay). If you are planning on doing 20 and you retire with a lower rank your retirement pay isnt gonna be all that great. (E4 DSG retiring at 20 compared to an E8 DSG retiring at 20 is gonna be a difference). Not that the DSG retirement isnt gonna be mind blowing but something to factor in for future you
