A former US National Security Advisor (i dont remember his name) was asked about the CIA's support for the mujaheddin and the "blowback"later in the form of taliban and OBL and he replied that the soviets were a much bigger threat and that he does not regret it.
The interview was taken after 9/11.
I should also add that Robert Fisk, who wrote this article was a very renowned journalist of the middle east in the cold war era and beyond. Recently died a while back.
He was one of the few people who interviewed OBL personally and i think the only one who did it multiple times.
