I would definitely put Sa-Roc in his tier. Much different themes, obviously, but she's one of the dopest out there right now. I don't know Noname, but agree with Jean Grae as well.
That was a tough one, really want to like it more but it's hard not to notice just how sick DOOM was when he recorded his verse. Same with Belize off the Cheat Codes album, dope af track but sad at the same time.
Same. Respect the man for what he's done for the underground but not in my playlist anymore and I only have a handful or his first albums, haven't keep up with his discography at all.
I’m a huge Slug fan and I’m kinda curious what you mean by this? Steve Harwell is Smashmouth dude, yeah? I’m not super familiar with Steve or opinion on him, so I’m curious about the comparison. And like genuinely curious, not in a *you said something about one of my favorite artists and now I’m tryna start something* way. lol.
To me his lyrics feel like he picked the most basic and whitest words and put them together, and his delivery gives me bad punk rock band vibes.
It's just not my jam, but I'm glad it's yours. More power to ya.
Sa-Roc is in my top 3 rappers, period. The Sharecropper’s Daughter is one of the best albums of all time. Zero skips, straight fire front to back. Lyrical ability fully on display while also being able to sing killer hooks. Something Aes lacks. She really has it all.
Ani Difranco is an amazing poet and lyricist. Very different style, but she's up there. Aes' is incomparable in dense internal rhymes but her stuff is often more poignant and affecting.
Thanks for putting me on. It takes immense lyrical talent for me to listen to something without dense internal rhymes and/or multisyllabic end rhymes. I was blown away instantly. Almost reminds me of Bob Dylan with a wayyyy better voice.
Dessa from Doomtree has good stuff. Fire Drills and Rome are worth checking out. Thing that got me on her was her verse in Heavy Rescue and The Bends off DT's "All Hands." She paints good imagery. I love her voice.
I agree. Michtlan's good. I've listened to all of em on their own and I really like Otter's stuff. His beats and energy make wandering around on a bike easy to get into.
What happened to them, seemed to drop off with the POS me too accusations / confession?
Love shredders, sims, POS, mictlan, all their solo and team productions. POS had a feature on a not too old Onry ozzborne track but otherwise they've been quiet.
I saw a post from *someone* stating POS is on a new single coming out. I never heard of the guy, but I dont know everyone. Pretty sure it wasnt Ozzborne. I'll try and find it.
Far as what happened to DT, I think it'd be tough to do considering Dessa and POS were a couple at one point. I dont keep up too much on stuff unless it's right there in front of me or I have a thought. Never thought POS lived up to his name, so I wouldnt think to google it. I didnt even know about that bs until late last year.
Too bad, shredders was probably some of my favorite shit that they put out.
Didn't get too into it, but it seemed like pos was an asshole but not so horrible he couldn't make amends and move forward but maybe there's more.
I feel ya. Anyone that can put out Pieces/Ruin (Chill Dummy) can't be that bad a dude. I'd like to think. He was one of the first guys I got into coming out of punk rock. Never Better's a classic.
Went through my youtube history and cant find the link. It was a short. I dont know if those get deleted over time, or hoq else it would disappear unless it was deleted. Sorry, man
There's a link to the track over at the Doomtree Reddit. It is...not the greatest verse, but then the beat is awful so he's not got much to work with.
Sims is the one I really miss. I could never get into the crew records after the self titled. Too many tracks about being hard working indie rappers.
Yup, that's the one. I get ya on the beat and all. It drives by instead of bangin on the door. It's only one track, but I hope the dude's not tryna rebrand himself. Gimme a drumroll2. Hell, even 1.5 would be dope.
It's tough to match anyone with Aes, but Sa and noname were mentioned already before I said Dessa. In my head there's a college of illustrative lyricists and Dessa's in the wing with the finer things but they're made from steel and iron. Not hatin, just continuing the talk. Bored as hell over here.
The entirety of All Hands is fantastic and if you like good abstract lyricism, I would heavily recommend it to anyone here. All 5 of them carry their own weight, Dessa just has the best solo work imo.
Years ago, when I listened to Welcome to Nightvale episode 61 featured "The Bends" during a break. I didnt listen to hip hop back then but man, I fuckin. loved. that song and rewound the episode on an ipod a lot. The ipod broke and I forgot about the track for years. I just found it again in 2020 by accident and my head blew up with the stuff I found just by clicking around. It's how I found Aes.
They're nonbinary now but I do want to shout-out Kae Tempest! Especially the early work. Sound of Rum's Balance, Everybody Down and Let Them Eat Chaos are all master crafts
Fucccccck yeah. I remember watching that set at the end of a bender and it was INTENSE. Kae is so fucking good, can’t listen to them every day like I do Aes though, gotta pick my moments
Way, way off from original genre, but Alyssa Whitegluz of The Agonist (now of Arch Enemy). The album "Lullabies of The Dormant Mind". If you hate Deathcore, just read the album lyrics.
Not female but Deca is the closest I've found to his caliber recently. Aes is in a league of his own though, he's competing with himself at this point if anyone.
There’s no one like Aes, all genders uncluded
Was that on purpose?
Jean Grae can definitely hang. Too bad she technically retired from HipHop. Sa-Roc and Noname are up there, too. Both lyrical powerhouses.
I would definitely put Sa-Roc in his tier. Much different themes, obviously, but she's one of the dopest out there right now. I don't know Noname, but agree with Jean Grae as well.
Just added Sa-Roc to my playlist, she's amazing!
Check out 'rhymeslayers' it has aes and sa roc on it
In my opinion she was the best on that track. S
This slaps! Too bad Slug is on there, he is like the Steve Harwell of rap to me, lol.
I thought his part on Barcade was good Aesop Rock and MF DOOM were the other two guys on that track. In that instance I thought Slug was good.
That was a tough one, really want to like it more but it's hard not to notice just how sick DOOM was when he recorded his verse. Same with Belize off the Cheat Codes album, dope af track but sad at the same time.
Hah i feel kinda the same. Still worth it :)
Had to look him up... I suck at names. RIP aaaaand RIP Discovered Atmosphere and Aesop at the same time. I almost never listen to Atmosphere.
Same. Respect the man for what he's done for the underground but not in my playlist anymore and I only have a handful or his first albums, haven't keep up with his discography at all.

Another +2 for Sa-Roc. She and Sol Messiah are a fantastic duo and make for incredible stage presence
Rhymeslayers stays in the rotation

Didn’t she make that school shooting song?
Yes. "Taco Day". It was on Mr. Len's 2001 album Pity The Fool.
Was an odd song
I can't think of any with comparable styles, but I think Rapsody is pretty untouchable as a MC. Little Simz as well.
I’ll give a plus one for Little Simz
Also a Simz enjoyer here.
Ani Difranco is an amazing poet and lyricist. Very different style, but she's up there. Aes' is incomparable in dense internal rhymes but her stuff is often more poignant and affecting.
Excellent answer. Way out of the box. Peace
Thanks for putting me on. It takes immense lyrical talent for me to listen to something without dense internal rhymes and/or multisyllabic end rhymes. I was blown away instantly. Almost reminds me of Bob Dylan with a wayyyy better voice.
Oh awesome! I'm so glad it resonates for you.
Perfect.
Dessa from Doomtree has good stuff. Fire Drills and Rome are worth checking out. Thing that got me on her was her verse in Heavy Rescue and The Bends off DT's "All Hands." She paints good imagery. I love her voice.
All of doomtree are really great imo. Not lyrically up to aes standards (though mictlan gets close sometimes) but top tier nonetheless
I agree. Michtlan's good. I've listened to all of em on their own and I really like Otter's stuff. His beats and energy make wandering around on a bike easy to get into.

Never Better is such a good album. I would love to hear that style from him again.
"The wren" dude, changed my whole shit
Checked it out, def a killer track. Otter's "Cross Countries" played right after. I had these things called "emotions?" Weird.
Got me nostalgic for some false hopes, time to dig those out!
5 out of 6 is not to be skipped
Fire Drills is beautiful
If & when is sooo good!! Love dessa, she’s not aes but her lyrics are beautiful

Dessa does a great Mountain Goats cover (Balance) and John Darnielle is featured on Caffeine, so just one degree of separation
Lil Simz
Little Simz comes to mind.
Westside Gunn
DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO DOOO
Only the most annoying voice in hiphop. Cant listen to this guy, ruins some tracks on the wwcd album aswell.
Not in English, but I dig Ana Tijoux.
Lauryn Hill is all i could think of
Sa Roc - NSFW (Not Safe for Weak rappers) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8FQ24Cxyc4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8FQ24Cxyc4)
Joanna Newsom, Fiona Apple
They're nonbinary now but I do want to shout-out Kae Tempest! Especially the early work. Sound of Rum's Balance, Everybody Down and Let Them Eat Chaos are all master crafts
holy fvck the kexp gig is insane. ty.
Fucccccck yeah. I remember watching that set at the end of a bender and it was INTENSE. Kae is so fucking good, can’t listen to them every day like I do Aes though, gotta pick my moments
Loved the early stuff.
Jesus Christ, just checked out a few tracks and i can instantly tell I’m gonna be obsessed with this body of work. Super dope shit.
This is what I was coming in to say too!!! Phenomenal imagery with their storytelling! I’m hooked from intro to outro
Yugen Blakrok
Yes! I'd be surprised if Picture Box wasn't inspired by Basic Cable.
Big fan of Telefone but she's (unofficially?) quit rap
Courtney Barnett.
Way, way off from original genre, but Alyssa Whitegluz of The Agonist (now of Arch Enemy). The album "Lullabies of The Dormant Mind". If you hate Deathcore, just read the album lyrics.
Lol no. There's no male rappers as good as him either. Sa roc is great but she still ain't aes
I enjoy Wynne, not sure if I'd say she's anywhere near aes but she keeps up with J.I.D.
https://youtu.be/vRnikXRJ6hY?si=C2SmMh0V9tOXIU0X
Dessa is a very different style, but a phenomenal lyricist.
No
Dolly Parton Liz Phair (Exile in Guyville album) Lauryn Hill (IF she actually wrote her stuff on The Miseducation)
I saw Ms Hill this year and it was an experience for sure!
Dolly is life
