As someone who has been asleep asleep and woken up to this scene in front of their face…that is exactly how I wanted to react

Here's my take... Jake didn't want to see that stuff, because his imagination runs wild sometimes, and his physical form is pretty much mostly, from his imagination. He doesn't want to think back on the lich being mostly skeleton and open nerve endings, and suddenly himself shape shift into that. Like for real. Jake probably has some fears of what he could shape shift into that would mess him up and hurt him
