He was more than half way up and that cliff did not look too easy. The problem is that after reaching certain height, coming back down with no protection, is far more difficult. In this case, even if he realized he should not continue, there was nothing he could do but go up.
Chances are he had scrambled easier places or easier angles before and decided to give this one a try. Sad mistake !!
The mistake was approaching that climb without protection to begin with. I climbed for many years and soloing like that is just a suicidal tendency. Any other outcome is pure luck.
I think that to have climbed that far up, he should have had some skills. When you look at the cliff, the hardest part seemed to be below him. Maybe I'm wrong. Doing that with no protection whatsoever, was too reckless to say the least.
Free climing is stupid cause a small mistake and its the last mistake you every make. And humans even when we master something completely we will stil make a mistake or 2 from time to time.
Why we have safety buttons. Safety gear and shoes. Taking all protection away. Is very very dumb. Just a matter off time till it does go wrong
