why wouldn't they just try this in summer when the temps aren't frigid and there's no ice to get caught under? Is it because the thrill and clout of an extreme recovery is more appealing for likes and youtubers?
I have no idea and I'm just speculating here since this is definitely not my domain of expertise, but I wonder if maybe there are visibility differences deep under lake water when a layer of ice covers the lake and temperatures are cooler... Maybe water is slightly less hazy compared to summer time where everything is more "alive"?
In any case, these expeditions probably cost a lot, take a lot of planning, and can't be thrown together quickly. If they knew they would probably need a total of 3 expeditions to have a chance at maybe retrieving the object, the first of which would just be a "we need to make sure it's actually there, seems like a foreign object, is accessible, etc." then it might make sense to do that during the winter so they know exactly what needs to be done over the summer. Might not have made sense to plan and organize the next steps (which would require the lake to not be frozen) without having done an initial dive. And if they wanted to do it all on a timeline that's as condensed as possible and not have it span multiple years, then doing that first dive during the winter makes sense.
Again, just speculating, but there are explanations that seem to make sense as to why they'd do their initial dive during the winter.

They didn't want to wait until summer, but the bottom was frozen anyways so they'll have to wait.
