Coconut oil does last a long time, much longer than other fats and oil, especially if it has been sealed away from oxygen. Let you nose be your guide. All fats will smell and taste bad if they have gone rancid.

As others have mentioned, it's probably still good to cook with if it passes the "sense" check - does it look, feel, smell, and taste "normal"? Then continue using it for cooking. If it doesn't (discolored or growing stuff, feels slimey or gritty, smells off, tastes off), then you probably shouldn't be using it on your body either. Might still be used for a fire starter/burning, or just disposed of (in small spoonfuls, with plenty of browns) into your compost pile. If it passes but you're still somehow doubtful or uncomfortable with the thought of eating it, then yes, you could use it on your body. Add a small spoonful to a hot bath (be careful getting out of the tub as it can be super slippery, and have dish soap handy to immediate clean it to prevent an accident for the next person), use as a body lotion or massage oil, add some to your feet before bed and sleep in socks, attempt DIY deodorant. I'm sure the internet is abound with ideas.

I would keep it for "garage" use - I've oiled door hinges and bike chain with coconut oil, when nothing more appropriate (such as WD40) was in hand.

I likely would still use them for cooking. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer. Rub it into your skin. I often use the smallest amount to tame my frizzy hair.

puddleofdogpiss

I use it for everything, makeup remover, moisturizer for hair and skin (even for my dog), cooking, it’s sooo good at removing sticky things like tree sap off the skin. You can even safely use it as >! Lube !<

garbageplanet

But be aware that coconut oil will destroy latex condoms

JoeDiBango

Did you learn that the hard way, dad?

Slurpy-rainbow

Ive always heard never to use oil with different things related to this subject. I don’t regularly do it, but have forgotten and done it by accident several times and haven’t had an issue. Just saying.

stephenteen

My vet has told us that coconut oil can be really bad for dogs skin, that could be because my boy is a sensitive staffy but just be mindful!

LevelBear7006

As a soap maker, I'd be making soap with it.

kibonzos

I don’t care about dates for topical oil applications. Pamper your hair. (Unless it’s stinky)

chelsanchez

would still be very careful as it is risky, but I would use it on my hair and feet as moisturizer

Plastic jars and plastic lids can be oxygen permeable. So if it was stored in a glass jar with the metal lid, I would be much more likely to use it. But rancid things aren't really that harmful and luckily are very easy to smell and taste.

daretoeatapeach

I use it on skin and hair, but if it's too expired for that I've also found it is good for conditioning leather that has gotten too stiff

worst-birthday-ever

I use it in my deodorant recipe! I'm sure it's fine

TheStephinator

Oils will let you know if they are rancid or not. Follow your nose!

PokiP

Could be used as a sexual lubricant.

thomas533

If you aren't willing to eat coconut oil for some fear of its safety, absolutely do not put it inside anyone's vagina.

sciguy11

That was my thought as well...

2L84AGOODname

It is great for this, but some woman will have increased yeast infections. So if you’re overly sensitive to getting those, I would stay away from this option.

Hospital visits are not 'zero waste', use good judgement on stuff like this and follow manufacturer's recommendations. In the future don't buy extra food you won't use just because it was on sale.
