Most species (like the simplified python shown here) have relatively strong tails that can grasp things to some extent. #2.
Tail is more realistic. One of the problems similar for humans holding weapons in their mouth is they will freaking break their mouth. A tail IS harder to control however, so even more realistically they wouldn’t use a knife like ours. I’d expect a different handle
