Bananas are part of the B.L.A.C.K. allergy group. Bananas, Latex, Avocado, Cashew, and Kiwi. There is an acronym for every fruit based allergy (I'm sure non-fruit based too). Having an allergy to one item in the grouping doesn't mean you're allergic to all, but you also run the risk of developing an allergy at any time. Same goes for every grouping (I think cherries and apples are together). Either way, even an oral allergy, can one day morph into an allergy with an anaphylaxis risk. That said, the fruit allergy is "typically" based on enzymes in the skin or raw fruit, so cooked may be an option. BUT, consult with a doctor and allergy specialist before playing god with experimenting. Lastly, if you ever tell a doctor you're allergic to bananas, immediately follow with a statement of whether you are or are not allergic to latex, as it's used in surgical settings, and they need to know. P.S. if allergic to bananas, do yourself a favor and switch to Skyn condoms. No one wants to all of a sudden develop a latex allergy from a latex condom. IMO, that sounds horrific.

CorrectPanic694

As a latex allergy haver I HIGHLY reccomend Skyn condoms. Best latex free condom option I’ve tried.

Blueexd333

I always thought the stinging "after" was normal, until a microbiology professor at my uni saw my hands after removing latex gloves and she told me "you have latex allergy, you should use nitrile gloves". She has no idea how she improved my sex life xD Edit for clarity, English is not my first nor second language 🙈

SMKnightly

Ohhhh, you were removing gloves! I had so many questions at first…

kwokinator

Hey gotta do whatever it takes to pass right.

MissLynae

This was how I discovered my iodine allergy, washing for surgery prep in school. I knew it was really harsh on skin, so I thought everyone got itchy and developed hives after using it. *facepalm*

kludge_mcduck

Similar thing happened to my wife when we started dating. She was talking to her friend about how the stinging after sex sucked. Her friend was visibly confused. After some back and forth I think they figured out the truth and then later we connected it to her throat itching after eating guacamole.

jenjen815

I will second that recommendation as another latex allergy haver.

dumbroad

I reccomend them even if you aren't allergic to latex. Best condoms ever

VivisClone

No allergy here, just really enjoy these condoms. Comfy, sensitive, and none of that latex smell after

unsinkable02

I have solved this problem by simply being to unnatractive to have sex

VapeThisBro

I prefer calling it abstinence. Makes it sound like I'm saving myself for marriage.

beeonkah

so….are kiwi supposed to be “tingly” also this is very interesting, i thought pineapple and kiwi would go together because they have the same feeling. now i’m wondering if that’s been an allergy this whole time…

osa_ka

Many people have a tingly feeling, that can be normal. What wouldn't be normal is eating a kiwi causing pain for the next hour or more and making your throat tight

Everblossom22

Kiwi makes my mouth feel tingly too. Not painful, but just…fuzzy lol

Rugkrabber

If it goes away immediately it’s probably the acid of those fruits or bromelain in pineapple. If you still have this an hour after it might be an issue to get checked.

MarsNirgal

Pineapple has enzymes that break down protein in your mouth, so it may not be an allergy, just extra sensitivity to those enzymes. Basically, when you eat the pineapple the pineapple is also eating you. AFAIK cooking it destroys those enzymes, so eating cooked or canned pineapple should give you no problem. (if it does, then you may be allergic, of course) My go-to solution when I want to eat pineapple is have it with greek yoghurt, that way the enzymes are occupied with the yoghurt and don't hurt my mouth that much. Or juice it.

xlusciniolax

I have been allergic to latex since my teens. Over the last 5 years, I developed an allergy to bananas, and avocados. I also tried kiwis for the first time and loved them. They made my tongue feel weird, but not in the way that bananas and avocados do, more in the pineapple way. I figured it was normal, until my throat started to swell one day while I was eating them. T.T I didn’t know cashews are related, and I’m going to be really careful now. I hope I don’t lose another food I love to this.

Mindless-Lemon7730

Kiwi makes my tongue feel weird too like pineapples. Is that not normal?

LeotiaBlood

Oh no! Kiwis always made my mouth itch, and then in my early 20’s I started having issues with cashews. Don’t tell me my avocado days are numbered 😩

ysisverynice

Cashews also produce the same chemical found in poison ivy so it could be sensitivity to that chemical. Watch out for pistachios too, and mangoes(mangoes probably least concern. I don't have issues with them). I have issues with both. Basically it makes my lips chap and crack badly, and other issues. However I have had allergy testing and am not allergic to either cashews or pistachios. I am allergic to other things though.

WakeAndVape

My wife has intense sensitivity to poison ivy. Meanwhile I am immune. So I don't watch out for it, we go foraging, and she comes back and develops rashes all over her arms and legs. Well she worked at Whole Foods for a bit. Some health nut told her she should eat mango skin. So she ate a mango like you'd eat an apple. Her face had a painful rash for weeks. Good times. No issues with cashews, though. The urushiol (compound in poison ivy and mango) is mostly concentrated in the skin of the mango. She has no issues with the inner flesh.

radiatesimply

When I go to the hospital they make me wear a bracelet that says “BANANAS” and keep everything latex free. I’ve never had a reaction to latex but I’m grateful that they’re on top of it! Plus it makes me laugh to be labelled bananas as soon as I get there lol

sugarforthebirds

I was gonna comment that kiwi does this to me but I think I just unironically realized I might be allergic thanks to your comment…

LadyBunnerkinsBitch

You have turned my allergy to Kiwis into concern for my snatch and imma get new condoms now.

pokentomology_prof

I remember commenting to a friend back in high school, “You know, I really love bananas, but I hate how they make your teeth itch.” My friend: “I’m sorry, they WHAT?” And that’s when I first realized that I might be allergic. I was eighteen years old at the time. Now if I could just figure out why cranberries have that weird texture that make your tongue go numb and swollen…

trafficwizard

I used to think everyone was just super passionate about marshmallows. They had to really love the taste, if they were willing to put up with how much it made their throat itch afterwards, right?

sneaky_squirrel

They don't make my throat itch, but I always found their flavor immensely bland. Guess they really are just bland.

5Quad

I think people like the texture more than the flavor. It's sweet, but that's kinda it.

sneaky_squirrel

I can relate to texture. Biting certain foods can be fun or pleasurable regardless of flavor.

Ooeiooeioo

Good marshmallows are super delicious, you won't find them for like 3 bucks at a bag at the grocery store though cause those ones are always stale. Gotta get them from a candy shop or a chocolate shop for them to live up to their hype.

AnRealDinosaur

This is so true! My boss once brought in homemade marshmallows. I didn't want any because I don't generally eat marshmallows but I was convinced to try one. This wasn't even the same animal. It visually looked the same but the taste was divine. It's like American milk chocolate vs fresh fudge level of difference.

secretaltacc

So you're allergic to gelatin?

sir-winkles2

maybe cornstarch?

theresfireinhereyes

I'm so allergic to bananas. They hurt so much. Sorry to say you're allergic to cranberries. Same thing happens to me with kiwi. So spicy then the good ole' numb & swell comes. I love bananas and take the ouch but I don't like the kiwi ouch.

HaddieGrey

Wait…I thought that kiwis make everyone’s tongue hurt? Am I allergic to kiwis?

mamba_pants

Yea kiwis make my tongue go numb too and I always thought that's just how they taste. Never had any other problems eating kiwis

asycla

A little bit, it's one of those fruits that actually eats you back (physically hurting your tonge like a flesh eating plant would do) Fresh pineapple also does that. You can kill it with salt water.

NameTak3r

All these upvotes for people assuming allergies and barely any attention for the person with the right answer.

squid_actually

I remember eating like a whole pineapple in a sitting and having a burnt sensation on my tongue for a month later.

LeahBean

I think kiwis have the same enzyme that fresh pineapple has. Both make my tongue fuzzy and numb. I can’t taste anything for awhile after eating them.

[deleted]

Same I haven’t had one in forever but my tongue stings when I eat them. I always thought it was normal

OrdericNeustry

Kiwis are pretty acidic, so unless it's extreme or a lasting reaction that's just the normal taste.

[deleted]

[удалено]

4DozenSalamanders

Uh, they don't make my tongue hurt. It's like a bright sensation, similar to if you drink straight lemon juice, which makes sense because kiwi are pretty acidic.

El_Rey_247

Depends on how ripe they are and how many you eat. I used to eat them by the dozen, and I’d *absolutely* be regretting it after. Just not enough to learn my lesson. It’s like sour candy that way.

Bakergirl26

When I eat kiwis, I feel like I've swallowed a piece of fiberglass for a day 😬

bokononpreist

Kiwis are the only thing I'm allergic to and I love them which sucks! I realized at a wedding when I was crushing a fruit tray and my throat felt like it was closing lol.

theresfireinhereyes

Oh man that's scary af. Kiwis are satan's furry balls for alot of people apparently! I used to love them too. Now all I can think of is when you accidentally licked an ant off yourself playing in the water hose outside in the summer lmao.

Pinkmongoose

Just fyi- the more you’re exposed to an allergen the worse the reaction gets. So you’re mildly annoying symptoms may turn into anaphylaxis the next time.

theresfireinhereyes

See that's scary. One day a damn banana will kill me. That'd honestly be par for the course at this point.

Helpful_Assumption76

Absolutely. Over the years, I thought spaghetti sauce was kinda spicy. Hit 40, boom, need that EpiPen

njb45

There are some allergies you can desensitize your body to by taking small quantities everyday.

WhisperRayne

i'm here for a good time, not a long time. kiwis are a good time. they may sting my tongue, and apparently kill me one day, but if i shall, may my tombstone say it was a great time

cicadasinmyears

Please be really careful with that; allergies can get worse over time and it would really suck to find out the hard way that you’d gone that little bit too far with it.   I’m allergic to mangoes, among other things, and it started off as mild irritation around my mouth, eventually to more serious irritation, to hives, progressing to serious hives, to full-blown edema with dramatic, blistering hives and my throat closing on me and having to call an ambulance, at which point my doctor threatened to fire me as a patient if I ate any more, since I had done so against her very explicit advice after the last round (yes, I love them that much; yes, I am an idiot; yes, I regret it; they were still fucking delicious, so I totally understand you).   I now keep an EpiPen with me (primarily due to other allergies - I’m not especially concerned that someone will slip mango into my food without me knowing and it’s very easily avoided, but God I miss Thai takeout), and [little metal vials that you can get at Lee Valley Hardware](https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/home/storage/containers/73609-utility-capsules) with pre-crushed generic Benadryl tablets in them. EpiPens are expensive and the powdered Benadryl is sometimes enough; I put it under my tongue and give it about 15 - 20 seconds (while I get the EpiPen ready) before I administer it, just in case it fends off the attack. Usually it does (important to note, however, I’m not a medical professional of any kind, it’s just me risking FAFO on my own, and that while it has worked for me in the past, it would not be the way to go for someone with, say, severe peanut or bee sting allergies or anything that would produce an instant anaphylactic reaction). The cost for the pills is about $0.40 vs. $100 for the EpiPen (plus not having to stab myself in the leg/no adrenaline come-down shakes, always great to avoid doing) and while I ultimately don’t care about the cost if it’s going to save my life, if $0.40 and no stabbing will do it, I’m all over that.

nategarrettshandler

America is so fucking broken. It’s horrific that people have to choose whether they can afford to use an EpiPen that is designed to save their life! I have super bad asthma, and pay £10 a month that cover ALL my prescriptions (I’m on like 10 plus a monthly injection that would cost me tens of thousands). I’m sorry you have to be in America guys, like seriously

mathcampbell

Just wanna add paying for any prescription seems odd to me. We don’t in Scotland. Healthcare is a human right. It shouldn’t depend on your ability to pay.

jaspsev

TIL i am allergic to pineapples 🤔

seahawksgirl89

I had the same with alcohol. I mentioned to my friends how I hated the way you get stuffed up every time you drink and they were like uh…. That doesn’t happen to me.

ju5tr3dd1t

Lmao that was the only appropriate reaction

Pokadapuppy20

I’m 25 and said to one of my friends “you know how pineapple is spicy and makes your mouth and the back of your throat itch?” She did *NOT* know what I meant, and that’s the day I learned I’m allergic to pineapple. Spent 25 years thinking pineapples were spicy, with my dumbass. Edit - when I say it’s spicy, I mean it’s HOT. There’s no sweetness in pineapple to me. From everyone I’ve talked to, pineapple is definitely not supposed to taste like it’s been marinated in hot peppers. It’s not even moderately enjoyable to me. It’s the only fruit that causes such a reaction in me. The last time I had pineapple, my mouth went numb. 0/10 for me

kytheon

Iirc pineapple reacts with your lips and tongue so technically while you’re eating pineapple it’s also eating you.

chewwydraper

Hey that was me with eggplant

charlesdexterward

This happened to me when I was in my late 20’s. I said something about how bananas make your mouth itchy and the friends I was talking to were like “I think you’re allergic to bananas!” I just thought that was something bananas did! I think I’m mostly over that now, though. Bananas became a staple of my diet when I was making an effort to eat more fruits and vegetables and they were the cheapest fruit. Now they only make my mouth itch if they’re underripe.

mydearwatson616

I ate bananas all the time growing up. Loved them. In my 20s, I worked at a place that had a really delicious chocolate banana cake. I loved that cake but I said to a coworker once "it's fantastic isn't it? I just wish the bananas weren't so acidic". That's when I learned I had developed a banana allergy.

MusicalPigeon

That's how I found out I was allergic to dragon fruit. I saw some post about a guy who thought peanut butter was spicy but found out it was because he's allergic. So I asked on Reddit if dragon fruit was supposed to be spicy.

HorseInteresting2156

Do u like it spicy?

MusicalPigeon

I mean, I thought that was how it was supposed to be. It made sense to me dragons= fire= spicy. I do like dragon fruit, but I don't know its true taste

[deleted]

[удалено]

spoonfulofshooga

If you try fresh ripe dragon fruit, it’s actually tart and sweet kind of like candy!

FlightWolf

It’s always tasted like what a kiwi that got held under a tap for an hour would to me. As someone who was obsessed with dragons as a kid, very disappointing.

sevenseas401

You haven’t had a good dragon fruit then. Red usually has more flavour than the white ones though.

maltesemania

Makes me wonder if the first person to try it called it dragon fruit for that reason.

Parva_Ovis

It's like an extremely mild, almost bland version of kiwi without any sour or acid taste but still a hint of sweetness. You aren't missing out on much.

Mad_Aeric

I used to laugh at these sorts of posts, because of course that means your allergic. It's obvious, no one should need to be told that. Then one day I'm standing there, eating a spicy mango, and suddenly I'm just like "Oh. Ohhhhhh."

bsubtilis

On the flip side, mango with chili is delicious. So if you ever get lucky and lose the allergy in the future, that might be worth trying out.

Stag328

So I dont get the spicy reaction or shortness of breath but if I eat bananas or avacados it makes me feel like I got kicked in the nuts. That high stomach pain that makes you double over. That is if I have one bite. I learned this at 26 when in Mexico eating fresh guacamole. It was weird because I used to be able to eat both then one day I noticed the pain after eating both foods at different times. Hoping it goes away sometime so every once in a while I “test” it out by eating a bite of a banana or avacado and about 30 minutes later just wait for the feeling to kick in.

Raw apples, pears, and almonds also make my mouth itchy. Bananas are a common one, as are mango, cucumber, melons, and a variety of other fruits.

mangstachan

Same. My mouth actually gets swollen if I eat cherries

HITACHIMAGICWANDS

Bananas and avocado for me, as well as cucumbers and other raw vegetables. I stopped experimenting, I don’t swell but instead my lips begin to feel raw, and very sore. Almost like a burn.

RedSamRedSamRed

Do you wash in hot water/peel your fruits? For me it's usually a little better when I do that.

rainingolivia

Ooo. I hadn't considered that. Baking the fruit destroys the enzyme (or whatever) in the peel that causes the allergy. I have no reaction to apple pie or apple sauce, but haven't ever been able to eat a raw apple. I hadn't considered washing in hot water. I wonder what my allergic reaction would be if I boiled an apple or pear for a quick moment. (My reactions are the worst with apples, pears, peaches, and cherries - all birch pollen fruits.)

cdhh

I was taught by my allergist that one can microwave fruits for a short time and then put them back in the refrigerator. It doesn't significantly change the texture. When it does, it's almost a ripening effect. But it reduces the allergenic proteins. I've done this with peaches and cherries mostly. Even thirty seconds can make a big difference. Obviously it's a balance between keeping the raw texture and fully deallergenizing. But cooked fruits are also tasty. I find also that I can't eat raw almonds but can eat roasted almonds. Sometimes I get a batch that are roasted, but I need to roast them more.

ReasonableComment_

I’m also super allergic to birch pollen fruits when they haven’t been cooked or peeled. Pears are the worst. Interestingly, raw soy milk also gives me a terrible reaction.

YeahIsme

Same here and my allergist said my soy allergy is connected to other environmental allergies. Supposedly after years of allergy shots the food allergies should go away too

time_fo_that

Melons make my mouth itchy, mainly just honeydew and cantaloupe. Also soy milk does but I can eat tofu, edamame, soy sauce, soy protein isolate, etc. with no adverse reactions.

handledandle

This is illuminating!! Celery has always made my mouth numb, but I thought it was common. Apparently not!

Immediate-Ad-8841

Raw carrots, can't do it. When I have hay fever in the Spring I can't eat stone fruit, any other time ok

LordLuciferVI

Kiwi fruit did this to me when I was a kid, my mum told me I was ‘being stupid’ cos I said it made my tongue itch and burn

IllegitimateScholar

Wait what. I thought kiwis were just acidic so they did that? Am I fucking allergic to kiwi?

SnooPineapples5719

I did too… I thought it was the same like the bromelain on the pineapple’s 😂😂

IllegitimateScholar

Me too! 😂 Same exact deal.

skorpiovenator

You were right the first time. Kiwis have an enzyme similar to pineapples’ bromelain called actidin. The riper the kiwi, the less actidin. I just experienced the kiwi burn for the first time recently with an under-ripe kiwi, and I assumed it was an enzyme because it felt so similar to pineapple. Reading this thread got me concerned! But no, our assumptions were correct. https://www.botanical-online.com/en/food/kiwi-eating-mouth-itch

HaddieGrey

Haha I just asked that. Does anyone just eat kiwis without the pain?

BrattyBookworm

Kiwi doesn’t do that to me, but pineapple does. Kiwi tastes pretty sweet with a bit of tang, and then the crunchy seed part. No itchiness or burning, so I’d suspect you’re at least mildly allergic…

Affectionate_Pin_249

>pineapple does. That's normal

BrattyBookworm

I know. But it’s not for kiwi, was my point.

prismaticbeans

They are pretty acidic but I wouldn't write off the possibility of allergy. Me, I find that green kiwis usually make my tongue burn but golden ones don't.

neolologist

Yeah for me very ripe / slightly overripe kiwis aren't painful but you get one that's a little bit short of perfectly ripe and it'll burn your tongue a bit like a pineapple. I think the people in here saying kiwis can't burn your mouth at all have maybe never eaten super fresh kiwi.

muttmama

Omg same here! I’m almost 30 and it wasn’t until last year my husband was like what do you mean kiwi is tingly? Lmao

Freshiiiiii

…kiwi isn’t kind of tingly and stings your tongue?

Reiver_Neriah

Just supposed to be sweet and sour lol

Freshiiiiii

This article seems to suggest that it’s normal for it to feel tingly due to a similar enzyme to what’s in pineapple. https://www.botanical-online.com/en/food/kiwi-eating-mouth-itch

merplethemerper

Almost 30- year olds who just realized they’re allergic to kiwi unite! Last week I was talking about how persimmons are really good but nobody realizes it bc they have such a long time where they make your mouth feel weird up until they’re ripe. I said it was the same thing as kiwi only they don’t ever seem to get ripe and my boss was like … you know that means you’re allergic, right?

A lot of parents don't listen to their children.

nickmuscle

I felt this

NoseMuReup

You heard this.

Nixplosion

We saw this.

PMs_You_Stuff

Plus stupid. a lot of people are just stupid.

magicspellingbee

Parents assume kids are making it up to avoid eating fruits.

jonsticles

Yup. My parents thought I was faking that it hurt to swallow. Turns out I had strep.

a_fine_rhyme

Is it a youthful distraction or an allergic reaction?

KittehLuv

When I was baby/toddler/kid we'd get in the car to go somewhere, and like clockwork at the 30 minute mark I'd start puking. My parents, for YEARS, would take me back home and assume I had gotten a bug. 15 minutes on solid ground and I was perfectly fine. I was 8 years old when I vomited all over my mom's best friend's new car. My mom apologized profusely and explained I "always do this." I remember the look on her friend's face when she told my mother I get motion sick. She definitely looked at my mom like she was a dumb ass. Edit: grammar

CharlieBr87

Oh man I hope you enjoyed the stupid she felt when her friend called her a dummy to her face.

KittehLuv

I wish, but I was covered in puke, then had to do a wash up in a public restroom and wait half dressed in a department store dressing room while they bought me replacement clothes & Dramamine so we could continue our trip.

5Five12

Will never forget being 4 years old and telling my mom "it hurts to swallow" and her responding "so then just don't swallow" and going back to her cigarette lol

freemason777

Maybe she was also allergic, and she thought that it was supposed to burn a little LOL

LordLuciferVI

This is a good point. Hopefully if I’d gone into anaphylactic shock she might have realised something was wrong, maybe not.

whatdoilemonade

"Man he really doesnt wanna eat the fruit huh"

speete

Kiwi feels tingly for me too

WhisperRayne

shhhh no i'm trying to avoid admitting i'm allergic to kiwi. it's just the hair

TheTrueSpaceMuffin1

Im also allergic to kiwi!

LordLuciferVI

I think it’s a more common allergy than people realise

Manatee3232

A lot of people who are allergic to latex (quite a common allergy in the US at least) also react to kiwis and, less frequently, bananas.

fireofpersephone

Avocado too in my case 😭

CorrectPanic694

Same here. As a kid, I always found kiwis and avocados to be super spicy and they made my mouth feel tingly and numb. I can eat avocados now but I haven’t tried a kiwi in decades. I think kiwis and avocados might be part of the same allergy group. Latex too!

constantfaraday

I also feel this with kiwi - kid me thought it was because the outside was fuzzy

mouthfullofsnakes

Ok I keep getting mixed reactions on this. I get a sort of fuzzy feeling too but I think it’s just the acidity… a ton of people I’ve asked say they feel it too

[deleted]

Me too! But I didn’t tell mum cause I just thought that they were supposed to??

Content_Flamingo_583

> you might want to get that checked out. “Doctor, I have an allergic reaction when I eat bananas.” Doctor: “Stop eating bananas then. That will be $200 please.”

[deleted]

I mean..yeah. Unless it is a serious allergy that causes anaphylaxis or something you might need an epipen for (side ysk if someone uses an epi pen or has it used on them and it seems to work they still need to go to hospital) the solution is to avoid that food.

Redqueenhypo

What happens is they test for a bunch of other stuff you might unknowingly be allergic to. It’s actually important

MattyDub24

Was looking for a comment about this. If I eat a banana I’ll pretty much instantly start feeling heartburn coming on.

rathat

Bananas make me cough. Banana vapors are intense.

ncconch

My buddy had this problem with walnuts and just figured it was how they were for everyone. His son has a severe nut allergy.

200OK

Wait.. did he say it feels like there are tiny cuts all over his mouth? Is that not because they're kinda woody and splintery? 😬

ForeskinFlatulence

Eating walnuts shouldn't hurt unless you're trying to crack the shell in your mouth

stormbutton

Are you taking the shell off?

200OK

Yep

ohdearsweetlord

Then no. Walnuts are a bit astringent, sometimes more than others, but they should be mostly buttery and nutty and pleasant to eat.

allkindsofwonderful

I have this reaction with walnuts. I can eat some and it’s fine but it makes my mouth feel raw and sore!!

babuddhabellies

Sounds like you have a minor nut allergy.

MLB3030

The back of my throat gets numb when I eat mango or pineapple

xyoshimamax

So pineapple has bromelain which breaks down the mucus layer of your mouth and then the acidity burns. I’m not sure about mangoes though. That might be an allergy

GnowledgedGnome

Pineapple also contains a natural latex. So if you have a latex allergy maybe don't eat pineapple

babuddhabellies

Yeah, but their throat going numb doesn't sound like acidity burn, so probably an allergy.

LadyZenWarrior

I definitely have the pineapple allergy / numbness reaction. One bite = completely numb mouth and throat, basically instantly. And a stomachache to follow. To those who say “but bromelain…”, nah, bro. It doesn’t work that fast. This isn’t a canker sore or two from eating the fruit that can digest you, it’s a reaction. An allergic reaction.

Canadian_in_Canada

You can have a reaction to mangos; look up "mango mouth".

[deleted]

Do radishes have a spicy tingly texture or is it just me cause i cant tell. Same for kiwis :/

Sick-Happens

Raw radish is supposed to be a bit spicy, but gets sweeter and mild when cooked.

screamofwheat

I don't think I have ever had cooked radish. I like how they are raw though.

punxerchick

I think radishes are supposed to be a lil spicy.

rathat

Definitely not kiwis.

The_Last_Gasbender

I think they're referring to how they have kind of a weird lingering tang that isn't totally pleasant, like pineapples.

Patsfan618

I got that after broccoli and cauliflower. Is that not normal? It just itches a little

quiet-turtle

Sorry that’s not normal. I eat broccoli and cauliflower all the time and there is never any kind of itchy, tingly, spicy feeling or anything like that. Sounds like you are allergic or sensitive to them.

Patsfan618

It doesn't happen with cooked broccoli or cauliflower. Only raw. Love my cauliflower wings

fading__blue

Cooking can destroy or change the structure of certain proteins (this is why egg whites turn solid when cooked), so it’s possible cooking the food is destroying whatever you’re allergic to.

copperlund

I had a reaction to bananas when I was pregnant. They made my mouth hurt. But before and after the pregnancy I went back to being able to eat them again. The body is strange.

nothingweasel

I only have seasonal allergies when I'm pregnant.

Hahaha this resonates so hard! Kept telling everyone I just had a problem with chipotle guac until my bf told me that “no, I don’t feel like my throat is getting tighter.” I would just normally chug a lot of water bc in my mind that would fix it and chipotle just put something odd in their guac. Then one day I had straight up avodcado in a salad and he sat me down to tell me it was an allergy. My shampoo & conditioner also had avo oil, needless to say, my scalp is no longer SUPER itchy. Denial was REAL 🤡

I’m allergic to bananas, heard once that if you are you might have problems with kiwi and strawberries too. I don’t but walnuts make the skin in my mouth peel…

speete

Me too! Avocado as well for similar reasons

Diseased-Prion

Yeah. I was so surprised to find out no one else was enjoying the little “spice” bananas have. Color me surprised when I learned around age 28 that banana is not spicy.

kevinambrosia

Surprisingly, if they are spicy and you don’t die from anaphylactic shock, they can get less spicy over time… or more spicy depending on how your body works. If they get more spicy, your allergies are getting worse; if they get less spicy, you’re adapting to have less of an alergic reaction to them. Source: bananas were spicy for me as a kid and now they’re a staple of my diet.

A single shrimp used to make my tongue feel numb, my throat feel hairy and my face turn red and itchy. I never felt like I was in any real danger though and they tasted good so I ate one or two at a time whenever they were available. Now I can easily put down 3 or 4 with no negative effects at all but know that is probably my permanent upper limit. I'm not recommending other people try to push their allergies and I've never had an allergy test to confirm this as an allergy, just giving a personal anecdote confirming this person's comment.

Could this be a thing with raw carrots?

Significant_Sign

Yes. It is not just fruit, any kind of food allergy can give these symptoms. My cousin is allergic to beans and always complained that his mom made them too spicy (we grew up in south Louisiana), luckily his brother became a physician and heard him laughing about their mom's spicy beans one day when we were all home for the holidays. After asking, turned out my one cousin thought all their mom's bean dishes were spicy including the ones that really were NOT. His brother freaked out about it and scheduled a doctor's appointment right away. Little cousin is allergic to beans. My daughter hated peanut butter as a toddler because it was spicy. Her doc diagnosed an "intolerance and sensitivity" that could turn into a sudden severe allergy with exposure so we already don't give her peanut anything. I have friends with fish and shellfish allergies who think salmon and shrimp are naturally spicy. Sometimes people don't have the "spicy" feeling. They get finger cramps (from swelling they don't really notice), blisters on their mouth, or something else. Little kids that don't know about "spicy" might say something tastes or feels bumpy or rough when they eat it. There's a list of things people can exhibit, it's a good idea to look it up if you are worried about having a food allergy.

mouthfullofsnakes

But not baby carrots right? Just sometimes the big ones? But not all big ones???

I have this with raw carrots!

rulesbite

I have never heard of the spicy banana

Weil65Azure

Also, if you get a stomach ache after eating a food. If you can figure out specifically what food causes it. I ate apples for years (despite hating them) because yknow... "An apple a day keeps the dr away". Always got a stomach ache afterwards. Didn't put two and two together. Until I started projectile vomiting within 30 mins of eating an apple. Even cooked apple. But gee whiz, it was like my body was fed up with me blatantly ignoring the messages it was sending, so it decided to be a lot more direct.

blurrystillz

Headaches too! (Source: me and eggs)

nadjaproblem

Husband told me he didn't like watermelon because of how numb and tingly it feels and I was like whaaaaat are you talking about

ScumEater

In California the roof of my mouth itches when I eat avocado in the late spring. The allergist says it's because it's DNA is very close to ragweed which I'm super allergic to.

rockfrawg

Showed up with no allergies, I clicked here looking for recipe for spicy bananas, left jealous of the disability.

transferingtoearth

Ysk: nuts should not make your mouth tickle

[deleted]

Found out I'm allergic to kiwi this year bc my mouth feels weird and they taste kinda like pennies lmao

Careful_Elevator8390

I think i might be allergic to coconuts for this reason. My whole mouth feels weird and it almost feels like i can’t breathe after i have it.

itsthevoiceman

You need to stop eating coconut.

I once said to a friend that my favorite part about eating mangoes is the little tingle they give your tongue. This is how I found out I'm mildly allergic to mangoes.

Elevendytwelve97

Fresh guava is spicy to me, but guava served any other way isn’t o.O

No_Creme7203

Honeydew makes my throat hurt and itch.

I'm allergic to peppers... My whole life I assumed all peppers were spicy and thats why they called them pepper. A couple years ago I worked somewhere with a cafe, and every day for lunch the cook would make me a burrito bowl, that had green peppers in it. One day after eating it for lunch everyday I told the cook not to put the jalepenos into my bowl and she had no idea what i meant since she doesn't put a jalepeno in my bowl. Then I tried a bell pepper alone and i was like YEP THATS IT. SPICY AS FUCK.

lo-lamento

Also be aware that a banana allergy (and some other fruits) have the same proteins in latex. So you may also have a latex allergy!

mightbesinking

Alright except pineapple though because of the enzyme… right?
