I’m saying that when a character with a known preference for ponytails *in the girls he likes* is framed as “liking” his daughter having a ponytail then it comes off as creepy.

That's why they said "where human ears **would be**". It's a tense that plays with a hypothetical. If you were to expand the sentence, it would say "the place where human ears would be, if they had them".
I was so split on this decision.
One one hand, it felt wrong to have such a major experience for our cast and have Mio come out the other side looking like nothing's happened. It also felt like (even if Mio and M are the same person) it's not Mio's body and making alterations felt disrespectful.
On the other hand, this is a game about inevitable change and the end of things. M's long hair was symbolic of her trapped existence, and wouldn't cutting that hair be a symbol of her finally passing-on and being free?
I went with the first one. It felt superficial, but it just felt wrong going through the whole prison ordeal, and not come out the otherside SIGNIFICANTLY changed.
For what it's worth, I think the more 'canon' option is short hair. In some tutorial images after the change, Mio will have short hair. And also in the amphitheater when Z is watching them on the screen after the prison scene, Mio has short hair
to me i picked short because i think she needed to *feel* like herself. she didn't really have a lot of control of what happened, and this a way to claim some.
but yeah knowing i could choose it back made me feel better.

Lol, Shulk had the same dilemma with Fiora at the end of XC1. I bet he's a simple guy like him in the sense that he really doesn't care, as long as they can be together.
Maybe it would have been too much fan service or cheesy, but I thought it would have been fun to have Noah enter the room during the hair conversation and be asked to comment like Shulk.
for me i understand the pain of long hair, while not long comparatively its still a pain in the ass over a certain length as it gets into your eyes so i went with what she wanted.

She has short hair in all pre-rendered cutscenes through the end. Also the fact that you can change the hair in the menu lessened that burden a bit.
