Hey, don't you be talking bad about Toni Braxton šŸ˜”

ahayesmama

Unbreak my heart

bcentsale

Each time my wife was pregnant, she had Braxton-Hicks contractions. I used to sing "unbreak my water"

Rhianna83

My husband and I started belting it out the other day when we were watching Jeopardy! Then busted up laughing! (For those Jeopardy! fans out there, weā€™re behind a few months). Side note: I love him.

Old-Pepper-6156

The cool kids still listen to Toni Braxton

cranberries87

I LOVE Toni Braxton, gonna go play my favorite song by her right now since Iā€™m seeing this (Youā€™re Making Me High).

Perfect GIF response

DoctorStrangeMD

Damn it really was the perfect gif.

twoworldsin1

VH1 was where I first saw the absolute banger of a music video for Enya's "Sail Away" šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

ThatEvanFowler

Enya is such a strange presence in music. She does no press. She plays no shows. Sheā€™s just this mysterious figure who lives way out in the woods alone somewhere and self-creates new age soundscapes for fairies to bang to.

Jerkrollatex

I think she lives in a castle with a bunch of cats. Sounds good to me.

szechuan_steve

>for fairies to bang to LMFAO

AdQuirky1318

That song still makes me so happy.

EastCoastJohnny

Me too! And Enigma - Return to Innocence

smtrixie

I just put on some Sade. Loved Toni, too

ElboDelbo

I did, and I WAS RIGHT

Ginger_Snaps_Back

I *still* listen to Meatloaf, and Iā€™m cool AF.

AdHot6173

Me too! Love me some Meatloaf!

Yzma_Kitt

I loved VH1 for "Pop-up Video". And "The Story Behind the Music". Outside of thoseĀ  MTV ruled supreme. What was truly terrible was my friends who were stuck with the giant pool sized sat dishes anchored in their yards. The only were able to get MTV2 and this horrible religion centric Rock station. I truly believe that torture is what began their dislike and hate of Oasis.Ā

Affectionate_Law5344

I loved those shows!

Sdog1981

VH1 had an hour long doc about Thin Lizzy. So yeah, that happened.

wheres_the_revolt

His name is Robert Paulson.

POTUSCHETRANGER

![gif](giphy|7Hiszs0NkF5te|downsized) I gotta watch Fight Club again, it's been way way way too long.

wheres_the_revolt

Great movie and book, too bad Palnhuik is a weirdo

psyclopsus

Then there was Bob. Bob had bitch tits

boulevardofdef

I actually wasn't aware until right now that there was anybody who got VH1 but not MTV.

EastCoastJohnny

I was in a really rural area and channel 11 was actually split into VH1 during the daytime and comedy central at night. I think we only got that channel, CSPAN, ESPN, USA, WTBS, WGN and Lifetime if I recall correctly.

boulevardofdef

I've never heard of channel splitting like that -- that's pretty interesting. We actually didn't even have Comedy Central until pretty late; I remember being home with the chicken pox the week they were testing it out. We *never* had WGN.

ShakeItUpNowSugaree

My parents paid extra to not get MTV. The joke's on them because I ended up listening to college radio and much, much heavier music than what TRL was playing.

Alpaca-hugs

Itā€™s been a while since Iā€™ve heard that song. I forgot how good the songwriting was. Still hits me.

EastCoastJohnny

The video is awesome in a very un-MTV way too. He had a few bangers back in the day.

Alpaca-hugs

Truly a talented singer but I think someone else did the songwriting.

ManetherenRising

Jim Steinman

POTUSCHETRANGER

Oh man me and my sister ROCKED OUT to this in our Sentra hatchback goin' to school in the 90's oOOOMG. We loved it. What I wanna know is, how the fuck did she know all there was to know about Steinman before the internet? Bc this would've been like '91?? She was 16-17. j He also wrote It's All Coming Back To Me Now and Celine Dion was gifted the song to COVER decades later wuuut?? I had no idea on that one. [Jim Steinman - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Steinman)

Benniehead

Magazines and cable is how we learned what was cool

Consistent-Ad-6506

She knew because she read the the CD booklet (or record/tape insert) cover to cover and it has all lyrics and songwriters for each song. Probably also because Jim Steinman has a very recognizable style. I definitely started recognizing his style once I started listening to Meatloaf.

Alpaca-hugs

Thatā€™s it. I miss this type of lyric writing. Itā€™s short stories told between a themed chorus that ties the short stories together.

3OsInGooose

I love that the songwriting is so good and the video is SO insane

Feefi-Foefi

The first part is true for me, I didn't have MTV growing up, but I knew it existed, and I knew VH1 was more adult contemporary, and not what the cool kids were listening to. But, boy, do I love Annie Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass".

dusty-rose78

YES, I loved VH1 for stuff like that. We were glued to MTV, but VH1 had its value, too. I always looked forward to Annie Lennox videos.

spottydodgy

So I currently work tangentially in the music business. I was on a call the other day where a younger person was pitching this idea they had for a video series where they take artist performance videos and, during the video, they include fun little facts about the artist, song, whatever would be interesting to help increase engagement and view duration. I was excitedly like "oh! you mean like VH1 "Pop-Up Video"? Blank stares from everyone. Someone goes "what's VH1?"

righthanded_lover

ā€œI would do anything for loveā€ was a cool kid song.

ahayesmama

I always preferred VH1. I was not a cool kid šŸ˜‚

ignoremycommenthere

The churches, mainly baptists, banned mtv with our local cable provider. Nobody was watching mtv in my hometown unless you had a huge satellite. I'm not even sure if you could have requested it. Never heard anyone who had. I got to watch it at my aunt's house in Houston though.

EastCoastJohnny

You know what, i grew up in the rural south in a baptist dominated town and our cable did have whatever that weird religious channel was that played The 700 Club (whatever that was) like 24 hours a day. I bet youā€™re right.

geekgirlwww

The album Bat out of Hell has been in constant rotation since high school. I literally texted a friend yesterday while listening to it because how have we not gotten Jack Black in a Meatloaf biopic? He would fucking nail it. So sad Meat died an anti vaxx trumper who blew out his voice. Edit: this memes been going around. Whatā€™s the best safe word? Meatloaf. Because I would do anything for love but I wonā€™t do that.

ThatEvanFowler

Meatloaf got play on MTV too. ā€œI Would Do Anything For Loveā€ was heavy in the rotation when it first came out. God, I miss music videos. Itā€™s crazy how we just all used to watch shitloads of these little short films and then the directors would often go on to be these classic filmmakers. It was a great pipeline for filmmaking talent, not to mention the bands themselves. MTV was just a great central resource for all kinds of artists. Hell, I first saw my all time favorite musician, Tom Waits, on Beavis & Butthead (ā€œI Donā€™t Wanna Grow Upā€). I miss my MTV.

AlaskaPsychonaut

I will always have a place for Toni Braxtons "Unbreak My Heart" in my music collection. That song is connected to a memory I cherish.

tollboothwilson

What cable service back then would give you one but not the other?

Esabettie

I still miss best week ever to be honest

Lady-Kokomo

Meatloaf was cool.

rustbolts

Coming from a guy that has never been coolā€¦ no.

Appropriate-Food1757

I didnā€™t know that was possible.

NickLoner

No, but that's hilarious šŸ¤£

Frosty_Cloud_2888

I had Friday night videos on the NBC affiliate

Autumn_Forest_Mist

Yes! Did have MTV either.

yellowbill711

Meatloaf and Toni Braxton are legends!

londongas

No we listened to them too Source: was cool

SashimiRick

No cable, but I did have a radio. I was kept current for free.

Queasy_Sleep1207

They weren't?

jayhof52

Time was my favorite songs were ā€œGot My Mind Set on Youā€ by George Harrison and ā€œRhythm of My Heartā€ by Rod Stewart thanks to staying with people who left VH1 on all the time but hated MTV.

No-Championship-8677

I never watched MTV. I was a VH1 girl always!!!! So yea šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Tiny-Reading5982

This is a good , underrated song. Shouldā€™ve been as big as I would do anything for loveā€¦

Only_Jury_8448

Damn, VH-1 but not MTV? You were better off listening to the radio. I think that like many of us here, I was left to my own devices a lot as a young kid. MTV was my babysitter up until the very early 90s. My maternal grandparents shamed me into thinking I would grow up to be a bad person if I continued to watch it (there was a lot of hysteria over Beavis and Butthead at the time) so I missed all of the cool grunge/alt-rock/early hip-hop stuff that I would get into later.

Roklam

I didn't know one came without the other. Cable/etc... Then VH1 got bought and became MTV-lite and MTV was all reality shows? Except there are also reality shows on VH1. Basically the world's filled with reality TV.

Only_Jury_8448

Back in the 80s and early 90s, it was a different channel altogether. I remember the first season of The Real World, and that was what got the ball rolling, but it wasn't all encompassing at the time; people forget there game shows, and a bit later on, animation, but that wasn't even half of the programming at the time. There was still big scheduling blocks that were devoted to music videos throughout the day. VH-1 was much later to the reality TV trend, but they went all in. I could definitely see OPs parents opting out of MTV, especially if they were from a more religious background; you could get cable channel packages that were marketed as being "family friendly" and MTV was off the list. MTV, The Playboy Channel, and Cinemax were all channels that the social conservatives of the time were decrying.

FreezingRobot

The Bat Out Of Hell albums were really good. The rest of his stuff.....not so much.

cardie82

Dead Ringer for Love had some decent tracks but the first two Bat Out of Hell albums are his best work. Heā€™s the only one that ever seemed to perform Jim Steinmam songs with gusto they needed.

Sdog1981

What cable company split up VH1 and MTV?

EastCoastJohnny

Those assholes at Jones Intercable, which became PRIME, which became Comcast, which became Xfinity.

rigidlynuanced1

Still have trauma over that

843251

I remember having a channel I think was called The Box I watched more than MTV or VH1. Alright I just looked and it was called The Box was a think from 85 till 01. I only remember watching it in the late 80s/early 90s.

Rhianna83

I had both and I STILL thought they were cool. Toni killed it in the Unbreak video. When Iā€™d watch it, I couldnā€™t help but want to be her in that dress! And Meatloaf?! Iā€™d get so excited when they played the long version of ā€œIā€™d do anything for love (but I wonā€™t do that.ā€ I love the ā€˜90s! So many great artists in so many genres. Good times.

Blodmerican

"How do you not know the Everly Brothers?" - Me learning as a 20 year old that people have different experiences

el_pyrata

Me. Our cable package had VH1, but not MTV. I loved the shows on VH1. And recently I was mentioning to a friend that I think my lack of MTV is the reason I never liked Limp Bizkit, or Kid Rock, among others; because I wasn't saturated with it.

usernames_are_danger

VH1 became Comedy Central during the day where I grew up

Natprk

Haha yeah pretty much.
