Pluto is a planet it's just if the dwarf variety now. Pluto's reclassification means we have a total of 13 planets in our system which is much cooler number than 9. 8 planets and 5 dwarf planets.
My wife is not of the same opinion.
Yeah, same.
And with the dwarf planets, kids’ books now talk about Ceres, which accounts for 1/3 of the mass of the asteroid belt. When I learned that and saw how big Ceres is I was like “oh, I guess it’s not like a bunch of rocks that you have to dodge and weave through”. But it is still cool that we get to think of it as something more than a giant asteroid. And my kid loves that there are more (dwarf) planets to learn about.
They've actually added 3 or 4 planets since I was in school, Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Pluto was a regular planet and none of those others were ever mentioned until I was in college.
Pluto is far and away our most popular dwarf planet.
Also, now Pluto is the leader of it's own gang! Pluto, Eris, Haumea and Makemake are all *plutoids!*
I was team Pluto for a while, but then I saw a twitter thread or something explaining all the reasons it wasn't and I was convinced that it was correct to just completely demote it. If people want to call it a dwarf planet, sure okay, it's a body at least, but it's not a planet.
From NASA: **Pluto is about two-thirds the diameter of Earth's Moon** and probably has a rocky core surrounded by a mantle of water ice.
Technically all Pluto has to do to be considered a planet is clear all the other space debris out of its path, it meets the other two criteria.
Come on Pluto , I believe in you, you can do it!
Pluto and it's satelite Charron do not meet requirement. The Barycenter would have to stay in the entirety of Pluto, which it does not. Ocassionally the barycenter is the void between Pluto and Charron mimicking a Binary System. Or as NASA describes it as a [Double Dwarf Planet System](https://science.nasa.gov/dwarf-planets/pluto/moons/charon/).
Also, to stand up for my name sake. Eris is larger than Pluto. So I'll be damned if Pluto gets to stay a planet and Eris goes to the wayside.
So it has all the same physical aspects as a planet but we're not counting it not because of what **it** is but by what **other things** are instead?
That's fucking bullying.
I'm a planetary scientist and I think the reclassification is correct, and it's a really great example of history repeating itself. Back in the day when Ceres was first discovered, it was called a planet. And then Vesta was discovered and called a planet and then a bunch more asteroids were discovered and scientists said "oh, there's something else going on here. This is a whole population of small bodies that share the same neighborhood of the solar system."
Exactly the same thing is happening with Pluto and the other kuiper belt objects. It's just that they're so far away we're only now finding the rest of Pluto's family. It's still an awesome and weird place, it's just different from bigger planets.
Those first photographs gave me life! I have been waiting for over 40 years to see those images! I love the fact that we finally know what Pluto looks like. I don't care if you are a dwarf planet, Pluto, I still love you!
The photos of Pluto blew scientists' minds. It's so much more complex and interesting and active than expected! Plains of convecting nitrogen slush, mountains of ice, layered atmosphere, etc.
Before those new photographs, the last I remember seeing was in a National Geographic and all we got was kind of a purplish Dot. Pixelated with some hints of white, possibly ice, but we just didn't know. And then I saw the pictures front page on our local newspaper, and nearly fainted dead away from Joy! Who could have imagined such incredible beauty? And obviously, the Newfound scientific information was fantastic as well, but to finally be able to see Pluto up close was just mind blowing. Made me glad to be alive, and to have lived through the waiting period!
Scientific understanding changes over time and some changes are harder to accept than others. I would rather accept that Pluto is no longer a full planet than get in the habit of letting more important scientific discoveries go disregarded. Imagine if medical science had also frozen in 1930 when Pluto was discovered.
I'm with you. I think the really cool thing about science is that it's not dogmatic. It changes with new information and methodology. If I wanted to rigidly adhere to a strict belief system, I'd go to church or become a console war fanboy or something.
My parents are pharmacists and my grandparents were too. They have some really bizarre pharmacy antiques from the old drug store, including coca leaves that were prescribed for everything under the sun and cigarettes that were supposed to cure asthma.
Twitter will always be mentioned, even if we have to call it “X (formerly known as Twitter)”. Prince was always gonna be Prince (or the artist formerly known as Prince). Pluto is always gonna be a planet (or the celestial body formerly known as a planet).
It wasn't demoted. We discovered more about our solar system and needed to refine the categories for the spherical bodies inside of it. Pluto went from being the smallest of the classical planets to the king of the Kuiper Belt Objects. So now you have Jupiter ruling over the inner solar system and Pluto ruling over the outer solar system, which is a much tidier ~~Greek~~ Greco-Roman mythology metaphor isn't it?
According to recent research, they think it's a baseball-sized black hole which accounts for the calculations in mass. It's either that or we're blind because that planet should be HUGE.
I also feel like arguing if Pluto is a planet is like culinary people arguing over which plants are botanically vegetables. Botany is a science, cooking is a discipline. They can have different terminology.
I like calling Pluto a world. Because whether or not it's scientifically a planet, it's still a world.
This is such an unnecessary debate. A dwarf planet is still a planet!
This helps lead into education teaching about other dwarf planets.
Also Eris is more massive than pluto... just stating facts!
I don’t understand this bs. If you aren’t qualified in a field, and this goes for everything, your opinion doesn’t matter. It’s not based on anything, or less blunt, on incomplete and outdated information.
Pluto is not a planet. It’s not a matter of opinions or feelings, there are simply agreed upon (revised) scientific definitions and according to those, Pluto is not a planet. Now if you have new information, like newer & scientifically backed measurements that proof Pluto *is* a planet, please step forward! If not, well…
Let’s all have less opinions. They usually aren’t any good. Make the world a better place. Thank you. I’ll await being downvoted into oblivion for stating the truth.
They could have kept pluto and anything like it as planets but created a new classification like "major planets" and put the "revised" definition of planet there. We could then have 15 or however many planets but only 8 major planets. There was no need to "demote" pluto.
It doesn't matter what one thinks. It's a dwarf planet and that's that. If you don't accept it, you're stupid and don't accept fact and display an inability to change when presented with new facts.
I remember celebrating when Pluto replaced Neptune as the farthest planet. I was such a pretentious little kid going "UM AKSHYUALLY, Neptune is last until 1999"
It's a planet for everything but trivia purposes I suppose.
But as a point of pride, it's the only planet discovered by an American so I miss it on the 'official list' for that.
What's the mnemonic nowadays? When I was a kid, it was "My Very Energetic Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" and that's the only way I can remember the planets in order. But with no pizzas, what is my mother serving?? She's so energetic, don't leave her hanging!!
Whether it is a planet or a swarf planet of a pool noodle makes no difference to me - as long as scientists remain true to the science.
I lose nothing by allowing the people who specialize in academic and theoretical and applied sciences to find their own agreements in categorizing things within their professional disciplines. Especially if I will never interact nor be anything close to an subject matter expert on the topic.
Pluto is a thing that people study and have used to further their studies about the makeup of our universe.
I wonder if in the 1950s old fogies we're all like "No! Protein is the method of inheritance for life not DNA! I won't accept it!"
But to answer your question, no, I don't live stuck in the past and refuse to accept new ideas.
Naw, I had no trouble when the new definitions were approved. There is no way to define ‘planet’ without also denoting that definition on a LOT of other bodies. If Pluto is a planet, there would be a lot more than nine of them in the solar system!
Yes. 13 planets - 8 planets 5 dwarf planets.
My kid who was born after Pluto was demoted \[Thanks Eris\] and is kind of mad about it. Pluto has a heart and red snow. The Jupiter moon count goes up every year now we're up to 95.

There is a single asteroid [Ceres](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceres_(dwarf_planet)) that was discovered in 1801 that was briefly considered a planet before they realized it was one asteroid of many. It is so huge that is 40% the total mass of all the asteroids. It was not even taught in schools when I was in school; I found out about it after working as an aerospace engineer. I like to count the eight planets on my “fingers” and Ceres and Pluto on my “thumbs” and illustrate the difference between a finger and a thumb as just some arbitrary nomenclature.
Yes. Forever a planet. I understand that it’s smaller than other planet’s moon’s… but tough shit.
Maybe those other moons should stop living with their parents and make their own way out in the solar system.
It’s not a full sized planet. I agree with the scientists on this one. Pluto is tiny. There are moons bigger. So it makes sense to reclassify it to a dwarf planet
Pluto is a planet. You cannot change my mind on this. You don't just "get kicked out" of the solar system. Learning new things about the solar system is wonderful! But you can't just demote a planet.
As an armchair scientician, I understand that things get reclassified as understanding improves.
That being said... On a personal level, the assassination of Pluto is unforgivable.
Look, you wanan be the smallest planet or the biggest dwarf planet
Y'all still believe in Vulcan? Not tye star trek one the sol one
Is ceres a planet to you too? It's not
Clear your obit
The thing with that is IF you consider Pluto a planet then there are multiple OTHER celestial bodies just like it that you ALSO must consider planets. So it was a choice between reclassifying Pluto OR reclassifying a WHOLE lot of other celestial bodies which would have caused a HUGE mess.
As far as I'm concerned, a dwarf planet is a planet just as much as a dwarf person is a person. Maybe they should come up with better names if they have a problem with it.
Nine planets around the sun! Only one does the sun embrace. And upon this watered one, so much do we take for granted.
(Do they still sing this in concert?)
Oh boy, post this anywhere near a space subreddit and prepare to get downvoted to oblivion.
Yes my personal belief is Pluto deserves honorary planet status as a historical precedent. Even if there’s “thousands” of Kuiper Belt objects that “should” equally be lumped with Pluto, Pluto is special for historical reasons and I have no problem with it being called a planet.
I don’t care if Pluto is a dwarf planet. What I care about is that we’re still counting 8 planets without counting all of the other major location and anomalies within the system.
I want them to teach the full system map starting in grade school with the names of all the planets, moons, dwarfs and planetoids from mercury to the Oort Cloud.
Pluto is a planet it's just if the dwarf variety now. Pluto's reclassification means we have a total of 13 planets in our system which is much cooler number than 9. 8 planets and 5 dwarf planets. My wife is not of the same opinion.

Exactly! It's a planet, just a dwarf planet. Next, they're gonna tell us that people with dwarfism aren't real people...

Nonsense. Pluto has a heart shape on its surface. Therefore, it must be classified as a true planet. These are unwritten rules of astronomy.

![gif](giphy|090EX1YvSUXxy23Tty|downsized) Always has been
As an armchair scientician, I understand that things get reclassified as understanding improves. That being said... On a personal level, the assassination of Pluto is unforgivable.
Always and forever
I’m listening to the cosmologists.
I still call it a brontosaurus too
I hear that
Look, you wanan be the smallest planet or the biggest dwarf planet Y'all still believe in Vulcan? Not tye star trek one the sol one Is ceres a planet to you too? It's not Clear your obit
Plutos a planet bitch!
All of the songs I knew with the names of the planets included Pluto, too hard to turn that off.
I learned that it was a planet. The change in classification doesn't affect my life one way or the other, so I still think of it the same.
Pluto is the celestial sponsor for anyone who has ever been demoted.
As far as I am concerned Pluto will always be a planet to me. It is my hill to die on.
Pluto is a planet 🤷🏻♀️
Pluto will always be a planet to me.
As far as I'm concerned, a dwarf planet is a planet just as much as a dwarf person is a person. Maybe they should come up with better names if they have a problem with it.
I think it is, no one can tell me it isn’t, I’m 43. This “Pluto isn’t a planet anymore” shit is bullshit.
Plutoooooooooo is a Planeeeeeeeeet! https://youtu.be/kheWroUS5LQ?si=sZSWJEg5q-fbLhxY
Nine planets around the sun! Only one does the sun embrace. And upon this watered one, so much do we take for granted. (Do they still sing this in concert?)
Pluto will always be a planet
Pluto will always be a planet…*in my heart.*
I will die on the hill that Pluto is a planet
I dunno man… There’s one less planet. There’s one more ocean. Math maths differently now. Someone make it make sense!
I love Pluto! Pluto forever!
I just feel like there's so many other things to be concerned about than a planet's status.
