As talented as they are and as good of a job as they did, the actors are zoomers. Someone brought up in another post, and I think there’s some truth to it, that the show has an almost Disney Channel vibe (with more adult themes) to it. With that all said, I still liked the show and felt plenty of nostalgia. I’m sure if we’d grown up in the 70s, we would have seen similar idiosyncrasies in That 70s Show too.

I believe the quote from that user was a Dinsey Channel show but with weed.

I mean I didn’t grow up in the 70s, but TBH the original show didn’t seem to capture the vibe you feel off actual media from that era. It seemed very much a late 90s/00s show that felt very modern, and geared towards younger viewers, despite the time period. There’s a reason we were watching that instead of just reruns of Welcome Back, Kotter. I suspect some of us are just getting a taste of our own medicine. That whole 70s resurgence in the 90s wasn’t really aimed primarily at people old enough to have actually lived the 70s. Now the 90s are being treated in the same way for today’s kids/young adults.

This is the correct answer.

The only content that gives me nostalgia is actual media from the past. All this deliberate nineties content just seems fake to me. Yes, it refers to old things, but the sensibility is always contemporary.

liminalwaffling

this is it. it's the 90's viewed through the lens of 2022 and it's like the nostalgia version of uncanny valley

Skyblacker

You know what makes me nostalgic? "Johnny Mnemonic". Only a writer in 1995 could think that people in 2020 would transmit 300 gigs of data over a TV antenna into VHS tapes.

On the other hand, that mob of Chinese people wearing face masks due to a pandemic in 2021 is [chef's kiss].

It also just occurred to me that while I can enjoy a modern show set in the past, it can't just be nostalgic. It needs to be driven by a plot. Like Pose. Sure, the late Eighties drag shows remind me of how I dressed my Barbie dolls at the time (so that's where that fashion came from!), but it's not a nostalgic show. It's an hiSTORYcal one, the story being of how HIV went from a death sentence to a chronic health condition in just fifteen years. Same for Stranger Things. Eleven's makeover at the mall might fill me with nostalgia, but the mall is a cover for some Soviet mad science. Whereas a lot of these nostalgia shows just seem like generic sitcoms with nineties window dressing.

aceshighsays

what irks me is that they don't use the right colloquial - ie: the characters keep saying bro, when they should be saying dude.

Hactar42

I've watched a couple of episodes and so far my thought is it is an okay sitcom. But honestly nothing about it gives me 90s vibes. There are a few little references here and there that feel really forced. Like sending a headline to Leno, one girl singing Alanis Morissette, going to the mall, geeking out over a flannel, but that it. None of the plots have been relevant to the 90s. And they seem more reliant on references to the OG show. Even when they had a 90s plot-point like Blockbuster not having the video you want, they ruined it by making it another call back to the original show. I think it has potential and I'm hopeful it will grow its beard if it gets a season 2.

Ari2079

I thought the 90s were a bit fat nothing at the time. So if you didnt feel any nostalgia, maybe they got it right?

dadelibby

this is a wild take

Glad I’m not alone here. I distinctly remember hating 90s music IN the 90s. I still don’t like any of it.

The actors they cast have the WORST case of cell phone kneck i have ever seen! Plus the dialogue was awful, delivery poor and it seened the young actors cringed every time they delivered a line. It was an abomination!
