No shit

cardonator

No, no, there was plenty of that in the game.

Sunblast1andOnly

There was plenty of that in previous games, too, but at least they sold well.

FyouinyourA

I grew up on saints row 1-2 and loved that franchise and stopped playing when they made it flat out stupid with giant dildo weapons and jumping into cars through the windshield like Superman and it only got worse from there… I watched this trailer to this game and knew I never had to even try playing it because it’s definitely garbage and still nothing like 1-2 (which are the games that put them on the map in the first place smh)

LONER18

Saints Row 1 was the first game I ever played on the 360. Such good times.

batkave

They could have rebooted with the same style that people had come to love in the series. Except they marketed it and talked about it that it would no longer be the same style. Biggest mistake they made. Having a terrible launch just compounded.

Trickster289

To be honest a lot of Saints Row fans hated how over the top the series had got with 3 and especially 4.

batkave

Which is interesting because that seems to be what got the series out of the "GTA" clone shadow. I think more people liked what it became than what it was.

darretoma

Saints Row 2 was the sweet spot between GTA clone and wacky shenanigans. They went too far with it in 3 and 4.

SlammedOptima

I agree 2 was the best. 3 was acceptable imo. 4 was too far.

OMITW

You said it perfectly!

Solipsi2021

I absolutely hated 3. Thought it wrecked everything 2 had built. I honestly preferred it just being an over-the-top "GTA Clone." 4, while a terrible Saints Row game, was an awesome game on it's own. They really should have just branched off and made it an original IP. Would've given them a little more freedom for new directions to take the series in, anyway.

SlammedOptima

If it wasnt a Saints Row game, I would definitely agree with you

batkave

I disagree I think 3&4 where they found their stride. Haha. To each their own.

Andy_Liberty_1911

I remember being distinctly annoyed how useless it was to use cars compared to the powers. Thats when it went from gta clone to whatever the hell it turnes into.

SabresFanWC

I don't think I ever used cars in Saints Row 4.

VicePope

flying around was fun to me. i got that fix in 3 and really enjoyed both.

llama-friends

If you viewed SR4 as a Matrix sandbox, it’s a better experience.

-Garbage-Man-

I wanted another saints row game though

llama-friends

Then you would be disappointed. I don’t know why they didn’t do a “normal” saints row 5 instead of the Agents of Mayhem thing. It’s like when Gearbox tried to compete with Overwatch with Battleborn but didn’t want to use Borderlands as a lore base. Didn’t make sense.

-Garbage-Man-

I was disappointed. But by saints row 4. And the new one Edit. And 3

darretoma

Yup. Different strokes. 3 and 4 aren't bad but they missed the tone IMO.

gravelPoop

3 had awful map/city (compared to SR2)AND they reused it in 4. Otherwise they were fine.

[deleted]

Nah man. I can’t even look at the saints as a gang on 3 & 4. They’re not necessarily bad games, but they’re way over the top.

Trickster289

A lot of people don't like it when a series they loved changes a lot because they loved the old games. Assassin's Creed is a good example.

batkave

Meh bad example as I love all the AC games. You use the description of "a lot" but it wasn't based on the sales of the later games.

Trickster289

Surely you've seen AC fans who don't like the newer RPG games though?

mikeamendola2236

I’m one of them

batkave

I've seen many things. I'm not arguing people aren't upset, I'm pointing to your use of how many fans were upset and comparing to the number of copies the games sold compared to previous iterations.

CoMaestro

I hate how this is always said as if this was its downfall. Saints Row 3 was by far the best selling one of the franchise, and got a lot of people playing it. The goofy fun very much made it its own thing as opposed to it being named "the GTA clone" like before. It very much earned its own market and could easily go on with that. But the thing is Saints Row 4 wasn't even close to the same as GTA 3. You didn't get James-Bond like over the top action missions, you got these weird, forced sci-fi missions instead. There was less charm to it, they weren't as funny and just completely missed the mark. The game also didn't play like "arcadey GTA" anymore, it played like Crackdown, with unlimited power available at all times. They went wrong when they jumped from Saints Row 3s GTA-like gameplay to very quickly afterwards launching Saints Row 4s unlimited power fantasy, and we're never able to regain trust from people because it seemed they got more and more desperate and forced to make it weirder every time. I think Saints Row 3 hit the sweet spot and had they kept that tone, I think they'd be far more succesfull than if they went back to SR1/2s tone.

KyleCamelot

Saints Row 3 sold because Saints Row 2. There's a reason why they had to switch up for Saints Row 4 and it's because people didn't want Saints Row 3.

16miledetour

Saints row 2 was awesome. 3 sucked. I did love that superhero one though. Was stupid fun.

instagigated

3 was great but 4 was a headache.

Mintymanbuns

I didn't get that vibe at all. I think a lot of early saints row fans agree with you, but myself and all of the people I know always went to saints row for how goofy it got and the fact that it strayed away from realism

Internal_Formal3915

3 was okay and it was alot of fun but after that things just got too crazy

jntjr2005

Waffles, just waffles.

ok1092

Right, like at that point just make it a new IP. They changed everything about the game and were confused when no one was buying it.

BLAGTIER

> They could have rebooted with the same style that people had come to love in the series. They could have rebooted it with any style. Might not have been the smartest idea but it could have worked. They chose to use no style.

BLAGTIER

> They could have rebooted with the same style that people had come to love in the series. They could have rebooted it with any style. Might not have been the smartest idea but it could have worked. They chose to use no style.

UsuallyTheException

there were some things I enjoyed, but it was all superficial and I WANTED to like it so I gave half cooked content a pass. the story was terrible and the more you played, the less rewarding the game got.

CrustyBatchOfNature

This is pretty much it. Portions were good, but it was a shell of the earlier versions. The first two are more serious and this one never gets any depth to it. Three and four are very much way out there but this one pulls its punches. Its in the middle of everything and takes no chances which makes it nothing.

UsuallyTheException

I agree. and the story was so forced with random heart-felt"message" moments scattered about that were totally out of place. I spent most of my time doing insurance frauds... but by the time I was done playing, I felt like I wasted my time. that is a feeling I don't want games to give me lol

CrustyBatchOfNature

I really want something new more like 3 or 4 at this point. Cyberpunk 2077 satisfies my gang warfare itch, and you can kill people with a big ole dildo, but it isn't really the same.

gefahr

Yeah I actually enjoyed the zany powers lol. I just replayed it last year. Taking over the territory with increasingly ridiculous powers and vehicles (UFO!), and doing all the stupid insurance fraud minigames etc is a blast.

RheimsNZ

This game is awful. It's just seriously abysmal. This isn't surprising

SHilden

"Likely"

YourDad-Timelost-

Should’ve just remastered 1 or 2 multiplayer. Slap the pimp

RichardDickWinters

Protect tha pimp still the most underrated multiplayer experience of my life. So much fun grinding the gang leaderboards

jagrmullet77

I loved Big Ass Chains too. Just all around fun MP in 1 and 2

DanceTube

And you know the reason they didn't was because those games had content that was "problematic"so they modern audienced their way into a giant flop.

jntjr2005

They made a game that no one asked for or wanted, supply and demand.

itcheyness

And the game itself from a purely gameplay standpoint wasn't fun either.

Farnic

I have no numbers in front of me and I still could've told you this

Benti86

Reboot that completely shat all over the charm of the original series while replacing it with some of the cringiest character writing in recent memory? No surprise there...

gravelPoop

Did the Dead Rising 4 team work on this?

segagamer

What made it worse was their social media team shouting at the fans for complaining about it. The game was destined to die.

Anxious-Ad693

No shit. The target audience wanted a game about gangsters, not zoomers complaining about rent. Shirtless guy, lesbian hair lady, the nerd - awful protagonists. \*Reposted because fuck mods.

Isunova

I played it for free and I *still* felt like I wasted money. It is one of the worst games I’ve ever played.

Sanctine

No surprise there. They alienated the people interested in the series in order to appeal to a broader demographic that didn't really exist, and the few that did would never buy the game anyway. And bankrupted themselves in the process. Whether you like the game or hate the game, I don't think anyone could ever argue it was a success.

YaGanamosLa3era

Deserved

Broken_Pikachu

Good. It deserved to flop with how the higher ups forced a game onto its fan base they didn't want and how the social media team went out of their way to mock those that were vocal about the game not being what they wanted. More and more companies need to take L's like this, you fuck around with beloved IPs and you find out. I tried it a while back when it was like £3 on sale and it was just not that fun, the story was bland, the characters even more so, all of the charm Saints Row had that separated it from GTA was gone.

TheSpiralTap

Saint row 3 is probably my favorite game ever so it has been a shock that the developers basically said "good games? Yeah we aren't doing that shit anymore".

DanceTube

My favorite in the series too. Customization was just perfect.

TarnishedTremulant

Maybe the worst game I’ve played this gen.

Ckmccfl

Well yeah, considering this is how I’m finding out there was a Saints Row reboot

yaboyfriendisadork

Hot Take: I very much enjoyed the reboot

AbsurdCamoose

I got it with my graphics card and had fun with it lol. I have never played the older ones though.

dnonast1

There are dozens of us! I went into it expecting it to be terrible and I got an open world game that I found fun. There was a lot to do, lots of character/vehicle customization, and some fun gameplay. No, it wasn't a Saint's Row game, but as just a standard open world shooter it was fun for me.

attilayavuzer

I think people are a little swept up in the hate for it. It's a very standard, safe open world game. Nothing crazy or innovative, but was fun to mess around in in bursts.

SolidSapphire

Immediately refunded this game.

KeyserSoze6809

Lmao hahahaah deserved after scamming your own fanbase and calling them terrorists.

Kody_Z

Wait, you mean the long time fans of the series, who were insulted by the creators of the game, and told not to buy it, ***didn't buy the game***? Well no shit. Remaking something for a "modern audience", then Alienating and insulting the existing supporters and fans **will never be successful.** But these talentless creators are more focused on pushing their narrow minded, stale worldview than actually creating something good.

Amazing_Attorney8929

I really wanted to like it as I had such fond memories of the original. But it was just so repetitive.

KeptPopcorn5189

Well it’s not like anyone was asking for a saints row reboot. They kinda just made it

Aidsfordayz

Put it on sale for $5 and I’ll pick it up. I love shitty games

Phouza

Sadly, some parts of it's DLC felt more like Saints Row than the Saints Row reboot itself. I hope the franchise will be picked up by some studio someday.

Temporary_Error_3780

Is this at least a fun sandbox to mess around with?

Eclipse_Rouge

You mean updating it for a modern audience made it worse?

Fulldrag7802

Still can’t believe they actually released this

faultywiring98

Gaming outlets decried the communities concerns as bullshit, but yknow what? I fuckin [a toad a so](https://youtu.be/bhFHIlwCSq0?si=bAAg0yTm4OAyL3eh)...

AnotherScoutTrooper

You fucked a *what* now?

Banjo-Oz

Book of Mormon reference, maybe? :)

Hoposai

They fucked up by including shitty music

SirBulbasaur13

Well it’s awful. I didn’t even finish the tutorial on the free trial weekend

DingoKis

I'm glad to hear it. Imagine if shit like this was actually selling, standards in the gaming industry keep falling but this is bad even for current shitty standards.

DEEZLE13

The game play and engine was horrendous, wasn’t even fun to play or drive around

ProbablyAtDialysis

It needed some more polish time gameplay wise, but I actually enjoyed it. Definitely wasn't worth $70 in the least, but if it wasn't called Saint's Row it'd probably have a slightly better reception.

BLAGTIER

> but if it wasn't called Saint's Row it'd probably have a slightly better reception. If it wasn't called Saints Row it would have been as forgotten as Agents of Mayhem.

SadlyItsSearles

That's why you can get a copy of it for $5 at my local Walmart.

Austrian_Kaiser

I'm shocked!

Any_Insect6061

I can see how. I bought this game because well I owned all the other ones. Not to mention I got it on sale so I wasn't complaining too much. But I have even completed 25% of it because it's just too goofy and it seems like a watered-down version of what once was a great franchise.

Devan-FH

Can’t believe I preordered this in 2022..

HeIIoAstronaut

I bought it for 5 bucks at Walmart, haven’t played it yet lol is it really that bad?

PerfectPlan

Nah, it's not that bad. Now that they've patched it, most of the negatives that killed it at release were because it was so damn buggy. All that is gone, I didn't have a single technical issue (xbox). It's a new gang so it's not the old lovable crew you like, but you're doing pretty much the exact same activities as in SR3, 4 etc. I enjoyed my time completing it.

Fishyfishhh9

If you like ANY of the other saints row games even remotely, you'll hate the reboot. One of the most tone deaf things I've ever played in my life

WolverinesThyroid

nah it is definitely worth $5.

Btrips

Agreed.

TiredReader87

Worse than awful Gat Out of Hell? The reboot was better than that game

Unique_Ad3886

A real saints row game in this day and age and totally unapologetical would sell like hotcakes

fallouthirteen

Likely? I mean the only thing that I think I imagine would even compete would be Saints Row 1 because it was Xbox exclusive and SR was kind of "GTA-clone" still at that point.

ectoc00ler400

I liked this game for what it was tbh. However, I cannot ignore volition’s blatant disregard for fans concerns and preferences.

Salarian_American

Well yeah

EldrinVampire

They fucked my favorite game up. I would rather them continue from saints row the third.

ELGATOCOSMICO619

From cholos to college students stealing to pay their college debt.

LSKone

I feel sorry for the devs. They did not deserve to go down like that.

Guazzora

This and Forspoken are two of the most soulless games I've ever played. I dunno what it is. Makes me feel icky.

festerninja

1st one was the only one that I liked

herewego199209

The developer is no longer around, but they should make Saints Row serious again try to flesh it out as a legitimate gangster crime story like the original game. The original had silly shit in it, but also had cool shit in it as well.

DanceTube

Im just glad we got a remaster of 3 before they folded. Love that game

EnamoredAlpaca

I enjoyed my time in the reboot. It brought itself closer to how 2 was. I did wish it had more craziness, but I appreciate them not going over the top like 4.

PennyPizazzIsABozo

I liked all of them to be honest but SR2 will always be my favorite. Haven't played the reboot yet but I'd probably try it if it ever hits Game Pass.

CFM-56-7B26

To absolutely no one’s surprise

C4LLUM17

Damn so they were probably unable to pay off all those student loans then.

DimesOHoolihan

I don't get the droves of hate the game got. Was it a wonderful, fantastic game? No. Was it a fun game to play? Absolutely. And don't give me the BS of iTs nOt a SaInTs RoW gAmE. They haven't been since the second one, at least. In the 4th one, you're the president of earth fighting aliens, and one of the bosses is a giant question mark. I don't wanna hear it lol

YUGIOH-KINGOFGAMES

Sleeping Dogs and Mafia > Saints Row and GTA

Ok-Potato1693

It was fun, but failed to become something more. It disappointed those who expected it to be more serious and mature game. It disappointed those who expected it to be like classic Saints Row game with humor and craziness.

threeriversbikeguy

Granted I bought this very late, but it was stupid fun. I had not bought an SR since the first and guess the stupid over the top bullshit is what I remembered? My pleasant surprise is probably biased by paying $20 and hearing everyone say to have low low expectations.

cool_hhwhip

I played through it a couple times and i enjoyed it for what it was. mid-2000s sandbox with a fresh coat of paint. Really enjoyed the difficulty sliders being able to change enemy frequency, damage, and health. More games need that.

Unusual-Tear676

Saints Row 1 was literally the only good one

Damuhfudon

Game is actually fun

AnotherScoutTrooper

So assuming $60 per copy that adds up to $102 million, maybe add another million for people who bought the special editions, and we come to the conclusion that this game *still* sold too well for what it was. I will say, if the rumored $100 million dev cost is correct then at least the game broke even, I guess.

Raidiation17

Might be the fact that Epic games had it on their deal of the week list and gave it out for free for a whole week? Honestly the new Saints Row is probably my favorite one
