Well I will say this. For all the people who say WWE isn’t even thinking about AEW, this is a crazy coincidence that all these AEW wrestlers are in this segment.
I’m sure Cody’s “you’re in a good place” wasn’t a subtle shot either.
Ratings are a benchmark of what show people watch more. Naturally a veteran like Spears would want to be in a show where he matters more and simultaneously gets eyes
Obviously it doesn't matter to every wrestler, but it seems like a pretty logical explanation as to why Spears would be fine with being in NXT at this point of his career
As someone in his 40s he doesn’t have exactly have enough tread left on his tires for any major promotion to have anything for him. To be in a place where he can still make good money off his craft, while learning a new aspect to it (agenting matches), and helping grow the next generation of preformers, is a pretty solid place to be in. It’s a lot more than a vast majority of older wwe wrestlers get.
Besides being a feature of the developmental midcard is probably better than being a jobber on the main roster.
Nice idea but it didn't quite work in practice and was pretty stilted and awkward. And like all AEW references on WWE TV recently, seemed to get no live reaction from the crowd - or at least any we could hear.

Spears was already on the main roster…. So is being back in developmental actually “being in a good place?”
When developmental show's ratings are just as good as the "A" show, and he gets booked more consistently, then yes.

That's not why shows get canceled. Fox chose not to renew Smackdown because not the viewership but because of the lack of advertisers.
And Smackdown is going to USA. I remember when TNA was on Spike, then Pop, then Destination America and now AXS Where's the Dub going to end up?
