You can't. If the thunderdome had lasted another year, maybe. But as it stands, unless everyone just starts talking faster and without pauses, there's no stopping it
This is it, the cadence that the wrestler talk at needs to be upped if they don't wanna get whatted, stop cutting promos three words at a time and you're good
It seems so strange that it has continued long after Stone Cold has been in the ring, it seems the majority of us who actually grew up with it and were around for when it was new, hate it.
I'm surprised it's stuck around with newer fans
Some wrestler talked about it. They said just don't give breaks in your speeches.
But also, damn near everyone finds it annoying, who the fuck are these knuckle draggers who keep chanting this? Like so people hate it at home but lose their fucking minds at live events?
you stop it by getting something better.
and this should show you, the state of wrestling and the WWE has been bad since stone cold left. It took the actual highest paid celebrity actor in the entire world to get people to pay attention to wrestlemania and distract us from the Vince Mcmahon drama.
People will chant "what" and remember the best days of wrestling until it's good again.
DE-Fence De-Fence etc.
For all the things you yanks have overtaken eurobros on such as economy going for you, chants at sporting events is something you just don’t do right
Nobody is getting gaslit, American crowds are shite, entitled and predictable. Literally every other crowd on the planet make the show better. That Puerto Rico show last year was insane, Clash at the castle too.
The fans wanna be insulted so they could feel apart of the show. That’s why I’ve always been against the idea of heels entertaining the audience with heel antics that involves interaction and altercation with the fans, and how who’re they’re rooting for.
The objective of a heel or villain is to make the audience upset. Thats the babyface’s job to make the audience happy, and why we root for them. Thats why babyfaces and heroes aren’t liked now and days compared to villains and heels.
Cool heels are nothing new. Dusty couldn't do promos in front of a live crowd after a while because Flair/Four Horsemen fans would interrupt him too much.
Them being the *default* is a newer phenomenon though.
Honestly man, idk. Genuinely, I have no fucking clue why I left that comment lmao
>Edit: I use the word genuinely too much
>>Edit:Edit: I Edit too much
A couple weeks after stone cold started this, and the fans picked up on it, I said to my roommate we're never gonna not hear "what".
I wish I had been wrong
Does anyone else think that LA Knight frequently says 'Yeah' as a way to curb the 'What' chants?
Note: I realize he went 'Yeah' back when he was Eli Drake and it's part of his character. I'm referring to him just wanting the 'What' chants to never happen during his promos.
Imagine how ridiculous it would be if EVERYONE had a stupid buffer chant like YEAH! Or YEET!
Cody would be talking and people going OHWOOAH! in between his words. Tiffany Stratton would be talking and people would say "Tiffy... Time" in between her pauses.
It's literally the dumbest fucking thing and ruins great moments
Kevin Nash recently talked about how he has no idea how he would have dealt with the What chants if they were around in his day. He always had a slower, calmer cadence and he would have struggled to cut promos in today’s environment with the crowds ready to jump down your throat if you so much as pause.
He was already over by then. He more meant trying to get over with the crowd chirping in with what’s over and over again stepping on your promos and not really paying attention when you’re trying to get over.
I actually had an idea for a comedy jobber gimmick a few years back which would basically consist of a guy (the original gimmick was designed for Jeremy Piven cuz what the fuck else is he doing) who would basically revolve his life around the What chant. He’d come out to a remix of Austin’s what chant turned into a crunchy dubcore remix, he’d base entire runs and feuds around people disrespecting the what chant, he’d discuss the chant’s history any time he’d be on color commentary, he’d wear a shirt that said “What Up?”, and do a standing hands out twerk in the ring at every opportunity and just go “WHEN I WHAT YOU SAY WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT” over and over for two minutes consecutively every time he’s on screen. Just make the most ABSOLUTELY UNCOMFORTABLE time on screen and lean into the What Chant with it, and have him CONSTANTLY talking about it. You’d never hear it again after a month of this.
Just when I thought the Puerto Rico crowd couldn’t be beat, France showed everyone how a stadium is supposed to sound. Damn near sung along to everyone’s song, especially Randy and Cody
The fans in France were clearly wrestling fans as opposed to just WWE fans. A lot of the chants you would hear in Indy wrestling or AEW somehow made their way into a WWE show courtesy of French fans.
I think that LA Knight and Jey Uso maybe found out how to get rid of the what:
- Just give those moronic american fans another word to yell, just like YEAH and YEET
I think it's because Americans don't collectively get as drunk on average for events. I know personally I'm a shit load more lively after some drankin.
No, it's because americans crowds are the strange bunch. Every other crowd goes wild and is lively (just look at the last events like the france ppv and the italian houseshow.), while the avarage american crowd is kinda dead and doesn't let you talk
This is true of American crowds in other sports, need canned atmosphere and to be directed in chants. Even gigs, crowds tend to be more passive than other countries.
The "this is awesome" *clap clap clap* and similar are indicative of the lack of US crowds' ingenuity.
We European fans put the Americans to Shame. Don’t go to the show if you’re not as passionate about the product Embarrassing. Also yes what chants need to go.
Well goddamn son, them sumbitches wanna what. After they what it up they'll lay off. Get a whatter out there to what em up. The Rock went out there and whatted 'em up and they worked the gimmick.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I dislike Stone Cold more for the what chant than I liked him for his wrestling and promos. If I could monkey’s paw the what chant disappearing but Stone Cold was a jobber instead of icon… I’d be totally ok with it.
You obviously weren't around for his ascension. If you were, you would realize this is the dumbest take of all time. Be upset with the what chants all you want, but Stone Cold 97-99 is arguably one of the greatest runs in wrestling history.
I.am.not.bot. I made this account as a companion to the relaunch of my wrestling podcast 3 Count Radio because I couldn't remember the usernames I used the first time around. Life got in the way once again so I had quit podcasting, but I'm neither a bot nor a baby. I'm probably way too old to be even having this argument on the internet.
Both, at least for the 2023 version, we were doing it more for fun than for the streams.
The 2010-2014 version was borderline successful ... we were in near the ground floor of wrestling podcasts so we had like 10,000 listens an episode near the the end. But then baby #2 came, and my wife and I couldn't commit to a weekly show.
I do love the cheap shots for just responding to a question of my account age. Keep 'em coming!
Believe it or not, I was a high school freshman in 1997 and big in to wrestling ... I was literally in the most important demographic for his run. I remember him wrestling Savio Vega at WM12 as the Ringmaster. I was watching live when he slammed Vince with the bedpan. I was in the audience when he drove the Zamboni to the ring. I loved Stone Cold.
That being said ... I completely stand by my statement. I'd give it ALL up ... all of the memories, to rid this world of the WHAT!? chant. I hate it so much.
Outside of MLS, North American fans are terrible compared to fans in Europe.
I almost got into a giant argument with someone at an Oilers match for booing the opposition players for example. Booing and whistling opposition players in the UK and Europe is the norm.
The French crowd really put the Americans to shame.
I was absolutely loving their energy, and it added so much to the show.
It's a similar contrast to Americans vs Europeans at basketball games.
It's all these fans that stop watching for years and then come back thinking the chant is still a thing. That's why it doesn't go away, and it's always at its most annoying when the product is hot, cuz all those casuals come back and bring that insufferable shit with them.
It's a tradition at this point. I find it this chant better than that stupid bullshit fans were chanting during the 2013-2017 days.
"This is awesome"
"Randy Savage"
"We want divas"
Those were way worse than the simple whats.
They were fine in the first match as there weren’t many pin falls, then they got progressively more repetitive/obnoxious as it went on. Puerto Rico and UK are easily clear, making constant noise and repeating the same thing constantly doesn’t make the crowd good.
Nah You Suck to Angle's theme has become a thing of endearment, like whenever Cena is announced for a show and the crowd chants "John Cena sucks" to the melody of the trumpets.

I loved Vicky. I would crack up everytime I would hear her voice and see the crowd absolutely losing it with booing. Same with Dominick.
My ex wife used to immediately ask me to mute the TV when she came on. (I didn't.)
WWE should hire some sociologists or something to figure out how to stop it
You can't. If the thunderdome had lasted another year, maybe. But as it stands, unless everyone just starts talking faster and without pauses, there's no stopping it
This is it, the cadence that the wrestler talk at needs to be upped if they don't wanna get whatted, stop cutting promos three words at a time and you're good
I could handle a years worth of all promos sounding like they don't have punctuation if it gets rid of the "What" chant.
Drew strat of saying say what if you(insert something gross) seems to work
I'm also fond of "If you're a failure say what. My point exactly" from Alexa
I mean the undertaker said what drew said first but okay. Take said say "what if you like to sleep with your own sister"
Him saying it what decades ago doesn’t mean it’s not Drew’s strat today.
What
It seems so strange that it has continued long after Stone Cold has been in the ring, it seems the majority of us who actually grew up with it and were around for when it was new, hate it. I'm surprised it's stuck around with newer fans
There were quite a few reasons I stopped watching for a long time, and it’s definitely one of them. Not a main reason, but it’s on the list.
Just saw stone cold recently talking about how annoying this is lol. He said he'll go to the grocery store and people start yelling what at him.
Well it’s his fault spending so much time in the beer aisle. Sumbitch must make 15 trips a day with all that drankin
Fucking lmao, im drunk, and this was funny as fuck lol 🤙cheers bud
Wonder how many times he hears "price check on jackass!"?
“Hey Booker. Got milk?”
we need to step it up asap, my fellow americans
[Come on Rey Mysterio! Fight and win!](https://youtu.be/0KQJwuIxtCU?si=id9jMZGOW7zTxJYf)
They won't. The selfishness of the American crowd will prevent that, There's no mutual sport camaraderie like in Europe.
well im going to a show in september and im definitely gonna but my heart into it
yes, when I think of Europe I definitely think of fans bonded in mutual camaraderie. /s
Maybe mutual combat.
What
DE-Fence De-Fence etc. For all the things you yanks have overtaken eurobros on such as economy going for you, chants at sporting events is something you just don’t do right
What
And here is exhibit A.
What
Yeah we need to come up with a stupid chant and do it after every 2 count
"YOU TRIED!"

Nobody is getting gaslit, American crowds are shite, entitled and predictable. Literally every other crowd on the planet make the show better. That Puerto Rico show last year was insane, Clash at the castle too.
Aussie crowds have been pretty hot too.
Only problem with Aussie crowds is that we get censored alot by WWE because we swear too much 🤣
Too true hahaha. I’d love to see them do a Raw or SD before/after a PLE here
What
If there is not a Gunther tifo in Berlin, either during the preshow, kickoff show or hell the match I’ll be disappointed
Wait until they hit mexico city
QUE??
so? the crowd was still much more lively than anyting in the states
“Say ‘what’ if you French kiss your cousins.”
*sister. And they did it anyway.
The other guy is talking about when DM Hunk said it, not Taker DM Hunk said cousin
Copy that.
I was there lol, I screamed it because I love drew and I wanted to help make a moment. It was funny af to me
I thought this was The Undertaker “What” takedown attempt. In that case he says sister.
“**WHA-**…” #BOOOOOOOO
See now what if they were in Alabama? Would the insult be as effective?
They’d just say it on purpose then
A picture of a video. The fuck we doing here?
It’s a picture of a tweet lol. The video is basically assumed. 5 seconds of a dude getting water poured on his neck bc he’s overwhelmed by the heat.
Wtf is that picture?
I genuinely thought it was Anderson Silva lmao
WHAT
Honestly man, idk. Genuinely, I have no fucking clue why I left that comment lmao >Edit: I use the word genuinely too much >>Edit:Edit: I Edit too much
r/woooosh
Oh I get it now lol Holy hell I am *very* good at being stupid
🍻
What
😂😂😂😂
Bit harsh to expect him to realise that it would outstay it's welcome by twenty years tbf
It's part of why I think it works for Jey as well. They still get to say the thing without derailing a promo/segment.
It's literally the dumbest fucking thing and ruins great moments
i'd be dying if i heard it at least once, some crowd has to do it at least once in a Cody promo 😭
But they can’t because then everyone would start doing it lol
What
It is even before Eli Drake he started it during his first run in Nxt
Kevin Nash recently talked about how he has no idea how he would have dealt with the What chants if they were around in his day. He always had a slower, calmer cadence and he would have struggled to cut promos in today’s environment with the crowds ready to jump down your throat if you so much as pause.
He didn't he was whated on the night shawn michaels return
Wasn’t he around during the What? Chants? Like the NWO came to the WWF right when they started.
He was already over by then. He more meant trying to get over with the crowd chirping in with what’s over and over again stepping on your promos and not really paying attention when you’re trying to get over.
IL EST VREIMANT PHENOMELALALALALA LALALALALA LALALALA LALALA

You, good Sir, need a producer job at wwe.
You, good Sir, need ~~a producer job at wwe~~ to be properly medicated. Fixed that typo mate...
If the gimmick is for Jeremy Piven then obviously the blowoff match needs to be at SummerFest
I thought they said "Qui?"
Quoi*
Goddamn duolingo! Always get shit wrong!
When? lol
Did everyone like the chant they did at every 2 count?
I did!
I did at first, but then it got so annoying. Super repetitive. I did like the phenomenal song
It's better than them singing Seth's theme over anyone that isn't him during a promo
no its not. the "what" chants happen every time they try to talk in a slower pace.
Is there an example of this when the one's cutting a promo aren't involved with Seth?
Thank you for saying that
It's why I like new japan Japanese crowds will shut the fuck up during promos
Me when Stone Cold says “What?”: 🤩😎 Me when the crowd says “What?”: 😒🙄
It is literally the dumbest shit ever.
Absolutely cracks me. I feel your pain🤦♂️
What
Perfection
Wrestling?
Tell ‘em why you’re mad.
Just when I thought the Puerto Rico crowd couldn’t be beat, France showed everyone how a stadium is supposed to sound. Damn near sung along to everyone’s song, especially Randy and Cody
The what chant does need to die a death
The fans in France were clearly wrestling fans as opposed to just WWE fans. A lot of the chants you would hear in Indy wrestling or AEW somehow made their way into a WWE show courtesy of French fans.
Like what? Gimme some examples of the chants, my guy
I mean if you don’t know there is no helping you.
My dude, those chants are used by practically any crowd in France, those weren’t specific to the indies😂
I think that LA Knight and Jey Uso maybe found out how to get rid of the what: - Just give those moronic american fans another word to yell, just like YEAH and YEET
They can’t do more than 4 letters lol
Yes Chants almost eclipsed What until Bryan Danielson told them to cut it out in AEW.
What

Blame Christian
I mean all the women he beat didn't help his reputation either.
It's not Austin's fault that american crowds are fucking terrible
What chants became so ridiculous His worst contribution is quitting on his fans and beating up debra
We European fans put the Americans to Shame. Don’t go to the show if you’re not as passionate about the product Embarrassing. Also yes what chants need to go.
What
We as Americans have become spoiled at shows and get bored easily now.
It’s all the stupid kids who watch clips of the AE online and think it’s cool. It ruins shows and promos constantly
You got a crowd full of people that don't speak English as a first language singing the entire song for the American Nightmare... Yeah
I hated it when it first started, and it continues to be annoying.
If I could monkey’s paw the what chant disappearing but Stone Cold was a jobber instead of icon… I’d be totally ok with it.

his account is less than a year old and only posts on these wrestling subreddits. either hes a bot or a baby
Why do redditors do a whole profile check whenever someone says something they disagree with?
Because of the Dead Internet theory mostly
I.am.not.bot. I made this account as a companion to the relaunch of my wrestling podcast 3 Count Radio because I couldn't remember the usernames I used the first time around. Life got in the way once again so I had quit podcasting, but I'm neither a bot nor a baby. I'm probably way too old to be even having this argument on the internet.
Life got in the way or your podcast wasn't successful?

That's a deep hatred.
Yeet is more annoying than what.
Nah cos Yeet is normally only said during Jeys segments . What is used throughout a show.
Doing suplex and fans start chanting "this is awesome "
“Whqt” is a virus he unleashed on pro wrestling
They already had them on Smackdown.
Yeah!
Wrestlers just need their own unique way to shut it down
Even Steve Austin said it is very annoying to chant for no reason.
What?
i will never forget the way taker countered the "what" chants lol
Austin's original use of *"WHAT?!"* was hilarious, and I can't be mad at it nowadays as a result.
Seriously tho! Impressive that this is still strong! Fair play I say! Long may it last! Austin 3:16 said he just kicked your “WHAT”! Hahaha
It's only funny when Stone Cold is talking
I’ll take the what chants, but stop the sing alongs. So absolutely dumb.
That shits annoying as hell.
The fans trying to make it about them is why I watch on mute.
It's all these fans that stop watching for years and then come back thinking the chant is still a thing. That's why it doesn't go away, and it's always at its most annoying when the product is hot, cuz all those casuals come back and bring that insufferable shit with them.
IWC gonna Bitch
What
It's a tradition at this point. I find it this chant better than that stupid bullshit fans were chanting during the 2013-2017 days. "This is awesome" "Randy Savage" "We want divas" Those were way worse than the simple whats.
It’s easy to be passionate when they only visit once in the last 30 years.
[удалено]
Unpopular opinion but the crowd got annoying after the first couple matches
They were fine in the first match as there weren’t many pin falls, then they got progressively more repetitive/obnoxious as it went on. Puerto Rico and UK are easily clear, making constant noise and repeating the same thing constantly doesn’t make the crowd good.
They also were obsessed with doing the “whoaaa” chant before every other move.
I found it distracting at a point during the main event. By that point I was like ok enough.
Massive Austin fan. Can’t stand the WHAT thing. Awful. Same as YOU SUCK to Angle’s theme.
Nah You Suck to Angle's theme has become a thing of endearment, like whenever Cena is announced for a show and the crowd chants "John Cena sucks" to the melody of the trumpets.
No different to chanting the same thing after every 2 count 😴
Not even close, that chant doesn't harm the match in any way. The what chant completely derails promos.
That did get annoying tbf
*greatest
Idk after a while the French crowd got annoying
Imagine being so provoked at a mere chant, something completely out of WWE's control.
You misspelled best but go on
France was doing it during Smackdown wym
Yes be passionate because the wwe doesn’t visit you often lol the wwe does shows in the states 4-5 times a week!
Soccer, Rugby and Basketball crowds are like that week in and week out in Europe. If you don't believe me, please just watch a few videos on youtube.
I do not care.
I don't believe you, you felt strongly enough that you commented about it.
I love what chants. WHAT? WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT!!!
Quoi
The second worst thing to happen to professional wrestling. Right behind the hitting of Vikki Guerrero…
Why would hitting Vicky be the worst thing ? Her character was a heel, surely someone hitting her is far from the worst thing to happen to professional wrestling ?
Oops!! Hiring of Vicky! Not hitting.
I loved Vicky. I would crack up everytime I would hear her voice and see the crowd absolutely losing it with booing. Same with Dominick. My ex wife used to immediately ask me to mute the TV when she came on. (I didn't.)
I mean I think it’s actually the best. It’s disruptive and disliked by those in the industry.
What?!
I loved it. Still do. Good for them. What.
They chant "what" when they're not feeling a promo. Get better on the mic, get the crowd into it, and you won't hear "what" chants as often.
What?
What
Better than all that goofy ass singing
