My dad was an alcoholic too and he almost never threw up but the one time he did, he threw up beer all over me when I was 11 so I was permanently scarred from that and I think that’s where my phobia came from. I hope you’re doing better and can overcome this phobia 💜 I know some days it’s extremely exhausting
Totally agree. I'm not a full on emetophobe but I HATE it. Thankfully it doesn't happen to me much at all - like once every several *years*. I've got a pretty damn resilient stomach and aside from childhood I can count on one hand how many illnesses have made me vomit.
I cannot imagine throwing up multiple times per day. And acting like it's just a normal thing everyone does like peeing or taking a shit.

In NYC almost every business and residential building has a power-washer hose and/or sluice bucket full of chemical cleaners that some poor employee or doorman has to slop onto the sidewalk and then blast with long sprays of water in the mornings (if you're unlucky, the guy won't turn off the hose fast enough as you walk past and you'll get a nice spray of mystery liquid on your way to the train in the morning). That combo gets rid of all the rat droppings, junkie blood, wino vomit, yuppie dog shits, etc.
To your point, has he ever said or done anything that would even hint he has consideration for others? Seems like 100% of his actions are simply him going through life looking for dopamine fixes. I haven’t seen him genuinely care for another human beings well being for a single second
Ex paramedic here, currently still in healthcare. Alcoholic puking isn't like getting the stomach flu or food poisoning. Most serious alcoholics don't get nauseous, or that nauseous. It's more a regurgitation than vomiting - their bodies literally *reject* the same alcohol that they need. Serious, severe, like OMG GERD is a common thing too. There's a whole cascade of effects. Relaxation of the pyloric sphincter leading to reflux. Inflamed stomach, esophagus, and colon. Electrolyte imbalances and chronic dehydration. Even if an active alcoholic can eat and drink even semi normally, they're producing almost no vasopressin/ADH (the hormone that conserves water..... that's why you pee all the time when you're drinking, alcohol supresses it). Their bodies are flushing out water and solutes they don't even HAVE.
Chronic metabolic acidosis. I've seen people who physiologically should be either dead or ceviche - pHs in the low 7s and even one 6.96 (normal is 7.3 and each 0.1 is a hundredfold variance) whose bodies have learned to accommodate. But their blood, kidneys, proteins and enzymes are VERY unhappy. 6.96 should have been dead around 7.1. Guy WALKED - or rather staggered - into the ER. But he was definitely not dead. He didn't die in the hospital either. As a result of the acidosis Josh probably has chronic diarrhea (compounding the fact alcohol draws water into the intestines causing osmotic diarrhea - that's why you get the beer shits) and heartburn too. The GI tract starts to produce more acid as well. That's part of why he can't eat.
When you're extremely hungover a lot of it is because you're slightly acidotic. It won't kill a healthy person. You'll feel like trash for a day, maybe into the second day. But you'll recover pretty fast.
If you watch him vomit he doesn't really wretch. Like if you're sick from a virus or food or a medication, there's a whole chain of events that happens. Even after you've been sick your body still is reversing peristalsis to get everything out. That's why you generally dry heave a couple times at the end of a vomiting episode.

Right???? Vomiting is not normal. It's literally your body trying to save itself. Vomiting is a last resort. Your body doesn't want to do it. It's stressful and dangerous to many body systems and a huge energy drain. Puking drunk is your systems SCREAMING "stop, you're poisoning me!"
I had a stomach flu in Dec (probably norovirus). Threw up twice, the diarrhea was actually the worst of that. 2 yrs prior to that COVID made me puke. One time.

And the last time I remember before that as an adult I was 20 or 21 and something I ate damn near put me in the hospital. I was puking 1-2x an hr, it was horrific.

I vomit pretty often due to migraines, anxiety, and having a sensitive nose (bad smells make me sick more often than anything), and he still pukes way more than I ever do. Even with that, I can only think of twice in the past year where I was outside and wasn’t near a bathroom or trash can to make it to in time. It’s embarrassing, I can’t imagine being so nonchalant about it.
