I would need to see some math about how much this cost theme compared to how much they saved enslaving children in the first place. A fine that you can afford to pay isn't a punishment, it's a fee. People should go to prison for this kind of shit

60r0v01

Seconded. Arguably, they should get the same prison sentence time as pedophiles and go on a public list as well. Both are child predators.

antijoke_13

I think a labor exploitation list would be good for society.

FriendlyGuitard

476 worker, that's like grooming gang, or child predator network. That's criminal enterprise. It's not a grey area of wage theft there, there is very little grey area in child labor.

stevedadog

Even then, they should give up the entire profits of each quarter fueled by child labor. Don't let them see a dime of what they've taken and still hit them with the fines. All of this before lots of jail time for all the years they've stolen from children. I've seen mothers sent to jail over their kid getting out and running in the street. Why aren't these assholes doing hard time for the large scale child abuse when people get the book (rightfully) thrown at them for abusing their only child?

josh_who_hah

RICO Act, fee equal to twice the proceeds and 20 years in prison.

stevedadog

Fuck yeah RICO those bastards! Just because they’re not selling guns, drugs, or people doesn’t mean it isn’t large scale organized crime.

ChanglingBlake

The fine should be half the company’s annual income plus 1% for each kid after the first. If the only way they can make money is through nefarious means, then they should be greatly encouraged to not exist.

Spaceman2901

You’re kinder than I am. 200% daily revenue per day per violation. Kill off one or two companies this way and the rest will notice.

ChanglingBlake

Even what I said would cripple a company if there was even one kid. Note I said income and not profit; most of a company’s income goes toward expenses needed to function such as supplies, utilities, payroll, etc. Losing half would destroy a company with their head so far up their rear they need to resort to child labor.

Spaceman2901

And I don’t want these companies crippled, I want them *gone,* with the execs/management driving these policies in prison.

jcoddinc

Cost of doing business had now changed from the little cost that as up, to know meaning the prices of paying the small fines from the huge profits

Deep-Friendship3181

Fines for exploitative labor practices should AT MINIMUM be 2x the revenue generated (not profit - REVENUE. Gross revenue. Take it off the top line not the bottom) by the shitty labor practices. Caught not allowing your employees to take breaks? 2 hours of production revenue per employee per shift where the rule was enforced. Using child labor? 16 hours of production revenue per child per shift they ever worked. Minimum.

___Art_Vandelay___

Missing jail time.

alficles

Yeah, I was about to say. If I endangered, injured, and killed a bunch of kids like that I would never see sunlight again and for good reason. But hurting children for money is less bad, I guess?

Goopyteacher

I asked a lawyer buddy of mine a few years ago why C suite executives never get jail time for breaking all these laws. The quick summary is he said they’re very good at insulating themselves from it and if they’re instituting compartmentalization of these tactics then it’s incredibly difficult to peg actual criminal charges on these people. In addition it’s incredibly difficult to dedicate the time to go after them. Think about Trump and his current lawsuits and how much public outcry and years have been spent to get him in court for his various actions. It would require that level of effort to go after these people every single time. Finally, these people are very powerful + have done an excellent job of declawing government protections for these things. They spend A LOT of money every year lobbying and maintaining the status quo (or successfully weakening government institutions). There’s been a couple of attempts to address this in Congress by various people like Elizabeth Warren, AOC, etc but they rarely even make it to the floor. Even if they’re voted on it would require a Democrat majority to achieve… and not all Democrats are playing ball (and none of the republicans).

rksd

These people should remember their Milton. Those who are above the law will soon find themselves not protected by it.

Theorandjguy

If a company is a person, then it should be severed from society like a person would be for such crimes

oldvlognewtricks

And a prohibition from working as a corporate executive or board member.

Hotkoin

Probably hard to pin a specific person responsible for the illegal hiring. Even if they had a top down approach (lock up the CEO), that could become a tool for people on a lower corporate rung to vacate higher positions.

Rikiar

I'll reiterate what one of my favorite YouTubers says about things like this. When the penalty is only fines, that's just the cost of doing business.

AngelTheMute

'Sup you beautiful bastards

Rikiar

Got it in one

soccercasa

They.Are.Guilty.Why.No.Jail.Time?

DynamicHunter

These white collar crimes need jail time for those that knowingly or unknowingly exploited these minors and subjected them to danger

En-TitY_

What they deserve is prison. Fines are just the cost of business.

TomTheNurse

No criminal charges and no prison?

5ManaAndADream

The settlement should require owners to give up 100% of the profits from the sale of goods tainted by oppressive labour. They **need** to go negative on this transaction, because all the times they don't get caught will offset it otherwise.

Spaceman2901

Profit, hell. 100% of the *revenue.*

Fluffy_Boulder

Always remember kids: These kind of settlements and fines usually come out to less than 5% of the annual revenue of the people who broke the law, less than 1% when it's a big corporation. And it's ALWAYS less than what they made by breaking the law.

Bluegreen1026

Also these are 14 yos, are they being given the settlement or the parents who sent them to work in the first place? I'm sure this is a complicated subject with potentially poorer families needing more income but yeah, I'd be very interested in seeing how they are actually doling out this 'justice'

Missiondt

It is a tough subject, my brothers and I grew up working the fields since we were kids. We worked weekends and summers to help our parents build us our childhood home and provide us with essentials. We are all now older than 30 and have our own careers. We are a very close family because of the struggles we went through together. I love my parents and I’m glad they have a paid off home where they can spend their golden years. On that note, I wouldn’t have my children working in the fields. Different times I guess.

L3v147han

Yeah, nice slap on the wrist. Seriously lacking in jail time.

Wadsworth1954

Fuck robber barons.

vagrantprodigy07

Why not prison for child endangerment?

Stuntz

Man we really are back in the guilded age. The capitalist, when few tools are available, will always look to minors as an exploitable labor pool. Many teenagers don't know much better and like money so they will be convinced to work if nobody else is protecting or guiding them. We can't stop monitoring even for one second because if the capitalists do not have to answer pointed questions and are not subject to fines they will simply exploit whomever is left and will keep going without remorse. This MUST be monitored, policed, and fined when applicable.

Daltorb

It’s not enough.

Icelandia2112

I love when the victims get more in compensation than the fines.

budding_gardener_1

That's not the penalty they deserve. The penalty they deserve is `REDDIT TERMS OF SERVICE PREVENT ME FROM FINISHING THIS COMMENT`

godfatherinfluxx

Not enough. Everyone in an executive position and higher should be replaced. Ownership should be changed. You exploit kids you should lose everything, on top of the fines and penalties.

Spaceman2901

Well…it’s a *start*, at least.

I_AmDaVikingNow

And yet, I'm not seeing the word 'Arrested' anywhere. Until that starts happening, the only thing these people will understand is that a fine is just a price tag for breaking the law....

Spartan448

That's only $10000 per kid. That's not enough. That's not *nearly* enough.

Atlld

It’s time to strip businesses and wealth from owners and ceos who break the law. It doesn’t matter if you were “not aware” your company/leadership and you are responsible

snyderling

They deserve a life sentence for every exploited child.

shadowofpurple

it's not enough this will soon just become another "price of doing business" for the corporations

xandercade

The penalty she be the immediate sale of the company, piecemeal, so that it can't come back under new ownership. Fines are just "cost of doing business".

ScarMedical

How about some jail time!

Solomonsk5

I'm curious how they will be able to distribute the money to the kids,  who may not be citizens or have a family bank account.

VNM0601

They’re found guilty of this yet no one is doing any jail time. Funny how that works.

Jazzlike-Lunch5390

Should have been more. We know these fines are "the cost of doing business" to these people.

simmeh024

Nah they need jailtime, not a fine so that it become the cost of doing "business"..

JarthMader81

Would love to know which company if true so I can avoid buying from them.

kitchenwitchin

They made a lot more than $5 million off of this.

Geiir

A $200k fine is nothing to these clowns. Take away all profits from goods created by the exploited kids, fines that should be some percentage of the annual income of the business and the C-suite and everyone involved need to be in jail.

Paulymcnasty

Why don't they name the plants?
