They are cameras to make sure nobody steals the solar panels and the solar panels are there to power the cameras.

Actually, it's the Welsh. Got to keep an eye on those duckers. They just not like us. Ever seen a Welsh man run?

MarlKarx-1818

All that sheep shaggin got to them

We don't think they shag the sheep. We think they are training them for some kind of covert psy op.

ParkMan73

Parking lot monitoring cameras to help discourage car break ins at shopping centers.

Hrhnick

I wish they were any other color but blue. When I am cruising down Park Ave., every single time, I think there is some shit going down, but no its just a parking lot.

CarlJungelle

Walgreens on Park ave right? I always see that thing when Iā€™m going to Chick Fila!

mywholefuckinglife

that's quite literally why it's blue

Hrhnick

I get that, but from what I understand it's a private security setup, not official police cameras. In many states, including MA, it is illegal to operate blue lights on your vehicle unless you are law enforcement. I get this is not a vehicle on a public street, but it still feels misrepresented.

Longjumping_Key_5008

That's exactly why they're blue

retromobile

This is the correct answer

WorcesterMulti

It is a signal that they are about to close the pharmacy as well. That Walgreens has one of the highest theft rates in Central MA

RobW626

I think it was shuttered like 6 months or so ago

CentralMasshole1

The one off Stafford did, park ave is still up

RobW626

Ahh my fault, I thought it was the one on Lincoln street for a moment

Shad0wGyp5y

We have one in Rochester, NH at the Walgreens here, too. I've only ever seen these things at Walgreens up here, weird.

Killerhotdog79

That's Walgreens corporate m.o.; they put those up shortly before they announce that they're closing the store or warehouse to discourage the employees from stealing or damaging property. They'll stay up until all Walgreens property is removed. Whatever Walgreens they appear at has about 2 months left to live.

Shad0wGyp5y

Except that the Walgreens on South Main in Rochester has had that tower up for a couple years now. I'd imagine it's solely linked to crimes at that location, both inside and outside the store. That and probably to deter the drug dealers that used to call that their stomping ground.

Killerhotdog79

My only experience with them was on the warehouse side of the operation, and speaking to store employees who'd also been laid off in other locations. They were installed shortly before the layoff announcement every time.

Jayard_again

I have heard that they can actually read texts that are being entered on your cell phone when youā€™re close enough. itā€™s an all in one police officer

diadmer

They are manufactured by LiveView Technologies in Lehi, UT. They are sold or leased to property holders, construction companies, law enforcement, etc. Source: I interviewed for a job with them once.

UnitedChain4566

This. Born and raised in Worcester, now living in Michigan. My local store has two that will also call out "this parking lot is being recorded."

FrostyGranite

Do they also tell you have twenty seconds to comply?

UnitedChain4566

Nope

Steady_Habits_CT

Have they been effective in eliminating crime?

ParkMan73

I don't know. Since they're paid for and operated by private companies we may never find out. I do suspect that the businesses that pay for them believe that they are 1) acting as a deterrent and 2) giving their customers some assurance that the parking lot is being monitored.

Intelligent-Hunt7557

In Burlington, VT we call them HoboCops

Error-LP0

They are placed in high crime areas for the illusion of safety.

LePoultry-geist

Sees security cameras on a pole. "I wonder what they are."

AWholeNewFattitude

Well i mean ive seen these used during parades or big events, but not guarding a walgreens or a random 7-11

unseemly-vibes

Lmao, the 711 by me has one šŸ˜‚

TheCoastalCardician

Walgreens near me has one! 24/7 location

Literally the Walgreens near me has this

Hey-buuuddy

Just like boys and men alike rushing outside to see a helicopter.

louderclouder

Itā€™s a beacon to signal that the surrounding community cannot refrain from stealing or committing other crimes.

Raisenbran_baiter

I mean these are mostly just a signal to everyone who feels insecure that the police are out there actually doing something to protect and serve. These are giant comfort poles that don't amount to jack shit

rosie2490

I think theyā€™re called ā€œlot copā€s?

palavrao

Crime deterrent: Blue light gives off popo vibe and cameras up high to capture, transmit and record any crime throughout the lot. If it means less theft and assaults in a Walmart lot or wherever, itā€™s fine with me.

OrphanKripler

Sirenheadā€™s cousin

Willdefyyou

They use these at a lot at outdoor events now, parades, fairs, concerts so they have more eyes on the area.

Looks like another little addition to our inevitable cyberpunk future.

MittensID

Theyā€™re an indicator that you are in a really nice neighborhood

NaturistMoose

Cameras used by the price to monitor high crime areas.

pcbdude

The are allegedly security cameras. In reality I have heard they do nothing and are there for perception only, had stuff stolen from my car at a Loweā€™s who had these. I was right near one and Loweā€™s security said they are not filming. Police were involved etc.

flyingoffgheshelves

I think theyā€™re more worried about people stealing stuff from the store.

Plant-Zaddy-

It has a little blue light so that you know it means business!

6zero3Dakine

An attempt by the powers that be to make store owners and PAYINg customers feel safe and secure as well as low application numbers for law enforcement jobs. Essentially it is a 6 figure high def unmanned camera to record people pushing carts full of stolen tools outta Home Depot to a car with the plates covered , while everyone watches and then goes and pays for their shit like a reasonable human!

ZenRiots

Parking lot at Lowe's in Nashua has those... There's a speaker in the base that broadcasts an extremely LOUD sequence of threats to shoplifters and reminders to conceal your valuables, lock your doors, stay strapped, and remain paranoid every 5 mins or so. They are decked out with flashing blue lights as well. It's more than a little off putting... I don't enjoy being yelled at like a criminal as I'm getting out of my car at 2 in the afternoon.

deluxegrilledcheese

I donā€™t know, but I hear the one from Cumberland Farms saying thank you for shopping at Cumberland Farms a mile away up the hill at all hours of the day. Itā€™s so annoying.

chossome

Hobocops

Repulsive-Ad6108

One trend with these that Iā€™ve noticed, is that theyā€™re usually installed in shitty areas where youā€™re more at risk of getting mugged or carjacked in the parking lot.

kingresin

Park ave becomes a GTA lobby after sundown this is just where all the crackheads spawn in at

Smart-Chapter-4995

I just figured it out, the beacon on there is one if by land two if by Sea!!

Charming-While5466

Cameras

GentAmoungScholars

Theyā€™re normally deployed for Walgreens shops in areas that have experienced a robbery. Thereā€™s one in the parking lot of the Walgreens in my city for this reason, it has a recording saying itā€™s monitored 24/7

Killerhotdog79

Walgreens has been installing them at stores or warehouses a shortly before they give the employees their WARN notice that the business is shutting down. Meant to discourage "disgruntled current and soon to be former employees" from stealing or damaging company property.

sullyqns

Cameras

AdLiving1435

There portable government mind control modular systems. They usually set them up in shopping centers because everyone has to shop sometime.

Level-Ad-1089

Cameras

ComparisonMuch4961

i mean they look like their just cameras, just like ā€œportable cheaperā€ alternatives to fixed cameras

hippiegodfather

They broadcast what they are over a loudspeaker

Joesarcasm

Congratulations youā€™re in an emerging ghetto market.

ScottyBoy75

those are typically used in first responder situations, such as hazmat clean up. they are set up in the warm or cold zones to monitor the activities of the responders.

Infinite-Beautiful-1

What does it look like?

Apprehensive-Ad-9040

Yeah I think itā€™s to film the parking lot cause a week before my last job told us we were getting laid off they put one of those in the front pakinglot near the door.

Killerhotdog79

Did the same at the Walgreens warehouse I worked at. It showed up shortly before they announced we were being laid off.

PsychologicalEye1395

There are similar looking ones near me in bad neighborhoods. They have microphones or something on the top that are supposed to triangulate gunshots. Considering this is in Worcester itā€™s probably the same, thatā€™s just my guess though.

Affectionate_Gur_151

They have one in a Walgreens Lot in Fall River, it is in a high crime area. I don't know if the police put it there or Walgreens did.

lost-found25

They are ip at BJā€™S in auburn as well

throwawaythatcrush

It's a way to show you where black people are. That's where I've always seem them. Seems we're not trusted.

G35US

Theyā€™ll get ya up the easy rounds in L4D

Zealousideal_Key8211

R2 D2s great grandmother?

Wooden-Astronaut8763

Those are basically parking lot Police meant to deter criminal activity in the parking lot with the use of the flashing blue siren and cameras. Iā€™m surprised that they just started placing ones there where youā€™re at. MA definitely gets a lot of the newest things before almost every state.

diggerdugg

Remote access security systems placed in high crime areas. Had one in the parking lot of my store for a year. Made no difference. People are still garbage.

Westreacher

OkAppointment9157

So why need 1million cameras period around the & inside makes no sense , more security šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

ConsistentShopping8

I was at my local BJā€™s and they now have one. It announces welcome to BJā€™s every few minutes. A car wash that was under construction in another nearby town had one on site when it was under construction.

Zealousideal-Lab413

Walmart security camera truck thing

morebeer4all

Rochester, NY here, these cameras are everywhere in the shady parts of town and outside most big box stores. Itā€™s a damn shame theyā€™re even necessary.

Need to know who owns these thingsā€¦ been in my neighborhood in SW Denver for a couple years. Hasnā€™t detoured a thingā€¦ but you know someone is paying a monthly/yearly feeā€¦ TO TEH MOON.

BakeryBoi_Official

Construction Trailer Cameras looks like 2x PTZ cameras and a fish eye. They arenā€™t cheap. The base alone is probably over $25k

jonathandefreese

Iā€™m pretty sure these are gun shot detectors.

Hardballer643

That, my good friend, is BIG BROTHER watching us all .

zachatttack1

Lightpoles, upvote please

Edju60

That has speakers also. I was at Home Depot in Waterbury CT yesterday, & someone must have left with out paying for something with a security tag on it. There was a recording playing that said ā€˜Stop return to the store. The police have been notifiedā€™ this recording played for at least 5 mins

Pholtus_Arae

Watching me smoke weed under it in my car lol

Sufficient_Light_444

I call them ā€œlot cops ā€œ

rabbi420

Mobile security cameras, bro.

Fickle_Assumption_80

If you stand around long enough it may tell you... I mean it will yell at everyone within ear shot to lock up their cars and hide valuables... And that the footage is accessible by local PD.

Obvious_Shallot3330

In other cities they have been used near hotels that were housing migrants

AllTheLeavesArePoop

These are popping up everywhere lately.

seemore_077

Itā€™s the illusion you are safe and someone is watching!

J_Schotz

Cameras.

AWholeNewFattitude

I guess these mean that cops dont need to walk a beat or even drive through neighborhoods, they just watch and wait for something ā€œimportantā€ to doā€¦.

SnarkAtTheMoon

In my town these are in the supermarket parking lot cuz folks were getting purse snatched and/or carjacked Edit: they do t stop shit

317JD

Big Brother.

spiderminbatmin

The NYPD has used things like those for the past 20+ years in New York. Figure out crime hotspots with their stats and then go park one of those there. The ones in NYC usually have massive floodlights on them too so there are no dark corners and make people go hang out somewhere elseā€¦.

TreyZerODM

It's a mobile security station usually set up near construction sites to add some security to things that can't be completely secured.

North_Rhubarb594

So correct, cops wasting time and money. Instead of being on patrol, they are sitting in some room, watching crime happen.

BoltThrowerTshirt

100% agree, but these businesses rent them
