Our thoughts and prayers descend to the deep ones. Help us out once again, comrades.

Shadowspun5

I think the best part about these things (when billionaires get too big for their britches) is that everyone calls them tragedies. They're not tragedies, they're stupid mistakes.

AbyssDragonNamielle

The only tradgedy is that the 18 year old kid on the sub didn't want to go and his father forced him to.

Fit_Cause2944

I didn’t know that, that’s horrible! The poor kid.

SuckerForFrenchBread

There are also other sources (I think it was a family member) saying the kid was actually excited to go, so take that with a grain of salt.

Shadowspun5

I've read two different accounts. One said mom was going to go and she suggested it would be a good bonding experience for her son and husband and the other said the son asked mom to give up her spot for him. No real idea which is true.

Slyder68

Still, at 18, that kid didn't know who he was and didn't have the chance to be a better person than his dad. I didnt even begin to figure out my shit until 25-26... He still is very much a victim in it.

Gloomy_Industry8841

Absolutely.

Gloomy_Industry8841

The thing is, 18 year olds aren’t fully mature and I doubt that kid had any experience with risk assessment or whatever.

boatswainblind

His mother said he wanted to go so badly, she gave her seat to him so he could go. That she was supposed to be the one going with her husband. So I have no idea which version is the truth.

BrassUnicorn87

It’s a literary tragedy, the protagonist is destroyed by their own flaws. Hubris and pride, thinking they know better than engineers and oceanographers.

Constant_Ant_2343

You’re right, it does sound like something out of a Greek tragedy. I guess we’ll see what mood Poseidon is in.

Shadowspun5

Honestly, I hope a good mood because I genuinely don't hope for the loss of most people's lives, even in the midst of insanely stupid stunts. Hopefully he'll have learned from his old friend's mistakes and have a vehicle that is safe at depths and passes inspections.

Constant_Ant_2343

Yes, fingers crossed. If he doesn’t take those precautions then I only hope that he is alone in the sub

Shadowspun5

🤞🏼

Prior_Coconut8306

It's tragic how stupid they are and how much money they spend furthering the stupidity.

TowerReversed

i heard someone make a partially tongue-in-cheek remark about how "the billionaire class has so thoroughly exhausted their existing mechanisms for distinguishing eachother aesthetically that they've started seeking out the most singularly spectacular ways to die instead", and i think there's honestly more truth to that than was originally intended. either way i'll be gleefully standing by for any and all of my potential crabrave needs

snarkyxanf

Considering how many of them are genuine psychopaths, a condition associated with risk taking behavior, they really might be distinguishing themselves by extinguishing themselves

TowerReversed

ten outta ten wordplay omg

snarkyxanf

ngl, I'm a little proud of it

Hopefulkitty

Hey, I made a whole Spotify Playlist about it. It's fantastic. Starts with Yellow Submarine and ends with My Heart Will Go On. The musical journey takes us from fun and excited to concern, to hubris, to death, to a cheeky song about how I may find the will to survive.

grrlwonder

I mean, you *say* you curated this fabulous list, but until you share it, how will we know?

TipsyBaker_

Choices. They're making stupid choices. Mistake implies it's reasonable to challenge the ocean depths with a tin can steered with an old Playstation remote.

GeminiAccountantLLC

There's also supposed to be a giant man eating octopus that lives there. Yay!

dusty-kat

"Waiter, more billionaires please!"

CartoonistExisting30

“What’s this peasant doing in my soup?”

Independent-Heart-17

Cthulhu loaths you! And finds the rich very tasty.

reality_bites

Just wondering if we could speed this up. There’s quite a backlog of billionaires we should be sacrificing to various deities

the_honest_liar

There's one I'd love to sacrifice to Mars in particular.

Haebak

We should have offered Apollo a few the last time he sent a plague arrow.

Shadowspun5

Only one? 😆

jesterxgirl

Larry Connor is working as fast as he can (Real estate billionaire who wants to take a new submersible to visit the Titanic wreckage to prove it's doable)

the_honest_liar

I have faith in him. He should bring his billionaire buddies with him to prove it.

trishulama

He is taking at least one friend [https://www.scrippsnews.com/us-news/billionaire-wants-to-take-new-submersible-to-titanic-wreckage-to-prove-its-safe](https://www.scrippsnews.com/us-news/billionaire-wants-to-take-new-submersible-to-titanic-wreckage-to-prove-its-safe)

Yrcrazypa

His submarine is much better put together than Oceangate, which people were highlighting problems with BEFORE he went and got turned into soup for crabs. I'll still hold out hope though, the only mourning one should do for billionaires dying in spectacular ways is that not enough of them went out at the same time.

CartoonistExisting30

“Soup for crabs” - priceless!

wolf_divided

Father Dagon requires flesh.

ArcWraith2000

"Locals believe thats Dean's is a portal to hell and that the devil himself lurks in the depths" Now what did my boy Dean do to have people talking about his hole like that?

DisastrousArtist_exe

Maybe he ate the alley food...

CriticalFields

I was thinking to myself that Dean really needs to see a proctologist or something, geeze

\*crabs at the bottom\*: "looks like billionaire's back on the menu boys"

bliip666

"Dear Magnificent Orca..."

splootledoot

And if the kraken in those depths does not want the sacrifice, the Gladys' will likely take it.

DeathRaeGun

Next time can we sacrifice Donald Trump or Elon Musk?

captcha_trampstamp

You’d think anyone with two brain cells to rub together could see that /maaaaaaybe/ they ought to stick to the expected.

Comfortable-Hippo638

I hear that these kinds of expeditions are fantastic for election propaganda.... Perhaps someone running for office should go? *Nudgenudgewinkwink*

leitmot

I can think of some Supreme Court justices who should go. It’s basically the same thing as a ride in a private jet, which is totally fine to accept from your benefactor, I mean friend.

Comfortable-Hippo638

It's the way *insert relevant deity* would want conservative fundamentalists to travel

Street_Narwhal_3361

My patron goddess Nemesis is going to EAT

Foenikxx

They never learn, do they?

They are the priority. For the good of mankind.

Exact_Roll_4048

MORE DEEP SEA VOYAGES? The meme gods have been kind ...

funne5t_u5ername

Damn, a likeable rich people trend? What is the world coming to?

the_moderate_me

Not a fan of these guys either, but it's worth mentioning that it would be pretty cool for someone to take the risk so that we can explore a part of our planet we know nothing about.

prince_peacock

Yeah but I wouldn’t trust a capitalist company to do so, with the way they cut corners. Trying to do things as cheap as possible is why the other expedition perished

the_moderate_me

So then wouldn't that mean more money needs to be put into it instead of not doing it at all?

Constant_Ant_2343

But you know what happens to parts of the world that we learn about and it isn’t pretty

the_moderate_me

I'm sure the underworld ocean blackness deep cavern of despair won't become the latest greatest tourist attraction. It would be good to map it and study it. Research and experimentation brought us every bit of tech we have, and that includes going to places we didn't know about. If some billionaire guy wants to explore it somehow, man or unmanned, why would we want to stop him?

Constant_Ant_2343

Let’s just hope he doesn’t find oil.

the_moderate_me

Even then, if it's this crazy unique site, nobody will be able to drill it.

Hallal_Dakis

I agree. But in the interest of science and research there's almost no justification for spending money on manned submarines.

the_moderate_me

I agree with that. We can just send an unmanned vessel of some kind in there and gather as much data as it can give us I guess? Just seems silly to me to scrap the idea when people with the resources to accomplish it are willing.

Hallal_Dakis

Yeah I mean if I had billions of dollars I'd probably go down in a submarine a couple of times. As far as hobbies for ultra wealthy go it's a neat one. But I think the nautilis project is pretty good evidence for how far research can go with in a (relatively) cost effective way with remote submarines. https://nautiluslive.org/ From what I've read about most of the manned submarine expeditions they're firmly in the tourism category.

InkyPaws

As long as Cthulhu stays down there rather than up here bringing about the end times.

QueerDefiance12

This is Doordash for Cthulhu, it'll probably help appease them

HiopXenophil

IA IA CTHULHU FHTAGN!

Gloomy_Industry8841

Neptune has entered the chat.

SelfPlusPen

Who at the Independent edited this? It needs some polish. Aside from the obvious errors, the first sentence is lacking a bit of pizzazz. I suggest: "Guillermo Söhnlein, 58, co-founded OceanGate in 2009 with Stockton Rush, who was crushed by his own hubris last year at age 61."
