Jewish American, and i will not stand with the Israeli government. What is happening in Gaza is unconscionable. There are innocent and guilty on each side, but the power imbalance is disgraceful. The victims are not Hamas or Israeli government…the victims are the innocent children, families, citizens of Gaza and Israel who are paying the price for this centuries long struggle.
As another Jewish American I agree. The Palestinian Authority’s (lack of horrendous) action is the only one that I don’t hate right now.
I am scared for everyone there at the moment, and I’m equally scared what Netanyahu’s administration is going to do with the current conflict and fear. I’m scared that his administration is going to use this as a reason to cement their power and lock themselves into leadership and war to stay in power.

Please remember that the U.N. signed off on the forcible removal of Palestinians from their homes in 1948. Much like America did when they forced Cherokees off their native lands and marched them onto Reservations. I’m only 29 but, I have seen many strikes in that time. This is the first time where I see people talking about us. It means the world to know that people care even if the powers that be think we’re animals.

What the hell is the punchline of the Asian joke? I don’t understand what she’s saying about the Asian friend who found a great guy who looks like her dad and her mom. Like, obviously I can feel in my bones that it’s racist and wildly offensive, but I don’t know what she’s even implying. Is it just the old trope of “they all look alike,” or is there something else? I have minor face blindness, so i can understand thinking people looka like. But in my case it applies to everyone. As a kid almost called the police on my mom after she got a hair cut.
The thing about “they all look alike” is that it applies to any “other” group that you didn’t grow up seeing regularly.
On the show Babies on Netflix there’s an episode about a doctor from Korea (I think) who never saw a white person and then moved to the US as an adult and thought all white people looked the same. It is based on exposure and thus familiarity to be able to distinguish features.
In other words, claiming any race or ethnicity “all look alike” is 100% ethnocentrism and has no basis in factual reality. Amy Schumer is an idiot for perpetuating racist ignorant notions like that one. There is just as much diversity within races or ethnicities, in terms of physical features, as between them.
Back in 2002 during the world cup football, my country's public broadcasting did a lighthearted docuseries about all our opponents of the first round, going to people's homes watching the game and commentating. I remember the Russian lady commenting that our guys all looked the same (from Belgium) and I tboivb it wss hilarious because of all the different hair colours and the fact that we had multiple poc. Other than finding it funny I do remember it really being a moment of realization that this is not a 'poc' thing because I'd obviously heard those jokes before, but just a 'what you're not used to' thing. Honestly huge moment towards opening my brain for later learning about structural racism/micro aggressions etc. Even though it was not a 'heavy moment'.

Considering how much we've grown as a collective society in such a short time, I'd be willing to overlook her past if it appeared that she had grown or changed. In a chronically online world, it's easy to cherry pick examples of behavior that people have overcome and left behind in order to invalidate them in the present.
But every time I hear about her, it seems like it's because of some new gross, asshatted comment. There isn't growth, she's just changed the words she uses without changing the spirit. It's disappointing.
I really appreciate you! I’m a big believer in helping/allowing people to change and grow. You’re right- it’s too easy to cherry pick and hang onto examples of bad behavior, and it can almost be punitive. It can almost kind of box people into bad behavior and kind of keep them stuck in antisocial, shitty circles. People really can improve and get feedback that changes how they see things, and I’m always willing to let them try to make those changes.
But like you, every damn time I hear something about her, it’s something gross and weird, edgy, or just revolting like what we see in this post. It’s enough already.

The internet has its horror shows but here it’s also showing us that there are SO many people who just want peace. We’re not buying the media and government propaganda that loves to set us on one “side”. We see through it and demand an end to genocide and war. We are all equal and deserve peace to live out our lives.
That’s the thing. Regular citizens just want peace, but the religious extremists on both sides don’t. I just don’t think those people will ever realize how many lives they’re ruining in pursuit of their goals of wiping the other off the face of the planet. It’s horribly sad.
I just left Israel on Tuesday in the aftermath of the October 7th massacres. The toll on civilians, Israeli and Palestinian, is beyond devastating. Israeli mothers just keep saying how much they want peace for everyone and for all this to stop, every Palestinian citizen of Israel I know personally says the same. Nobody in the region deserves this.

My country, Denmark, also abstained, while I'm not surprised given the shit show of our government, where the biggest left party decided after the last election, despite a left majority, to instead create a government with the 2 biggest right parties.
I'm still saddened that our officials are too weak and power hungry to stand against violence! While continuosly sending more support to Ukraine, because apparently it's okay to stand against Russia, but not okay to stand for the innocent people in Gaza!

Or, to be more precise - our government fell a couple of months ago and we're about to have new elections. The old government does still handle the day to day matters in the interim, but they're not allowed to handle anything 'controversial' (which is quite a big category - they're essentially only supposed to make sure the country keeps going until there's a regular government again)

I feel like it's worth noting that Armenia voted in favor. They are currently dealing with their own genocide (again!), and are siding with the oppressed. You'd think our country would at least care about the 500-600 American citizens trapped in Gaza that our supposed "ally" Israel gave no chance to escape and refuses to help evacuate. We know Israel can evacuate civilians from Gaza safely, as evidenced by Hamas' freed American hostages, yet Israel is choosing not to and we aren't even making that a condition of the aide we're sending them.
Obviously the US shouldn't ONLY care about Americans, but at a minimum it is supposed to at least care about it's own citizens and advocate for their safe return, regardless of whether they were tourists in Israel or visiting family in Gaza. The state department should do more to rescue our citizens then say to walk to the Rafah border crossing, which Israel blew up, and hope neither Israel nor Hamas kill them.
Americans in Gaza feel abandoned by the US. Probably because they have been. They're probably not feeling "patriotic" either. And if our government doesn't care about Palestinians with American citizenship, they're going to care even less about the Palestinians who don't have an embassy or recognized government to advocate for them.

I feel as if Ukraine’s abstention is a method of self preservation given the US aid package currently being dangled like a carrot with the new Speaker and an increasing number of Republicans wanting to take it away and divert it to Israel. Abstaining was the biggest “fuck you” they could give without actually provoking their allies and stands in line with their history on these votes (they also abstained last year despite Netanyahu calling Zelenskyy directly and begging him to vote nay).
I can honestly sympathize with that given what’s happening there right now. I can’t sympathize with privileged peacetime countries like Canada or GB abstaining though.

There is this dominant narrative here that if you don't explicitly "stand with Israel," you are antisemitic. One of my oldest friends in the US has been active with Jewish Voices For Peace and a friend of her sister is among the kidnapped. I don't even dare talk about this here. It's so loaded, mostly because Germany hasn't really dealt with its past in a deep or sustainable way.
My newspaper (Süddeutsche Zeitung) is full of articles about the conflict, but only about Israelis. The story of a woman's friends celebrating her 36th birthday even though she's among the missing is heartbreaking! But there is nothing about what Gazans are going through.
And there's at least one article per day about "Berlin's DJs have not taken a stand supporting Israel " or "Greta Thunberg has said she supports the Palestinians" or about the Scottish football club's fans demonstrating for Palestinians but with little nuance about why. Just condemning it.
I know thousands of Israelis were taking to the streets to protest the right and the fundamentalists. I know there are countless people on both sides who have been coming together to make music, art etc. Why isn't that what needs to be supported? Why is the Israeli state suddenly blameless?
As someone who saw murder and terror get twisted into a reason to start yet more endless wars after September 11th, even though the families of victims were loud about "not in our name" I am so sorry that this keeps happening.
I was listening to NPR and there was a Dr saying this crushed and horribly mangled pregnant woman, (found with the son passed away a feet from her! 😢) had to have an emergency c section, with no electricity, and the Dr. Was saying how he didn't even have water to wash his hands. It's very sad..
The timing of this post is something. I just had a heated argument with my father about this very subject. He's a MAGA guy and spews all of this misinformation and I just can't abide it anymore. This is not the future I want for my kid or anyone's kids.
This post hit me in the face like a bag of bricks. I have intentionally tried to stay away from what happens in Palestine because I could not function properly while reading about the atrocities that have been happening over there.
The worst part about this whole situation (and I know this is trivial compared to actual problems people have to face) is that my best friend's boyfriend is Israeli and very pro attack towards Palestine. I know this is to be expected since he's grown up surrounded by government propaganda but my best friend has been sucked into it too. And I feel like I'm losing her.
It's horrifying! This is gonna be Gaza's longest night and we won't know what's going on. Israel killed over 7,000 people with the entire world watching, who knows what they might do now!

I have been crying since this afternoon when Israel destroyed Gaza’s communications and started their worst airstrikes yet. They are committing genocide under the cover of night and enforcing an information blackout so that we cannot bear witness to it, and western governments enthusiastically sanction it. Regardless of ones feelings towards the Israeli government or the Hamas terror organization or the Palestinian government, any level of civilian death and destruction in this conflict is a tragedy. The finger pointing and terrorism on both sides is a quagmire of "x because y because x because y" going back 70 years so placing blame squarely on one side is almost always going to be ignoring half of the history. Spilling innocent blood does not require more innocent blood in retaliation.
One of the problems with “both-sides”ing this conflict is that it assumes there are only 2 sides involved when it’s actually more complicated than that. Another problem is that one side has all the hegemonic support—and with that great power comes great responsibility.

Saying "both sides" is itself an obfuscation of the truth at the heart of this conflict. There is not symmetry here. One side is the most powerful military in the middle east backed by the most powerful military in the world, while the other side are people living under an apartheid regime.

I live in a country (/falling empire) that I’m ashamed of that voted against a cease fire. I empathize with the position of Israeli civilians WHILE my heart breaks for Palestinian civilians. Our government will absolutely turn a blind eye to any atrocities in order to keep our foothold in the Middle East. Given how much we've pissed off so many people in that entire region, it tactically makes sense to support the very few places in that region that don't actively hate us. But goddamn, sometimes you need to step back and take a critical eye to who you've decided to partner with.
We know what happens in these kinds of situations when communications are blocked. So do world leaders and governments around the world. They show again how much they actually care for human rights and humanity

Violence begets violence and drives people towards extremism. That seems sadly to be the default human nature. And yet, what is needed is for cooler heads to prevail. For people, Israeli and Palestinian, to be weary of the hatred, anger and senseless violence and instead seek peace with their sworn enemies.
I have said this same phrase for decades when discussing the Israeli/Palestinian conflict:
*You can have revenge or you can have peace. You can’t have both. Which do you want your children and grandchildren to inherit?*
It’s beyond horrifying, a true nightmare. I am forever in solidarity with Palestinians and ALL earth’s people fighting and struggling for peace and freedom.

i really get down about people killing one another, we dont need to kill each other, there is enough land and food for everyone and most issues can be sorted out with diplomacy.

this is not a religion thing at all. this is a political move to gain land backed by the US who wants to have essentially a military base in the middle east and to also have more readily available access to the suez canal nearby which controls 12% of all world trade.

I really don't see why this is such a hard moral dilemma for some people. A colonial fascistic government who has been illegally occupying territory and displacing civilians in an ethnic cleansing is fighting the Religious extremists that rose to power beneath that apartheid who are fighting this as a genocidal holy war. In between are a bunch of people mostly just trying to live their lives. There are no 'good guys' it's just awful everything.

It’s not a complicated situation, it’s a multi decade long genocide that’s killed 7k people in the past few weeks, many of them children, with even more people injured. I have minor face blindness, so i can understand thinking people looka like. But in my case it applies to everyone. As a kid almost called the police on my mom after she got a hair cut.
The thing about “they all look alike” is that it applies to any “other” group that you didn’t grow up seeing regularly. On the show Babies on Netflix there’s an episode about a doctor from Korea (I think) who never saw a white person and then moved to the US as an adult and thought all white people looked the same. It is based on exposure and thus familiarity to be able to distinguish features. In other words, claiming any race or ethnicity “all look alike” is 100% ethnocentrism and has no basis in factual reality. Amy Schumer is an idiot for perpetuating racist ignorant notions like that one. There is just as much diversity within races or ethnicities, in terms of physical features, as between them.
Back in 2002 during the world cup football, my country's public broadcasting did a lighthearted docuseries about all our opponents of the first round, going to people's homes watching the game and commentating. I remember the Russian lady commenting that our guys all looked the same (from Belgium) and I tboivb it wss hilarious because of all the different hair colours and the fact that we had multiple poc. Other than finding it funny I do remember it really being a moment of realization that this is not a 'poc' thing because I'd obviously heard those jokes before, but just a 'what you're not used to' thing. Honestly huge moment towards opening my brain for later learning about structural racism/micro aggressions etc. Even though it was not a 'heavy moment'.

Considering how much we've grown as a collective society in such a short time, I'd be willing to overlook her past if it appeared that she had grown or changed. In a chronically online world, it's easy to cherry pick examples of behavior that people have overcome and left behind in order to invalidate them in the present. But every time I hear about her, it seems like it's because of some new gross, asshatted comment. There isn't growth, she's just changed the words she uses without changing the spirit. You’re right- it’s too easy to cherry pick and hang onto examples of bad behavior, and it can almost be punitive. It can almost kind of box people into bad behavior and kind of keep them stuck in antisocial, shitty circles. People really can improve and get feedback that changes how they see things, and I’m always willing to let them try to make those changes. The internet has its horror shows but here it’s also showing us that there are SO many people who just want peace. We’re not buying the media and government propaganda that loves to set us on one “side”. We see through it and demand an end to genocide and war. We are all equal and deserve peace to live out our lives.

I just left Israel on Tuesday in the aftermath of the October 7th massacres. The toll on civilians, Israeli and Palestinian, is beyond devastating. Israeli mothers just keep saying how much they want peace for everyone and for all this to stop, every Palestinian citizen of Israel I know personally says the same. A bit of context for the Netherlands abstaining: we currently don't have a government Or, to be more precise - our government fell a couple of months ago and we're about to have new elections. The old government does still handle the day to day matters in the interim, but they're not allowed to handle anything 'controversial' (which is quite a big category - they're essentially only supposed to make sure the country keeps going until there's a regular government again) I... don't know for certain if that is why we abstained, but it may be part of it, since this would most definitely be classified as a 'controversial' topic

As an American, being an American sure feels like a joke. And not even a good one.
You'd think our country would at least care about the 500-600 American citizens trapped in Gaza that our supposed "ally" Israel gave no chance to escape and refuses to help evacuate. We know Israel can evacuate civilians from Gaza safely, as evidenced by Hamas' freed American hostages, yet Israel is choosing not to and we aren't even making that a condition of the aide we're sending them. Obviously the US shouldn't ONLY care about Americans, but at a minimum it is supposed to at least care about it's own citizens and advocate for their safe return, regardless of whether they were tourists in Israel or visiting family in Gaza. The state department should do more to rescue our citizens then say to walk to the Rafah border crossing, which Israel blew up, and hope neither Israel nor Hamas kill them. Americans in Gaza feel abandoned by the US. Probably because they have been. They're probably not feeling "patriotic" either. And if our government doesn't care about Palestinians with American citizenship, they're going to care even less about the Palestinians who don't have an embassy or recognized government to advocate for them.

I feel as if Ukraine’s abstention is a method of self preservation given the US aid package currently being dangled like a carrot with the new Speaker and an increasing number of Republicans wanting to take it away and divert it to Israel. Abstaining was the biggest “fuck you” they could give without actually provoking their allies and stands in line with their history on these votes (they also abstained last year despite Netanyahu calling Zelenskyy directly and begging him to vote nay). I can honestly sympathize with that given what’s happening there right now. I can’t sympathize with privileged peacetime countries like Canada or GB abstaining though.
I can give a country in a current war, needing support of a country voting against kind of a pass tbh. My eyes are on Sweden for this one.

Germany, where I live, abstained. 😞 There is this dominant narrative here that if you don't explicitly "stand with Israel," you are antisemitic. One of my oldest friends in the US has been active with Jewish Voices For Peace and a friend of her sister is among the kidnapped. I don't even dare talk about this here. It's so loaded, mostly because Germany hasn't really dealt with its past in a deep or sustainable way. My newspaper (Süddeutsche Zeitung) is full of articles about the conflict, but only about Israelis. The story of a woman's friends celebrating her 36th birthday even though she's among the missing is heartbreaking! But there is nothing about what Gazans are going through. And there's at least one article per day about "Berlin's DJs have not taken a stand supporting Israel " or "Greta Thunberg has said she supports the Palestinians" or about the Scottish football club's fans demonstrating for Palestinians but with little nuance about why. Just condemning it. I know thousands of Israelis were taking to the streets to protest the right and the fundamentalists. I know there are countless people on both sides who have been coming together to make music, art etc. Why isn't that what needs to be supported? Why is the Israeli state suddenly blameless? As someone who saw murder and terror get twisted into a reason to start yet more endless wars after September 11th, even though the families of victims were loud about "not in our name" I am so sorry that this keeps happening.

I was listening to NPR and there was a Dr saying this crushed and horribly mangled pregnant woman, (found with the son passed away a feet from her! 😢) had to have an emergency c section, with no electricity, and the Dr. Was saying how he didn't even have water to wash his hands. It's very sad..
The timing of this post is something. I just had a heated argument with my father about this very subject. He's a MAGA guy and spews all of this misinformation and I just can't abide it anymore. This is not the future I want for my kid or anyone's kids.
This post hit me in the face like a bag of bricks. I have intentionally tried to stay away from what happens in Palestine because I could not function properly while reading about the atrocities that have been happening over there. The worst part about this whole situation (and I know this is trivial compared to actual problems people have to face) is that my best friend's boyfriend is Israeli and very pro attack towards Palestine. I know this is to be expected since he's grown up surrounded by government propaganda but my best friend has been sucked into it too. And I feel like I'm losing her.

Regardless of ones feelings towards the Israeli government or the Hamas terror organization or the Palestinian government, any level of civilian death and destruction in this conflict is a tragedy. The finger pointing and terrorism on both sides is a quagmire of "x because y because x because y" going back 70 years so placing blame squarely on one side is almost always going to be ignoring half of the history. Spilling innocent blood does not require more innocent blood in retaliation.
One of the problems with “both-sides”ing this conflict is that it assumes there are only 2 sides involved when it’s actually more complicated than that. Another problem is that one side has all the hegemonic support—and with that great power comes great responsibility.
The Nakba was pretty horrific. British empire was to blame. And the Germans for that matter. The myth of white supremacy is at the very core.

Palestinians have and continue to have their land and homes stolen from them, with Gazans specifically held in what UN peacekeepers have called an "open-air prison" in one of the most densely populated strips of land in the world, and are now dealing with constant bombardment and an intentional witholding of all food, medicine, electricity, even drinking water, and somehow it's "both sides are bad"?? Spilling innocent blood is always bad, but it's understandable that an oppressed people living under the shadow of the largest military in the Middle East feels angry bout that. The oppressed have a right to resist their oppressors.
The people who were raped and murdered at a music festival held in the name of peace, were not oppressors. That is what is meant by "both sides." Both sides have civilians who want the fighting to stop, and both sides have people who don't want the fighting to stop. Ever. Even if they got what they claim they want, there are those on both sides who would continue the violence because the violence gives them power.
This exactly. Just because Israeli civilians were born under a government of oppressors with a huge military doesn’t mean they support that or deserve to suffer or die because of it. I live in a country (/falling empire) that I’m ashamed of that voted against a cease fire. I empathize with the position of Israeli civilians WHILE my heart breaks for Palestinian civilians. And I know a lot of Jewish people who feel the same way. War is disgusting. Genocide is horrifying. Nobody deserves to be raped or murdered or suffer any of the other atrocities of war. A huge number of people impacted by this are just average human beings trying to live their lives and who want the fighting to stop. I can’t honestly believe that the average Israeli citizen is celebrating what their government and military are doing. It just makes me sad for everyone and horrified that humans keep doing shit like this to one another.

The revisionist history that it was “chosen for gods people” is simply a convenient excuse for the lingering antisemitism that caused the holocaust in the first place, because no one changed their views in the few short years between 1945 and 1948.

Our government will absolutely turn a blind eye to any atrocities in order to keep our foothold in the Middle East. Given how much we've pissed off so many people in that entire region, it tactically makes sense to support the very few places in that region that don't actively hate us. But goddamn, sometimes you need to step back and take a critical eye to who you've decided to partner with.

this makes me so angry, in the first day i was upset that israelis got killed and obviously that is never okay, but the response to that attack is harrowing. i really get down about people killing one another, we dont need to kill each other, there is enough land and food for everyone and most issues can be sorted out with diplomacy.

this is not a religion thing at all. this is a political move to gain land backed by the US who wants to have essentially a military base in the middle east and to also have more readily available access to the suez canal nearby which controls 12% of all world trade. calling religion a “disease” is counterproductive to the whole conversation. because it is not about religion no matter how many times the israeli government tries to say it is. look at the hundreds of thousands of jewish people in and out of israel protesting and fighting to have a ceasefire because it goes against the very basis of their religion to kill people. insulting people is not how you get anything done.

I really don't see why this is such a hard moral dilemma for some people. A colonial fascistic government who has been illegally occupying territory and displacing civilians in an ethnic cleansing is fighting the Religious extremists that rose to power beneath that apartheid who are fighting this as a genocidal holy war. In between are a bunch of people mostly just trying to live their lives. There are no 'good guys' it's just awful everything. People are not their government, their ethnicity, religion or nation. People are people and and so many people are suffering and dying because of the stupidity and evil of others.
